Stevie Johnson to visit Pats on Monday

AP

The Patriots have lost cornerback Darrelle Revis to the Jets.  So it makes sense that the Patriots would be interested in a receiver who traditionally has had good luck against Revis.

PFT has confirmed multiple reports that Johnson will visit the Patriots on Monday.

Johnson was cut by the 49ers on Thursday, and he visited the Chargers on Friday.

Per a league source, the Jets also have interest in Johnson, which makes sense given that his former coach in Buffalo is now the offensive coordinator of the Jets.

The visit was first reported by Diana Marie Russini of NBC 4 in Washington, and confirmed by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.  Rapoport’s failure to credit Russini for having it first prompted her to remark “really dude?” on Twitter, which in turn prompted Rapoport to suggest arm wrestling to resolve the grievance.

Which leads to two observations.  First, I’m glad there’s a media squabble on Twitter involving someone other than me.  Second, I’ve got $100 on Russini.

  1. Players never leave the AFC East. Once they cross into the division, they just swap uniforms. It’s like the Bermuda Triangle of NFL free agency.

  2. In December, the Jets owner made it clear that he would like Darrelle Revis to return to New York. Per the league’s Anti-Tampering rules, franchises aren’t allowed to comment on signing players on other teams, which makes it a pretty straight forward violation.

  3. Funny how who quotes a source first, seems to be so important……It has caused some bad reporting or at least a jumping the gun atmosphere so that we really wait to hear a confirmation or third report before we believe it…..

  4. If he can’t make it with who 49ers fans thought was the next Brady in Colin “one read” Kaepernick how will he make it with Brady?

Just kidding, he’d probably make the pro bowl since he’s no longer with squidward.

  5. “not sure an unconventional route runner would work in their system. like chad johnson didn’t.”

Lol Chad Johnson didn’t run routes. He couldn’t learn the playbook. Most of the time he ran to the wrong place.

  6. Meanwhile I exiwct the league to Dock the pats a first round pick for the Jets tampering with them. It’s how they roll up there in The league office.

  7. Revis, Akeem Ayers, Jonathan Casillas and Brandon Browner all cashed in this year after rehabbing their careers in New England.

Or, you could go all in with your entire NFL career betting on Geno Smith, the receivers undertaker.
    .

  8. Hahaha, punk, LOSER raider fans complaining about cheating. That’s the only way they ever won anything to begin with. Their team is so bad, they have all the cap space in the world and are willing to spend it and still, NOBODY willingly wants to play there.

  9. 6ball – Revis didn’t need to rehab his career last year. That’s why New England signed a 2 year contract with his for over $30 million. You don’t pay a guy that kind of money for “rehabbing” his career.

You Patriots fans sure are arrogant.

  10. So when Bellichek gushes about Ed Reed to the media, on “a football life”, and on the field to Reed himself, hes not sending out a message to Mr. Reed? Gee Ed your the greatest free safety ever but hey, I don’t want you here? Please.

  11. Stevie was a trooper for the Bills when times were tuff. I wish him luck but prefer not to have to play against him twice. Go to the saints with spiller and Byrd. Stay out of the AFC east.

  12. Whitetrash69 with a name like that why should anyone even take you seriously. Haters gonna hate and the Patriots love it more and more. They know they’re the evil empire now in all of sports and why because of their unparalleled success which no other team has come close to replicating in the FA/Salary Cap era.

Scary thing is that there not done and have maybe a two to three year window left with Bill and Brady at the helm.

  13. Johnson had 8 slant catches for 85 and a TD in one game. Caught a 40 harder in a Jet route in another on a perfect throw in garbage time. Ryan Fitzpatrick was the QB. In 2012 Johnson did nothing on him opening day.

  14. To all the sorry whiners who cannot help themselves and continue to cry about cheating: don’t you know jealousy is not a good trait?

    Time to grow up.

  15. dac458, you are correct, people continue to hate the Patriots because they’re cheaters. Nobody is envious of their “success” because its not real, they cheated and everyone knows it. Keep coming up with fairy tales to help you sleep at night, the fact is they cheated and were caught.

  16. To everyone who is crying about about the jets “tampeing” with revis note that almost every team in the league didn’t follow the rules during the three day period so what’s the difference? Not to mention patriots fans have no room to talk…first spygate and now I’m waiting to see how many picks they’ll lose for deflating their way into the SB lol

  17. Hey tyleantham93. Woody Johnson tampered at the end of last season on TV during the regular season not with Free agents before free agency. Revis was under contract. You know what’s deflating losing your pick for tampering.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Don’t hold your breath waiting for penalties on “Deflate-Gate”. You just might die. NFL has no case and they know. Just trying to find a way to exit gracefully.

