No resolution of pending investigations before league meetings

Getty Images

With four important investigations pending for the NFL, some thought that the league would bury the outcome of each one during the late Friday afternoon hours of the second full day of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.  But that would have set the stage for plenty of on-the-record and off-the-record reaction (and possibly criticism) from owners, General Managers, coaches, and other executives at the upcoming league meetings in Arizona, where plenty of media will be swarming for information.

So nothing has been decided yet, and the cases of the Jets allegedly tampering, the Browns allegedly sending text messages to the sideline during games, the Falcons allegedly pumping in fake crowd noise over the span of two seasons, and the Patriots allegedly tampering with air pressure inside footballs during the AFC title game remain unresolved.

Actually, “allegedly” applies only to the Patriots.   Jets owner Woody Johnson committed a clear violation of the tampering policy as it relates to Darrelle Revis, the Browns have admitted that G.M. Ray Farmer sent in-game texts to the coaching staff, and the Falcons have acknowledged that artificial crowd noise was used.

Since the punishments most likely will include the removal and/or reconfiguration of draft picks, decisions must be made and announced before April 30, the first night of the 2015 draft.  But those decisions apparently aren’t coming before the annual league meetings begin.  Don’t expect them to come before the meetings end, either.

Quite possibly, a press release will be issued on Wednesday, just as everyone is heading to the airport in Phoenix.  Just as possibly, all four situations could be addressed at once, diluting the ability of the media to focus excessively on any one specific case or conclusion.

  1. As you said, in three cases, guilt is already admitted or clear as day, so the only thing to be decided is the punishment. I have no idea why it is taking so long.

  2. The worst case scenario for the Jets is the league fines them for Woody Johnson speaking about Darrelle Revis while he was under contract with the Patriots. There will be no draft picks awarded to the Patriots or swapping of draft picks either. If YOU are delusional enough to believe that, then you’re probably delusional enough to believe Darrelle Revis’ managers needs Manish Mehta to know the Jets, who’s BIGGEST NEED this off-season was secondary help, would possibly be interested in reacquiring one of the best CB’s in the game. BOOK IT.

  3. I’m telling you, the Patriots aren’t getting out of DEFLATE-GATE without serious penalties. You’ll see when the Ted Wells report comes out.

  4. “I’m telling you, the Patriots aren’t getting out of DEFLATE-GATE without serious penalties.”

As much as you Pats haters are dreaming that they’ll be heavily penalized its just that, fantasy land.

The NFL rules consider ball tampering so tiny an infraction that the penalty is stated as $25,000, that’s it.

And since the Colts deflated the one ball that was significantly under pressure they’ll be the ones getting hit, not the Pats.

  5. Jets will lose a late draft pick. Pats will get a fine again. Falcon will get a fine and loss of a late pick and the brown will be told they have to start Johnny football as there punishment. Looks like the Browns are in the most trouble with the league

  6. When one team in the league, gets caught cheating (no reasonable person believes someone just happens to get caught the only time they did something wrong), then media, fans, average citizens continuing to believe they have been, are, and always will be cheaters, that is not hating.
    It’s reality.
    *super bowl winners.

  7. The reporter who nail the terms of Revis’s contract should get a Pulitzer Prize or the Scientist should examine him for his Super exceptional ESP powers. I wonder how this ESP genius have not been winning all those fat Powerball jackpots.

Oh wait, the Jets told him beforehand that was the agreed upon contract. That would explain why super-ESP reporter fail to win a any super lottery. I agree with goingtheextramile…. No Jets draft picks should go to the Patriots. It should be the Patriots who should surrender the next five first round picks to the Jets, then again, it ,would be wasted. Look who they drafted, Mr. Butt Fumble himself and Geno Smith.

Um, before you get yourself convinced, you better look up what the penalty was for tampering with Lance Briggs a few years ago. Here’s a hint though. The teams swapped draft picks in a high round and the offending team lost its draft pick in a lower round. And they didn’t even sign the player! Sounds like it could be worse for the Jets.

  9. Colts fans should start getting ready for a lot of bad news. If you come at the king you better not miss… And you missed badly. Trying to frame the Pats was a bad move not only will you loose drafts picks but the respect of everyone ,football fan or not. I hope you had your fun , told your jokes , got a kick out of SNL skits , read your kravits and Doyel story’s and enjoyed being up on your high horse because it’s all coming crashing down very soon.

  10. Anyone out there thinks Goodell is going to come down hard on those teams? Anyone… Bueller? Bueller?

    Didn’t think so…

  11. If the Jets walk on tampering, then Belichick can begin ” The Dez Bryant Chronicles” , whereas each week he can reiterate his intention to sign the 2016 free agent while still under contract with the Cowboys.

