49ers cut Jonathan Martin

Jonathan Martin, the offensive lineman best known for leaving the Dolphins after he was bullied by teammate Richie Incognito, has been released by the 49ers.

The 49ers announced the move today. Martin will be placed on waivers, which means all 31 other teams have the right to put in a claim for him. If he does not get claimed, he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

San Francisco gave up this year’s seventh-round draft pick to acquire Martin last year. He started nine games for the 49ers last season and had a strong supporter in former 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh, who also coached Martin at Stanford. Now that Harbaugh is gone, it’s no surprise that Martin is gone, too.

The Dolphins took Martin in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft. He started his first 23 games in Miami before leaving the team in his second season.

  1. So, can this guy actually play but is such a problem in the locker room that no one wants to keep him around? Or is he just not very good?

  2. “Please god let the Buffalo Bills sign him to line up back up next to Richie Incognito.”

  3. Hope he has fun in retirement. He is weak minded fool that can not deal with adult issues as an adult and has to run home to mommy and daddy. Who wants that kind of person on their team? No one will claim him unless they are desperate.

  4. Oh, thank God. He was one of the worst lineman I’ve ever seen, and I was embarrassed we picked him up. Plus, I have no sympathy for someone who takes his ball and goes home, because people are picking on him when it was his fault to begin with.

  5. I’m kind of disgusted by the posts that are happy for the jerk Incognito and happy Martin lost his job. I guess yall have never been bullied before and don’t know what it feels like to feel worthless and feel like a joke and can’t control it.

But I guess I shouldn’t expect anything more of PFT commenters.

  6. He played as well as a seventh round pick. Major liability in pass protection, part of the reason why Vernon had down year was the inability of the right side of the offensive line to do ananything. Not a distraction at all though, believe he’s playing the wrong sport though, excellent footwork of a matador…..

  7. Went crying home to mama after staging a contrived walkout and overnight psych stay. Crappy player, worse person. Good players facing adversity end up on their feet; he won’t!

  8. he is going to file a bullying grievance against the 49ers front office. Watch it happen. Can’t imagine any players liked having this bitch in the locker room. Harbaugh was the only thing keeping him employed.

  9. If this is it for him in the league, he goes down as one of the biggest 2nd-round busts in history. I remember some draftniks saying he was the most “pro ready” prospect of all the OTs in the draft that year.

  10. That Martin is scorned and Incognito is hailed as some sort of redemption story is everything that’s wrong with this country. Bully mentality sucks.

It would be funny if Buffalo signed him

    _______

I get where you’re going w/ with that, but honestly it would be funny if any team signed him.

I hope you enjoyed your NFL career JMart 😉

  12. Martin should have said he was gay. The gays in San Fran would rise up and force the 49ers to keep him, maybe he’d get a raise out of it.

  13. I would have loved to see Hard Knocks with Dockett and Martin mixing it up….if Martin thought Incognito had a mouth he hasn’t spend 15 seconds with Dockett. That would have been TV GOLD!

  14. It’s laughable that any commenter would suggest that, while he may not be a great football player, Martin is anything less that a great athlete. 99 out of 100 of us would be bedridden by any one of the multitude of injuries these men incur, and to suggest he isn’t “tough enough” is pathetic.

I doubt any of you would make these assertions in his presence.

  15. Someday, you whiny Jonathan Martin sympathizers will remember to be informed before speaking, and take the time out of your schedule to read the text messages between Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito where it clearly showed that Jonathan Martin was most definitely a participant in the bullying as well.

They all bullied each other. They were all just a bunch of dumb douchey meatheads, but when the jokes about his play, or lack thereof, became the focus, he cracked and ran back under his mother’s attorney skirt.

So yeah, I’ll keep crying blood tears for you cry-baby cradlers stroking Jonathan Martin’s well-threaded eyebrows while he slowly slips into a sweet sleep.

    Lames.

  16. I forgot who he was and wondered why he was newsworthy. Then I was reminded about the prior situation when he played for the dolphins and quit because a guy was bullying him or whatever.

  17. To the 1st poster, he can’t play whatsoever – when Anthony Davis came back and got hurt 49er faithful knew they would have to see Martin keep getting destroyed be DE/OLB’s in the running and passing game.

  18. He’s gone, no surprise. HORRIBLE starter, he’s gone no doubt because the only reason why he was still in the league was because Harbaugh was his coach at Stanford. He’s toast. Him and his scumbag attorney parents who tried to defame Incognito.

  19. Martin was pretty bad and only stayed on the roster because he was a Harbaugh guy. It’s kind of a thing with Harbaugh and bad players.

  20. He can’t follow Harbaugh back to college, can he? Can he take a couple grad school classes at U of M? The pay in the NCAA will be significantly lower though.

  21. Martin was never good in pass coverage from what I can recall so for once the GM is doing something right. Also, he kind of deserves it for falsely accusing Incognito of bullying. Richie is a dick but the way he was dragged through the media thanks to this guy’s crap was ridiculous.

