Jason Licht gushes about Jameis Winston’s Pro Day workout

If the Buccaneers already were planning to pick quarterback Jameis Winston with the first overall pick in the draft, nothing that happened during the player’s Pro Day workout changed the team’s position.

If anything, the Bucs are even more determined to draft Winston.

“Very good. Excellent. Had a great day,” G.M. Jason Licht said regarding the workout, via JoeBucsFan.com.  “This was outstanding.  He threw a full nine innings.”

Licht said Winston displayed sufficient strength and endurance to end talk about whether he’s in shape.

“He showed his arm strength to throw No. 1 to throw 100 and whatever it was,” Licht said, adding that he was most impressed with Winston’s “leadership and arm strength and conditioning.”

The Buccaneers could, in theory, work out a contract with Winston and make him the first overall pick at any time.  It now appears to be a matter of time until that happens.

  1. Way to sell it to your fan base. Last year Tampa won the Free Agency award this year they pick first. Winston will be a bust, but the Bucs are afraid to go in a different direction.

  2. This is Great Jason, but how are we supposed to believe you know what your talking or gushing about… Your Not schooled on the intracacies of the QB Position.

  3. Why do people always mix sports metaphors?

‘He threw a full nine innings.’ Of what, footballs?

    Stupid way to talk.

  4. Winston could end up being a bust. However with the way the NFL rules are now you have to gamble when you have a chance to snag a potential franchise star QB. In today’s NFL you are not going to consistently compete without one.

  5. Leadership: The act of leading a group of people or an organization. Maybe I don’t understand everything that goes on at a “Pro Day” but how did Jameis exhibit “leadership” at this?

  6. What would you expect him to say? They are so locked in on him at this point, there is no room to escape. If they pick him and he busts, they can say everyone thought he would be great. If they don’t pick him and he has a HOF career, they’ll get drilled. Leonard Williams should be the pick but they don’t have the cohones to pull the trigger.

  7. “He threw a full nine innings making him a slam dunk to be our first pick. We’re looking to go on the power play with him at the helm and end up in the winner’s circle….”

  8. Absolutely GREAT! So you build him up.. make him look fabulous and ten ….. trade away the first pick for more than you could have otherwise. Smart move!

  9. “Great! Incredible! Very impressed! He bowled a perfect 300!” says Jason Licht

  10. Impressed with Arm Strength? Every one of these QB’s has a strong arm… I would be more concerned with touch and accuracy and completeing passes on time… shows little Jason Knows about things. I feel bad for Mike Glennon

  11. Draft should be easy for Bucs F.O

If you like a player -> Don’t draft him

5 Probowl/Allpro players drafted by Tampa in 15 years.

    On Last 117 players drafted.

WR Evans, OLB David, DT McCoy and CB Talib are the only players worth it.

Jameis Winston is an upgraded version of Josh Freeman but will end up the same

  12. Why take this guy number 1 when you are the only team that is interested in this thief. Why not trade down and take the thief 15 or 20 and still have another first in a trade

  13. Wow, completing easy passes in a scripted environment is really impressive……not. He has to play against nfl competition, and win/succeed at it before we can judge him. (See Bridgewater last year). If Winston can have even half the impact Teddy did, he might turn out ‘ok’.

  14. Keep in mind. If the Bucs want to trade out of the first pick, they need to be strong on Winston. If the Bucs were sold on Winston, it would make more sense to temper enthusiasm to get a better contract deal. The remark seems to indicate the Bucs want to trade out for more pics.

  15. When will these people learn? Those flashy, college QB’s that can’t decipher pass coverage don’t work in the NFL. Even worse, those with similar qualifications and mildly perceived elusiveness are even worse.

A small amount of success and then defensive coordinators swallow them. Think RGIII, E.J. Manuel, Colin Kaepernick….just the most recent. And Teddy Bridgewater, he’s next.

Remember when Charlie Batch was a future difference-maker in Detroit? No different from all of these guys….and Winston falls in line.

  16. Trade it you idiots! Get a boatload of picks ! These guys will both fail miserably ! Let the jets take this bum!

“He threw a full nine innings.”
    SMH

You realize he’s reffering to the 102 balls he threw at the pro day right? You know, the same amount of pitches it may take to throw 9 innings. SMH.

  18. “…Licht said, adding that he was most impressed with Winston’s “leadership and arm strength and conditioning….”

How was Licht able to determine “leadership” with just a few hours of Winston throwing a ball?

And, I like how Licht has to come out and make note of Winston’s “conditioning” when it’s apparent to anyone with two eyeballs that he’s no gym rat?

Sounds like a used car salesman trying to convince a buyer that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this vehicle…

You mean that better contract deal that is already slotted???

Where have you been the last 3 years?

  20. I’ll take a motivated gym rat over a “prototypical” prima donna any day.

  21. Flabby is overrated.

Look at Brady and his flab. He will have to learn how to deflate balls with the ball boy however since he doesn’t have the grip strength required by the rest of the NFL.

    #GoNiners #NobodycanpossiblyhaveitbetterthanUS

    —————–

What does no body has it better even mean?

The niners have not won the super bowl since the 90’s. Their franchise is in chaos and their QB is one more bad season from being cut.

