Report: Browns barely even discuss Manziel in planning offense

As the Browns sat down early this offseason to figure out where to go with their offense following the departure of coordinator Kyle Shanahan, one name was an afterthought: Johnny Manziel.

That’s the word from Chris Mortensen of ESPN, who says that when the Browns started putting together their new offense under new coordinator John DeFilippo, Manziel didn’t seem to be part of the equation.

“I think about 90 percent that they have moved on [from Manziel] in their own minds except that they really don’t know who they’re going to get when Johnny leaves rehab, which has been an extended stay — a two-month stay,” Mortensen said, via the News-Herald. “He should be getting out some time in the first week of April if they’re satisfied that he’s ready to go out and get into society and that whatever deep-rooted problems that he had has been addressed. The bottom line is that Johnny Manziel’s future with the Browns has been in question. When they were putting together half of a new offensive staff, Manziel’s name barely even came up in conversation.”

Ordinarily, if a team is hiring a new offensive coordinator a year after spending a first-round draft pick on a quarterback, there’s nothing more important for the team to know than the coordinator’s plans for that quarterback. If DeFilippo has no plans at all for Manziel, that’s a very bad sign for his future with the franchise.

But from all indications, the Browns currently consider Josh McCown their starting quarterback. And the Browns may even try to add another quarterback, like Sam Bradford or Marcus Mariota. Manziel looks like little more than an afterthought.

  1. Super bummed Browns opted out of Hardknocks. Really interested to see what the stint in rehab will do for Johnny Football.

Will he come out Tim Tebow 2.0

*personality wise of course, because Tebow actually had success in the NFL.

  2. Manziel’s skill set is one that dictates an offense be built around it. He is all over the backfield and needs mobile O-liners.

If he isn’t in the planning that speaks louder than it would for other teams / QBs with no clear-cut starter on the roster.

    9-6-4

  3. packer fans will tell you the browns are in better shape with manziel as their quarterback then the vikings are with teddy bridgewater as theirs. seriously.

  4. And these dopes took this short, noodle armed nutjob what, 17th overall? 20th overall? Whatever it was.

This isn’t hindsight either, I called this guy being worth no more than a 4th round pick, and I did it from my couch with a bowl of popcorn in my hands. Tebow too. Mindboggling the thought process of some of these NFL teams who dedicate every waking moment of their lives to football yet still botch a draft pick this badly.

With other QB flameouts like Brady Quinn or Matt Leinart, at least there were certain measurables you could hang your hat on when evaluating them.

  5. I thought moving on from a quarterback after two bad seasons was a quick hook, but two quarters, man the Factory of Sadness just keeps on churning.

  6. Why should they? He’s a bust for sure. Obviously Evans made his slop ball look good in college. You could have had Bridgewater…

  7. You can only makes plans with the people you have, and Manziel whether its at Manning QB camp, or making it work so he can rehab his late season injury.

Maybe making plans and then if Manziel can make it good for him, but I don’t blame Cleveland for not putting all their eggs in one basket.

  8. kinda like how they barely talked to the Browns draft expert who urged them to stay away from Manziel!

  11. It was only last summer when the entire NFL world revolved around Manziel and Sam. Barrels of internet ink spent on non entities.
    .

  12. IF he has cleaned up his act. Maybe Seattle should pick him up as a back-up, or better yet, maybe one of their division rivals. Place him on the practice squad. Last time I checked, Seattle had a pretty mobile QB. Hope the best for this guy, addiction his a tough thing to beat…

  13. This guy obviously has some demons and as a human I’m glad he’s addressing them seriously, but you can’t fault the team from moving forward without him in their immediate plans. There just isn’t enough time in the offseason, camps and such to hope a guy is ready. Once he gets his life right, I hope he continues on with his career, if not in Cleveland then somewhere else that will provide him support. Guy never cheated, beat or shot anyone nor harmed me personally, so I have no ill will towards him or the Browns for taking the risk and propping him up when their gamble failed.

  14. Johnny will be fine! He took care of his off field issues and now will come back super strong! All good in Browns town!

  15. If he eats another Snickers, he might be able to get his workout instructor job back.

  16. So basically… They wasted another high draft pick.

All those Dallas fans that jumped ship because Jerry didn’t draft Manziel… How are you feeling right now?

  17. Hey remember that Patriot scouting report that someone (Lombardi) leaked right before the draft???

Remember the Browns fans blasting Lombardi for that and trying to trade Gordon before he got suspended???

What was it you brilliant Browns fans were calling Lombardi again???

