Stevie Johnson to pick Pats or Chargers on Tuesday morning

Free-agent receiver Stevie Johnson soon won’t be a free agent any longer.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the former Bills and 49ers receiver intends to pick between the Chargers and Patriots on Tuesday morning.

The source says the Jets received “heavy consideration,” but that Johnson feels good about San Diego and New England after visits on Friday and Monday, respectively.

Joining the Patriots would create even more AFC East intrigue, given that Johnson traditionally has had success against former Patriots and now Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis.  Johnson was cut last week by the 49ers, who acquired him via trade with the Bills last year.

  1. When a guy leaves Foxboro without signing they usually don’t sign. If a guy really wants to be there they know it and close the deal.

San Diego and Miami are for guys that want to enjoy the rest of their career. Nothing wrong with that; for everyone other than the a very few people that’s an ideal way to end a career. New England is for guys that want to win. No, New England is for guys that need to win.

  2. Coming down to cash or a SB. I bet he chooses immortality. But I’m romantic like that.

See you in foxboro this summer, Stevie.

  3. To all the people who are going to complain saying “we already have enough WRs”….have you ever heard of something called depth? The offense is great the way it is, but if Gronk or Edelman go down the Pats are screwed….this would be a nice pick up for the Pats.

  4. Dear Stevie

Please do the BBN a favor and let it be the chargers. Rich Brooks hate NE

    Thank you

  5. Free agent always want to play for the pats unless they aren’t willing to come at least in the ballpark in garunteed money like what happened to revis.

  6. I HATE THE PATRIOTS BUT IT WOULD BENEFIT STEVIE JOHNSON TO GO TO NEW ENGLAND. THIS IS ONE RECEIVER THAT OWNS REVIS ISLAND

  7. You’ll get more run in SD Stevie. Only way you get any play in that TE heavy offense in NE is if Edelman or Amendola get hurt. Rivers can make plays after the pocket breaks down which is when you’re most valuable. Brady a statue that relies on precision.

  8. Johnson should go to San Diego.

They lost Eddie Royal and Malcom Floyd has had an injury history (neck).

Plus, since it seems so many people get hurt in san diego he can get more playing time.

  9. California highest state income tax 13.3 percent. Massachusets, 5.4 percent. And Mass isn’t running out of water in a year. Plus pretty much guaranteed playoff money. Not even a real choice

  10. As a former Buffalo Bills player joining the Patriots is not an option. You are always a BillsMafia member!!! The Bills should have signed you back!!!

  11. Former Bills tight end Scott Chandler said of his choice to sign with NE: “Not often you get to play with the best ever”. Stevie should follow suit.

  12. He played for the Bills and was traded to the 49ers, AFC East law dictates he must return to the division.

  13. As much as I would love to see him in our offense …. San Diego is definitely gonna pay him way more. Hes gonna be a charger . But if the pats get him, someone tell me how you game plan for GRONK, Chandler, Edelman, LaFell, Johnson, and amendola …..LETHAL.

  14. Stevie – Would you prefer to achieve something and own a ring or just kiss the rings? This may be your only opportunity to be able to tell your grandchildren that you caught TDs from the greatest QB in history and were coached by the greatest coach of all time? It’s not a difficult decision.
The bigger question is whether Stevie has the character, skills and capacity to learn to become a Patriot.

  15. ReligionIsForIdiots….. I hope you make things right before you meet your maker. Praying for you dude. You’ll have a change of heart when you breathe your last breath. Dude. God bless man

  16. The success against Revis stuff is ridiculous. One game he has 8 catches for 75 yards. Had had 11 targets. Next game 2 catches 12 yards when covered by Reev. Before that 3 for 85, 55 of which came on a deep sideline route perfect throw at 19-0 Jets with game decided.

  17. Either way his QB situation will be better than last year. If Stevie is chasing a ring he should pick New England. If 60 degree evenings in winter are his thing he’ll pick San Diego

  18. the pats were and handoff away from being the Atlanta Braves of the NFL. They were a dropped 4th quarter TD pass by an aging veteran in AFC title game from losing 4 consecutive home playoff games surrounded by 2 SB losses to a 6th seed from the NFC. Greatest ever?

  19. The reason he hasn’t made a decision yet, is obvious;

The Chargers will pay him slightly more money in a better climate and better part of the country,

    VS.

The Patriots offer a greater chance at playoff success.

And I’m a Charger fan, so I’m just being real.

Ultimately, I think that he might get better stats in San Diego too. Relax, I’m not saying Rivers is better than Brady… Just that I think with Royal gone, Stevie could be Rivers’ new best friend (other than perennial TD machine, Antonio Gates, of course). Brady seems to favor the unusually small or unusually large receiver, like Welker or Gronk. I rarely see him targeting conventionally-sized wide outs. Apologies if I’m mistaken. At 6’2, Johnson isn’t a Welker and isn’t a Gronk. Likewise though, Rivers has historically tended to show a favorability to toss to oversized receivers himself (or dump off to RB), like Gates, Vjax, Floyd, etc. But that has seemed to change recently, especially with Floyd at 5’10 catching 7 TD’s last year. Plus, Rivers is remarkable in his ability to form instant bonds with new receivers, which has been on display the last several years with constant injuries forcing us to start nobodies who become instant playmakers.

