Bills sign Percy Harvin to a one-year deal

AP

Percy Harvin has figured out a way to keep from allowing long contracts with teams to prematurely end.

He signed a one-year deal.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the mercurial wideout has agreed to a one-year deal with the Bills.

He must have made a good impression on Rex Ryan in his short time with the Jets, which followed his short time with the Seahawks.

He adds another dynamic element to an offense that seems to have everything but a quarterback, after trading for LeSean McCoy to go with players such as Sammy Watkins.

It’s a bit of a gamble, but everything else about the Bills offseason seems to be (including signing Richie Incognito).

History shows us Harvin’s not a long-term fit anywhere, so maybe the short deal is the way to go.

  1. You suddenly start seeing the makings of a decent offense, to go with that rock solid defense of theirs.

Maybe Kyle Orton wants to unretire now??

  2. LeSean McCoy and Percy Harvin added to Bills receivers Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods. Lots of versatility & playmakers to keep defenses honest.

Bills only need to be mediocre on offense as their defense will take care of the rest.

  3. Bills are going to be ready for the Pat’s this year…in fact that entire AFC East division has gotten better, and likely the most competitive since the Pat’s had the good fortune to acquire Brady.

Pat’s, and their fans, are hearing footsteps, and I hope the Bills, Jets, and Fins trample all over NE!

  4. This might work out for one year. He obviously didn’t scare Rex off after their experience together last year. If he can have a quiet but productive season this year, they’ll probably sign him to a longer term contract next year and cut him eight months later.

  5. Can’t wait to hear the terms……Harvin will play hard, be a good teammate, be a leader on that squad, so he can get a big, new long term contract next off season…….I think this is a good signing.

  6. Great signing. Rex bringing Percy in after coaching him for half a season makes me think he can’t be that bad. And Incognito’s contract is dirt cheap with tons of incentives and he can be cut at any time. He was a pro bowl G and if you read the texts between him and martin, I think the whole thing got blown out of proportion.

  7. Rex Ryan and Percy Harvin.

    Yeah, that’ll work well.

    Not.

$10 says they get into a fight on the sidelines before the end of September.

  8. Why are Patriots fans complaining about anything? 4 championships in 15 years, Tom Brady, Belichick, what more do they need. Can’t win every year…geez.

  9. Won’t matter, they’ve been one of the biggest jokes in the league for 20 years. Only franchise not to make the playoffs this millennium. Last time the Bills were relevant, Jerry Maguire was in theaters. Plus their QB options are all less than average. Cassell? You mean the Vikings third option, and Manuel is such a bust, whoever decided he was worth a top 15 pick is foolish

  10. Pats hearing footsteps? Sorry, winning the offseason doesn’t scare us much. An AFC East team routinely makes the big splashes only to fold to New England. And we’re too busy admiring the shine of our Lombardi trophy to notice or care too much what other teams do.

  11. A one year deal isn’t a gamble, and Percy is usually okay the first year. It’s typically not until the second year that he starts throwing weights at coaches and fighting with teammates.

  12. Bills fans, don’t get too excited. Roman may not know what to do with all that talent. Now that he finally has speed, pray hard he knows how to use them.

  13. Harvin’s got a decent shot at setting the record for most teams played for when it’s all said and done.

Patriots Fans Everywhere, 6 weeks after a Super Bowl victory, PISSED OFF at the cheapness of the Krafts.

Nope not at all. Sheard was a great signing, the rest of the value pickups will be coming as the market shakes out. How can an owner be cheap if they spend to the cap limit every year. You have no idea what youre talking about and probably not a Pats fan.

It’s amazing that people can go through the same thing every year and still forget.

Theres no doubt the other teams in the divison got better. Better than the Pats? Well we’ll wait and see what happens on the field.

  15. Sign a good blocking TE like Gresham and maybe a guard/center and call it the best Bills offseason in team history.

    Thank you Pegulas!!!!!

11 win team next year easily. With that defense and running game, if Rex can win 11 with Sanchez, he can surely win 11 with Fitzpatrick.
    ______________________________________

    FYI, Isn’t Fitzpatrick a Jet?

  17. he’ll be upset that they throw to Watkins more and want Mike Vick to come throw to him. then he’ll pout when that doesnt happen. hes a bust.

  18. Everyone keeps commenting as if the Bills do not have a QB.
    Cassell is servicable.
And with a decent running game and a very solid defense, I think people might be surprised.

There is not need to be saying “they need an average QB” now.

They HAVE an average QB. Just don’t have a VERY good one.

  19. Bills are now leading the AFC East standings for best roster on paper

Rex always had Jets winning Super Bowl on paper. Problem is they don’t play on paper!

  20. Rex be like, I know he was a headcase who ruined our team last year. Let’s try it again.

Gonna be tough with Fitz in Ny to win 11 in Buffalo with him.

    Good Luck.

Matt Cassell is awesome though.(check out his 4 pick game vs the Pats last year.)

  22. The Bills keep buying speakers but they have no amp and now, no cap room.

    Wide right.

  23. The signing of Harvin stands to do a LOT more damage to the Bills locker room than the signing of Richie Incognito.

The Bills are Harvin’s fourth team in the past two years. For a guy this talented to get booted around this much, something’s wrong. Caveat Emptor.

Best roster that doesn’t have a QB on paper.

  25. It’s easy to spend money in FA when you don’t have to pay a QB. My Browns aren’t paying a QB either… actually they’re not doing much of anything this FA.

  26. @vaellis Oh sorry he was 16th. Regardless, his own coach at FSU told Buffalo he didn’t have what it takes, dude was projected as a third rounder at best and Bills gave him first round money cause their franchise is a joke.

