Saints trade Kenny Stills to Miami for Dannell Ellerbe and a third

AP

The Saints are apparently willing to trade everyone.

But in the strangest turn, they’re sending one of the young and cheap ones in exchange for a guy many thought was already cut.

A league source tells PFT that the Saints are dealing wide receiver Kenny Stills to the Dolphins, in exchange for linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and a third-round pick.

Ellerbe was reported to be cut by the Dolphins, but they never turned in the paperwork, so they could do such a deal.

The Saints have traded or cut high-earners, but Stills is interesting because he’s still working on a rookie deal which pays him just $585,000 this year and $675,000 next year.

Stills won’t turn 23 until next month, and gives the Dolphins a legitimate deep threat for their offense (16.5 yards per catch).

Ellerbe, on the other hand is 29 and expensive. He’s due $8.425 million, $6.45 million, and $6 million the next three seasons. It’s probably safe to assume there’s a restructuring in his future.

  1. Alright that is how to deal FINALLY!!! Don’t like losing a draft pick but it’s only a 3!!! STILL need a RB knowshow is NOT gonna cut it!!!

  2. “Stills won’t turn 23 until next month, and gives the Dolphins a legitimate deep threat for their offense.”

    What’s Mike Wallace, a possession receiver?

  3. The AFC East is losing their mind trying to unseat the World Champion Patriots! I LOVE IT!

    Won’t be enough, sorry 🙂

    =========================================

    Any team can “win” in March and April. The legit teams actually win in December and January. Something Miami has not done for 15 years……

  5. So Brees’ now has Cooks, Colston, Toon, and Seantavius Jones to throw the ball to……Someone should have told the Saints that this strategy only works if you have Tom Brady as your QB.

  6. So the real story here is that Chip Kelley is taking a break, and all the questionable, head-scratcher roster changes have moved from Philadelphia to New Orleans.

  7. Saints have 9 or 10 draft picks

    they will be trading them

    Amari Cooper or Kevin WHite is coming to Saints

  8. Sure, these moves may not pan out for Miami. But if you are a fan of any team in the AFC East aside from Miami, don’t tell me you aren’t the least bit concerned.

    *********************************************
    this made me laugh out loud….

  10. Huge salary dump for the Dolphins and it looks like the Bills got played by Clay who will probably stay with the Dolphins. It’s a crappy draft for TE’s and OG’s so way to go Doug Whaley.

  11. THREE TEAMS: BILLS, JETS, DOLPHINS are spending themselves into a SALARY CAP HELL,,all 3 believe big names= Big WINS….thats not the case,,ALL 3 of these teams have major QB issues…the dolphins are already 20/30 million over next yr cap,,once suh’s contract kicks in….the BILLS are stoking checks to anybody who will play footsie with the heel Rex. While Mevis got a good deal,,you do have to have some form of offense and the jets DO NOT….

  12. Wow the dolphins might be legitimate as well as the bills. Actually exciting for this pats fan!

  13. Brees didn’t like Stills or Grubbs.

    Both are gone.

    I wouldn’t get too excited yet on the demise of the Saints as long as 9 and Payton are there they’ll be fine offensively. It was the D that was a huge problem last year.

  14. Miami will be 7-9 next year.
    Great move by the Saints. 2 players for 1. Ill take it.

  15. I don’t get this in any way shape or form from the Saint’s perspective.

    What value have they gotten here? A 3rd and a scrap heap MLB for a young productive WR that’s out produced the 31 y/o WR with a $5 million cap hit for the last 2 years? I realize the dead money factor but….this is nonsense.

  16. Wait, you’re fighting proverbial salary cap hell, so you trade the young, cheap guy for an old really expensive guy who was probably going to be cut anyways? Yeah, you get a 3rd, but KENNY STILLS WAS DIRT-CHEAP.

  17. Sign best defensive free agent, check. Trade for and sign a bunch of players that the fan base will expect way too much out of, check. All they need to do is sign a first round bust QB and it will be like the Eagles “Dream Team”

  18. Saints get a serviceable LB and a 3rd round pick for a 5th round locker room problem. Word in NOLA is that Brees wasn’t happy with him or Grubbs. Hence why they both got traded.

