Several first-rounders among the chaff at veteran combine

AP

The curiosity surrounding Michael Sam is the obvious story here at the NFL’s veteran combine in Phoenix, but there are some other “names” on hand.

Specifically, the 2007 NFL Draft has a significant presence here.

Among the odd collection of guys looking for closure here are three members of the first round of that year’s selection meeting.

Former Falcons defensive end Jamaal Anderson (the eighth overall pick that year) is on hand, along with former Rams defensive tackle Adam Carriker (No. 13).

Anderson had 7.5 sacks in six NFL seasons, and hasn’t turned up since the Bears cut him at the end of training camp in 2013.

Carriker had a decent career before a knee injury ended it, but he’s still the cat the Rams took one spot before the Jets chose some guy named Darrelle Revis.

Another late addition to today’s list was quarterback Brady Quinn, who was chosen 22nd that year by the Browns (man, they never miss on quarterbacks, how did that happen?).

Quinn turned up with the Dolphins last year, after stints with the Broncos, Chiefs, Seahawks, Jets and Rams.

While the NFL has effectively seen everything these guys have to offer, today gives them one more (last) chance. While the usefulness of this process is debatable, for guys like Carriker who have ostensibly had a chance to rehab old injuries, it’s at least a chance to prove themselves well.

  1. It gives the NFL Fan, the NFL Network, the NFL outcast and the NFL desperate team something to do pending the draft…….good filler, if nothing else.

  2. It is time for the NFL to partner with the CFL and expand the CFL into medium-sized cities in the U.S.

  3. If NFL teams spend too much time with these players rather than studying for the upcoming draft, there will be more first round mistakes that end up coming to this combine in future years.

  4. @Rindell: They tried that years ago and, despite a Grey Cup winner coming from a U.S.-based city, it was a failed experiment and didn’t last long. The Canadian game, though interesting, is very different. If you approach it expecting it to be like the NFL, you are going to miss the point and conclude that it is weird. And weird it may be, but it has been around in one form or another since the late 1800’s.

Hope the Steelers have plenty of scouts there. They certainly need the help

why would they need help? They won their division last year and 2 super bowls in the last 10 years. Are you living under a rock?

  7. Michael Sam’s workout at last year’s Combine was a disaster. He was slow, weak, and unexplosive. His hopes were based on a team signing him based on his Mizzou game tapes. The Rams and Cowboys took a look and decided to pass. Michael Sam running a 5.1 forty, having a 24 inch vertical jump and benching 225 seventeen times won’t sway anyone to sign him. What’s that definition of insanity?…doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result!?!

This time though, he now has dancing experience!

  9. How about Eugene Chung ? Andy Katsamoyer? Couple of first round gems. Pats fans remember that mess? Thank god Bellicheck stiff armed the jets and came hear. Those years sucked!

  10. they need to have a commissioner’s combine because Goodell is a joke of a commissioner. Here are some things goodell royally screwed :

    1. no football in la. this has been beaten to death but he has the power to do it and refuses.

    2. not letting players standout. No celebrations? can’t even support a good cause like mental awareness? smh

    3. he creates random penalties once the public deems the transgressions of an individual to be too serious. ie: ray rice.

    4. cte and concussions. Srsly, get ahead of the bell curve, goodell. You’re ruining the lives of players.

    5. He makes more money per year than any NFL player. lets think about this. Its not the players going over the middle of the field on a slant. Its not a player whose running full steam down the field on a kick off. Its not even the quarterback who leads his team to a super bowl win. Its the damn COMMISSIONER who makes the most money in the nfl. LMAO

    6. The NFL is still considered a non profit entity by the government. LMAO

  11. Who would win if a team made up of this rabble played the jets? I’m really not sure to be honest. The Jets would have the worse QB, that’s for sure.

  12. With the evolution of the NFL into a faster and more fast-paced league it is looking more and more like the CFL. The solution is to use the CFL as a farm system for the NFL to develop skill positions that will benefit from the wider field and greater passing frequency. Do that, and there will be fewer busts.

  13. If nothing else this will give these guys closure. Brady Quinn IMO could be useful in the right situation as a 3rd stringer.

  14. Good luck to all these guys. We rarely get to see the stories of the men who get knocked down and keep getting back up. I hope they realize how lucky they are to continue to pursue their dream.

  15. Sam’s situation is similar to Tebow’s….

    No one wants a circus following a 3rd stringer….

We all can admit Tebow would have a #3 position at QB somewhere if not for the circus….. He would be playing special teams and be the emergency QB at the league minimum …… But his circus wasn’t his idea

Sam’s on the other hand chose to have a circus, thinking it would help his draft status….. If not for the circus he to would be at minimum on a practice squad somewhere.

  16. Michael Sam is a joke!!! Why even mention that clown when there are former 1st round picks there? He barely even got picked in the NFL draft and failed to even make a practice squad. He sucks

  17. I’m no Bible thumper but I’d like to see Tebow succeed. Mainly because the NFL could use more guys with his character, especially after what it went through last year.

  18. Most of these guys are out of the league for other reasons besides talent. Alcohol, drugs and other bad Behaivor meaning a team really has to do their homework.

  19. I’m not a Vince Young fan, but I read that he got denied an invite to this thing? How does a guy who won rookie of the year and led his team to the playoffs not at least get a look? Isn’t that the whole point?

  20. Michael Sam is a joke!!! Why even mention that clown when there are former 1st round picks there? He barely even got picked in the NFL draft and failed to even make a practice squad. He sucks

Why are you so angry? What do you care if Sam is in the NFL or not?

  21. The veteran combine is just the NFL’s version of the Gong Show or American Idol’s audition shows. Roll out some stiffs that don’t have what it takes, get their hopes up, and then crush their dreams with a soul rending finality.

  22. The only reason Quinn was a first-rounder is because there are still way too many people in this country who are blindly obsessed with Notre Dame. Yet, oddly enough, the majority of players that come out of that program are nothing more than professional flops.

  23. The NFL scouts have become so good a picking out talent (except the Browns) that players that have lost the least bit of speed are soon gone, enough College players are drafted every few years to turn over the NFL
