Report: “Spirited debate” about where Koa Misi will play in Miami

The Dolphins parted ways with a pair of linebackers this offseason when they released Phillip Wheeler and traded Dannell Ellerbe and there’s reportedly some difference of opinion within the organization about other changes at the position.

Koa Misi moved to middle linebacker last season and made 11 starts at the position for the Dolphins. Misi had 64 tackles and a sack in those appearances and Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald reports that head coach Joe Philbin said last week that “as of right now” Misi will remain at the position next season.

Defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle is reportedly on board with that, while the personnel department feels differently. Per Beasley, they’d like Kelvin Sheppard to get a shot in the middle while Misi returns to his previous spot on the outside of the defense. Misi started 26 games there in 2012 and 2013 and would likely remain on the first team on the strong side if he does move.

Jelani Jenkins is set for one outside spot, but the Dolphins need to round out their linebacking group over the rest of the offseason. Misi’s ability to play either spot gives them some flexibility about how to go about doing that, although that flexibility may not be needed if the personnel guys are set on pushing him to the outside.

  1. What “spirited debate”? This boils down to who they get in the Draft. If the Dolphins take Kendrik for MLB, Misi moves to OLB. The Dolphins have 5 Starting Quality LBs, but not one real Middle which is critical in a 4-3. However, with Suh in for all downs may not be as critical anymore. McCain and Jordan need to be given a chance to shine like Jenkins did.

  2. Thanks Jeff Ireland! He was a poor fit from the moment he was drafted.

However, at this point, College 3-4 LB Jordan should be a pro 4-3 OLB or traded. He is too skinny for a DE position.

And who ever picks Randy Gregory this year will learn the same thing.

  3. I’m not surprised they have an in-house option they’re excited about…I’m just shocked it’s not McCain.

  4. I’d love to see a trade back and to land Eric Kendricks in Miami while adding a 2nd round pick. Misi has all the physical tools to be a MLB and I thought he should have been playing inside going back to his time in a 3-4. However he was not and has not played it for a long time and thus his pre-snap reads and adjustments are not where they need to be. Suh will allow for a smaller MLB with his run stuffing ability and Kendricks has all the instincts to excel in the Dolphins D while Misi seals the edge so well on the strong side.
I’d be happy with Parker or Scherff at 14 as well and pre-injury Gurley at 14 would have been hard to pass up. I am not a Dallas Thomas fan however in his defence he was moved around far far too much and left to focus on being a pulling LG he may prove serviceable if Scherff is not available at 14. I don’t want to have to take a LG early but he would be an exception to the rule as I like him better than Zach Martin personally and paired with a mid to late round bruising RB would add a new dimension to the Dolphins offense.
My personal likes at 14 are in no order: WR D Parker, LG B Scherff or trade back.
My personal likes in the 20’s with a 2nd rounder added are RB: Melvin Gordon, LB Kendricks or DT Eddie Goldman (he can drop 15 lbs and play 1 or 3 tech like Suh who can stop the run and provides some pass rush especially if he shed some weight.
I do not want to draft a CB because Taylor needs to be given a chance outside why spend an early draft pick to never be given a chance to play?
I would miss him and would hate to see him go but I have a feeling the Dolphins are trying to shop Cam Wake to a contender (only if the deal is right though) to a) get Jordan in the starting line-up and b) to get something rather than nothing for Wake in the way they got nothing for: Jake Long, Karlos Dansby, Solai or Starks (when they were going into the last year of their deals),…

  5. And I agree Dion Jordan should never have been asked to become a DE with his coverage skills but that unfortunately does not look like something that will change. He should be playing OLB on the strong side in 3-4 and 4-3 packages imo. If they did move him to SAM and Misi stayed in the middle a DE suddenly becomes a need with Wake not getting any younger and who I think could be on the trade block.

  6. If you figure in Tripp, and Jordan playing DE and OLB, with Sheppard, Misi, Jenkins and McCain. You have a pretty talented group. Not proven, but very talented. Trusnik will most likely be signed and he played better than could have been hoped for most of the season. Though he fell off a bit at the end. He still has the most experience and brings it every game. Whether they draft Kendrick, or sign a vet free agent is another option.

  7. Put Jordan and McCain on the field. Misi is decent but not great. Same with Tripp. Jordan would actually be interesting as MLB but I doubt he has the smarts or strength for it. He has height and speed and can cover TEs. He it’s not a thumper but he can tackle as good as the rest of Miami’s LBs. They have guys that can rotate in and out with little dropoff. Suh will help whomever is in the middle. Miami just needs to find a combo that works.

  8. Misi should line up far outside. Beyond the sideline, but before the cheerleaders.

I believe some teams call this spot ‘the bench’.

  9. I know almost nothing about the Dolphins. But shouldn’t it be the coach who decides who plays where? I always thought the personnel department was in charge of acquiring talent, not deciding who plays where.

  10. You guys are making the same mistake here that everybody is making on the Dolphin blogs — Dion Jordan is a defensive end , not a linebacker (unless you’re changing over to a 4-3 defense , which they aren’t going to do with Suh there). People see Jordan run fast in a straight line down the field on two or three plays and then think he’s a coverage LB. Jordan is nearly 6’7″ , and there isn’t one linebacker in the league — not one — that height , at least in a 4-3. There’s *one* guy , Julius Peppers , who played DE for thirteen or fourteen years before moving to a 3-4 OLB with Green Bay.

  11. I meant to say “changing over to a 3-4 defense , which they aren’t going to do with Suh there.”

That’s the way it should be if you have a smart coach but in this case someone has to step in and tell Philbin what to do for one more season, then he’s gone.

  13. Coyle and philbin aren’t going anywhere this year so just shut up about that. I got an easy solution. Keep misi in the middle and let dion Jordan and chris mccain battle for the last spot

  14. You ppl do notice the Dolphins run the 4-3,3-4, 5-2 and other defenses that I have no clue what they’re doing right? That defense is complicated. reason why players were complaining after week 3, when they had OV and wake (DEs) covering Rb and Te. Dion can be a beast at Lb that’s what he played in college

  15. Koa Misi will move to the sam outsidelinebacker role and the 1st or 2nd round Draft pick will probably go on a mike LB. Koa hasn’t displayed the natural instincts for the mike role.

Bad coach, failure Tannenbaum running the team now- it’s a clown show.

  17. The Dolphins lost 5 defensive starters and signed one guy to take their place. Keep that in mind when you’re talking about what a great offseason Miami is having.

  18. We sealed our fate by bringing back Coyle. We have been at our best in a 3-4. We have gotten worse under Coyle as a 4-3….PERFECT bring him back! Mediocrity IS acceptable…..sigh

YEP. The only stud we have is Wake. He could play qb if he wanted. I just think we are not served well playing a 4-3…

Cameron (TE), Stills(WR), and McCain(CB), have been added, plus about $20 mil in cap space. So what have the pats done since losing your DB’s, besides signing Chimdi Chekwa? Try and educate yourself before commenting on other teams troll.

  21. IMO Misi wasn’t very good on the inside. Move him to the outside and let him, Jordan, McCain all compete. Draft an inside linebacker and of course we have Jenkins on the outside who has shown promise. Sometimes I wonder how Coyle and Philbin got their jobs because they make easy decisions difficult.

  22. Misi should be in the middle. He did very well when he wasn’t injured. Defense did well when he was out there.

Jenkins is solid and Jordan should play the other side.

The group needs to stay injury free and we’re fine.

Coyle needs to go. He gets outcoached consistently. Always rushes 3 and plays conservatively when you need pressure on the QB.