  19. You have to be able to pay for that 29 million dollar 2016 cap hit for Suh! Right Miami? That’s what this is about. Stills is cheap and he fills a need but this is more about dumping money to pay for Suhs future numbers in Miami. Hahaha love it!

  20. I can only think this was more personal than anything else, possibly a locker room cancer, otherwise it makes very little sense…maybe the truth will come out after it’s finalized.

  21. So the Saints wanted to get “better on defense” so they cut Curtis Lofton who was 5th in the league in tackles based on salary cap reasons and proceed to trade for an older, more expensive, and less talented LB? Makes PERFECT sense.

  22. So, are the Saints trying to do a turbo rebuilding phase while Brees still has some fuel left in the rotator cuff?

  23. Looks like the Patriots are in for trouble this season.. No Revis / Browner and to have these deep threats in other teams within the division. Going to be 2011 all over again!!

    The Fins are actually 30 below for next year even with Suh’s contract. But nice try

  26. LOL…this is good because Tannehill is so great at throwing the ball downfield?? Ask Mike Wallace or Hartline about that. Unless they are looking at trading up for a QB….this has zero value.

  27. A good LB and a third round pick for an inconsistent, locker-room cancer is highway robbery by Loomis. Saints win this trade, hands down.

  28. Looks likes the Saints got the better deal. They needed a starting LB then get a 3rd round pick in a draft that’s already deep with WRs. Stills was a 5th rounder and they already have a similar player in Cooks.

  29. Apparently, Saints fans don’t realize their defense allowed the 2nd most yards last season and their QB is 36 years old, not to mention finishing 7-9 in the worst division in football. One would think it may be time to retool.

  30. Hey Drew. See what the front office is doing to you since you wont help by restructuring? Your no Brady. He makes everyone work in the offense. I expect a blockbuster deal for you next.

  31. its not a bad trade if they get a quality WR with that 3rd rounder or if Amari Cooper falls to them in the 1st round unlikely but rashard greene or justin hardy in the 3rd round would be a solid pick. people over react too much…at least ellerbe contract gets cheaper so it’ll help save cap space next year.

  32. I wonder if the real trade was Stills for the 3rd. They may end up releasing Ellerbe if they can find younger cheaper. Bu why did they not like Stills?

  33. We are already out of “salary cap hell”. Ellerbe will restructure and Saints will get a WR in the first round to replace Stills who was hit or miss last year. Defense is getting stronger and the offense still has better weapons than most of the league. Good pickup for the Dolphins as they look to get out of the Wallace contract and replace Hartline. Good trade for both teams

  34. The only reason the Saints would deal Stills is because he was a locker room cancer. There were so many things wrong with the Saints last year that you couldn’t quite put your finger on. It’s all coming to light now. The reason Graham and Stills are gone is because they had to go. Hopefully he grows up, Dolphins fans, but the Saints are making moves that make perfect sense if you look at what they are actually doing.

  35. Schmitty2 – Lofton also missed more tackles than any other MLB/ILB in all of football last season. Plus, he’s terrible in coverage.

