Bears sign Sam Acho

The Bears brought in a new defensive coordinator this offseason when Vic Fangio signed on to head coach John Fox’s first Chicago staff and that’s expected to mean a move toward the 3-4 base look that both men favored in previous stops.

On Wednesday, they added a player with experience in such schemes. The Bears announced they have signed former Cardinals outside linebacker Sam Acho to a one-year deal.

Acho was a fourth-round pick by Arizona in 2011 and made a splash as a rookie with seven sacks and four forced fumbles in 16 games. Acho added four more sacks while making 16 starts in his second season, but missed most of 2013 with a broken leg and contributed just one sack to the team’s pass rush.

The Bears signed Pernell McPhee to go with holdover options LaMarr Houston, Shea McClellin and Jared Allen on the edges of the defense. Acho will work his way into that mix as well and the Bears will determine how all the pieces fit once they start their offseason program.

  1. Jared Allen is a 4-3 defensive end. I feel bad for him having to try a 3-4 at this point in his career. he had the potential to break the season sack record if paired opposite a good end on the other side. Now, who knows

  2. Everyone on this roster has a 1 year deal except the guy (Cutler) all of Chicago wished had 1 year left….

  3. As a Packer fan, I’m looking forward to seeing how the Bears gel, in light of all the changes to the coaching staff as well as personnel moves. Dying to find out if Jay will be the starting QB.

  4. Really liking how the new regime has managed their defensive rebuild here in the pre-draft months by strategically bringing in front-7 guys like McDonald, McPhee, and now Acho.

Ultimately of course the Bears will need to draft and develop their own young talent at all of those positions – and NT remains a blinding, glaring gap – but bringing aboard solid veterans who are familiar with 3-4 schemes and come from winning organizations is absolutely the way to go in navigating the 2-3 years of transition this D is facing.

  5. The one thing I enjoy on this year, we’re not expected to do much. All of the talent we keep acquiring is going to have a chip on their shoulder with the ability to surprise people. If we can stop 50+ scores and limit Cutler’s pics, we might have something.

That man has never played his position since he entered the league as a 3-4 outside linebacker. Started as a DE, played 4-3 linebacker last year. Now moving him inside. If fails at this one, his next move has to be the unemployment line.

  7. Good signing by the Bears. They’re getting a solid player and probably didn’t have to pay a whole lot. As the article points out, Sam Acho has had some injury issues, but when healthy he is a smart and steady player, a leader, and a great all around guy.

  8. @Ragnarthegreat – Did you forget about Julius Peppers always being a 4-3 DE and he did just fine as an OLB with the Packers last year. If you are an All-Star athlete, you can handle a change in position like the one Allen is going to make. It is not like he is being moved from DE to CB. DE in a 4-3 and an OLB in a 3-4 have many of the same responsibilities. I think Allen will be just fine this year and only suffered last year because of his bout with pneumonia.

Shea doesn’t have it, period. When he tried to bulk up to play DE as a rookie he lost all his speed, and then last year when he dropped weight he got run over. He has terrible instincts in the run game and can’t play in coverage at all. I had a bad feeling about him (and our new-at-the-time GM Phil Emery) when his name was announced at the podium and I tried to stay hopeful but it’s pretty clear he’s not cut out for the NFL and I will be shocked if he makes the 53 this season.

  10. A awful lot of One Year deals: Not a bad thing if your just trying to compete next season. Which I’m sure they are trying to do. But, we all can’t wait to see who and how their draft turns out. That will be a real clue to the future. Can’t wait to see Pace’s plan.

  11. Was planning to come to Chicago for the draft, but try getting a hold of the NFL for tickets. Total fan disrespect. They only care about money.

  12. One of the nice guys in football… Outstanding citizen and Chicago will enjoy… Good off the bench guy not a starter

  13. “Jared Allen has the best pass defense stats out of the linebackers.”

Too bad he’s never played linebacker, and those are career stats.

  14. “Dying to find out if Jay will be the starting QB.”

Then R.I.P., as even Stevie Wonder can see Cutler will be their QB. Are you seriously wondering if he will?

  15. kabasaman….NFL is classless and disrespectful to its fan base… They know that they can survive without ticket holders and it shows… Living in PHX I saw first hand the SUPERBOWL BS…

There’s an Online lottery someplace for the Draft itself, and they’re using almost all of Grant Park for some Fan Extravaganza, try this one – NFL.com/DraftTown ….all it means to me is my Commute is going to be a hassle for a couple of weeks!!!
