Chad Greenway takes pay cut to stay with the Vikings

AP

We noted early this month that the Vikings wanted to keep Chad Greenway, but didn’t want to pay him the $7 million he was owed on his contract.

Problem solved.

Greenway has taken a pay cut that will give Minnesota more than $3.2 million in salary cap relief, Field Yates of ESPN reports. Greenway’s new base salary is $3.4 million. He has $1 million guaranteed this year and can get $600,000 in incentives.

The Vikings drafted Greenway in the first round in 2006 and he’s spent his entire career in Minnesota, and both sides want Greenway to finish his career in Minnesota. But it’s also clear that both sides realize that at age 32 and coming off an injury-plagued season, Greenway isn’t the same player he was when he signed his previous contract. Now he’s going to be making a salary more commensurate with where he is, late in his career.

  1. Glad he’s staying put! He’s not the player he once was, but still a leader. Maybe this will encourage Adrian to return to Minnesota.

  2. Smart move … his career is winding down … and this is the last substantial payday.

  3. I am glad to see Chad will finish his career as Viking. He wanted one more year and he has been a true professional his whole time with the Vikings.

  4. I don’t mind Chadway being resigned he’s been a quality guy and decent player but certainly not a starting caliber LB anymore.

  5. Glad the Vikings and Chad could come to an agreement for him to stay a Viking. He is a great team leader and one of the true good guys of the NFL. A true professional on and of the field. His Lead the Way Foundation helps give seriously ill children and families access to things to help make their life easier during the struggle of childhood illness.

The NFL needs more guys like this….

  6. And had he play lights out SURELY they’d have given him a raise. ……. Sheesh.

  7. Great business model. Draft and pay them little. Prove yourself to get a big contract only to get reduced a short time later.

  8. He’s never been an impact player and now that he’s lost more than a few steps he’s a giant liability. When pressed into duty last year Hodges and Cole easily had better games than Greenway has had in years. The guy is done. He has nothing left. my hope is that a talented rookie is drafted and Greenway is cut during camp.

  9. Compared to 35 year old Shaun Hill or 37 years old Terrance Newman, Chad Greenway at 32 is a spring chicken.

What do all three have in common? They have all lost a step or two, they are all in the twilight of their careers, and they are all making more than they should which logically means, they are all Vikings.

  10. Packer fans are truly a classy and clever bunch with their little comments. Wonder how they will choke away their season in 2015? Its going to be hard to beat that massive meltdown from last year, but if any team can do it, its them.

  11. We (Minnesota Viking 4life) heard about this for the last 4 months, why did it take so long to get it done. By the way people love to talk about how much Chad Greenway has lost and being on the team because he’s a leader. His most important skill at this point is he knows how to recognize offensive sets and call out the correct defense in which to line up the players. Anthony Barr called the defense a lot last year and he will have one more year of learning how to line people up via Chad Greenway-good luck Chad!

  12. Why??? So we have more cap room NOT to spend? You cant spend 20M on whats left.

  13. (Packer fan) Nice to see a mutual team/player loyalty story. Also nice to see all the accolades the bloggers offer. See you this fall on the gridiron!

  14. When will the NFLPA learn most (non-QB) position players sign a gazillion $$$$$ contract, 9 out of 10 times, a player either gets cut, or like Chad, gets his salary vastly reduced.

  15. Just think that our perennial playoff losing sisters to the east could have dad him but they choose AJ hawk instead! ANOTHER poor draft choice!

    )))))))))))))
When will the nfl learn that paying one player 20 to 25 million a season is not the way to build a team. These QB salaries have gotten out of hand.Yes they are important but it puts these teams at a disadvantage to build a team around these huge salaries.Nobody has addressed it yet.

  17. He is a good football player, good guy, good teamate who is just on the decline. He can still help his team, he just isn’t a premier player at this point.

  18. I agree with vikinganswer …save more cap space for what reason?? Other then Wallace (which may or may not work out) all we signed were scrubs and benchwarmers this whole off season. Anyone who thinks any of these moves will make the Vikings better are nuts. I like Greenway but this is a total waste of money and a roster spot. He’s done.

  19. a pros. pro. everybody wants in on the teddy train, everyone that isn’t a narsacistic moron anyway.

  20. Compared to 35 year old Shaun Hill or 37 years old Terrance Newman, Chad Greenway at 32 is a spring chicken.

You are actually making fun of the Vikings depth? Any observer without 1960s Green Bay highlights running through their mind might ask, who is the starting ILBs for the Packers? Who is the corner opposite the arm tackling Shields? TT was upset with himself with the backup QB situation last year. And Flynn is gone and Tolzien is backup with no 3rd?

But Aaron Rodgers will prop it all up…right?

