Pagano, Grigson could have a hard time staying on same page this year

AP

2015 began as the year of the mutual parting, with a pair of successful coaches who were unable to achieve ultimate success leaving their teams.  That trend could continue in 2016, if the Colts don’t extend the contract of coach Chuck Pagano, and if he moves on after the season ends.

Complicating matters is the identical status of G.M. Ryan Grigson.  Both he and Pagano will be commencing contract years, which means that either Grigson or Pagano may bear the ultimate blame for the failure of the Colts to get beyond (or at least stay within 38 points of) the Patriots.

It also means that Grigson and Pagano could be tempted to blame each other, in the event that the 2015 season at any point unravels.  If, for example, the team’s run defense — its “Achilles heel,” per Pagano — continues to fail to slow down New England, Pagano could be tempted to blame it on the personnel, and Grigson could be tempted to blame it on the coaching.

Bob Kravitz of WTHR.com suspects, as he explained during Friday’s PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio, that a disconnect already exists between Pagano and Grigson.  The leak that Pagano (but not Grigson) won’t be getting a new contract before the season at a minimum raises a question about whether Pagano already is being set up to take the fall.

Regardless of their current relationship, it becomes critical for Pagano and Grigson to band together, setting aside a desire to survive something less than a full-blown purge and accepting the notion that both will stay or both will go.  Three years ago, owner Jim Irsay opted to press the reset button, firing both coach Jim Caldwell and G.M. Bill Polian.  This time around, Irsay may be inclined to fire only one or the other; after the 2001 season, Polian stayed and coach Jim Mora was let go.

To be as successful as they possible can be, Pagano and Grigson need to commit to cooperation and mutual support.  That’s definitely easier said than done, especially since one of them sits in a box with the owner during games and the other one is down on the sidelines, wondering what they may be talking about up there.

  1. I dunno, doesn’t seem like a drama to me (yet). Seems more like IKEA instructions for how to build a drama….

  2. I’ve never been truly impressed with either of these guys fun the beginning. Pagano has a great story and seems like a hell of a guy, and I would wish him well, unlike Grigson. He’s spent heavily on free agents and tried to make this the old Eagles in certain spots, stressing the word old. Don’t even get me started on the Richardson fiasco. If they cleaned house, fine. Bring in Harbaugh if that’s the case.

  3. No problem in Indy. Irsay just has to propose a six point touchdown, followed by a two point conversion, then a 39 point 50 yard field goal.

  4. This is such an overplayed story. If Pags & Grigs want their extensions, they’re gonna have to earn it. It’s as simple as that. That’s not to say that they’ll be fired if they don’t make/win the Super Bowl, but they do have to get to the playoffs, and make a run.

  5. The only thing that may be worse than failure for these two is success. Three years of 11 wins each year; three years in the playoffs. How do you question that? Irsay ought to do what suits his skillset best – stay the heck out of the way.

  6. Could be that maybe Irsay knows something is coming down on the Colts for “deflategate” and Grigson’s hands are dirty.

  7. Ryan Grigson is a tool.

Chick Pagano, while not an elite coach is good enough to probably get another HC job should the Colts go down in flames in the playoffs again, I doubt Grigson would get anothet GM job.

  8. Seems like the ground is being laid for Grigson to step aside, so Peyton can return after he retires for the big chair in the front office, just like Elway received with the Broncos.

  9. Grigson should have already been shown the door. Pagano isn’t some great coach, but he’s clearly doing more with less there. It helps to have Andrew Luck, but he’s still doing a lot with a short hand.

  10. We all know Grigson has no problem making excuses or throwing people under the bus. Rooting for Pagano here.

  11. Nothing warms my heart more than stories of dysfunction surrounding the Indianapolis Irsay’s. It took almost 31 years for it to surface but it sure seems like good old Jimmy is turning into rotten old Robert all of a sudden. I’m looking forward to it all, can’t wait!

  12. I like that everyone simply assumes the AFC championship is going to come down to the Colts and Pats again. Going out on a limb and guessing some other teams might have something to say about that.

  13. When Pigano was asked if he knew anything about deflated football complaints, he said he knew nothing about it, that they felt fine to him. Way to go….nothing like making trouble for another team when you’re down by 40 points, then lying about it…real character guy. When you can’t beat them, lie about them right pigano?

31 years….. It is time to get over it.

  15. It’s a bit presumptuous to assume the Colts are going to make the AFC Championship again. I mean, the Pats are pretty much a lock, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Ravens, Broncos or some other dark horse team overtake the Colts next season.

  16. Pagano isnt a good head coach. Great story as a Cancer survivor, but he’s just another ex Raven DC who’s success was more about Ray lewis than his own talents.

  17. Do you think their mutual insecurity may have had something to do with the deranged attempt to blame deflated balls for their inability to beat the Patriots?

Desperate people do desperate things and virtually everything the Colts did in connection with Deflategate was odd, premeditated, and anything but by-the-book.

It is starting to look like maybe these guys really did have a motivation to deflate the ball in their possession.