  27. Look the front runner Pats fans the bus just stopped so get off so there will be more room for the real fans. Stop complaining we just won the damned SB for Christ sake. Yes you are the same fans who wrote them off after a tough start this year, when they were down twice by 14 to the Ravens and I am sure you were already crying in your freaking beer before Malcom Butler made on of the greatest defensive plays in the history of the super bowl. So shut up and get off.

If by bust you mean most electrifying playmaker in the nfl when healthy, then yea.

  29. The Raiders have lots of cap room. They are like the kid who goes all out for prom but can’t get a date. Right Joe!?!

  30. He’s easily the best player on your team now. But he can be a pain. Best player Vikings ever had maybe. Always worth the risk if he grows up….

  31. Welcome to Buffalo, Percy! Can’t wait for the start of a fantastic season! #billsmafia #buffalove

  32. Bills have a lot of weapons. Too bad they don’t have anyone on their roster that can get the ball to any of them.

  33. No downside whatsoever to this signing!!! I know that “winning march” is never the objective BUT, can’t deny that the Bills have a very very talented roster Rollin into 2015!!!

  34. No knocking anyone’s team trying to improve. It’s March and a long way from September so let’s not Declare anyone Champs or dead just yet.
This is a sport of attrition, anyone remember the Patriots week 4?
Those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it:)
Patriots repeat and I only say that in March because we are the only ones who can, and have as good a chance as all do the other 31!

  35. “he can surely win 11 with Fitzpatrick”

Probably could but he doesn’t play for the Bills. They have Matt “the cannon” Cassell.

    3 yards a pass, 3 yards a run = lots of 3 and outs

Best player the Vikings ever had? Are you delusional? Alan Page? Randy Moss? Fran Tarkenton? Carl Eller? Chris Doleman? Cris Carter? Randall McDanliel?

  37. The Bills better make it to the Super Bowl this year, because in about 2-3 years, they’ll have so many cap problems. This sounds like the Eagles of three years ago, the Dolphins of two years ago, and the Bucs of last year. Spending and trading so much, and didn’t do anything with the talent acquired.

  38. All these experts saying he’s a cancer in the locker room, yet I’d like for someone to mention just one incident on the Hawks or Jets that pertained to him being a nuisance or causing disruption. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

  39. @nhpats…OK. Let me clarify. Best all around football player. Runs. Catches. Throws. Returns. Heck, bet he could play CB…..

  40. Doug Whaley sure is acting like a desperate GM and we all know what happens to desperate GM’s. The 3 main needs the Bills had going in to free agency were a QB, LG and TE and he acquired none of them. Harvin is way over rated, a waste of money and a locker room Cancer.

OK, how about he was banging Russell Wilson’s wife….

  42. A one year deal makes it less likely his contract will be terminated before it is complete. But it does not eliminate the possibility of it being terminated before it is complete.

Never underestimate the knuckleheadedness of knuckleheads. Harvin is on his fourth team now. That says a lot about him as a person—accepting as a given that not one of the previous 3 teams let him go because he wasn’t talented enough to help them.

    That was Golden Tate, skippy.

Not even close homer. Bills don’t know how to win.

  47. Can’t go wrong signing this guy on a 1 year deal. He should be motivated to get his next contract, and he bring a dimension to the offense they’ve lacked.

I really like the moves the Bills, Jets and Dolphins have made.

Incognito isn’t a gamble. Hes a solid player that gets a bad rap for harassing a 300 pound grown man. Cmon.
    —-

Incognito has not been on an NFL team that did not get rid of him. He’s worn out his welcome with three teams, and the last one got ugly and public. You are downplaying what he did.

I do think, however, that Richie will be a model citizen for this year. He sat out a year and a half, and he isn’t getting younger, so this is important for him. If he comes to OTAs and camp in shape, he should be fine. And you know the big meathead is dying to hit someone.

  52. I’m a pats fan’ but think the bills will probably take the afc east, can’t see how the pats defense will be able to stop anyone now….Maybe if we are bad enuff, we can get a good draft pick next year

  53. Jesus lots of talent flocking to (or staying in) the AFC East… I was really excited for this year, but Miami has added some big pieces and the Jets defense is gonna be pretty legit.

People say this every offseason. And every season, when the Patriots are in for a chance to win it all again, you realize the season isn’t won in March.

But hey, keep complaining about how not keeping Revis totally wouldn’t have crippled the cap if we had tried to even get close to the Jets offer…

The Patriots could have your grandma playing defense and they’ll still win bunches of games this year. The only way they go bad is when Brady retires and Belichick walks into the sunset with him.

The loss of Revis was the only one I cared about. That one hurts.

  56. Matt Cassell will have a couple good games with the infusion of a new situation but will then implode upon his own repeated suckiness that happens wherever he goes.

Percy Harvin the “best player the Vikings ever had”??? Are you serious?

Go back and look at the Bud Grant Vikings teams of the 60’s and see what you find.
I’m a Packer fan, but dismissing the great Vikings players of the 60’s offends even me.

  61. The Bills may be in good position for the next 2-3 years. Meanwhile down in Miami that Suh contract is going to eat up a lot of their cake towards making moves in 2016 and 2017.

  62. Surprised the Jets let Harvin go. Seems they would have had an excellent receiving tandem with Harvin and Marshall.

  63. Who hasn’t seen that advertisement – Speed Kills!
I don’t know anyone quicker in the NFL…that SB runback where in the midst of a heavy crowd of defenders no one got a finger on Percy was classic!