  22. He has Started 32 games through 3 seasons & is still very young. There will be suitors (plural). But…and obviously, the stigma of being the ‘bullied offensive lineman’ guy will never be lived down, since that title goes against the whole purpose of his job.

    They all bullied each other.

It could’ve been a coping mechanism of Martin to play along and act like he didn’t care. Things aren’t always as simple as you made them out to be. But of course, none of us really know for sure #speculation

  24. He’s just not a very good tackle. His lack of strength is his biggest problem, he constantly gets pushed around.

He’ll find a spot as a swing tackle somewhere

Thank you. It is quite clear that the anti-bully people on here sticking up for Martin never took the time to read the transcripts of the text messages. Martin gave as good as he got. So to all of you defending Martin, take the time to read the transcripts, then you can comment with some credibility.

  26. Cowboy Fans: You don’t think that idiot Jerry Jones would sign this guy, do you?

    Jerry Jones: Martin’s available? Hmmm.

  27. If you saw any 49er games with this guy playing, it will be hard for him to find employment. Many teams will rather go with a stronger, younger OL in the draft.

  28. @KCChefs58
“It could’ve been a coping mechanism of Martin to play along and act like he didn’t care. Things aren’t always as simple as you made them out to be. But of course, none of us really know for sure #speculation”

In other words….. Martin pretended to be Incognitos friend, then betrayed him.

  29. Didn’t realize how many pseudo tough guys are on here – most of whom need to get back to flipping burgers and complaining that their boss yells at them too much.

  30. Upon hearing the news he threw down his lunch tray, got in his car and cried all the way to the mental hospital where he promptly called his mom

  31. There it is 49er fans your curse is lifted. Now that that rat is off of your team maybe your ship will stop taking on water. BTW all you clowns that feel bad for him stop embarrassing your selfs. He is a grown man playing football in the NFL not a child.

  32. The only reason why this guy started so many games in ’14 was it took Davis way too long to come back from off season surgery.
The line was never 100 percent healthy and in sync, which hurt Kap’s performance.
Martin never played well in SF. So no surprise he’s now cut.
A full season from a healthy Davis should help a lot at right tackle.
Acquiring Martin might be another example of what seems to be a troubling trend with Baalke. He’s been too reactionary, grasping at straws the last few years with guys who seem to have next to no upside. Last year it was Martin and Gabbert.
You knew Martin brought plenty of baggage with him, and his play on the field was spotty to say the least. Why would you want this guy on your team when there’s so much potential for a bad result with issues like team chemistry?
Next, Baalke said he has to respond to the Jimmy Graham trade.
    Why?
Use your own strategy and stick to it. Don’t worry about what other people are doing. If you are always reacting, you are not moving forward.
Martin will be out of the league in a year or two, if not sooner. He was a waste of time and draft pick for the 49ers, who could have spent their resources better by trying to develop more deserving players who actually have a future.

  33. “So, can this guy actually play but is such a problem in the locker room that no one wants to keep him around? Or is he just not very good?”

    He’s average.

  34. @irkjames

That comment was dead on. The bottom line is Martin sucks as a player and whether Incognito is a meathead or not, he can play. Martin contrived the whole thing when both sides were at fault which negates Bullying. Martin was losing his starting job and how convenient to “speak out” at that time. Read the Wells Report and get the facts instead of spewing off facts you do not know. I hope Martin never works again and his quick to litigate parents can now foot all his bills. The irony here is that the Dolphins and 49ers knew what Jeff Ireland didn’t. 2 teams wasted picks and money on this clown.

  35. “I guess yall have never been bullied before and don’t know what it feels like to feel worthless and feel like a joke and can’t control it.”

I think it’s more that many don’t buy that it was “bullying” – seemed alot like typical off-color bro talk. Not everyone has been in that kind of environment.

  36. Gotta love the tough guy trolls flexing their muscles behind a keyboard. Martin would crush them with one hand.

  37. I’m sure the Dolphins would take him back in a heartbeat. They must have healed from the knife he put in their back by now.

  38. A lot of comments say that Martin basically stinks as a football player. Well according to the NFL he has earned just over 3 million bucks in his 3 years. If he was smart he invested it and can now get on with his real life’s work and he has made more and done more in 3 years that most of you dopes will do in your whole benchwarmer lives. How’s that?

  39. I can see Martin going to the following teams:

    1. Browns, because they’re the Browns
    2. Bills, so he can play next to Incognito
    3. Jets, so he can block for a running back (since who is the QB?)
    4. Pats, so he can screw them up and piss off Brady (but unfortunately, BB isn’t that stupid)
    5. Any opponent of the Dolphins this year, so Wake and Suh can annihilate his wussy rear end….

  40. He was cut because Harbaugh is no longer the HC. He will be signed within the week and by a team with strong moral fiber, which excludes many teams.

  41. All thee tough guys commenting about a player calling him soft. I would pay good money to see you keyboard warriors talk this way in his presence.

