Saints hosting edge rusher Anthony Spencer on free-agent visit

Free agent pass rusher Anthony Spencer had two of his best seasons under defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in Dallas from 2011-2012, registering 17 sacks and making his lone Pro Bowl appearance.

Spencer hasn’t been the same since, but that’s not because Ryan left town. Spencer wrecked his knee in 2013 and required microfracture surgery. He’s recorded just half of a sack across 14 games the past two seasons.

Now 31 years old, Spencer is looking for a potential new home with the Cowboys showing little interest in re-signing him. Spencer is visiting Ryan and the Saints on Tuesday, according to Saints sideline reporter Kristian Garic.

Spencer can no longer be counted on to start, but he’d provide a veteran edge presence behind starters Junior Galette and Cameron Jordan. New Orleans finished 25th in the NFL with just 34 sacks last season.

  1. Since speculation is part of the job description, the opportunity to point out that Dallas DOES want him back, but at their price, could have put some perspective on Murray and led to a story about their new found financial discipline. Instead, we get the lazy and predictable- “Now 31 years old, Spencer is looking for a potential new home with the Cowboys showing little interest in re-signing him.”

8m is too much for a RB with the glut at talent at the position.
13m is just fine for a double digit sack rusher, especially when it comes with no financial risk.

  2. Well it wont take much to rise to the top of that division!! But Saint fans should be a little worried, they could not win such a bad div last year!!

  3. Felt bad for him with that injury b/c he was balling when he played across from D.Ware. Last year, once he eventually got onto the field, you could tell he wasn’t his old self. He got better as the year went on against the run but I don’t recall him ever being near the QB.

  4. Here is what I have to say about this bag bull crap. Go look at the Saints roster their super bowl year. Do you know how many haters said the same thing then. Maybe we have another bad season, maybe we don’t. Here is what you should look at. How many players were “washed up” or coming off of injuries form other teams that the Saints gained from. Brees, Vilma,Sharper,Shockey just to mention a few. Will these guys work out, maybe maybe not but I bet one of them will be a big impact!

  5. Correction: Spencer also had a sack in the playoffs last year. Last I checked, playoff games still count.

Spencer certainly wasn’t at the same level he was in his last fully healthy season (when he was one of the best edge defenders in the NFL), but he actually was largely back to his usual form later in the season. And anybody who knows anything about Spencer understand that he can make quite an impact without grabbing the stat-sheet sacks. Still an effective player!