For those of you who believe the Patriots were culpable in “frame – gate, there’s good news. A little cottontail bunny will soon be coming to your house with a wicker basket full of chocolate eggs, laid by the marshmallow peeps.
    .

  12. “And since the Colts deflated the one ball that was significantly under pressure they’ll be the ones getting hit, not the Pats.”

    Link?

  13. And just remember pats fans there was a pats personal caught on video taking the footballs into a bathroom they should be guilty already

  14. The Lance Briggs comparison needs to stop for the estimated Revis pick. It doesn’t hold water with other comparisons. First off, there have been more recent tampering charges with less severe penalties and secondly the level of tampering was different. The 49ers straight up contacted Briggs and his agent. Did the Jets do that with Revis, I’m sure, but the basis of the charge was just Johnson saying, I’d like to have Revis on my team. That’s not much of a stretch.

With that said, I love how the tampering charge shows the clear hypocrisy in both fan bases.

With Deflategate Jets fans are calling for severe penalties by saying a rule is a rule and the Patriots clearly violated a rule. Meanwhile Patriots fans respond by saying its a minor rule that everyone breaks.

With the tampering charges the Patriots fans are calling for severe penalties by saying a rule is a rule and the Jets clearly violated a rule. Meanwhile Jets fans respond by saying its a minor rule that everyone breaks.

  15. I agree that they will probably release all the findings at the same time. All the focus will be on the delategate finding and the others will slip through unnoticed. That way everyone can go on pretending that no other team cheats.

  16. How about Greg Hardy? When is that decision coming down? They REQUESTED the info last Wednesday….LAST WEDNESDAY.

Geez….swift is not a term this league understands.

  17. NFL (NYC) & OBAMA = Corruption & Evil

Dr. Evil Go2hell wants to keep the Patriots outcome tied with the guilty parties so as to make the Patriots look guilty just from association with the Falcons, Jets, Browns.

Wake up people – NFL & WashDC is at war with the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the True Patriots and the only football team that represents how we achieved our FREEDOM.

  18. Who cares? When do the Camps open?

Of course, the heads of the Jets media butt boys (read: Manish Mehta) will explode when they get punished for tampering.

    Pass the popcorn, please…

  19. No sambaugyh, the Pats did not ‘clearly violate a rule’. Also, I haven’t seen any Pats fans saying ‘it’s a minor rule that everyone breaks’. The Pats position all along has been that they didn’t tamper with any FBs, and that any deflation that happened was an act of nature. They then documented scientific proof that it was feasible. Unless Wells can show the Pats tampered with the FBs, and they’re not going to be able to because it didn’t happen, nothing is gonna come of it.

As for the tampering: As Florio just said, it’s clear and blatant violation of the rules. Whether people think it helped Revis’ position or not. It’s not gonna be a high pick, but the Jets will be sanctioned in the draft for this. That will be the tough part, because they’re already short a 5th and 6th.

  20. Re Jets and Revis tampering what everyone fails to remember is that Johnson was answering a question that was asked by a reporter. This mitigates the infraction in my opinion. Was it a stupid to answer the way he did, sure. But I think this fact will mitigate any penalty the Jets are given.

  21. goingthextramile says:

I’m telling you, the Patriots aren’t getting out of DEFLATE-GATE without serious penalties. You’ll see when the Ted Wells report comes out….

We all agree that there will be heavy penalties. The Colts will lose at least this year’s 1st round pick for their attempts to frame the Patriots while working hand-in-hand with Mike Kensil. As a result, Mike Kensil will be fired from his position with the league and Ryan Grigson will be fired from the Colts. Chuck Pagano will be suspended for at least this the season (the “loss” of Grigson and Pagano will probably help the Colts). For some reason NFL owners will allow Goodell to resign instead of just firing him

Again, we agree, those are heavy penalties.

  22. It mitigates the infraction because he was talking to a reporter? How else would anybody find out about it? Because he talked in his sleep? That’s what press secretaries are there for.

    —————————————-
It doesn’t matter if it’s the answer to a question, they are told they can’t tamper. They know they are supposed to answer “I can’t talk about a player under contract with another team.”

The best defense the Jets may have is to try to portray Woody Johnson as a dottering old fool that didn’t know what he was saying. They could use drafting Butt-Fumble, Geno, and whichever crappy QB they draft this year as proof.

  24. Nothing is more tedious than a poster predicting the resolution of an NFL investigation and then saying “Book It”.

Of minor interest are the facts and what the NFL actual does because that impacts teams and reveals the league’s machinations and biases.

For a society that purports to care about liberty above all else we seem to love to see rules and penalties imposed on others in any arbitrary way as long has it advantages us or “our team”. Of course, “our team” deserves exoneration.

