He is risen: Eagles bring Tim Tebow in for a workout

Chip Kelly continues to collect running backs at a dizzying pace.

Wait, what?

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Eagles coach Chip Kelly has just turned his own personal don’t-give-a-damn meter to 11, bringing quarterback Tim Tebow in for a workout.

He’s just messing with us at this point.

The idea of Tebow and Mark Sanchez together again is almost too perfect to put into words. Kelly carries himself with a smartest-guy-in-the-room vibe anyway, but bringing in a guy the rest of the NFL had given up on speaks to a bit of hubris.

Could Tebow run the Eagles’ system, considering his roots running a spread offense at Florida? Sure. Maybe. Who knows?

But the rest of the league hasn’t saw fit to see for themselves, which might be the real reason Kelly did this.

  1. In Chips offense it may not be that far fetched that he just might work out. I am not an Eagles fan but I sure wish I could hear Philly talk radio right about now.

  2. if kelly could pull this one off i’d willingly bow.
because the nfl gave up on one of the nicest men of the game. granted he cant play conventional nfl qb spread oh thats his element…

  3. This is fantastic. Either he really thinks ole Timmy can run his offense or he’s just messing with all of us by now. Can’t Fault Tebow for never giving up though!

  4. What’s the risk? He either shows he’s grown substantially as a passer and you look like a genius for finding him, or he’s proven to be inadequate as a QB and you don’t sign him. Why people are avoiding Tebow like the plague is beyond me.

  5. Kelly’s gonna trade Bradford, pay Tebow the league minimum, and go all in with Mariota.

Sure am glad Chip is addressing that defense he was so concerned about when trading McCoy.

  6. good for tebow, he won a division/playoff game and it out of the league yet ivan drago jr aka josh mccown continues to get jobs.
    makes no sense at all.

  7. He’s one hell of a punter.
That and he’s the prototypical full back / reserve TE.

(if Tebow throws a pass at this tryout, i’ll flip)

  8. honestly, i think if he goes here, he could rebound. this offense is the type of offense he can run, a no-huddle spread option is the best fit for Tebow. now will it happen, likely not.

  9. If I was a good team – say top quarter of the draft – and had a roster spot – I would bring him in and kick the tires, see what he is willing to do – by all accounts at minimum he is a good locker room guy and a workout guy – if I was going to carry 3 QBs and could at least get some limited use out of him (maybe a 5-10 play package, or as a H back type) I would definitely sign him up. And I bet he comes cheap. (phrasing – are we not doing phrasing anymore?)

  10. Here is a guy who has never done anything wrong and is vilified because he is a Christian. Your headline is very rude. He may not be a NFL QB but that doesn’t mean you should criticize him for his faith.

  11. Tebow, Sanchez, Bradford and Murray to Jax for Marriota. That is the plan. Kelly is a genius.

  12. Every time he makes the news that song Neon Deon invented goes off in my head: TeeeeBow, Wooooo OH. Teeebow. LOL

Chip got rid of my favorite QB – Nick Foley
But I’ve always felt Tebow would work in Chips system. This could get interesting.

  13. Chip Kelly is Josh McDaniels lol

I feel like Chip Kelly is a ten year old playing Madden. Next, he’ll sign JaMarcus Russell and Trent Richardson.

  14. Not a fan of your headline. A little respect for the holiest doctrine of Christianity would be much appreciated.

  15. hahahahaaha….out of all the wacky, unpredictable, bold, crazeee moves Chip has made….this is the best……No doubt we could all use some divine intervention.

  16. Laugh all you want, but Chip Kelly is showing once again why he’s the smartest guy in the room. Bringing in Tim Tebow is another brilliant move, one that only Chip coulda made. Go Eagles!

  17. Well that made my day. Here I thought Timmy was going to fight ISIS, carrying Daddy’s Bibles.

  18. Chip Kelly is the gift that keeps on giving to football writers and bloggers and commenters.

Star MLB and two CBs isn’t enough?

    Thornton/Logan/Cox
    Barwin, Kendricks, Alonso, Graham
Maxwell, Jenkins, ???, Thurmond (Boykin in the slot)

  20. Let’s be realistic. Tebow, as bad as he is at times at QB – is still as good as a lot of QBs still in the NFL.

While he isn’t anywhere close to the top 10, probably not even the top 15 or 20, I’d still take him over:

Geno Smith and Josh McCown. Probably over RG3 and possibly over Eli Manning who is a terrible QB who amazingly gets hot in short spurts (that incredibly turned out to be worth 2 Superbowls). Mind you, if Eli got his head on straight, there isn’t a conversation – but until then…

  21. Chip, is suffering from PTSD. The only way this will work, is the Eagles rotates Bradford for the drop back plays, Sanchez for the Butt Fumble plays, and Tee bow for the roll out plays to run. The Eagles will be the first team to start 3 quarterbacks during 4 quarters. Defensive Coordinator would be drinking coffee till midnight, trying to pick their poison. (LOL)

  22. Eagles picked him up on my Madden franchise as a backup. Needless to say, I was pissed off that I forgot to edit his overall rating to a 30 because I was convinced he disappeared.

