Belichick calls Wilfork “best defensive lineman I ever coached”

AP

With today’s news that Vince Wilfork has signed with the Texans, Patriots coach Bill Belichick has offered some fond memories as he says goodbye.

Belichick, the only head coach Wilfork has played for in the NFL, referred to Wilfork as the best defensive lineman he’s coached.

“Few players reached or will ever reach the special level of Vince Wilfork,” Belichick said. “He is a great champion and one of the classiest people I have ever been around – just a kind, genuine and giving person who was all about our team, football, winning and bringing joy to others. There may have never been anyone at his position with as much strength, toughness, intelligence, instinctiveness and athleticism. He is the best defensive lineman I ever coached, an all-time great Patriot whose place on our team will be missed but whose remarkable career as a Patriot will be remembered forever.”

Belichick has coached some great defensive linemen. Former Patriots defensive lineman Richard Seymour was a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2000s. Belichick also coached six-time Pro Bowler Michael Dean Perry for four years in Cleveland. But Wilfork is the best of them all. It says something about Belichick’s approach to managing his roster that even the best defensive lineman he’s ever coached will get cut and leave for greener pastures when Belichick thinks he’s past his prime.

  1. Goat and that’s that. Tremendous player with a football IQ off the charts, a huge heart and he is g0ing to be missed big time. Nobody is going to replace that guy.

  2. I’m sure he means it, but as a side benefit, it was a shot at Seymour. Those two can’t stand each other.

  3. I remember the 2004 draft , when the Bears took fellow DT Tommy Harris , leaving Wilfork for the Pats. Harris hasn’t played an NFL game in probably six or seven years now.

  4. Past his prime for the money only. He was able to get a nice deal from the Texans, and I can’t blame him one bit. Both sides did what they needed to do. I wish he could have stayed, but understand why he is gone.

Thanks for the great years Vince, look forward to seeing you get inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame shortly after you retire!

  5. Let’s not forget the Giants lineman of the 80’s when he was defensive coordinator. Those teams had some studs.
    .

  6. Extremely gracious and appreciative statement by Bill Belichick, the same guy that put out a multi-paragraph retirement note lauding the efforts of a former Patriot reserve player who tried to come back from injury but was never able to suit up in a game. Now back to our regular “he’s a soulless monster” narrative.

  7. I think for BB ..sentiment is one thing.. but”team” is something different all together..if he only hung onto sentiment…he wouldn’t be the coach he’s become!

  8. It’s a sad day.

I’m glad for Vince that he’ll have good friends (RAC, Vrabel, O’Brien) waiting for him in Houston.

  9. All these patriots fans saying thank you thank you thank you blah blah blah…i say don’t let the door hit you…i mean of course thank you for EVERYTHING vince you were the man…but to make 52 million in your career and ditch your super loyal fan base and greatest team ever instead of making only 48 or 50 just doesn’t make sense to me….people always say “oh its for his family”…yeah like his family couldn’t survive if he only made 3 million dollars this year instead of 5…lets call it like it is he’s chasing the cash now and chose the money over all of us patriots fans…the nfl these days has almost no loyal players and its just sad that vince couldn’t be the guy to overcome the natural and inevitable greed of the business side of the NFL

  10. Belichick is hard ass with drawing the line on when to pay someone and I give him credit for it because too many teams get caught up in big contracts for one player. New England has stayed on top because of this business strategy. Getting emotionally attached to a player is bad for business. With that said, thanks for the memories Vince! You will be missed and thank you for everything you’ve done as a patriot! Wish you the best of luck in this new chapter of your life! While you may still pursue your dream of playing football, you will always be a patriot for life!

  11. Broncos haven’t won a Super Bowl since Capgate. Elway’s rings are tainted. Truth hurts.

  12. Pats simply did not see the value in signing him at this stage to the money he wanted. No hard feelings, but they know how to manage the Cap better than almost anyone.

Don’t hate the Pats for doing everything they can to give their fans a winner every year.

  13. I’m so sad. For us Pat fans, this guy is family. Even with him slowing a step, we still want him back. At least he won another SB before he left. Good luck Big Vince and thank you for all you did for us!

  14. “It says something about Belichick’s approach to managing his roster that even the best defensive lineman he’s ever coached will get cut and leave for greener pastures when Belichick thinks he’s past his prime.”

I see this pop up whenever the Pats cut an aging player, as if Bill is the only GM smart enough to know that Wilfork isn’t worth $8M (the amount on the Pats option for him this year). Why not give other teams credit for doing the same? Colts cut their beloved first-ballot HoF QB a few years ago when Luck was on the horizon, and did it again this year with Reggie Wayne. Heck, Wilfork’s new team recently released their all-time best receiver.

Of course I’m assuming that you were complimenting him as opposed to implying that the way he handles old vets is uniquely smarmy.

  15. Vince won a super bowl in his first and last season in NE.
Logan Mankind was drafted after their super bowl win 10 years and traded right before this season’s SB win.
    Ouch!
Vince has been paid well and has played well.
The Patriots will pay their guys on a 2nd and 3rd contract if you are one of the key guys. Vince obviously was one of the key guys.

weepingjebus I absolutely loved your comment…so spot on!

