Patriots sign former Saints running back Travaris Cadet

AP

The Patriots were in the market for running back Reggie Bush before he signed with the 49ers.

So now they’ve signed a poor man’s version.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, the Patriots have signed former Saints running back Travaris Cadet.

Cadet wasn’t tendered as a restricted free agent, as the Saints were looking to shed payroll.

The former Appalachian State quarterback/wide receiver isn’t the same kind of rushing threat Bush was (or has ever been), but he’s an effective enough pass-catcher out of the backfield.

He had 38 catches for the Saints last year, and that’s clearly something the Patriots look for out of their backs.

  1. The new Shane Vereen

However, those are some big shoes to fill. All I remember about him was a major whiff on a blitzing linebacker on MNF. Brees got splattered as a result. TB will not stand for that!

  2. As a Steelers fan, let me just say….another solid signing by a proactive franchise. Amazing that our player personnel will sit on their hands for hte next few months while teams like the Patriots make solid moves.

  3. logicalvoicesays, I think you made a slight typo in your user name. I believe it should be spelled ignorantpurposelesstrollvoicesays but I think it’s an easy mistake for someone to make.

  4. Cadet will not make the team. Has regressed in play for the last couple of years. Seems confused a lot. Not a good trait in the Patriot offense.

  5. Edelman made a pretty good conversion from small college QB. Maybe Cadet can do the same.

Robert Griffin the 3rd will be the greatest QB to ever live when it’s all said and done. The Washington Redskins are a first class organization who will win Super Bowl upon Super Bowl for taking initative to draft RGIII. If you don’t agree than you are either don’t know the sport of football or are a moron. Case closed.

Weak in this one, the troll is.

  8. Cadet joins 2nd year RB’s James White and Tyler Gaffney as candidates to replace Shane Vereen. Cadet also returns kickoffs.

  9. Don’t get too excited Patriots fans. Cadet is the definition of “just a guy”. He can do a lot of different things on offense, he just doesn’t do any of them particularly well. Pretty decent special teamer though.

Wouldn’t be a Pats post without ya, logical! Glad you could make it, what with it being a school night ‘n all.

  11. I just saw the lead. LOL

Calling Travaris Cadet the poor man’s Reggie Bush is like calling a Yugo the poor man’s Maserati.

  12. Belichick must really want those compensatory picks because most of the free agents he signs are guys that will not be offset against all the free agents he lost this year (Revis, Vareen, Browner, Wilfork, Ayers, Casillias). I think the only offset is Jabaal Sheard and maybe Chandler.

  13. Cadet had 38 receptions (on 51 targets; that’s a high completion rate) and 10 carries last year but he also fumbled twice. Vereen was a third down back that could run the ball. He not only caught the ball out of the backfield he split out wide and was a match-up headache. Vareen also was good on the blitz pick up. Cadet’s actually a little bigger than Vereen.

Guys, laugh all you want but Bill has a board for each position and a rating and value of each guy. If he signed Cadet he thinks he can play. He’s not often wrong.

  14. I was hoping for Pierre Thomas. Cadet never stood out much to me, and I’m sure they’re bringing him in just to compete in camp. I’d be surprised if he makes the team, but maybe he turns a corner and turns out to be a better fit here than in New Orleans

  15. “As a Steelers fan, let me just say….another solid signing by a proactive franchise. ”

Good to see someone is paying attention. Steelers fans tend to have a high football IQ. Cadet was a productive guy on an NFL roster last year in an offense that could score points. He isn’t just a camp body. He fits a role and probably can play special teams as well. No team has paid attention to special team play in free agency like Belichick has. Heck, he franchised his kicker.

  16. Anyone who says this guy is a Shane Vereen replacement is out of their mind. This guy wishes he could be Shane Vereen. What has he even done? In his best season, with a team that loves to throw the ball to RBs, he put up 328 yards from scrimmage. That’s gross.

  17. “I was hoping for Pierre Thomas.”

Thomas can not be split out wide and I doubt he plays much on special teams but I could be wrong. Cadet is definitely a quicker back. Cadet is 6′ 1″ and 210. He’ a big guy for someone with his quickness.

