One of the biggest problems with having a trial in an open courtroom is that the process of trying the case results in all sorts of secrets being exposed.

Here’s one that emerged from the recently-completed trial regarding the Super Bowl XLV seating fiasco. Via Jeff Mosier of the Dallas Morning News, the NFL projected $28 million profit for Super Bowl XLV. In contrast, Super Bowl XLIV in Miami generated a profit of $7.4 million, and Super Bowl XLIII generated a profit of $2.3 million.

That figure doesn’t include TV contracts or sponsorships. Which means that playing the game in a really large stadium is good for business.

Which begs the question of why Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn’t tried to host another Super Bowl in his really large stadium. Maybe it’s the lack of a reliable plan for removing multiple inches of ice that may or may not return the week of the game. Maybe it’s the ticket fiasco.

Regardless, it’s not for the lack of a profitable game.
