Report: Raiders meeting with Christian Ponder

AP

The Raiders are reportedly meeting with a former starting quarterback.

Minnesota’s Christian Ponder is huddling with Oakland on Friday, Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports reports.

The Vikings’ top pick in 2011, the 27-year-old Ponder started 36 games in four seasons with Minnesota. He is PFT’s 106th-ranked free agent.

If the Raiders were to add Ponder, it would cast more doubt on Matt Schaub’s future in Oakland. The Texans’ former starter, Schaub is set to make $5.5 million in salary in 2015, per NFLPA records.

Ponder (6-2, 229) has connected on 632-of-1,057 passes for 6,658 yards in regular season play, committing 46 turnovers, throwing 38 touchdowns and rushing for seven TDs.

UPDATE 4:59 p.m. ET: Ponder is likely to sign a one-year contract with Oakland, Adam Caplan of ESPN reports.

  1. Makes Sense. Musgrave is their OC. CP knows the system and Musgrave actually may Like CP. His Personality would gel well with Del Rio as well… Del Rio Former Vike…

  2. I am definitely not the biggest fan of Christian Ponder.

    That being said…

He looks like Joe Montana compared to Matt Schaub. I wish him the best. Definitely an upgrade in Oakland.

  3. By all accounts, Schaub has been a good teammate and mentor to Carr, but he was an absolute mess the few times he saw the field last season. He’s certainly not worth 5.5M.

  4. Good enough for a backup role. But man– he must be terrible if he can barely get a sniff in this supremely weak QB market.

  5. I’m surprised the Packers aren’t making a big push for Ponder. He had his best game against them and he would be better than any of the backup quarterbacks they’ve trotted out the last two years. I guess he has too much character for them.

  6. Get used to bubble screens, Raiders…….or would you be signing him for running out and retrieving the tee after a kickoff?

  7. the difference between free agent quarterbacks and a box of chocolates is you do know what you’re gonna get

  8. Oakland would be better off with Flynn than Ponder. And I’m glad Green Bay already has Tolzien wrapped up. He’d be starting if he were in Minnesota, just by hand size alone.

  9. I hope they take him so I can feel a little better knowing that we get some payback for losing SBXI!!!!
Reverse the curse. Let Ponder Wander!!!!

  10. In 2014 Schaub was 5/10 for 57 yards, No touchdowns, 2 ints and 3 fumbles while being paid around $8 million I believe. I feel bad for Schaub and the horrendous luck hes had since 2013 but the Raiders have got to move on to somebody much cheaper and more productive.

  11. My only comment is that he’s clearly better and less expensive than Schaub as our back-up QB. I’m sure the haters will have a field day with this, but, as a back-up QB, I’m good with it.

  12. LoL @ all of you saying Ponder would be an improvement over Schaub. Obviously, incredibly, painfully obviously, you haven’t seen a lot of Christian Ponder playing.

    GL.

  13. Don’t waste the money or the reps on this dude or with Schaub…Carr and Mcgloin will be fine. McGloin is 3 times better than Ponder

  14. I hope this works out for Ponder. I can’t imagine any team paying Schaub $5.5 million to back up Derek Carr.

Ponder needs a fresh start, and I hope he gets it here. He’s a class guy who made the best of a bad situation in Minnesota. If Spielman had waited until round three to pick him, then they wouldn’t have had so much trouble putting him on the bench when his play didn’t live up the unreasonable expectations put on him. He could have a good (and perhaps long) career as a backup QB. Good luck, Christian.

  15. Backup qb is pretty much his ceiling, Vikings screwed up taking him way too high and he was never going to become a franchise quarterback. I kinda feel bad for him, as much as i couldn’t stand his play, he always seemed like he had a good attitude and gave it a hundred percent.

  16. Makes sense… definitely who you think of when you think of the traditional stereotypical Raider QB – nasty, imposing attitude, larger-than-life personality, big-time arm… oh wait, they’re looking at Christian Ponder? Never mind.

  17. Stephen A Smith called it a racist move….they should have re-signed JaMarcus instead.

Why? Has the third string TE refused to take snaps under center?

A Chiefs fan talking QB smack is almost cute.

  19. It would have been hilarious if the Raiders had also signed Harvin, but alas, we’ll simply have to be happy watching Ponder throwing passes into the Bay.