  17. It is so sad that Big Vince had to move on but Bill is honest and you just have to admire and respect the high standards he sets for all players.
To receive a compliment like this from the greatest coach that the game has ever seen is high praise but Big Vince is a worthy recipient. He is simply the best.
Even though he will play for Houston, he will always be a true Patriot. Good luck.

  18. I will call Belichick the greatest because….well, because Vince Lombardi was a Packer. That being said, most coaches are only as great as their HOF QB’s…..

  19. Best Nose Tackle of all time. Best person in any locker room. I wish he could have retired a Patriot, but going back to old friends Romeo Crennell, Mike Vrabel, and Anthony Pleasant is a good alternative.

  20. You can count the players that hate Belichick on Mordecai Brown’s right hand. The people outside the circle pretty much universally hate the guy, but the people inside the circle who have coached with and/or played for him love the guy. For the most part, even the guys that left New England angry are on good terms with him.

The one thing every player that played for BB has always said is that he was an absolute straight shooter and that you ALWAYS knew where you stood and what he wanted from you. That’s more than you can say for the majority of coaches in the NFL.

  21. Belichick always says “just do your job” and when it comes to an emotional release like Vince… Bill’s just doing his job… a job that nobody does as well as Bill… just look at his winning percentage.

That’s the trade-off for us fans… our favorite players get released a little too early for our liking but we also like the winning seasons, the playoffs and the Super Bowls.

Best of luck Vince… we’ll continue to follow you.

  22. I know people think the Patriots are cheap and heartless but there is an honesty to their approach that transcends the usual bs. When they cut a veteran it reminds me of Nanook Of The North when they take the elderly out to an iceberg and leave them. It isn’t that they don’t love them. It is just time.

  23. I’ve been a Pats fan for nearly 40 years. Since the days of Chuck Fairbanks. Grogan. Sam the Bam. Nellie. Hannah. Adams. Haynes. Clayborn. Brock. Francis. Stingley. Morgan.

Big Vince is my all time favorite Patriot player. Hands down. Good luck, just not when Houston plays New England this season.

  24. That he is past his prime is no problem at all. He is still among the best at what he does and a great player for any team. The problem is that he was due to be paid like he is still in his prime rather than a season or two past it.

  25. Joe Gibbs…3 SB winning QBs & RBs…6 different QBs in playoffs, 4 different QBs to conference title games…no comparison on GOAT coaches…

  26. And Wilfork says of Belicheat “I would lie, cheat &…er, um, dah, um…well, I would lie & cheat for that guy, cause he’s done it…I mean WOULD DO IT, for us guys”.

and another ex-Pat that will have nothing to offer about all that evil stuff the hooded one has done since 2000.

Good … good. Let your hatred flow. Feel the power.

  30. Brady is better than Ben but Hampton was way better than Wilfork, I’m not knocking Wilfork, Hampton was just that good. Learn the game of football before making outlandish statements like Wilfork is the greatest NT ever, he’s not even the greatest in this era, heck Ngata was better too.

  31. its tough to let a player with the highest reputation you can get on the pats go but it was time for him to go. wilfork was useless on passing downs at the end of his career, he basically could only stuff the run and that aspect of his game was not where it was in his prime to boot. in his prime he could at least collapse the pocket on passing downs, not so much anymore. hes basically a tree trunk in the middle and the other teams pass we essentially are down a man rushing the qb, and the pats already arent stellar at getting after the qb in the first place. it was time for wilfork to go, you got young studs like dominque easley ready to step in. big vince will be back with the pats, to sign a contract and retire and go into the pats hall of fame and maybe the nfl hof. pats fans will be waiting for that day with open arms.

  32. He’ll feel right at home in Patriots west. Even have the same uniform colors. Just glad he did not end up with the snitching Colts. He’ll forever be a Patriots in our hearts. Maybe when the time comes, he and Wes would have a one day contract and retire a Patriot. It just feel right that way.

  33. So Bilichick babbles three paragraphs of smoke up everyone’s behind saying Wilfork’s all that and a bag of chips, after he cuts him? What a waste of oxygen.

All he really needed to say, but didn’t, was that Wilfork was cut because the Patriots are cheapskates.

As cheap as they are though, they still manage to win. I give them that.

    seymour was better.

I agree with that statement, and that is no knock on Wilfork. Seymour could play every position on the line; and Seymour could stop the run and pressure the QB from every position on the line. Seymour probably could have been All-Pro from every position on a 4-3 or 3-4 line but he mostly played and was generally regarded as a 3-4 DE.

Wilfork was a great NT, one of the best NTs of his generation. Seymour was one of the best defensive linemen of his generation – hence an all decade player.

But to the person who said Casey Hampton was “way better than Wilfork” — just stop. Hampton was a fine player in his prime, maybe as good as Wilfork, but never way better.

  35. Another politicly correct statement by Belecheat right after he throws another one of his players under the bus.

  36. Wilfork is a really good player but he’s not HoF worthy. Ted Washington is the best nose tackle I’ve ever seen and he’s not in the Hall.

  37. Isn’t this tampering, since Wilfork is under contract with another team?

Why aren’t Patriots fans offering up their draft picks to the Texans? Fair is fair, right guys?