  23. The only explanation I can come up with is that the media conspired to pool its money together and pay Chip on the side. He just made them a ton of money during these slow NFL times…

  24. Thank GOD!
I can still say GOD, right? This is supposed to be a FREE country, at least that’s how the Constitution was designed.

Tebow is perfect for Kelly’s offense and I hope he becomes a top flight QB for the Iggles.

The media would HATE to see Tebow succeed, and that is part of why I want to see him succeed. The media loves Sam, a person who used his personal sexual choice to get him drafted.

    Go Tebow!

  25. Tim Tebow was out of the NFL because:

    1. He can not read an NFL defense;
    2. His throws resemble wounded ducks looking for a pond to die in;
    3. Will not try to improve upon items 1 and 2.

The ability to read an NFL defense, pre-snap and during play, and make accurate throws based on those reads is the definition of a NFL Quarterback (i.e. Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, among others). Failing to do these things, regardless of other assets, significantly reduces your chances of success against NFL competition (see also RG3).

Yes, he won ONE playoff game, in Denver, against an aging and depleted Steeler team. What happened the week after that ONE playoff win (this is rarely brought up)? The list of NFL QB’s who have won ONE playoff game is quite long and not very distinguished.

I also believe the circus surrounding him is scaring off/has scared off most teams. Given the distractions and headaches players have caused teams the last few years, I think many will see the Tebow circus as too distracting and divisive to consider given his talent level.

Tim Tebow, don’t quit your day job, it’s all the football you’re qualified for now.

  26. Anyone thinking this can work should try to remember that the issue wasn’t a “system”, it was that in any system a QB is required to throw a lot and accurately. Tim Tebow throws like a high school QB.

  27. “Red alert, everyone to your comment bunkers. This is not a drill!”

    Hahaha… that’s Great !!

but seriously, Belichick brought him in to camp, why not the chipper

  28. It’s amazing how an unintelligent, good looking person can have so many people so mesmerized.

The boy can’t read defenses. Therefore can’t play QB, but because of his good looks, men and women alike are enamored with him.

If Tebow were a below average looking guy, despite his religious stance, people would not be this fascinated by him. Which shows you how shallow the majority of people really are.

  29. Broncos had the number 1 rushing offense in the league when Tebow was running the read option offense with Willie McGahee. Would like to see what he can do with Demarco Murray!

  30. Chip should also bring in Troy Smith, Matt Lienart and Vince Young to really troll everyone even more.

  31. Tim Tebow has more playoff wins than Chip Kelly.
In the last 7 years. Tim Tebow has more playoff wins than the whole Eagle franchise.
Karma wise, he certainly cannot hurt.

  32. If he makes it I hope he keeps all his religious stuff to himself. There is no place in football for thanking God for this and that. God doesn’t take sides. Luck, talent, dedication and preparation helps you win not God.

  33. As an Eagles fan i would cry if this guy was the starter. That being said, if he cme in to run a drive or two a game running the full on read option. I’d be a ok with that. Good luck tackling tebow and Murray and having any energy in the 4th quarter

  34. The rest of the league hasn’t seen (saw) fit……

Maybe there is some truth to the rumor that Chip might trade Bradford!

  35. You see this play out in bars everywhere. Take a 6 (Bradford) and stand him next to a 2 (Tebow) which makes him look like a 9 in comparison.

We see what you’re up to Chip.

  36. “A little respect for the holiest fairy tale of Christianity would be much appreciated.”

    There, fixed your statement.

  37. i’dsign him in a minute,i just would not let him play qb,i’d use him like the steelers used slash for three or 4 seasons.he’d be great catching passes out the backfield or in the slot.

Wow…persecution complex? Nowhere in that silly article was there a shred of criticism of his faith…at all. Complete projection on your part. The only thing he did wrong was be bad as an NFL QB. He seems like a great guy. I know a lot of great guys who have been let go from jobs. NFL jobs are finite. They employ criminals regularly, if you can play, you are on a roster, if you can’t, you’re not. Christian, or not. Maybe he makes it, maybe he doesn’t, but it doesn’t excuse your whining.

To be fair – you should also add one of the top 10 college football players of all time – check the stats

  40. Nothing is surprising me about the Eagles at this point. No other team has cleaned house this much…Maclin gone….Shady gone….Foles gone.