  21. Yeah– the guy is real dumb to accept $3.2 MILLION dollars. to stay with the Vikings. Any of you on here making that kind of money? I’d say if you can make $3 million dollars when you have a chance, that’s a pretty good move. Greenway isn’t what he used to be and he gets a chance few can accomplish after a lot of years in the NFL– stay with one team for an entire career. Tell me again why some of you think he’s dumb?

  22. Thought I’d help fellow Viking fans understand why the Pack fans are always soiling our stories…..

“The Enemy Is Fear We Think It Is Hate But It is Fear.” – Gandhi

  23. It’s odd how his career is similar to AJ Hawk’s: drafted in the 1st round in the same year, solid players but not great, hard-working, fan favorites, and now no longer remotely worthy of huge money.

  24. My thing is if the team wants me to take a paycut from 7 mill to 3.4
The whole 3.4 mill should be guaranteed who is his agent

  26. Perfect example of a CLASS guy who still has skills, but realizes the team and he needed a compromise so this Purple Storm gets stronger!Ring of Honor coming your way down the road Chad!! SKOL!!

  27. Greenway’s paycheck will now be better aligned with his hapless and tasteless level of play…

Please help me? Who is the starter at ILB this year. Muffin seems to think all these sudden gaping holes on defense will be filled within in the locker room. I guess TT informed him that there is no soup for you. Even Guion is visiting other teams possibly further depleting the middle.

If Adrian Peterson returns. and Forte and Riddick pounding at them..….This will be very very bad news for the Green Bay Rodgers…

  28. Unlike the Packers who wanted to leave Green Gay once their contracts are up. This just means we are the better franchise, better people and better state, unlike the dump Green Bay WI.

  29. Chad Greenway > Clay Mathews

Poor Clay. Having to move inside eliminates a good edge rusher. But it is not his fault. What can Capers do with TT’s ILBs in dismal shape. The solution, move him inside and watch his hamstrings seize up? Thats quite a price to pay for terrible personnel decisions.

  30. Just think that our perennial playoff making brothers to the east could have dad him but they chose AJ hawk instead! ANOTHER draft choice that earned a half dozen playoff wins, a SB championship, and four consecutive division titles!

There. My auto-correct was off earlier.

    ___________
Are you seriously blaming the NFLPA for teams cutting players or not being able to sign other players because the TEAM decided to allocate a huge amount of money towards some other players????

Ok tell me how exactly is the NFLPA to do?

    1. Teams cut players and force players to take a paycut for ANY reason. I’ve seen players even after performing at a high level, even with cap space. Maybe they get cut or forced to take a paycut simply because according to the team the market for that position changed.

I guess you could blame the NFLPA for not fighting harder for fully guaranteed contracts for their members in a league that makes more money than any other sports league in the world the NFL is the only one that doesn’t have guaranteed contracts thus the player’s are treated like disposable commodities. NHL, NBA, MLB, European League Soccer…..all hugely successful leagues. All provide guaranteed contracts to players and thus no contract disputes between team and player.

Grow up. You should know about choking, your team is 0-4 in Super Bowl games, isn’t it? And how long has it been since you’ve even been in one? The Packers are the gold standard for the division, and that really bugs you. As for Greenway, he is a good player who is simply aging. I like him, he would be a good guy for any team. He just isn’t an elite player.

  34. rho1953 Don’t forget the last 5 NFC Championship games the Vikings made it to. The Vikings are 0 – 5! The Packers are chokers?? lmao!!

  35. Why do people like “clamdigger” waste our time (and their own) to post nasty, negative and untrue comments about pro ballplayers like Chad Greenway.
(Who, incidentally, was just elected the winner of the
Byron “Wisser” White award as the NFL Man of the Year!)

  36. He used to be a great player. Hes had a few injurys. I don’t think hes worth that kind of money any more. Its a young mans game. They should build there defence through the draft instead of free agency. Its to big of a risk through free agency. They don’t play as hard as the college kids do and the college kids get less money.

  37. The Vikings only have one glaring hole to address in the draft? Is there a top 15 prospect that can play OLine and WR that I don’t know about, or a TE that can stay healthy enough to play 10 games a season?

I also don’t think CM3 should even be put in the same sentence as Chad. They are asked to do such different things Greenway is a tackling machine in a 4-3, while Matthews worse season ever he had 6.0 Sacks. Greenways best season ever he had 5.5. Matthews also gets asked to step up and make big plays in the Super Bowl after Charles Woodson got hurt.

Thats is the question of the year. I am no shrink, but I would think the Packer fans expectations can’t meet the performance of their team, and with every playoff loss, it get worse and worse..Their anger is also a direct result of watching their rivals get better while they just lean on Aaron Rodgers to get them though doing little to better themselves for next year.

  39. What have the Vikings done this off-season to get SO much better?

They still have Project Patterson, Kalil needs to find his game again, cut Jennings… to trade for the other overpaid (and from what I hear selfish) Wallace, signed a 37 YO DB, The best chance at improving the team from last year to this one, is if AP doesn’t force his way out of town. Even he does come back , he is over 30, by the time the next season starts, he will have played ONE game in the 20 Months.