    What’s Mike Wallace, a possession receiver?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The way I’m reading these moves, I’d say Mike Wallace is “next” unless he restructures. He can’t possibly get what he is currently making and cutting him (after June-1) would net a decent cap return. His there is also offset language so they would technically get some back as well.
  38. Got a 3rd round pick for a locker room cancer. Way to go Saints. Keep piling up those draft picks in a draft that’s loaded with Wide Receivers!!
  39. We’ll see what happens, but on the surface this certainly appears to be a great trade for Miami. The type of trade they never make, which makes it kinda shocking.
    I’m probably in the minority on this, but I would dump Wallace and sign Harvin. Harvin, Landry and Still would give Miami three scary weapons to go with Cameron, Clay, Miller and whatever other running back they bring in.
    Umm, have you seen Ellerbe play?
  41. “Stills won’t turn 23 until next month, and gives the Dolphins a legitimate deep threat for their offense (16.5 yards per catch).”??
    That’s sounds great…if your QB can get him the ball. Tannehill has big problems passing downfield. Terrible YPA and one of the worst QBRs on throws over 10 yards. So…how does Stills make Tannehill so great when Wallace couldn’t?
  42. So the Saints, who can’t shed expensive contracts fast enough, traded away a promising young receiver for a grossly overpaid linebacker?
    Nice job getting a 3rd, but what is Loomis thinking?
  43. Love Love Love this move for the Saints. Stills was a 5th round draft pick and is basically a much less talented Brandon Cooks. Saints get another draft pick and a very good Linebacker. D is getting measurably better and the O won’t miss a beat.
  44. Disagree that the Dolphins should dump Wallace. Why?
    If he’s willing to redo his deal – which he said he’s open to – then do it. Keep him and Stills with Landry and now Cameron and hopefully keep Clay. That’s a pretty good receiving/TE corps right there that can stretch the field and do a lot of damage underneath as well. (As long as Cameron stays healthy) This will do wonders for the run game as well.
    Now lets go to work on some OL and hope T-Hill works on throwing the long ball and fill in the holes on defense. Lets hold off on the AFC East championships for now and prove it on the field though.
    Good start though without a doubt.
  45. This guy had Drew Brees throwing to him. Now he’s going to duplicate that with Tannehill – just 5 yards at a time though
  46. Longest pass last year was 50 yards….good for a ranking of 43rd.
    Ranked 28th in yards per pass.
    How does Stills…who is mostly a downfield threat due to his speed and separation ability…have any success in Miami?
    QBs makes WRs better….WRs don’t make QBs better.
  47. So Tannehill struggles with throwing the 9 route, and their two primary WRs are guys who specialize in those routes? Ok….
    Chip is trading Mathis for Jordan and Stills…..
    ——–
    Nah. Wallace and Jordan (maybe + a late pick) for Mathis and Alonzo. Both teams get what they need and are instantly better. Jordan fits scheme better than Kiko and Wallace opens up that offense (already knows much of it) and Miami gets a decent guard and the MLB they need.
  49. Great move by the Saints…again. I would have taken just the 3rd rd pick for the party boy. If you live in New Orleans, you know or have probably seen him out in the Quarter at all hours partying. Wait until he hits South Beach. If he wasn’t a lockerroom cancer and party animal do you really think a cap-challenged team would get rid of a player still under his rookie deal? Ellerbe will be restructured or cut so he was basically a throw-in that could pan out nicely. So keep hating on Loomis as he rebuilds a winner. It’s all good.
  50. Kenny stills, who at best was inconsistent with drew brees, is somehow worth a 3rd? And a 3rd isn’t some throwaway pick either, especially a higher 3rd
  51. I actually love this trade for the Saints, and am really looking forward to the new look in 2015.
    Sincerely,
    Falcons fans everywhere
  52. I think this is a win/win for both sides:
    1. Saints improved their defense and got a good linebacker and a 3rd round pick.
    2. Dolphins got faster and younger on offense giving Tannehill an additional weapon.
  53. Saints will be fine.
    The draft is stacked with WR talent and if they are blowing it up then the extra picks won’t hurt at all.
    Miami, Buffalo and the Jets are certainly winning the free agency war. Who knows whether it will translate into finally toppling the Patriots? Maybe this year is the year it happens.
  54. “Brees didn’t like Stills or Grubbs.
    Both are gone.
    I wouldn’t get too excited yet on the demise of the Saints as long as 9 and Payton are there they’ll be fine offensively. It was the D that was a huge problem last year”
