Winston first, Williams second, and then the draft is wide open

AP

Everyone thinks the Buccaneers will take Jameis Winston with the first overall pick in the draft. Most people think the Titans will take Leonard Williams with the second pick. And after that? No one knows.

Taking a look at a total of 10 mock drafts at Rotoworld, NFL.com and CBS, the general consensus is that there is no consensus beyond the Top 2 picks. Here are a few observations:

1. Everyone thinks Jameis Winston is going first. It’s not exactly breaking news at this point that the Buccaneers are expected to take Winston with the first overall pick in the draft. All 10 mock drafts had Winston going first.

2. Almost everyone thinks Leonard Williams is going second. One mock draft has Marcus Mariota going to Tennessee with the second overall pick. Eight of the other nine mock drafts had Williams, the USC defensive lineman, going No. 2. And the other mock draft that didn’t have Williams going second had Nebraska’s Randy Gregory going second — and that comes with an asterisk, because that mock draft came out before the news broke that Gregory had failed a marijuana test at the Combine, which may hurt his draft stock.

3. If Mariota doesn’t go second, no one knows where he’s going. Various mock drafts have him going third, sixth, seventh, 10th, 12th and 13th. Predicting where Mariota will land this year may prove as hard as predicting where Johnny Manziel and Teddy Bridgewater would land last year.

4. Dante Fowler looks like a very high pick. Most mock drafts have Fowler, the Florida outside linebacker, going third overall to Jacksonville. Everyone has Fowler going in the Top 8.

5. The Raiders will draft Kevin White or Amari Cooper. The biggest debate in this year’s draft may be about whether the best wide receiver is West Virginia’s White or Alabama’s Cooper. There seems to be little doubt that Oakland will draft one of them. Seven mock drafts have White going fourth overall to the Raiders, and the other three have Cooper going fourth overall to the Raiders.

6. Vic Beasley is all over the map. Beasley, the Clemson pass rusher, could go No. 3 to Jacksonville, No. 22 to Pittsburgh, or anywhere in between, depending on whom you believe.

7. Iowa’s Brandon Scherff is probably the top offensive lineman. Six of the mock drafts have Scherff as the first lineman off the board, but there’s widespread disagreement about how high he’ll go: Perhaps as high as No. 5, but there may also not be any offensive linemen in the Top 10.

8. At least one running back is going in the first round. The first-round running back once looked like an endangered species, but this year everyone agrees that either Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon or Georgia’s Todd Gurley, or both, will be a first-round pick.

9. No one really knows anything. A month away is still far too early to predict the draft with any degree of accuracy. All it takes is one team early in the draft to surprise us, and the domino effect will completely reshape the rest of the first round. And if that surprise early on is the Buccaneers taking someone other than Winston, you can tear up every mock draft right then and there.

  1. #9. So true. Especially when you have a team like the Redskins drafting in the first round for the first time in like 5 years.

They truly don’t know what they’re doing.

  2. …and your No 9 is the most accurate of all the Mock Drafts

“No one really knows anything. A month away is still far too early to predict the draft with any degree of accuracy….”

  3. I hope Tampa trades out of the Winston pick! Best QB in the draft ? Absolutely! That kid will get destroyed behind that O-line though! Might be second coming of when Texans took Carr 1st overall or lions took Harrington 1st overall. A QB can’t do jack S if he is on his back every play. Would rather see bucs trade down and get the rebuild process in full swing, a QB is not their awnser .

  4. As a Saints fan
I just hope they keep pick 13 slot and take the best run stopping DT or the best pass rushing LB. Don’t move up here. If we can can move back a couple of spots and pickup another 2-3 rd rnd pic yeah I would.

With the pick at 31 I’d pick a CB here. w e need one pretty bad Browner is a stop gap till either we find another young one.or if one of the O-line guys fall grab him

  5. QB is always the answer in the NFL. You got one you’re a playoff team, you don’t you’re not.
In this draft it looks like good OL talent is going to slide to late 1st early 2nd. Tampa could take Winston and shore up the OL with the their second pick.
Mariota is going to be a project for everyone but Chip Kelly, but is such a solid kid and athlete at the position someone will trade into the top 5 for him.
Still think Bradford ends up in Cleveland and Philly gets the Browns 12th pick and makes a move up for Marcus.

  6. Hopefully it is Winston at 1,Williams at 2 then Jacksonville can get the RG3 type haul to trade the 3rd pick for Mariota. Kinda can’t wait to see Jacksonville at 3 just waving Mariota at Chip to get him to bite. Go Jags!

  7. The mock drafts are always an educated guessing game. When the top five teams are willing to trade out, it’s near impossible to paint a portrait with any accuracy.
    .

