Dan Snyder’s radio station fires critic of Dan Snyder’s football team

With a salary cap, a draft system that rewards the worst and penalizes the best, and rules that strive to create competitive balance, it’s hard to find consistency in the NFL.

That’s why it’s refreshing to know that the team in the nation’s capital is exactly and precisely as functional and focused off the field as on.

Today was supposed to be the debut of “The Man Cave,” on ESPN 980. That’s only interesting because the show was going to be hosted by former Washington Post beat writer Jason Reid, on the station owned by team owner Daniel Snyder.

As is sometimes the case in team-newspaper relationships when the team in question stinks and the newspaper does not, not everyone in the front office was a fan of Reid’s work. Though to the best of our research, he never once got the score of a game wrong, during a stretch when they had exactly one winning season in a seven-year span (40-72).

So this is where it gets interesting.

The show never did go on the air this morning. According to local media blog DCRTV.com, the show was canceled yesterday, and program director Chuck Sapienza (who presumably created the show and hired the talent) was fired as well.

Reid now works at ESPN.com, though his Twitter bio still lists him as the host of that show that never made the air this morning.

According to Dan Steinberg of the Post, a team source said the “widespread perception” was that top team officials “were miffed by the hiring of Reid, a sometimes harsh critic of the team in recent years.”

Because the team has been pretty bad lately, the local talk radio circuit doesn’t have a lot of positive to latch onto. Having done a little radio, let me tell you, there’s only so many times you can rehash that fabled 2005 playoff win, since there hasn’t been another one to go with it since then.

And while no one else has been fired from ESPN 980, it hardly seems coincidental that team president Bruce Allen did an interview on rival station 106.7 The Fan last week.

Perhaps there’s far more to this one than meets the eye.

But boy, on the surface, it sure looks like exactly what it looks like.

  1. Dan Snyder reminds me of the Emperor and his new clothes, but hey they are winning off the field whatever that is supposed to mean, its like pissing on ones leg and telling them its raining lol. If i were a Redskins season ticket holder or buy individual game tickets i will save my money.

  2. Glad to see the Redskins owners radio station take a stand against the dude from the Washington newspaper. He’s probably one of those folks that get butt hurt by the Redskins name even though there is nothing wrong with it.

  3. Typical Snyder and how the ***skins management has been run for years.

Sad to see that once again, they have no sense of self.

  4. What a joke of a franchise. Washington has no credibility. In the NFC East, there is one constant, Washington will always come in last. Cowboys, Eagles and Giants fans appreciated Snyder’s ownership of Washington.

  5. While I don’t support many of Snyder’s actions … as a Redskins fan and regular (unfortunate) reader and listener of Jason Reids … here is the perception from about 95% of Redskins fans … the guy creates and basks in controversy. Yes, the Redskins were bad last year. But JReid went out of his way to be obnoxious, create controversy, and supposedly drum up a lot of unnecessary drama IN the Redskins locker room by taking quotes out of context, pushing players to the brink and even getting into fights (or near fights) with other respectable journalists.

Most Redskins fans turn off the radio when he comes on and refuse to read his articles. He’s gotten to that point of “unbearable” and it became extremely clear he had an agenda and lost a lot of respect from fans. So this fan was doomed from the beginning. There was a lot of backlash from DC fanbase when it was announced. So, for once, I have to side with Snyder on this one.

  6. Why would you want to work in DC media when the team owner fires those with a desenting view?

Sports is becoming to bias whereby money/power is controlling honest and truthful talk.

  7. Not surprised. The amount of venom spewed by DC reporters and talk-show hosts last year reached an all-time high. There is going to be some blow-back from the the organization especially against guys who led the fan rage (i.e. Jason Reid).

All i know is, most fans are now taking a 3 year view of the team and we are EXTREMELY excited to finally have a real GM in Scot. No one expects much this year, but we believe Scot can turn things around in a few years.

    Hail!

  8. Jason Reid is a hack. There are plenty of people on ESPN 980 that are critical of Snyder. Heck, I’m listening to Kevin Sheenan and Thom Loverro right now.