  42. The Wells investigation found that extensive bullying did occur. The reality is that Incognito is probably a sociopath and J-Mart didn’t know how to deal with him.
Jonathan needs to show a lot more skill than he has so far shown us or his NFL career is in tatters. Good luck J-Mart. Some of us understand the hell that you went through.

  43. The Carolina Panthers have an opening but Dave Gettleman is unlikely to sign you as less you come on the cheap. Gettleman is the biggest skinflint GM in the NFL and that is why Carolina continues to struggle. Have a nice day.

    ================================

Grading out as the 7th worst OT in all of the NFL is not average….it is well below average. As soon as 7 tackles are drafted in April there will no longer be a merit-based place for him in the league regardless of salary or baggage.

Just love these internet tough guys. Not one of you would say anything to his face. He may not be as thick skinned as other people, but he’s plenty tough. You don’t get anywhere near the NFL if you’re not.

  47. Some of the posters here are very cold, calloused individuals. I hope your life treats you better. The NFL, while certainly a dream career, must be insanely and unimaginably stressful. Best of luck in a all your endeavors Mr Martin!

Show of hands how many would deride Martin to his face. You do it here but can you back it up?

    _——_————-

I’ll say something straight to his face. Just another person bro. Athletes are people just like you and I.

  51. There have got to be enough anti bullying laws and rules around to protect a guy like Jonathan Martin. However there are no rules to shield him from the reality. He’s now in his prime and is just not good enough to play in the NFL.

  52. Jonathan Martin has all the ability in the world, but never was really passionate about football. He’s more of an intellectual type guy and really is just playing for the easy money. He would probably think it’s a blessing to finally get on with life after football. He’ll do fine without football. I know he’ll forever be tied to Ritchie Incognito. Incognito is the opposite. He has a lot of passion for football, and he’s the exact opposite of an intellectual. Incognito has major personal issues, but if he can keep things under control he can be a very good player. Both these guys are exactly what we thought they were coming out of college.

  53. Way to go Baalke/Tomsula; glad you cut this softie. It was a dumb trade from the start, whether Harbaugh had familiarity with him or not. Ultimately, Baalke was responsible for acquiring Martin. Not Harbaugh. Both Baalke and Baby Jed made it abundantly clear, who was in charge. Who else seems to think that Baalke acts like the GM and HC? Tomsula needs to talk more, despite his uncomfortability in interviews/in front of the big lights.

  54. Anybody who is 6’6″, 330 lbs. and is bullied is a straight up puthy. The dude’s mom is a friggin labor lawyer looking for an angle to sue. The entire league should shun his ath.

  55. My Niners should have signed Incognito over Martin. Buffalo got a steal of a deal signing that man. He’s a beast on the line. With all the domestic violence and rape charges that has been going around the NFL. It makes Incognito’s black balling from the NFL the past 2 years look ridiculous.

  56. As a guy who can play swing tackle and guard, his versatility and ideal size will get him an invitation to someone’s camp. He may not be a starter in 2015, but I think he’ll find home. His versatility alone would help many teams in regards to bench depth.

  57. Trent Balke is clearly bullying. J Mart was 75% of the problem in Miami but I am not getting sucked into it again. That big man child is a joke.

  58. Ah yes! Nothing like reading a bunch of brainless internet comments to remind you that most people are idiots. The Zombie Apocalypse can’t come soon enough.

My take has always been that Incognito is a known jerk, but the fault in all of this was with the O-line coach who ordered that Martin be “toughened up”, and the Dolphins organization in general that allowed it to happen. Incognito became the scapegoat for the organizational ineptitude with this whole mess.

As far as Martin – need I remind all the internet tough guys that this was his workplace. He was treated like this at work. He may not have handled it in the expected “it’s cool bro” way, but clearly he was targeted and bullied.

It was an attempt to get him to bond with his teammates (I guess), but the tone-deaf coaches didn’t seem to realize, surprisingly, that not everyone will respond to that treatment the same way.

For everyone calling Martin out – if you were treated that way you wouldn’t be OK with it. Simple as that. It doesn’t matter that it’s a football locker room. It has nothing to do with “toughness”, it has to do with respect, dignity and a guy simply wanting to be left alone.

  59. Incognito is a bad guy, there’s no doubt. That being said, Martin did not handle the situation well at all. He is physically capable, but lacking in backbone. I would say that to his face and hope I didn’t get hurt.

  60. pioniere says: Mar 26, 2015 4:47 PM

Ha, too funny. Incognito now has a job, and tattle-tale Martin does not. Karma is sweet!
    ———————————————————-
In 5 years, Incognito will either be incarcerated or dead, while Martin will be a gainfully employed and productive member of society.

  61. Hey, he signed with Carolina…and for them, that’s an upgrade! Lucky for him, the Falcons, Saints and Buccaneers don’t have the pass rushers that the Cardinals, Rams and Seahawks have. That said, this is probably his last shot to make it…

  62. Incognito is a jerk and has a known history. Martin didn’t handle this whole thing well, sure, but I still feel that this was an obvious failing of the Dolphins’ coaching staff.