  8. Tampa has definitely already made their mind up on Winston. They don’t even call him Winston anymore, they just call him Jameis. Everyone in that building is already on a first name basis with him.

  9. Cooper and White could both be very good WR’s.
Really don’t see a loss either way there.

  10. You guys drafted Bortles last year. Who in their right mind would think the Jags would even sniff Mariota with their pick?

You really got excited typing all that up didn’t you? Probably not as excited as actually believing what you wrote.

  11. Alamba- re-read xboax’s post. I’ll add to xbox4wwe’s post and say I’d love to see the Jags actually draft Mariota at 3 and then deal with the frenetic Jets and Eagles over the next 15 minutes, eventually sending him to NY for the 6th pick plus whatever gravy on top.

OAK goes WR and WASH will probably pick a long snapper or something. JAX then gets Fowler as planned at 3 and cashes in the Jets gravy later.

  12. The Titans will either trade out of #2 or take Mariota.

There are a LOT of needs in Tennessee and Mettenberger may or may not be the answer. The Titans can’t afford to pass on a franchise quarterback unless they can net a haul of picks that’ll rebuild the team. Not to mention USC has a pretty terrible reputation the past 20 years for “can’t miss” defensive linemen.. Lol.

  13. I hope the Titans don’t take Mariota 2nd. Yes, they need a QB but if you saw the Championship game against the Buckeyes there are a lot of throws he can’t make and his accuracy is terrible.

  14. I don’t think any team wants to pay the price for Tampa’s number one pick, so Winston is probably a safe bet to go number one. But after that, I think the Titans, Jaguars, and Raiders will all see offers coming their way. The rumour of Rivers to the Titans in trade is an interesting one, even though San Diego denies it.
If no deals can be struck then I think it is , 1. Winston, 2. Williams, 3. Fowler and 4. Cooper.

  15. Mock drafts are a joke. After the first one or two picks, everything that’s been predicted almost always goes up in smoke. No one knows who’s going to go where, which is the beauty of the draft.

  16. I’m yet to see any mock giving Jax and Bortles a WR like Cooper. I guess I’m unsure why this is out of the question. I could easily see that happening and blowing up these already senseless mock drafts.

  17. I think the Raiders will take Cooper at #4. Reggie McKenzie has shown himself to be cautious. He didn’t sign any “risky” players during free agency. Cooper at #4, the best available edge rusher in round 2, and the Raiders are on the rise…..

  18. “I’m yet to see any mock giving Jax and Bortles a WR like Cooper”

Didn’t the Jags take 2-3 WR’s in last year’s draft? They need pass rush and OL more than WR.

  19. Mariota will be an Eagle. Write it down. I know people who are personal friends with Cataldi on WIP, and off the record he’s said Chip is obsessed with Mariota and has been planning to get him since early last year. He talked about it off the record (to Cataldi) all season. Just watch.

  20. Mariota will just pull an Elway/Eli, and refuse to play for any team that drafts him besides the Eagles. He always has the option to re-enter next years draft instead of playing for any other team. This way Mariota and Chip get to be reunited again, albeit 1 year later. And besides, what team would want to select any player that refused to join a team that they didn’t want to play with in a 2nd draft. Worked for Elway and Eli.

  21. “I’m yet to see any mock giving Jax and Bortles a WR like Cooper”

    ———————————————–

True.. Just that pairing Bortles with a potential elite #1 WR and more polished weapon seems as realistic as all the other possibilities. Can’t wait to see it all shake out.

  22. The league will be over if white or cooper falls to us and we put him opposite OBJ and Cruz.

  23. The rams will use the second rounder they got from Philly in next year’s draft to trade up this year to get the leftovers of white or cooper.

  24. “… but there may also not be any offensive linemen in the Top 10.”

I would offer that if this comes to pass, Minnesota at #11 will jump on Brandon Scherff.

  25. Winston will be a bust and I’ll tell you why. I don’t think there has ever been a successful modern-day NFL QB that has had character issues.
There is too much of a demand on that position that you really can’t have any weaknesses or distractions.
I said the same thing about Manziel.

  26. Giants fans that think they’ll be drafting a WR with the 9th pick are clueless.

    =
    Ben Roethlisberger.

Aside from the multiple bathroom incidents he’s been disliked by teammates and regarded as lazy and entitled all throughout his career. Only recently has he seemed to get it together.

  28. One of the problems with mock drafts, is that they don’t account for how a team usually drafts in the first place. Some go for need, while others go for best available player. Need is usually done through FA, but not always. And let’s not forget the typical trading up and down that ALWAYS happens. Mocks have been studied and shown to be halfway accurate the first 5 – 6 picks (but not 100%), but after that get out the dartboard. Anyone want to play dominoes??