  9. Really slow out there today it seems… Big fan of freedom of speech and I get the point being made here but when the product that gives Snyder the money to pay Reid is being bashed by Reid I’m not sure why Snyder would pay Reid. That is like Ford hiring someone to make a commercial stating that their cars are terribly designed and incapable of catching up to foreign makers….though it might be true…it makes no sense for Ford to do that, right? haha

  10. For 23 years (from the age of 9 until I was 32), I was a die-hard Redskins fan. As a kid, I wrote letters about the Redskins that were published in The Sporting News and Charisma Magazine, and as a teenager razzed my favorite rock artist about the Skins beating his Broncos in the Super Bowl–and he wrote me back! It was a great fan life (including the pre-Joe Gibbs years with 6 and 10 seasons and such).

But then … Dan Snyder came to town. Fired most of the Skins’ office staff (including career secretaries), destroyed the team’s tradition, and it hasn’t been remotely the same since. I held on for several years, as disgusting as his leadership immediately was.

When our grassroots movement in Nashville brought the Oilers to Tennesee in 1997, it was only a matter of time, before I’d had enough. I pulled for the Redskins as I attended their ’97 game against the Oilers, but that would be the last time I pulled against the Titans/Oilers. I literally let my heart choose as I watched the two teams play on a Monday night in 2000. Going in, I didn’t know who I would pull for. By half-time, I realized I was no longer a Redskins fan. … Thanks Dan Snyder. Thanks for that.

  11. I recall when they pulled Lee Hamilton’s reporter card because he was critical of the Spanos out in SD. Say what you want about Lee (Hacksaw) but it was ridiculous.

  12. Although I have to agree Reid was a hack generally, there are some other show hosts on that station who are probably taking note as Reid was not the only person there (or almost there) critical of the Skins and Little Danny.

Also, firing the long-time station manager Sapienza seems to indicate a more ominous underlying message.

  13. Snyder is such as woos.

You need critical people because you’re still relevant. Criticism gets fans excited in a positive and negative way.

Does not realize that apathy can come down the road. The last time I checked, DC is a melting pot. Like Eagles and Cowboys fans won’t wear their jerseys to Skins games???

  14. Gotta control the message. Thou shalt not speak ill of Danny Boy on Danny Boy’s station.

  15. So…wait. Snyder fires this dude from the radio station he owns for being critical of the ‘Skins. A little overly sensitive, but fine. He can play with his toys however he wants, I guess.

But it’s OK for his front office to give interviews to the competing sports station in town? Maybe it’s just me, but if he’s that controlling, why wouldn’t he make team interviews exclusive to his own station?

  16. So, in essence the story is that Snyder is equally incapable of running a radio station as he is running an NFL franchise – Understood.

  17. Jason Reid is a loser. Dan Snyder is a winner. Only an idiot would publicly bash an entity and then try to get a job from them. Only an idiot who works for said entity would hire a guy who repeatedly bashed the entity. There is no room here in the great city of Washington DC for that level of incompetence. Dan Snyder is the class of the NFL. He is always going out of his way to practice integrity, it comes natural to him, and the blessed by God Redskins are a reflection of his greatness. Our local radio stations are better and practice less blasphemy without them.

    Addition by subtraction.

  18. There are many sports beat-writers that live off of that scenario. Most of them call it “keeping it real” or other such nonsense and actively seek out controversy because that is what gets them noticed. It’s a shame. A journalist can write a critical piece without being nasty but far too often they don’t–especially when they see one of their sources or friends on the team being treated “unfairly”. I bet there are at least one of these kind of guys reporting on every team in the NFL.

  19. This was a pathetic move on Snyder’s part. I was looking forward to the new show, if for no other reason than it was going to mercifully replace Mike and Mike.

Sapienza seemed like a good, well-respected guy at that station. I appreciated his efforts to reach out to listeners and engage via social media. I am sure his firing will not go over well with the whole staff.

No idea whether the new show would have been any good. But Washington’s football team and its ownership deserve all the criticism they have gotten from the media. It is a Keystone Kops organization that cannot help but continually prove its ineptness. Only the long-ago glory years prevent the franchise from being lumped in with the Browns as a factory of sadness.