  23. Honest question — is there any history of a college QB with questionable character “incidents” subsequently succeeding on and off the field in the NFL?

  24. @ purple guy – there are tons of examples.

Most recent is Cam Newton who had multiple incidences in college and has been a model citizen since being drafted #1 overall. That wasn’t even long ago dude lol

I seem to remember some guy named Dan Marino dropping in the draft due to ‘character concerns’…

Brett Favre turned out OK. Namath too.

  27. I predict bust. He doesn’t have the character and work ethic of Teddy Bridgewater.

    ———————————————————

Peyton Manning had problems in college. Google it.

  29. The Bucs need to reverse the trend and make sure they get a guy that can play well enough to actually earn a second contract…something they have yet to do with any of their QB picks in franchise history

  30. Washington and LA Coach George Allen used the phrase, “Hit a Home Run” all the time and when asked about it said that the home run was sports greatest play.

  31. Also, one time when George Allen was asked how he was going to stop Dallas’ fearsome pass rush he replied, “Land mines.”

  32. JaMarcus Russell wows scouts at LSU’s pro day

One coach in particular — new Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin — could not take his eyes off the 6-foot-6, 256-pound Russell.

“Obviously, I’m very impressed,” Kiffin said. “We were very impressed. He had a great day. He seems very first class, very easy to get along with. No doubt he was a great leader here. That’s why everybody wants him now.”

  33. Coach George Allen used the phrase, “Hit a Home Run”

Allen was a moron. He was the Dick Vermiel of his day, with less actual football smarts.

There’s something about your list, I can’t quite put my finger on it, But Like thAt feeling that one knows when something isn’t right. I’m Confident you Know what I’m referring to, I spelled it out for you.

  35. Bucs are a graveyard for any player rookie or not. Jason Licht will bury this team. Hey how did the Mankins trade work out Licht ?

This kid is Vince Young part two. Add to that can someone tell me the last time Lovie Smith and good offense were remotely connected

  36. ymca2014 says: Mar 31, 2015 6:42 PM

Looks similar to Doug Williams. I think Lovie Smith would settle for that career.

    _____________________________________

I’d bet most, if not all NFL coaches without a Super Bowl ring would ‘settle’ for that career.

  37. Wow, completing easy passes in a scripted environment is really impressive……not.

@sharrerwwonka22: 1991 called. They want their “not” punchline back.

  38. Let’s see how he is under the bright lights and daily grind of the NFL. What modern-day QB has succeeded in the NFL that has character issues? None I remember.

  39. Damn..if I was Bucs fan I would just stop watching for as long as this guy is your G.M. For him to say JW’s pro day was ‘outstanding’ means he is not a good evaluator of talent. So now you have an awful coach, an awful G.M. and soon to be constant headache in JW. That’s gotta suck. I’m not sure any team is picking QB in the top 20 so if this is just a smoke screen and they are passing..it makes sense why JW and MM are staying home. They have gotten word they won’t be drafted high and don’t want the embarrassment of sitting in the green room.

  40. Could be a smokescreen to draw interest of other teams making them an offer to trade down, I mean this teams is not just a franchise qb away from competing. If they can accumulate multiple picks they can get better faster that way. Especially if you are not 100 percent on this guy which IMO NOBODY can say they are all in on this guy. Just too many red flags, especially today with him showing up like he has been laying around the house playing madden and eating Doritos.

Flashy? Say what you really mean. RGIII and Kaepernick, I’d give you but Manuel, Winston, and Bridgewater were all pocket QBs coming out of pro style offenses.

  42. I’m sorry but a lot of you on here are idiot haters! Winston showed some of the greatest anticipation throwing, ever (Todd Mcshay). He came out and showed that his very coach able and a quick learner by shorting his throwing motion yesterday. You know it was legit because he didn’t have easy scripted workout like a lot of this QBS do, they had him throwing off balance and making him readjust his feet quickly but still kept that short motion in delivery.
So please ignorant haters, go away or better yet keep hating because this kid doesn’t care. It will do nothing but fuel him.

The opposite of what was said on NFL radio.

    ———————————-

Yep. No one on NFL radio was impressed and several different hosts and guests cited him being inaccurate, having sloppy footwork, being slow, and not looking good at all when he rolled out of the pocket.

Of course everyone has different opinions, but this sounds like the Bucs are throwing up a smokescreen.

Can’t help but notice how All those QB’s you mention all have something in common, yet you fail to include Russell Wilson winning a SB and coming within a Dumb Play call from winning another. But that would of kind of destroyed your Straw Man hypothesis.
Remember when Charlie Batch was a future difference-maker in Detroit? No different from all of these guys….and Winston falls in line.

  45. What most people fail to realize is that no QB is solely responsible for his teams success or failure. Steve Young was a bust at Tampa Bay. Marino and Fouts never won SBs. What Wilson and Kaepernick had/have is great defense and solid running games. When those are gone (see Kaepernick last year) those QBs are exposed.

You can’t make up for poor defense and poor running with a gimmicky QB option or uptempo. But with a top defense and a solid running game even Russell Wislon, Trent Dilfer or Ben Roethlisberger could win a SB.