    And I’m sorry to tell you, if you’ve watched him in Miami, Ellerbe will not help, so Brees may have to trade him – oh wait, no one will pay him what he’s due – I mean cut him.
  55. bubbybrisket says: Mar 13, 2015 1:04 PM
    I don’t like this trade at all. Why are you trading Kenny Stills????
    ===========================
    Stills was a head case in college that’s why he dropped all the way to the 5th round… He evidently became a head case with the Saints in the locker room so the Saints now have a 3rd rounder for a 5th round player… That’s how you wheel and deal!!!!!
    In Loomis We Trust… Ok, jealous ones!
  56. Such a stark difference from Ireland to Hickey. Hickey is doing work over there and bringing in the right talent. Stills will thrive in this offense and he is super cheap for the next two years.
    Remember when people were trolling the dolphins for losing out on ray farmer to the browns and had to “settle” for Dennis Hickey….. Thank you Cleveland.
  57. Brees’ contract is NOT the issue… Brees didn’t like Stills (headcase) and now he gets to throw some of his 5,000 yards to someone else lol
  58. 2015 AFC East Standings
    1. Miami
    2. Buffalo (Wild Card)
    3. NY Jets (8 wins)
  59. I like Stills but don’t know about a 3rd round pick. I think it is worth it but don’t think it is some brilliant move that some seem to think it is, unless by trading Ellerbe as opposed to cutting him they take less of a cap hit.
  60. Stills is a nice deep threat. Remains to be seen if Tannehill can complete the long ball, his YPA last year was 6.86, 28th among QB’s.
  61. FACT OF THE DAY:
    If any fan of any team does not think this was a super deal for the Dolphins you are plain nuts. They dumped a hortible LB they designsted for June 1 Cuts, saved $8M and got a young super WR at minimum. Yes, they gave up a 3rd, but I can guarantee not every top 3 round WRs every turns out successful. This is a lock. No need to put down the Saints. This to me is about the Dolphins. Loading talent and working the Cap. Suh cost a lot, but we ALL know he is worth it. The Fins have been masterful at the contracts game If Clay stays or we get a WR at #14 we will be more than fine ; even with our so called horrible 11th ranked QB. Also, thanks to all the non- Dolphins fans pointing out we are the Free Agency Champions… We never said it, but thanks for bringing it to our attention. I am sure the Bills, Jets, Rams, Jags and Eagles thank you as well. Jeez, 100’s of the same comment types year after year. The team getting loves it, the teM losing the guy comes up with: he sucked, he is injury prone, overpaid, etc.
  62. Stills is a dime a dozen lol, NO got him in the 5th round. Tossed him a few deep balls in 2 years made him into a 3rd rounder and got a MLB to go along with the 3rd. This draft is stacks with K. Stills. I applaud NO what moves to solidify your team.
    There is a lot more behind the scenes then most realize. Maybe stills was a head case and needed to be moved. I would be surprised to see more to come. Big year for Cooks going forward. Draft is stacked it9 picks in high rounds. Keep it going Loomis great job.
    1. Miami still has an incompetent Coach in Joe Philbin. He’s been 7-9, 8-8 & 8-8 in his first three seasons in Miami. Talent has never been an issue with this team, it’s the way they’ve mismanaged guys like Dion Jordan.
    2. Tannehill has one of the best deep threats in the game in Wallace and he’s never shown he can hit the long pass. Do you think all of a sudden he’s going to start hitting Kenny Still?
    3. NE still has Tom Brady. I hate NE with a passion but Brady is still the best QB in the AFC
The luster must be off those 2 Lombardi’s from the 70’s by now, no?
  78. As an Eagles fan, I think this is a big mistake for the Saints, giving up very young talent for a player who you didn’t even need to trade for. I was real hopeful that Chip could pull off a trade to bring in Stills to fill the deep-threat WR void and the Saints were interested in Evan Mathis.   81. I say keep Wallace at this point, only if they can get Clay back. Fins would have two speedsters on the outside, a solid slot with Landry and a tandem of pro bowl caliber TE. Anyone who thinks Tannehill was the problem is kidding themselves. Making some solid moves here, just please keep Charles Clay.
  82. 1. People commenting about Drew Brees’ age?
    Tom Brady is older and he just won a Superbowl.
    2. People commenting about Drew Brees salary?
    They don’t want him to restructure in case they would rather release him two years later and not get stuck with that dead money, better to do what you can with a Future HOFer now because when he’s gone the Saints will be replacing him like the dolphins are still trying to replace Marino.