  20. This is what happens when the sports media kills the golden goose by creating rumors, jumping to conclusions, making assumptions and focuses almost exclusively on negatives. Kinda like what the rest of the sports media is doing to the NFL right now.

  21. Every single host on every single show on that station is openly critical of the Redskins every day during the season and most days during the off-season. They are NOT censored by Snyder or management.

I guess you can and will spin any story any way you want, but Reid was not removed from that show because of his negative opinions about the team. It was the way he conducted himself, period. As much as I despise Snyder, I actually don’t blame him deciding not to provide a platform to this gas bagging hack and for firing the clueless PD who thought it was a good idea to hire him.

Now end the podcast delay and FREE MR. TONY!!!

  22. “Maybe it’s just me, but if he’s that controlling, why wouldn’t he make team interviews exclusive to his own station?”

Actually, he has already effectively done that – he only allows stations that pay him a fee to get locker room access to players for interviews – he calls them “media partners” (google it). This practice has been noted in the Post (which Little Danny also hates and has tried to cur off).

Never has the League had an owner who so perfectly defined “malevolent”, “evil” and “incompetent.” He’s the true triple threat.

  23. Snyder is a colossal embarrassment.
Have some friends who are Skins fans. Feel sorry for them. Their team will never win a Super Bowl again as long as this yahoo is owning the team.

  24. “When the team in question stinks and the newspaper does not”…. Has the author of this article ever looked at that rag?!?! The Post is horrible and Reid is a joke.

I love to hate on Snyder, but I will not back a WaPo employee, especially not someone like Reid who I can’t believe was given a job as a journalist.

  25. this happens every day to journalists covering teams all across america. If you have one negative thing to say about North Korea….errrr Team “X”….that team strips you of your media credentials.

  26. The timing of this is what bothers me. Dan Snyder didn’t REALIZE that Jason Reid, an open critic of the Redskins, was going to be operating a show on his radio station? He purposely waited for the day before the show aired to stick it to Jason Reid. The really sad part is that Chuck Sapienza is losing his gig as well. He was a good guy and he did his job well. Hopefully he lands somewhere quickly. Dan Snyder is a little punk that takes his ball home when the kids say he sucks. Petulant little weasel.

  27. “As is sometimes the case in team-newspaper relationships when the team in question stinks and the newspaper does not,”

But that isn’t the situation. Both the team and the newspaper stink.

  28. Not many people in DC like Jason Reid it’s not just us Redskins fans who can’t stand him. I heard people who don’t like the Skins say they can’t stand Jason Reid too.

  29. If Dan Snyder only wants to hear positive things about the Skins Kevin Sheehan,Brian Mitchell, Rick”Doc Walker and Steve Czaban would not have jobs because they aren’t afraid to bash the Skins or him.

  30. What’s wrong with this? If I employed someone who criticized me, I’d fire him/her as well.

The guy HAD to know that you do NOT rip your employer in public or you suffer the consequences.

He did it anyway now he’s on the streets, hopefully he’s learned a lesson from this. Obama will take care of this fool now.

    Good job Mr. Snyder!

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Good story. More evidence that great organizations and great leaders play a major role in winning. Washington will never get out of the basement because the NFLs focus on parity falls short. It is short sighted focusing only on players overlooking ownership

  32. For years, way before Jason Reid was ever hired to work for the Washington Post the two businesses have been against one another. The Post has become a much more Liberal Progressive Newspaper since the 1990’s (new ownership took over) and blasted the Redskins from sun up to sundown 24/7 everyday of the year. Since buying the Redskins in the mid 1990’s, Snyder has been a egotistical monster who refuses to listen to any sound judgement when it comes to running the Professional Football Organization.

Which is worse? In my book they are both profoundly wrong with their separate business decisions. Snyder fires Reid. Why? Because he worked for the Liberal Progressive Newspaper Washington Post. On the other hand, The Washington Post has declared “War” on the Washington Redskins team name and has been doing so for years now, with zero hints of ending their attacks on a proud name that has zero intentions of being a “racists” name.

I liked Reid’s reporting/stories on the Redskins while he worked at the Post for numerous years (9-10 years I believe). If anyone was fair with his reporting it was Reid. He was spot on too many times to count!! Other reporters (some no longer employed with the Post) were just plain disrespectful towards the Redskins and their contempt for the team name.