  20. Maybe I’m stuck in 2012, but I would think Stevie Johnson is better than amendola, lafell, Dobson, and whoever else is at WR. I think he’s better than Edelman too but Edelman fits perfectly in that offense. Gronk, Edelman , and Stevie Johnson is scary when Brady is flinging it.

  21. Seriously? Does anyone really think that’s even a choice to choose from? A championship team with a championship history versus a team that has been to the Superbowl once and got waxed….. Puh lease….. Chargers, lol…

  22. I bet my house and barn that the Pats offered less. I am that confident at how cheap they are.

  23. Came back from two 14 point defficits in a playoff game, first time that that has ever been done, ever. Greatest 4th quarter comeback in Super Bowl history. The greatest………ever

  24. They were also a helmet catch and a back shoulder away from being 6 time champions… So ya

  25. Veteran receivers named Johnson do not do well in New England as they are incapable of learning the play book. Go to SD and let the Pats find a speed receiver somewhere so that Brady can complete a pass over 25 yards.

  26. As a Stevie fan, I’ve gotta say, I think his best bet would be the Chargers. I think him going to NE compares mightily to the whole Ocho Cinco thing; a guy who likes to talk to build confidence (and it has worked for him), teaming with a coach who doesn’t allow for such a thing.

  27. metlifeteardown, a Jets fan talking trash about the Patriots is rather foolish.

Woody hoarded money for a couple of years so he could go on a spending spree this year. It backfired when the Patriots won the Super Bowl with the best Jets player in franchise history playing for the Patriots.

  28. The fall season in New England is spectacular. Spring is not far behind. Summer can get hot, but most of these guys can afford AC and a pool. The change of season is one reason that most people live here…not a boring constant 72%

  29. Don’t be stupid….if you want to win choose the Patriots. Chargers have been stuck in neutral for years.

    The knife cuts both ways.

What if Tyree doesn’t make the luckiest catch in NFL history? Or Asante Samuel makes a catch on what should’ve been an easy interception? We’re talking 5 time Super Bowl Champs.

Or what if Welker holds onto the ball? 6 time Super Bowl Champions.

Or what if the Patriots don’t blow a 21-3 lead or convert a first down to kill the clock in the 2006 AFC title game in Indy? 7 time Super Bowl champions. (No way the Bears we’re beating the AFC team that year).

The fact is the Patriots we’re good enough to get to 6 Super Bowls and 5 of the 6 could be changed by just a play or two.

You could make the argument that the Pats should be 1-5 in Super Bowls or you could make the case that they should be 6-0.

  31. Do you want a chance at a SB ring or do you want nice weather? It’s just that simple.

  32. Probably his last contract, family is pushing for the warm sunny beaches of San Diego

  33. when people say “the Seahawks gave the SB to the Patriots”….that is just not true. The Patriots had the lead, and the Seahawks needed to score to win.

You could say “the Seahawks gave their chance to win the SB to the Patriots”, but the Seahawks did not have the lead and the turnover resulted in no points, and the score stayed exactly the same.

The Seahawks needed to score to take the win away from the Patriots…..and they didn’t. It’s that simple folks.

  34. Afreed to terms…he’ll soon be a Charger!!! Welcome.

Time to join Keenan Allen, Malcom Floyd, Austin Pettis, Jacoby Jones and Dontrelle Inman.

  35. He chose the Chargers, and the hits just keep coming for the Patriots this off-season.

Yeah, and where I live in Northern San Diego, I’m 25 minutes away from mountain snow, desert camping or dirtbiking, protected forests, oh yeah, and a beach with year round 72 degree sunny weather.

Look, you guys got the 4 rings, but don’t dare try to take away the one thing that we clearly hold above the rest of the country.

  37. You could make the argument that the Pats should be 1-5 in Super Bowls or you could make the case that they should be 6-0.

Okay, so how do you spin them beating the 85 Bears?

FACT: Teams don’t pay players based on PAST performance, they pay them on potential/future performance. Vice versa, players don’t pick teams because they won X amount of Super Bowls in the past, they pick the team that’s gonna PAY THEM.

  38. I’m surprised the Chargers still want him after he turned down the Patriots. That’s basically saying, “I don’t care about winning.” And the Chargers shouldn’t want that on their team.

The reason the Patriots win is that they make sure everyone on their roster has winning as a priority.

  39. “Vice versa, players don’t pick teams because they won X amount of Super Bowls in the past, they pick the team that’s gonna PAY THEM.”

    —————————–

Wasn’t always like that. Players used to take less to remain with (or join) the Patriots. I’m going back to their 1st dynasty of course.