  18. Funny, it’s always a smart move if the move is by the Patriots…I’m a fan of N.O. and Cadet is mediocre at best, I’m glad he’s gone…

  19. i guess we should remind logical that the washingtonian fedskins woulda coulda shoulda drafted russel wilson, nick foles, even chandler jones or dont’a hightower that year! …but they did draft kirk cousins and josh leribeus. i guess belichick does not know the game of football and/or is a moron. not like those 1st-class fedskins who purportedly, at some point in the future, will win SB upon SB for merely taking the intitiative to draft RGIII.

  20. The Patriots are going to miss Shane Vereen. Cadet and Vereen are the same age, but their stats are not in any way comparable.

Unless I’m reading it wrong, Cadet has 37 yards rushing total for his career (?!?) and 45 receptions. Vereen has 907 yards rushing and 107 receptions.

It seems Cadet was mainly used by the Saints as a kick returner, but the Patriots already have Amendola doing that.

  21. “Funny, it’s always a smart move if the move is by the Patriots”

That’s a true statement if you put “almost” directly before always.

Kidding aside, it certainly isn’t a high risk signing, is it?

Don’t get too excited Patriots fans. Cadet is the definition of “just a guy”. He can do a lot of different things on offense, he just doesn’t do any of them particularly well. Pretty decent special teamer though.

Sounds exactly like the kind of guy the Patriots love.

  23. The player the PATS missed out on to replace Vereen was Helu.

Helu was half the price of Vereen and just as good if not better.

But bonehead BB just being too cheap and over-confident after their SB win.

  24. A knucklehead calls the greatest coach in the NFL a bonehead, go figure. With Belicheck it’s all about competition. Someone from free agency, the current roster or the draft will compete and earn the role just like the other roster spots. His process has been successful for a decade and a half, now is not the time to start doubting the best in the business.

  25. love the pats. trust bill belichick. not so sure on this one though. i do remember a game when he was on primetime when he seemed to thrive as a pass catching rb when he got a few reps in a row so he could get rhythm. didnt seem to be much of a blocker. i think gaffney has a better chance of being the guy if hes healthy. they should resign ridley imo now. ridley has stud rb potential when hes healthy. slasher like curtis martin was. ridley with blount and a decent 3rd down back (heck maybe bolden didnt he sign a 2 year deal?) and our backfield is set. i think this guy doesnt make the 53.

  26. sorry jonas not sure how i forgot to mention you above as a member of our RB mix, and a good one also. my bad.

  27. LOL

Remember when all these guys – Revis, Browner, Vereen, etc. – were going to take huge pay cuts to stay with the Cheaters?

I guess I wouldn’t want to take a pay cut either if I was pretty sure there were sanctions coming.

Exactly. I remember “just a guy” who was drafted in the 6th round and started out as the 4th string QB on the roster. He actually turned out to be pretty good – 4 rings and 3 SB MVPs later…

  29. I remember Cadet playing every position on the field when App nearly beat ECU. He’s a great athlete, he’ll fit in perfectly with what BB does on offense. Good luck TC!

    Go Panthers

  30. Bonehead : n, Coach who has averaged over 12 wins per season and appeared in 6 Super Bowls since 2001.

  31. Pats fans are like kids in the store griping over getting malt o meal. ” there is perfectly good cereal on the shelf ! ” When it comes to free agency this off season.

    Troll alert. Ignore.

  33. With all the RBs we’ve had get injured at some point, Cadet still couldn’t get decent playing time. He’s not that good. Awful blocker, good pass catcher, good special teamer, mediocre runner……

I was hoping for that one. I think Helu would have been an upgrade over Vereen. I’m not sure what the negative is.

    —–

Probably not. He’s probably on vet minimum, not gauranteed, so if he doesn’t make it, there’s nothing lost. He made the Saints team enough that there’s obviously soemthing to him, even if it’s just depth. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him be special teams/3rd down back (depending on blocking ability). BB loves his special teams versatility.