I could also mention the the Newspaper’s Head Editor also declared they would not use the name “Redskins” in any part of their Editorial Section… which I found hypocritical and a slap in the face to almost 80 years of not only Redskin’s fan pride but Newspaper history. A poor mistake was made by him as well in my opinion. I emailed a long response as to why he would make such a decision but never got a reply back. A slap in the face to a READER of the paper for over 40 years!!!

So Snyder then fires Reid for probably none other than guilt by association… another big mistake.

My conclusion is this… we all have our 1st Amendment rights (Freedom of Speech) and should be thankful for those liberties/rights. Two people were fired despite those freedoms, for expressing viewpoints that go against Snyder’s opinions. The newspaper (Washington Post) lost numerous readers (probably thousands) for simply attacking a name that is anything BUT a racist’s name. They too, are guilty for eliminating Freedom of Speech and not allowing fan’s to express their opinion’s regarding the team name.

Both parties are simply wrong and are acting as if they are anything but adults. The Readers and listeners are ultimately the ones who lose out. It is wrong (on both parties) to not allow Freedom of Speech to take place. Even if they are opinions one does not agree with, both parties would be wise to end this childish feud and grow up. In the meantime I still refuse to read the Post and Snyder continues to be one of the most despised (not for fighting for the team’s name) Owners in all of sports for moves just like this.

  33. I hate to say it, but I clearly see those who are sponsored by Snyder on this blog. They are so transparent. And for the record, 95% of Redskins fans only agree on one thing. Dan Snyder is the worst thing that ever happened to our team.

  34. Snyder’s a joke…but Jason Reid is HORRIBLE. Doesn’t deserve ESPN or his own radio show.

Just like the Jason LaConfora mistake several years ago… people need to learn WashPo is not some incubator for great sports writers. Wilbon and Kornheiser aren’t coming again, folks.

  35. I would be a lot more upset if it weren’t Jason Reid. He has such an inflammatory, obnoxious attitude and tone. We get it Jason, the team sucks.

  36. To be fair, canceling “the Man Cave” sounds like the best move Snyder ever did. Now if he can just move the team…

  37. The ones who are defending Jason Reid probably have never read or heard him talk, all he does is bash RG3 and the Skins. Everyone is sick of it.

  38. Snyder is such a joke. He needs to sell the team. So he basically just wants positive Redskins propaganda on the radio? You can only fool people for so long. People aren’t stupid. They’ll seek out opinions that are critical to how Snyder has run this once-proud franchise into the toilet in recent years. What an embarrassment. Everyone should boycott this joke of a team until Snyder sells.

  39. And reading some of these opinions, I have to think that everyone on Snyder’s payroll has chimed in on this post. No one in their right mind should be defending Snyder. He throws millions at basket cases. He hires crazy people like Shanny. He has turned the entire Fed Ex stadium into an experience that only the 1% can enjoy. Long story short: His team is the embarrassment of the NFL right now. Way to go Snyder. The truth hurts, doesn’t it.

  40. @Metitmetin you obviously haven’t heard the station becausealmost everyone on the air bashes Dan Synder and the Skins. The difference is that Reid does it constantly and personally attacks RG3 and Snyder without being provoked.

  41. Jason Reid is a Redskins hater, if you obviously know about his writing in the Washington Post, which most of you probably dont. he also hates the Wizards. But all you people see is who and what Dan Synder has done over the past couple years.

Jason Reid is a hater and so is the rest of you guys!

  42. Big deal. A man owns a company and an employee or contractor bites the hand that feeds him and gets canned. Whats so strange? Why don’t you start talking trash about PFT and ESPN and see what happens.
I don’t like Snyder one iota but really, this surprises you?

  43. Yeah, there’s plenty of Redskins fire on the local stations, including 980. Maybe this one was going to tip the table too far though. The Redskins do represent the United States of America, based on location in our Nations Capitol, so I hope they can turn it around

  44. Jason Reid is a liberal Democrat who works at at Liberal Democrat newspaper. His job is to spread hate on Conservatives like Snyder and Bruce and to foment criticism of the Skins Politically incorrect name. He got fired. good.