Unfortunately, I think this much change is going to bring some instability. But I do have to think Kelly knows what he is doing. If this Tebow thing is anything more than a workout, it will get very interesting.

  41. this cant be… I just took a picture of him in Scottsdale, AZ. he was walking his dog (yellow lab) and using a cane… walking stick… whatever.. noticeable limp!!!

Because he sucks. If he were any good he would be on an NFL roster.

  43. If Tebow gets signed, look for the single wing to make it’s reappearance in Philly. Could you imagine a backfield of Tebow, Murray and Matthews in a single wing formation?

  44. They did just give DeMarco Murray the farm……..so they might need a QB who will play for peanuts to make it under the cap.

    Enter Tim Tebow…….

  45. Clear as day, the Chipper has lost his mind. I am sure Lurie is regretting giving all personnel decisions to this madman….I love it and so does the rest of the NFL.

    ========================================

Well, like Florio says, he talks about his religion too much and stuff.

  47. NFL front offices and talking heads are hilarious. There are maybe 10 QBs who are ‘franchise’ type guys. Guys that can stand in the pocket and go through their reads, deliver the ball with accuracy and make all the throws. The rest? Pretenders. Guys like Tebow can run a specific system. And well. But instead of trying (and succeeding as the Broncos did) they’d rather trout out a long list of pretenders. This reminds me of how Bonds was railroaded out of MLB when he could still play (OPS 1.045 last year at 42 and he still wanted to play). Hopefully whether with Tebow or someone else the NFL will stop trying to fit a square peg in a round hole at the QB position.

Tebow has a winning record and a playoff victory.

    Give me some TEBOW.
    ——————————————————————–
So does Jay Cutler, by that rationale, you want him?

  49. Wonder if he throws the ball as well as tom house says he does…..Nfl should have invited tebow to the vets combine. Did they think people wouldnt want to see this?

  50. restorativejusticeprogram says: Mar 16, 2015 3:09 PM

All this TEBOW hate says so much about the haters.

He is a better person than you are, better looking and has a better future.
    ————————
Tim would never judge me like that.

  51. Can you imagine Tebow in a wishbone formation, and not the QB? The guy has talent, and in open space he got the gift. Funny how people hate a guy for trying and also being a good steward to his fellow citizen.

  52. Haters are gonna hate, but the fact remains that Timmy Tebow THREW A PASS to beat Big Ben/Steelers in a post-season game. “They can’t take that away….”

  53. I really like Tim Tebow. I don’t believe he can excel at QB in the NFL.

But I’d love to see him contribute to a team at TE or Fullback….any capacity really….he’d be good for the league…and once no longer QB on any team the media hoopla surrounding TT would quickly disappear into history, and therefore become a non issue with teams considering signing him.

  54. OK, it’s a WORKOUT.

JaWalrus worked out for the Bears in 2012 (I think). It didn’t work out. He didn’t make the team. This is not an indication that Tebow will make the Eagles.

I imagine once the sign-carrying legions come out in force, Chip & everyone in Philly will realize that no 3rd string backup QB is worth the hassle and tedium of dealing with Tebow’s fans…

  55. Marshawn Lunch says:

Wait, isn’t Sam Bradford the Eagles starter??
    —————-

No, no, no… you’re thinking of Nick Foles “for the next million years”.

  56. John 11:25-26

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Tebow, though he died, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Tim shall never die.”

  57. I watched Tebow steamroll Brian Urlacher and get up and talk to him about fishing in Florida. You collide with Urlacher and still have enough brain wattage to chit chat about fishing with a smile on your face you’ve got to be a tough son of a gun. Granted Urlacher was on his last crutch at the time but Tebow certainly is good enough to be in a training camp to compete for a backup job.

  58. Chip used to go for two all the time at Oregon. Why wouldn’t he want a quarterback who specializes in goal-line situations? Teach Tebow to hold and line the kicker up in the backfield, and they can kick anyway if they don’t like the read on the defense.

  59. “How is Chip Kelly the smartest man in the room? Two seasons, one game playoff exit first season, no playoffs second season.”
    —–
Chill out. So if “you” were Chip and if “you” didn’t excel your team to the playoffs with the previous coaches player choices you’d be more tolerant perhaps?

I say let the man choose his team. You’ll have all the time in the world to then be critical of him afterwards. Makes sense to me.

  60. First off, Great Headline this time!

Secondly, if Kelly signs Tebow, with all these changes and goes like 3 -5 after 8 games, can we only imagine what the price on Kelly’s head will be. Eagle fans aren’t kind or patient.

To quote a former Eagle…”get cha popcorn ready!”

  61. Gator boy is the greatest example that shows why character is overrated!!!

No team has character!!! Teams are con artists and the media and the public are gullible because they hate the truth.