  29. Hope the higher projections don’t fall to Mia because they are said to then package more picks for that spot.

It may even shake out this way if it doesn’t happen and be a lack luster draft. They do need to hit on a Ja’Wuan James 2.0 however.

  30. Why wouldn’t the Raiders draft Vic Beasley?

You can find Receivers later in the draft (Patriots/Seahawks/Packers for example never draft a wideout early).

You’d get Khalil Mack and Vic Beasley on the same defense?

    C’mon… that’s common sense.

  31. At #8 the Falcons will be taking………. absolutely nobody as punishment for 12thManGate. Coming down tomorrow.

  32. “You can find Receivers later in the draft (Patriots/Seahawks/Packers for example never draft a wideout early).”

The lack of an impact WR was one of the primary reasons Seattle lost the Super Bowl, so that is not a good example.

  33. 0 Chance Vic falls that far. He is the best D player in the draft. Williams is just a very good 3-4 DE. Although I think Vic would be great in the right 3-4 as a MLB or OLB. He isnt a Harrison like guy but could very well play that role. IMO he is a closer to Clay Mathews. Either was I cant see him dropping past 6th. Your not taking anther DE or OLB over him and the DB class is rather then. I like Fowler but if Vic is there you have to take him IMO. The only reason I can see Jax passing on him is they have consistently gone 3-4 guys even though they still run a 4-3. It is maddening to a point.

  34. Tampa Bay will takeover the Raiders in dumbest moves. This guy Winston will be in trouble all the time. The Hillsborough Sheriff will not be covering up for his crimes. You don’t draft a troublemaker into his hometown to hang with his homies. Stupidity at its finest

  35. No way Beasley goes to Steelers at 22. Cincy will snag him at 21, although I believe Beasley will be in top 10

  36. Cooper and White will both be fine. Just SEC blowhards saying that the Raiders or whoever woul be dumb to draft White first over Cooper.

Both have good size and can make make plays. So what if White only flashed for one year. Same thing can be said for Clay Mathews when he was at USC. Some guys blossom later. Personally I like White as a physical mismatch in the NFL with his speed and strength combo.

Just depends on what you want…a smooth Torry Holt like receiver in Cooper, or a Julio Jones like threat in White.

  37. Mariota is going second. He is either going to Tennessee or someone will trade. Tampa will make the huge mistake and take the overrated Winston. I would not touch Winston with a ten foot pole.

  38. I have a feeling this will be a draft that we won’t forget. Its in Chicago this year and there will be some insane trading going on. My prediction which doesn’t mean much has Philip Rivers being traded. Just a hunch.

You must be a UF that didn’t goto UF. Since when is Bessemer, Alabama remotely close to Tampa, Florida or do you think Tallahassee is Winstons hometown? Either way, Tallahassee is a good 6 hours away from Tampa and not his hometown.

  40. It’s best to tear up those mock drafts. This draft will be providing a lot of surprises on April 30th. Especially, the quarterback position.

How could we even make the same mistake the skins made we only tank a season for the #1 pick and we didn’t morgagte our future for the 2nd overall pick.. So even if Winston sucks we could still draft another qb the next.. As a buc fan I wouldn’t be surprised if we have the #1 pick again next year

    ======================================

    I agree.
Both should be outstanding players in the NFL.
Even if both teams should probably draft a pass rusher first it looks like White and Cooper can end up in Oakland and Chicago.
With the Bears moves on defense in free agency I can live with an impact WR like either one of these guys.

  43. As a Jaguars fan, I sure hope that they have learned their lesson and will not take a Gator defensive player in the 1st round. They haven’t worked out too well for them in the past.

  44. Draft parties on a Thursday? BOOOOOOO! All day drinking, bbqing, drafting, drinking, sleeping, drafting, eating, and drinking were the bomb!

  45. Mock drafts are for web page clicks. Not any one of them ever takes into account that a team might make trades to increase their effectiveness in the draft, so they’re all BS. No draft ever goes by the numbers. Somebody’s always wheeling and dealing, and that blows a hole in all mock drafts

They’re good for analyzing what a team needs at any one given moment, but that’s about it. In that case, mock drafts are more for seeing what your team needs in terms of players at position to make the team better. Anyone who believes that their team will draft according to these mock drafts needs to come back from Disneyland.

I try not to give them too much cred. (But the being the football junkie I am, I find it hard to resist reading them!)

  46. Personally, in hindsight, I’d like to see the Browns send both of their 1st rd. picks to Tennessee for the chance to get Mariota..

That would be give the Titans 3 picks in the first 34.

  47. The Rapist Winston will be in jail before he finishes his rookie contract. This clown has no personal integrity. There is no reason to spend more than a fifth rounder on this guy who has so much personal negatives. In an era when we want integrity, you’ll find that Winston has none.