The fact is you don’t KNOW if the team got better until October when they start actually playing for a bit.

  40. This is why rick spielman is the best gm on the most historic team in the nfl.

Once peterson agrees to come back the purple and gold confetti will be falling in February.

  41. No, Matthews did NOT have his worst season ever. He moved inside and it had a major disruptive impact on opposing offenses. It is simplistic to measure his success solely on sacks. The overall defense improved dramatically.

  42. You will never see me post a negative comment about Greenway, I think he is a very good player and a great teammate. Unlike jealous Vikings fans, I can laud players from other teams who deserve it. I would have been proud to have Greenway as a Packer, and he would have a Super Bowl ring now had he played with the Packers their last Super Bowl year.

  43. YES!! Man, one final run with Greenway. Always been one of my favorite Vikings and will go down as one of the greats!

P.S. Internet trolls who hate on Chad Greenway? I feel bad for you, like, as a person and whatever empty space exists where your soul should be.

  44. Good deal for both sides — that’s still a pretty good payday for a guy at the end of his career.

  45. “P.S. Internet trolls who hate on Chad Greenway? I feel bad for you …”

Of course you’re kind of doing the same thing … only to them.

  46. I think the problem with the vikings is that they sign all the washed up former packer players who don’t have nothing left in the tank. The reason why your team doesn’t have any championship is because they spend to much money in free agency instead of building your team through the draft and adding a couple of reasonable priced free agents. Ted thompson probably laughs when he cuts a player because he knows there gonna go to the vikings. Every team should do what the packers and patriots do and build your team through the draft. Thats why they win every. Its a no brainer!

  47. “shepwp1 says: (Packer fan) Nice to see a mutual team/player loyalty story. Also nice to see all the accolades the bloggers offer. See you this fall on the gridiron!”

I’m glad to finally see a Packer fan come onto a Viking’s story and show some class. It does show we can, perhaps, find some mutual courtesy for one another after all. Thank you shepwp1.

  48. Draft and Develop takes to long to fully implement for almost all GM’s to stomach. It takes unbelievable patience, a quality most GM’s and all billionaire owners do not possess. It also takes amazing faith in your coaching staff to get all these draft picks and UDFA’s up and running in one or, at most, two training camps. Perhaps only the Packers will be able to maintain it because they don’t have a billionaire owner.

Wrong. I am not an internet troll, I am a grounded, mature adult who is merely pointing out my lack of a need to pick on well respected, community/family oriented famous people in order to feel better about myself.

I am not hating on anyone, all things being equal? I am simply pointing out my superiority and my genuine feelings of pity for people who are so insecure, and whom possess such a massive lack of self-esteem that they must take shots at a good man(who will NEVER read their comments) to validate their meaningless existences.

    Capiche?

  50. Take a cut in pay to play for the worst franchise in the history of the NFL. Greenway isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer. I guess this explains his bust of a career

But they made it to the NFC Championship game, while the Vikings missed the playoffs for the 4th time out of the last 5 years. Really, talk about choking coming from a Vikings fan is quite ironic, considering this team has choked away 3 NFC Championships and lost 4 Super Bowls without ever winning one.

  53. Smart move. It’s identical to what Hawk did. AJ Hawk also recognized his own diminishing skills, accepted a reduced salary, and was able to extend his career another three years with a perrenial contender.

    Well, not EXACTLY identical.

  54. For the most part i read Vikings or packers stuff to see the back and forth between the fan bases. If i am a Packers fan though, i might want to not make to many peeps this offseason. The Vikings didn’t make huge waves, but they didn’t have too. The draft is where they improve a team like that and i think they will. Not to mention Bridgewater is clearly going to be at the very least a good QB and i think Wallace will flourish with a QB who can throw the ball over 20 yards down the field.

If they can get the foolish Cowboys or some other team to part ways with a 1st for peterson, the Vikings can win the division

  55. Come on Ohand… if you were an actual Packer fan you would know a few of TTs base rules…. if you’re groomed a Packer in house & do well becoming a FA after the Rookie Contract … they will pay you well (Greg Jennings ’09 Sitton, Lang) and give you a chance to hit FA before you are 30. If you are about to or do turn 30 TT will take into consideration how well you fit the scheme and effectiveness you have (see Greg Jennings to Min.). If you happen to be turning 30 but they can have someone younger with equal skills and upside (Jennings/Cobb) they will move on.

  56. Remember the last time my Vikings won the division and a playoff game??

    Yeah. Neither do I.

And i am a Viking Fan. But this guy is totally over rated. He will make the Pro Bowl if the 7 other guys picked pull out.
Why wouldn’t he take a pay cut? He’s not expected to win. He can take Baby pics and the Minny homers love the news stories about what a great Man he is. The Homers would rather cheer for a local homer than a winner. If he got cut he would have to play football for real. He can’t.