  18. Get rid of them both. Pagano is suppose to be a defensive guy and the defense has been a joke. It’s the same story every year for the Colts; can’t stop the run. The same teams do the same stuff to them year in and year out. Grison has been terrible. Missed on Werner, missed on Richardson, over spent on a bunch of medicore players because the Colts had the benefit of Luck being on his rookie contract. He gets no credit for picking Luck, that was a no brainer. Luck would have gone first regardless of who was picking.

  19. Pagano is a hell of a DC A lot better than bend but don’t break Pees. The problem is the defensive side of the ball lacks talent that’s Grigsons fault.

  20. The Colts are not a deep team and injuries kill them. Of course, every team suffers injuries.

I think the Texans are going to surprise some people in that division. The collars are already getting tight in Indy.

I see losses to Houston, Buffalo, Miami, Pittsburgh, New England, and Denver. Ten and six may get them into the playoffs but certainly not a bye.

  21. I think Irsay is having a DEFLATED view of Pagano and Grigson. Can’t wait for deflategate to burn the hapless Colts again.

  22. Isray is a dunce most of the time but he is right to not extend either one of these guys. They have the best young QB in the game (might be 2nd only to Rodgers) and they haven’t been a real contender yet. I think the GM has been more of the problem but the new GM will want his own coach. Pagano will find work again. Grigson? I wouldn’t hire him.

  23. they can’t even get on the same page about knowledge of deflated footballs.

that speaks volumes of their relationship

  24. One can deflate the ball while the other one wipes his tears away as they are getting smoked again by the GOAT Pats. Harbawl can offer a shoulder to cry on.

  25. It’s karma for framing the Patriots. All of the Colts fans ,Kravits ,Doyal led the charge besmirching the Patriots all the while standing on imaginary high morel ground. When the wells report comes out and shines a light on your own corruption and dirty deeds tell me Colts fans what shall we call you? “cheaters” is taken, what do you call a team that frames and spreads lies on another? The truth will come out Colt fans and it will hurt.

  26. I heard of Coach killing QB’s, does this now make Frank Gore a ” coach mutually departing” running back? Could he be the leak?
I kid…. I kid. Nothing but love for you Frank.

  27. I’ve been saying this for a few years now: Pagano/Grigson are the most OVERRATED duo in the NFL. They have a tremendous QB in Andrew Luck, play in a division that seemingly never gets better, and yet they can’t get over the hump. Grigson has been nothing short of terrible as far as acquiring talent goes, and Pagano, well it’s hard to criticize him too much for not building a great defense since Grigson is too busy wasting draft choices, but he has to own it that Indi is a soft club and relies too much on Andrew Luck.

  28. Pagano is a man of high character and integrity. I’m sure after realizing Grigson’s role in #Framegate and reading Irsay’s tweets on the matter that he just wants to move on from the most fined organization in the NFL.

  29. I think all the old guys Indy has signed shows that Grigson knows his butt is on the block and they have to win the Super Bowl to keep his job. I haven’t watched the Colts close enough to know how good a coach Pagano is, but I’ll get a closer look when the Colts come to Carolina this year. Being a cancer survivor, you hope he can keep going, but the defense definitely needs to improve.

Oh I’m over it. In fact we’ve won two Superbowl Championships to Indy’s one. Its time now for Jimmy to have a decade or two run making Indy fans miserable. Karma.

  31. I see the Weasel Nation(pat fans) are here ragging on a team destined to clean their clock! This duo has done very well in three years-won in the playoffs, progressed each year even with retooling and a rookie quarterback. And they do not CHEAT!

  32. I would have fired Grigson and Pagano the day they traded for Tim Richardson

  33. Irsay himself came out and laid the blame for the lack of a run defense on Greg Manusky, the DC in Indy. Kravitz is a hack job–always has been.

  34. Grigson is doing a great job building this roster for the future, signing youngsters like Gore and Johnson. This week he has George Blanda, Satchel Paige and Gordie Howe coming in for visits.

Your team is next on the piped-in music hit parade. Every team knows you do it. colts can’t beat NE on their best day.

    #NESuperbowl Champions

  36. Grigson: Hey Chucky, Why did we only pin one football? You know it looks bad for us.

Pagano: Not my job – go ask Kinsel.

  37. Love the whining of the WEASEL NATION the defense for CHEATING! SHINE that trophy, caught again darn. You must Cheat better, everyone knows now!

  38. One thing is for sure, Michael Sam will not be playing in Indiana, home of bigotry. Hopefully the NFL, NBA will pull franchises from Indiana

  39. “I see the Weasel Nation(pat fans) are here ragging on a team destined to clean their clock! ”

Could you be any more delusional?

  40. Grigson to Mike Kensil:
We can set up a sting operation on the Patriots and it will be easy, right?

    Mike Kensil to Grigson:
Yes! I know how to do that! I’ll use my FBI skills I learned on TV!

    Grigson to Mike Kensil:
Great! I’m not going to tell my coach though.

    These guys are morons.