  20. Are You Serious? Tolzien has two years in McCarthy System and he Balled in 2014 Pre Season…LOL NFL teams just dont pick up a guy because he played in their division…. even getting a sniff for a Backup Job is a 1 in a million chance for a player… Ask Josh Freeman if he has a job as a backup

:I’m surprised the Packers aren’t making a big push for Ponder. He had his best game against them and he would be better than any of the backup quarterbacks they’ve trotted out the last two years. I guess he has too much character for them.

Flynn has been passed around the league more that a whiskey flask at a Packers game.

  22. The thing with Ponder is he lacks intangibles. And that’s why what’s really wrong with him doesn’t show up in the stats; which are a type of tangible. Ponder is a momentum killer. He’s the guy when he does make mistakes, they are made at the worst possible time. After a turnover in his teams favor, that’s when he’ll turn the ball over again. Or when in field goal range he’ll throw a pick-6 so it’s not just a 7 point swing, it’s a 10 point swing. He’ll take the sack on 2nd and inches knocking him back 20 yards. He’ll miss the open receiver on 3rd down; not always on 1st or 2nd. That’s Ponder and that’s what stats don’t capture.

    _______

I think I see why the Packers went through six backup quarterbacks in 2013. You need to expand your criteria for evaluating quarterbacks.

    ______

No. I’m trying to entertain the PFT community by playfully tweaking the Packers. I always thought that was perfectly understood.

  25. Hahahaha!!!!!! Oh wait they are serious about signing him. I thought this was comedy hour at PFT. Right Joe!?!

  26. Agreed SnowLock, But even More Glaring is the Fact that Ponder is not a natural thrower. he is too mechanical with his motion and his Feel as a thrower is poor at times…. not being a leader does not matter if you are in accurate.

At least he never choked an NFCC game away!

Yup, he will always have that….he just chokes during the reg season

  29. Well Chris, if you thought the Vikings were bad… well, at least the weather will be nicer in Oakland for you…

  30. christian ponder in 2 years starting for the los angeles raiders on thursday night football due to an injury to derek carr, weird.

Umm, to be fair now, since he played for that dumpster fire in Minnesota he never had a chance to go to the NFC Championship game.

    You got that, right?

  32. Glad to see that Ponder was able to complete his playing time in Minnesota without blemishing their perfect 0 for 27 in chances to win a championship.

Speaking of hand size, if little Erin Rogers had bigger hands in 2009 would he have fumbled away the playoff game?

If nothing else, we could have picked his brain to learn more about the Vikes’ off….

  35. I remember when Trent folder said he had an “it” factor coming out of FL St…. Well “it” is good riddance.

  36. Ponder is a great person. I hope he gets it together,
He got thrown into a mess in Minnesota with no structure at the top.
He has all the physical tools, if he gets over the mental hump. He has the IQ, and is one of the quickest players on the team. If he quits relying on
his legs, USE YOUR HEAD AND ARM.
    Good luck Christian…..

  37. It will be interesting to see if he prospers after getting out of that qb wasteland Minnesota.

  38. Question for the Raiders fans??? As you see Viking fans and trolls are arguing with Packers trolls and fans on a thread about your team?

Do you guys have to deal with this all the time too, when you read about your team/players/former players ??

  39. Another first round bust for Spieladope no wonder that team has a losing record every year.

    …………………………………………………………………………………………..

Of course not- never had the slightest chance of playing in one. Of course, that`s nothing new to the Vikings.

  41. Hey Christian, you beat little Erin Rogers, haven’t choked 5 playoff games away, u beat Seattle and san Francisco, why the tough love? Little Erin hasn’t accomplished that in ten years!

He played for MN, never had the chance. And Mr. Aaron Rodgers owns a Super Bowl ring. How many does any Viking that wasn’t a Packer own??

  43. This makes no sense at all.

    1) Carr and McGloin are far better QB’s and cannot be beat out by Ponder.

    2) Ponder is not practice squad eligible. Why sign a veteran minimum guy for 3rd string?

    3) Carr and McGloin are developing and need the reps wasted on a 3rd string nobody.

    4) The Raiders should have only Carr and McGloin on the active roster and have a rookie on the practice squad to activate in an emergency.

If you only knew. We have our share of Chargers and Chiefs trolls.

    Jealousy is my only guess.