  62. Running the spread offense that Chip wants to run kills QB’s

So he is stocking up on throw away QB’s

That is all that TT is

    ——————————————————————
You must not be a Bears fan…Urlacher was NEVER a hitter, couldn’t shed blocks that well either, he was a speed and size freak, an incredible sideline to sideline “tackler” and excelled at coverage as required in the Tampa 2. Hitting hard, was not a part of his game. So a collision with Urlacher, and winning it, is not that much to speak of. Outrunning him? Now you’re talking…about fishing and anything else you want.

  64. Make fun of Tebow all you want for whatever reason, but did you have to take a shot at his religion?

    Really? Feels pretty unnecessary.

  65. Wow, the ultra conservatives and religious fanatics are out in force today. Newsflash, Tebow is such a polarizing figure because of his in-your-face and shoving-religion-down-your-throat style. There are plenty of religious fundamentalists in the league but none are so overt as Tebow. Plus none of them ever made a Super Bowl commercial about a highly controversial and politically polarizing subject like Tebow did before ever setting foot in the league.

  66. It’s incredible all the insulted people injecting religion and the perceived slight to it, in their understanding of the article. There was no mention of his religion, NONE. So please, please stop, or go refine your reading comprehension skills. You are the exact reason people get annoyed when he’s brought up. A section of people get so sensitive for him, and take personally, things that aren’t even written, except in their sadly shaped imagination. This is the exact reason sane people want him to just go away, regardless whether he can play or not.

  67. I know he doesn’t want to play any position but quarterback, but maybe he should have a talk with Julian Edelman. I’ll bet Edelman is happy he made the switch to receiver instead of leaving football. Plus Julian got to throw a beautiful pass last year!

  68. The first thing that Tim needs to do is keep his personal faith to himself and don’t wear it on his sleeve. I’m a Florida Alum, but I have to admit that seeing scriptures written on his face, doing the Tebow stance just offends a lot of people and then he starts taking flack for stuff unrelated to football. Look at an athlete like Percy Harvin, another Gator. He is so versatile that defenses could not figure out what he was going to do. Run, Catch a Pass and Yes, throw the ball. Tebow can be the same type of player with his size, decent speed and his ability to connect with the quarterback with his routes.

  69. can we make double entendre headlines about life style choices if the end from Mizzou does something in the senior combine?

That end doesn’t play much defense.

  70. This is truly great news. All Tim needs is a chance to show his natural talent. Let us pray for his return to the NFL. He will also inspire his teammates with his great passion.
Chip – make this happen – you won’t regret it.

  71. He’s proven he can’t pass long passes, pass on target, or read defenses. Jim Rome saye he’s a “leader” ? A “leader” leads by example, which this guy can’t do.

  72. bettis3636 says: Mar 16, 2015 2:54 PM

The media KILLS THIS MAN!!! Allllllllll hes every done is win and win with a smile!

    ——-
Yes, and then again, not really. He gets good comments, and nobody seems to really crush the guy over not being good enough to play. They really don’t get after him for being too stubborn to switch positions, either. They point these things out, but they don’t kill him for any of it.

Where the media is really killing him is by setting up camp and gathering for press conferences when he is signed as a #3 qb. And hanging around to hear what the #3qb has to say after practice or a game he never played in. If Tebow changed positions, and if he made a team and got on the field, the media would turn things into such a circus that he would end up getting cut as a distraction to the rest of the team.

  73. Supposedly Timbo took the criticism about his skills to heart & went into intensive training & now has a killer spiral.

I can neither confirm nor deny that this gift involved a transaction with Mephistopheles.

  74. Next up for Chip: He’s going to give Michael Sam a workout just to watch Sporting Press explode.

  75. Eagles fans and doubters- when is the last time you won a playoff game? When is the last time Tebow won a playoff game? When is the last time your QB threw a TD pass to win a game a playoff game? When was the last time you had a Heisman Trophy winner? If the system fits and he fits that what is the problem? If it does not fit ….where have you lost? There are lots of QB’s that came back to win after failures. I think many of you have a problem with his Faith and his evangelical spirit. Well, there are lots of kids here and in the Philippine’s that like his spirit. If his name was Muhammad and he sat on a prayer rug after every TD would you say the same? Just saying….

  76. Tebow is a winner. It is just that simple. Won at Florida. Won in Denver. If the offense is right, he can bring a team victories.

  77. Tebow is working hard to improve.
Working with Tom Brady’s coach Tom House in LA for past two years. May surprise some folks…

  78. As a Nole and a Steelers fan, I have EVERY reason to dislike Tebow, but I don’t. I think he’s a great guy who even though was a pain in our arse when he played at UF and with the Broncos, deserves another shot. I don’t believe that there’s not a place for him in the NFL considering some of the QBs that are actually considered starters.
