Ravens get Schaub for a mere $2 million base deal

AP

Quarterback Matt Schaub has made plenty of money over the years for playing quarterback at a good but not great level.  In 2015, he’ll make pretty good money by, ideally, not playing at all.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Schaub’s deal with the Ravens has a base value of $2 million, with $1 million to sign and a $1 million salary.  Contrary to a report that the deal is worth $3 million, the final $1 million comes from extra amounts — amounts that will be difficult for Schaub to earn if he’s not playing.

Given that Schaub will be backing up a guy who has started every game of his eight-year career, it’s unlikely that Schaub will unlock any payments based on playing time.

Based on the relative performances of Joe Flacco and Matt Schaub in recent years, the Ravens and their fans surely hope that won’t be happening.

  1. Considering he attempted, ATTEMPTED, 10 passes last season and was picked off 2 times I don’t think the words “mere” and “2 million dollars” are applicable here.

  2. A mere $2 million? I doubt you get paid that much to hold a clip board too, Florio.

  3. He’ll have to WIN the back-up job in training camp.

When he’s “only” getting 2 million… It’s easy to let him go if Keith Wenning wins the job.

But it would just be too ironic that Ravens finally have to use their back-up this year now that they don’t really have one.

  4. I wish I could be a backup Kicker in the NFL. American dream, Brazilian version. Too bad teams keep one Kicker through the season. Next dream: being a MLS role player

A kicker making 2-4 million a year is.

  6. At least Schaub is someone people have heard of How many people can name Aaron Rogers or Roethlisberger’s backups?

  7. Florio has the best gig in America. Making serious jack for writing about football

  8. I remember watching Schaub during that 2013 year and preseason last year and he’s not worth the veterans minimum.

There’s a tad more stress involved there. Just a tad.

  10. What happens in camp when the Ravens staff realize Schaub is better than Flacco. At 1/10th the price

  11. based on the Ravens’ pay grades for position/talent, he should make $20.5M/yr.

  12. Pay Matt Schaub $2M a year to be a backup at this point in his career? I wouldn’t pay him $200k. After some very good years as the Texans QB, Matt Schaub had the biggest meltdown I have ever seen a pro quarterback make 2 yrs ago. He simply cannot play anymore.

As several here have said, backup QB in the NFL has to be the best job in the world. Better than kicker. A kicker can be run into and injured. Chances are Schaub won’t get hurt unless he gets his pinky finger caught in the clipboard spring.

The only people that think that were the ones that had him on their fantasy football team around 2009. Watch some real football, buddy.

  14. Good thing Flacco has only missed one snap in his CAREER due to injury. Can’t really say the same about Softlisberger can we? And I wonder who makes more money…. (hint: it’s the rap-artist)

  15. What a steal for the Ravens.

Last year Schaub received $7 mill for being the place holder for the Raiders.

$2 million to hold for a lot more extra points and field goals. Forget about it.

  16. I don’t care who’s holding the clipboard as long as Joe is under center. We’re lucky to have Flacco and let’s hope we have him for 10 more years.

    Success is relative. Apparently.

  18. In preparation for backing up Flacco he’s already started growing in his unibrow.

  19. The scrub circus has left town. This guy may have been better than some teams have as a starter now.

  20. Realistically, what other options does any team have that needs a back up? Mike Vick? After the RR thing, Ravens are not going there. Plus he’d be a little more costly. Schaub may have been the best of bad options left.

Schaub did lose it. Hopefully, knowing from the beginning he will be a back up will relax him enough to get straightened out. At least he has experience.

Also, I am not convinced from what I saw, that Tyrod Taylor would be any better. And let’s face it, any team when their primary goes down, will have a tough time not missing a beat. The Ravens are no exception to that, whether now or in the past.

  21. Good landing spot for him IMO. You cant take what you see in Oakland too seriously. Guy can still play he just isnt a starter anymore.