  25. Jets fans must be seriously worried! You can see by the thumbs up and thumbs down and the related comments that it is overwhelmingly Jet fans—The only solace they have is that The entire front office of the NFL is ex Jet Employees.

  26. Still trying to find a way to sweep the extent of the Patriots’ dirty deeds under the rug? Can’t destroy the tapes this time.

  27. What about the Vikings and Panthers putting footballs In front of propane heaters on the sidelines? No outrage/ investigations no? Any one calling the Pats Cheaters and not them are just bitter hypocritical clowns that are sick of seeing the Patriots beat there favorite team. LAME.

    Everything is not a conspiracy.

  30. What kind of investigator is this?

UH ,the Jets tampered through the Media. The Falcons already apologized. The Browns management were ignorant of the rules, but were not calling to help. These 3 “investigations” should have been resolved immediately.

  31. I am still trying to figure out how a rule that was instituted in the off season after 2006 about no more filming from the sidelines means the Superbowls that Pats won in 2001, 2003 and 2004 are tainted by that rule..
That is why we call people that say that “haters”.. because, quite frankly, they are.

  32. 3 teams get caught cheating and no one cares.

1 team gets *accused* of cheating and it makes national headlines (on network news, not just ESPN) and the entire country loses its mind.

    Yeah that’s fair.

  33. If there’s not going to be a penalty for tampering with a player under contract, then why have a rule against it in the first place?

And, if the penalty is so weak that teams ignore it anyway, then what’s the point?

If the NFL believes in this rule, then they need to open up with the 16″ guns: Jets / Patriots swap 2nd round picks.

  34. Jets charge not slam dunk. No evidence beyond statement to media. Prior sustained charges relating to statements to media also included contact of agent and/or player by team charged.

Once again you’ve jumped the gun.

Pats charge? We also have not seen all the evidence. Where were each set of footballs inflated? When? Where maintained before and during game? What were temps in all locations? Especially at time inflated? What was the manner of checking psi? Informally by hand, or gauge? I’m sure there are even more Qs.

Won’t be surprised if neither charge sustained.

  35. I can’t help but laugh at reading some of these comments by Patriot Haters.

The jealousy they show is off the chart!

When you have successful teams like the Patriots, 49ers, Dallas, Montreal Canadiens, etc., you are always going to be called a CHEATER or whatever because of the success that they’ve had.

Personally, I don’t think NE is going to be fined, or have coaches/players suspended…This is nothing but a witch hunt!

BTW, what about the NFL employee stealing game balls meant for Charities and selling them on the side…(Stealing and getting caught during the game trying to replace said stolen ball from another ball bag?)

  36. I have no idea how proud successful men like NFL owners would allow themselves to be clowned on a daily basis and be the brunt of every bad joke like they are now.

Obviously they saw something in Roger Goodell when he worked for the league as a lawyer that made them think he would be a good commissioner.

But he’s not and the NFL owners are compounding their error by refusing to fix it.

  37. “1 team gets *accused* of cheating and it makes national headlines (on network news, not just ESPN) and the entire country loses its mind.”

    Excellent post.

I think Fox calls that “fair and balanced”.

  38. The league is in negotiation with the cheating Patriots. The only reason action has not been taken yet, is because the league is waiting on Kraft to approve the sanctions.

You see the commish is Krafts lap dog.
Kraft will have to agree to the punishment before the punishment is dealt out.

  39. @r302112

That may be the most ridiculous comment I have ever read…

It looks more like the Colts, and Jests, and possibly the Ravens should be REALLY worrying about these “Investigations.”

    @lukedunphy:

That is one of the best posts I’ve ever read on here…Thanks.
    ========================================
How can it be a good post when it is factually wrong?

Roger Goodell is not a lawyer and never even went to law school. He was a well connected grad out with an Economics degree from Washington & Jefferson whose father was a US Senator. His original position with the NFL was created after he initiated a letter writing campaign to Pete Rozelle and the 28 team owners. I’m sure it didn’t hurt that his dad was well connected. He has NO expertise in law or running a major business. His selection as CEO of the NFL is puzzling at best. It often seems like he is just plain over his head. This doesn’t make him a bad guy or an enemy, just not a person who should be running the NFL.

  41. Man what criminals those Jets are– Their owner actually made an off-hand nice comment about one of his former players.

Oh boy what a crooked organization the Browns are– their GM texted to one of his coaches during a game!

Meanwhile the Patriots continually break rules and cheat in all sorts of way, but just keep getting a free pass year after year after year.