  19. Why would he want revenge on the Bills skoobasaurusFL? The Bills traded him to his hometown. To a team that many people thought could be playing in the Super Bowl. He has no reason to want revenge against the Bills. #dumb

  20. Personally, I hope bitter fans continue to focus on “Patriots-are-cheaters” theme, because as long as they do that, they will never hold their own inadequate teams to task for their mediocre performances these last 15 years.

Most of the current Patriots were in high school for the one and only confirmed transgression by the team back in 2007. They find their way to deep in the playoffs year after year because they work harder and are coached better than your has-been teams.

  21. I’m waiting to see how many picks they’ll lose for deflating their way into the SB

I’m waiting to see the Pats receive their Super Bowl Champions rings.

  23. World Champs! It must really bother you losers every year losing and then you put all your pathetic cheating comments on here day in and day out. You type of people have excuses for everthing in life. Man it must of killed you watching butlers pick at the end of the game. So here are we are. Pats win another Superbowl and cry babies go oh they cheated. They cheated again. Guy made a ridiculous play. Brady was great once again. Belicheck makes a great coaching decision at the end of game. Superbowl Champs Again.

  24. If patriots had something other than a game manager at qb the wrs would be better. But if you can win with a game manager, granted he knows the defenses plays and plays with balls that are not regulation psi, then why change it?

  25. The best part you losers talk asterisk next the pats superbowls. But guess what there are none next them in the record books. They are all legit and will be forever. Only sore losers and haters on blogs cry asterisks. But that does not mean anything at all. Which just makes all of us patriot fans laugh in your faces! Ha ha

  26. Oh by the way drunkraider fan. Keep drinking your team will never be good. Nobody wants to be a raider. So you can spend your money on your Nfl package and your raider gear but they will suck year in and year out. We are the champs once again. The best and I know it kills you watching us always win. Ha ha

  27. I can honestly say the “Patriots are cheaters” label will end the very same day when people stop saying “Cap Cheating Broncos”

    So basically . . , never

Who do you think the Patriots will crush in week 1 of the 2015 season? I predict it will be the overrated Steelers with their weak defense.

  31. I can’t believe Pats fans are crying over the Jets “tampering” with Revis. Oh wait– yes I can believe it. In fact I expect it.

Woody Johnson says some nice thing about one of his former employees– huge drama in Cheatland, Mass.

Their own team gets caught repeatedly doing all sorts of actual cheating– crickets in Cheatland, Mass.

  32. Theismann Namath Boomer Favre and many other
elite players who know a lot more about football than
the knucklehead haters posting here said Brady is the greatest of all time. Without him the Pats didn’t make the playoffs.
He dragged a team with the 31st ranked defense to the Super Bowl.
He WON a Super Bowl with no running game and no deep threat.
That according to NFL logic, is supposed to be impossible. Haters can stuff it.

Me!!! I was laughing because everyone except Pats fans know that the Seahawks beat themselves!!!

  34. It wasn’t luck. Stevie Johnson destroyed Darrelle Revis because Revis is objectively the most overrated DB to ever play the position. He has gotten absolutely incinerated by the likes of Johnson, Randy Moss, Ted Ginn Jr. (multiple times!), Larry Fitzgerald, Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin, Dwayne Bowe, Mike Wallace, and countless others. Note how the Patriots pass defense was a steaming pile of bitter disappointment until Brandon Browner came to the rescue after his suspension and working back to a suitable fitness level.

Actually, the Pats did rehab his career. They got him for $4 mill less than the Bucs pd him before the cut him & none of the other 30 teams thot he was worth more than the $12 mil tha Pats offered. To his credit, he performed & cashed in big.

  39. I love how the fans of the 31 losers in the NFL who are not the World Champions actually have the gall and the audacity to think their puny insignificant team actually belongs on the same field as the 4 time Super Bowl Champion, reigning World Champion and NFL’s greatest dynasty Patriots.

It’s like a little chihuahua thinking that they belong in a fight against a Rottweiler! Oh sure the chihuahua will yip and yap a bit but in the end their opinion doesn’t really matter all that much. 🙂

  40. I wouldn’t say he use to eat up Revis. Many Bills fans use to say that, but it’s a stretch. Johnson did relatively well against him compared to other receivers.

    1st game 2010: 3 cathes 31 yrds, TD
    2nd game 2010: 5 catches 72 yrds.
    2011 1st game: 3 catches 84 yrds.
    2011 2nd game: 8 catches 75 yrds, TD

Note: Bills lost all 4 of those games against the Jets. However, Stevie is a nice route runner who is hard to cover, not fast, just makes some nice moves to get open, if he has anything left he could be a solid player for the Patriots. I still don’t consider him a number one WR in the NFL when he played for my Bills.

  41. You can argue that this kat is the BEST route runner in this league that you hardly hear about.Which is too bad
This kat would be perfect for a team who has a QB who likes to hold the ball and extends play say like a Ben Roethlisberger/ Aaron Rodgers.