  45. first of all, 980 employs Brian Mitchell, there are few more critical of the Redskins than he. Jason Reid was critical of the team due to his dislike of Snyder, not the poor performance. If there were no stories he would just create one citing the ever popular “unnamed source” or “someone familiar with the team’s thinking.” Hilarious that he has had the shortest radio show run ever.

  46. it does not matter if what the guy had to say about the REDSKINS was true or not. did he really expect the guy who he ripped on to pay him to rip on him?

  47. This is how you get better.

    Stifle all dissent.

    Tick, tock, tick, tock.

Change the name and maybe the curse will be lifted.

  48. Jason Reid writes every column as if he has an axe to grind. It’s not just reporting, it comes across as personal. Even as an avid local listener of that station, I had already decided to avoid this new show. Reid makes football feel like like there’s a constant conspiracy happening, which takes the joy out of it for me. I’m a loyal fan, but I follow sports for recreation, not drama. Good riddance.

  49. Are the ones defending Jason Reid really on his side or are they only doing it because they hate Dan Snyder and the Skins?

  50. I’ve rad a lot of Jason Reid’s stuff and like most sportswriters, I agree with some of it, disagree with some of it, and, unless they’re talking about the Skins, could care little of nothing about the rest of it. As the owner of the radio station, Emperor Dan has the right to fire and hire whoever he wants. He has a long history of hiring yes-men, and anyone hiring a non-yes-man would expect to be terminated. Ideally you would value truth over agreement, but it’s certainly not a requirement. Dan can do to the radio station the same thing he’s done to the team: run it into the ground.

The only difference is, I care about the team.

  51. I hope Jason Reid ends up working for a paper or radio station in Philly,NY or Dallas and starts bashing your owner and team, you will see what us in DC have been saying about him.

  52. This article completely ignores the other part of this is story that is ESPN 980 planned to shift Mike and Mike to their weak sister station 570. Mike and Mike is ESPN’s signature show. It is very possible, and very likely that someone up in Bristol Conn let ownership know that if you want to continue to use the ESPN call letters you cannot move Mike and Mike to the weak signal of 570.

The last minute nature of this is certainly bad PR, but there is constant criticism of the Redskins by the hosts on 980. It just doesn’t follow that this show was dumped solely because of Jason Reid’s presence. Sorry Snyder bashers.

  53. Living in Md and workin in DC this shows how terrible the organization is. Jason Reid was awesome whenever he was on the air with the junkies, and was quick to take players to task. He wasn’t one of the reporters bashing the name, he just told it like it was. Which is why I will continue to never listen to that station, rather listen to the Junks, Dukes, Grant and Danny

  54. I just heard that Dan Snyder didn’t know that Jason Reid was going to be the co host until last week, how in the world is that possible?

  55. It’s not from his criticism of the team, because people on ESPN 380 bash the team all the time. I don’t know how many times I’ve listened as Chris Cooley has ripped them to shreds on the air.

It’s because Jason Reid is a joke of a journalist who should be working for the National Enquirer or Weekly World News.

And BTW I am not on Dan Snyder’s payroll.

  56. Good. The way I look at it, if you want to talk trash about the Redskins get a job with the Dallas Morning News. I bet Seattle, Green Bay or New England doesn’t trash their teams in the media. Just because the Skins are rebuilding doesn’t mean the local media should put down the ownership, front office and team. Support your local NFL team. San Diego and Oakland will wish they had an NFL team to support in the near future. Don’t take what you have for granted.

  57. Seriously you don’t think the Washington media should voice their opinion if it hurts Dan Snyder’s feelings? They truth is the Redskins have been terrible ever since he has had the team. He stinks! His leadership stinks, his stadium stinks. This is pure facts!

  58. The on air personalities at ESPN 980 are plenty critical of the team, so it’s not as black and white as this article or the DC Sports Bog would make it seem.

Regardless of why the show was cancelled, Reid is absolutely dreadful in his many radio and tv appearances. Why anyone would consider him a good fit to co-host a radio show is beyond me. That person should be fired and committed to an insane asylum.