  42. All 4 scenarios are bad, but at least 3 teams have done the right thing and admitted their transgretions. The 4th, the Patriots, chose to compliment thier cheating with lies after being cought red handed. That is deserving of the harshest of penalties available! Given it’s Belicheat’s second offense…he should be banned from the NFL for life. And Brady, as the obvious ring-leader to deflate-gate should be suspended for a full year.

  43. So a violation (if there even was a violation) which, by rule, is generally finable for $25,000, is worthy of a lifetime ban and year-long suspension? Got it. Next?

  44. 11 of 12 = NATURE/SCIENCE/PHYSICS

    1 of 12 (2psi under) = Kinsel & Colts r GUILTY

    $1,000 an hour = Ted Well$

Rodger Goodell = Bungling Jets lover idiot getting paid $44 mil a year.

NE PATRIOTS = Hated by most because they beat your team every year AND won 4 Super Bowls with same Coach QB in a little over ten years.

  45. I’m getting the feeling from these posts that the only thing that will make us feel better about losing a bunch of starters is the Jets getting punished. Doesn’t make me feel any better. I’m more upset with our lack of spending than I am at NYJ. None of this crap will make our D better next year, especially not a late pick. We don’t dare attack BB or BK, so lets blame Woody.

  46. people are getting so worked up over the jets swapping a 5th rounder (most probable punishment). Why? Woody didnt keep his mouth shut oh well.
The most interesting to me is the dolphins. They could be in some serious. Trouble.

  47. The owners in NFL are NOT getting clowned by Roger Goodell.

They are getting clowned by Robert Kraft who RUNS Roger Goodell.

  49. Once again I doubt any fan is surprised by this. Göd-del philosophy is wait them out. Controversy during a playoff game does not point well towards the NFL. The NFL has a lot ot answer but they will push it aside as long as they are making the money they are.

  50. What a wonderful day it is today!

Spring has arrived, and the New England Patriots with – why, I see FOUR shiny Lombardis~! are World Champions. WOW!

Don’t worry Patriot haters, your team will get their chance to take down the champs in a few months, as feeble as that effort will ultimately be. 🙂

In the meantime, may the gloating and rubbing it in continue. I plan on it, and you will like it! 🙂

  51. Do you think all teams not named the Patriots should just fold?

I think so. Clearly they’ve proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they just can’t hang with the big dogs of the NFL. As a supremely intelligent football fan I’m insulted that these puny little things otherwise know as the 31 other teams can’t even give the Patriots any competition.

Enough is enough. Time to fold the 31 other teams and give 31 new teams a shot.

    Discuss.

    ———————————————————–
What? The Lance Briggs case does matter. It sets a floor and precedent with the same commisioner for the Jets penalty. The 49ers had to flip picks with the Bears in the 3rd round (7th pick in round for 12th) and forfeit a 5th rounder to the league – all for a player they tampered with but did not eventually sign.

The Jets actually signed the player – in the division mind you meaning damage done to Patriots is further magnified as they have to play Revis 2x per season now.

Also what other tampering cases are you referring to that are more recent and a team was/was not penalized? Were any of those cases ones where the player tampered with was very good-excellent like Revis and was signed away within the division? Were any of those cases where the team investigated actually tampered on camera months in advance and then proceeded to sign said player on first day of free agency? Those would be interesting cases to also study for precedent.

Don’t be surprised when it’s revealed that the basis of the charge was based on a lot evidence more than Woody’s Johnson’s comments.

If some off the cuff remarks were all there was to it then I doubt the Patriots would have gone ahead with charges. The fact they did is very telling. You’ll see….

  56. I expect the Wells report to suggest a Standard Operating Procedure for the measurement of football inflation pressure. This will have to include a room temperature range at which the footballs will be filled and tested for compliance.

Since the target pressure range is so narrow, 13.0 PSI plus or minus .5 PSI, the Wells report will have to specify the brand and model of the pressure gauges used as well as a strict calibration schedule to eliminate accuracy variations from gauge to gauge.

All this of course because, you know, football pressure is of such extreme importance.

  57. As a fan of the World Champion Patriots I CAN’T WAIT to see the Wells report!

I think this is going to blow the doors off a lot of things the league wishes we didn’t know. Like the shady official trying to sell game balls. Like how one senior league executive with a documented anti-Patriot bias conducted a rogue sting operation in cahoots with two other organizations, violate numerous NFL rules doing so, and risk the integrity of the AFC Championship game by ensuring the footballs were good at halftime not before the game like it should have been done. Like how one organization plotted with their buddies at another to frame another NFL team. And who knows what else is out there!

I for one think it’s going to be one of the most fascinating sports stories in recent memory. Gonna be a treat to read! 🙂

  58. Meanwhile the Patriots continually break rules and cheat