His unique gift of leaving his man out in no mans land like a backdoor cut in basketball is something special.

  42. Interesting. Florio, you guys allow posts that are racist or otherwise offensive but you just censored a succinct legal analysis of why the Jets did in fact tamper with Revis and why, in the kangaroo court that is the NFL offices in NY, the Jets likely won’t come down hard on the Jets for doing so.

    That’s very revealing.

  43. The fact is Pats fans that no matter what….20 years from now your team will never be remembered as a dynasty… whether they earned it or not after the fact, they will be remembered as cheaters.. it’s never going to go away….ever. You can call people haters all you want… it’s not gonna change this teams legacy.. and it doesn’t matter whether they did it or not or how many theories everyone has… the damage is done! So thumbs down me all you want Pats fans..but it’s the truth and you all know it…

Washrig, what we know is that the Patriot’s record in the cap era is unparalleled and that is a fact not the opinion of individuals who can’t explain how the Patriots are that much better than whatever team they root for. And I’ll tell you what else we know and that is that we really enjoy watching and listening to the asemblage of low IQ idiots like yourself with their continuous weeping and moaning. So keep it up while the Patriots continue to give you more to feel inferior about.

  46. Like I say everytime to the nfl haters. What you say about cheaters and asterisks does not mran anything because every superbowl from the pats counts and has no asterisk next to it. They are on the lombardi trophy with no taint. I love how losers come in blogs and throw out cheater comments that mean nothing to the history of the game. Your words mean Nothing!!!!!!!!!. 47. Calling the Patriots cheaters isn’t an excuse or an opinion, it is a factual statement. It’s funny seeing how butt hurt Patriots fans are. If your team didn’t cheat for the last 15 years nobody would call them cheaters, accept it.

  48. Are the World Champion Patriots the greatest sports franchise of this generation?

I think in most ways that matter they certainly are. 🙂

chipwood, whitetrash, et. al — No one is coming to take the Pats Lombardi trophies away, no matter how hard you wish it would happen. Wanna know why? Because their accomplishments are not decided by people like you–yahoos who say whatever nonsense comes to mind. Those battles were fought and won legitimately on a football field. Sorry to let you in on this fact. Chronic losing, I guess, can make you bitter and irrational.

If/when your teams win one, I’ll be secure enough in my own experiences to tip my cap to them.

  52. ikeclanton,
You know what they say about assumptions don’t you? My team has more championships than the four your team earned by cheating. You can choose to live in a bubble and pretend the Patriots legacy isn’t tainted but its not the general consensus among fans. I don’t care if the Patriots trophies are taken from them or not, I can live with the fact that public perception is they are fraudulent. Honestly, you can high five other Patriots fans but don’t expect any respect from the 31 other team’s fans.

I can’t wait till you clowns come to Foxboro this year to face the World Champions. Maybe this time the World Champions will be trying and put up 90 instead of a puny 55 on that sorry defense. And Ben can go pose for the cameras with another “injury”… LMAO

I think that about covers it. 🙂

  56. Using a substance in the 1970s that was legal in America and the NFL until 1987 is cheating? Lol keep trying…

    —–
I realize that is the popular opinion with Steeler apologists. Unfortunately for them that is a disingenuous half truth.

Yes steroids were legal at the time as a prescription drug with a valid medical prescription for a medical condition. What the Steelers did with them fell way outside of that, they ABUSED the drugs to benefit from their side effects of enhancing athletic ability. And abuse of prescription drugs was NEVER legal in America.

    They cheated. Plain and simple.

And I said it before…Bradshaw apologized for using steroids on a national radio show. I heard it. He said what he did was wrong. Tell me something…why would he even THINK of saying such a thing if they were legal as you say they were?

  57. Aw, how cute… You are trying so hard to make rational sense. Its common knowledge steroids were used during that era of sports. As for Bradshaw, I am not a mind reader but I recall him saying he used them to recover from injuries, not to bulk up. I guess under your logic every team in that era cheated.

    Nope. Just one. 🙂

Read Steve Courson’s book and be informed. Learn about the rampant and systemic cheating in the Steeler organization that turned them from a dog of a franchise to great with the help of illegal PEDs. False Glory indeed…

And isn’t it funny that books such as this one exist which blow the whistle on the Steelers cheating… and yet not one former Patriot employee – despite the many that have left the organization on less than good terms – none have written such a tale about my team. Not one. 🙂

  59. I’m failing to see your point. Like I said, its common knowledge professional athletes used steroids in that era and at the time it was perfectly legal and within the rules. If something occurs that is within the rules it is not cheating by definition of the term. The Patriots did have one old employee that spoke out. He even had evidence the Pats recorded the Rams practice prior to the Super Bowl, but the NFL paid him off and newspaper was forced to retract the story. It doesn’t mean he wasn’t being honest, it means he accepted hush money.