Meanwhile Lombardi is about to get a shiny new championship ring and the Browns are still the Browns…

    …Good luck with that…

  18. He has played what, all of 8 quarters and you are moving on? Shouldn’t you at least give him four full games to see if your first round pick has a shot?

Amazing that he is done with hardly even a tryout.

  19. Bashing a 22 year old kid who chose to spend his offseason in rehab to save himself instead of traveling the world and partying like he could have is childish. I bet Dallas makes a trade for him. They need a young QB, you know Jerry still wants him and that’s where Manziel wanted to be in the first place.

  20. You know your career has gone south when Josh McCown is the starter and the team is forgetting you even exist.

  21. Thank God!! I wanted Watkins and Carr…I’m still ticked about that. And there’s no way any Browns suit should accept a trade for Bradford without a contract extension including performance incentives tied to games played. He’s a free agent in ’16 and hasn’t proven any kind of durability to warrant guaranteed money. If those conditions are met, I’d have no problem with a trade to Philly so they can trade up to take Mariota, which everyone knows Chip Kelly wants to do. Failing that…give Connor Shaw a shot!!! He’s a whole lot better than Manziel.

  22. @vicnocal you and just about everybody else. Don’t dislocate your shoulder patting yourself on the back. You basically had the common line.

  23. And yet, Manziel’s still accomplished more in the NFL than Jadeveon Clowney has.

  24. I feel sorry for Johnny. I think he has a good heart and loves football but hes just a people pleaser and a yes man. Doesn’t know when to say no. He probably doesnt have any real friends to help him out. All his friends are celebrities who use him for publicity.

  25. He has barely seen the field and everyone insists that he’s a bust and a lost cause.

I’m not sure why the masses continue to always want to crucify people before they’ve been given an actual chance.

  26. I don’t believe the Browns actually sit down and plan stuff. They just throw poop at a fan and hope it works out.

  27. Dear Browns Management. Take a page from Seinfeld’s George Costanza…..Do the opposite. Make a decision and do the opposite. As a Steeler fan, I hate to give you the correction you need to right the ship, but you so pathetic.

  28. for all the rotten luck the Browns have had they should get a re-take on him

  29. edavidberg says:

I have no idea why the Browns are so enamored with Bradford. At that salary he’s not worth a first rounder. Not even close.

    —-

Probably because he’d be the best QB they’ve had in who knows how long, they don’t have the ability to draft one, and they don’t have the ability to develop one.

  30. “Report: Browns barely even discuss Manziel in planning offense”-It’s wise not to build your offense around someone in rehab!

  31. Chip Kelly is just waiting for Manziel to get out of rehab. Then he will trade Bradford for Manziel straight up.

  33. Another college QB hyped up by the media seriously the media puts these guys on a pestal and it goes to their head. It’s time for all these college QBs to hold a clipboard for at least a year … how I miss the old days when real men played football.

  34. This kid was just another pampered, I’m-better-than-everyone spoiled brat. He’s not some tragic figure who turned to drugs to deal with a hard life…he’s someone who became deviant because life was too easy.

Anyone who feels sorry for Johnny Hasbeen is wasting their good emotions on a bad person.

  35. @imsorryyoufeelthatway7
Is this the FIRST you are noticing that every single post on PFT is eventually invaded by a packer troll needing to take a shot at the Vikings? REGARDLESS of the topic of the post? Its been aggravating me for about a year now…

  36. Hope Johnny gets his life together. He will not be in the poor-house no matter what anyway.

At best I thought he would be Doug Flutie.
At worst I thought he would be gone after a few years attempting to learn being a QB.

I never thought it would be this short, but for his life, it might be the best.

    Green Bay had it’s Mandarich
    Vikings had Dimitrius Underwood
    Pats had Tony Eason
It happens to the best and worst teams and all inbetween.

Hope the Browns find a real QB

  37. The Browns being the Browns. A Div-III college team would be more competitive.

  38. The Browns need to seriously consider retiring that #2 jersey. It is obviously cursed. Whoever wears it for them becomes an instant bust.

Courtesy of factory of sadness records….

  42. Johnny Manziel arrived in the NFL last year and found out he really wasn’t Johnny football. He will rank up there with Ryan Leaf as one of the all time first round NFL busts. And Cleveland will continue its dysfunctional search for yet another QB that they can destroy with their toxic franchise.

  43. ohand16 says: Apr 3, 2015 7:23 PM

Trade him to the Bills for their 2016 1st

Just a reminder: Nobody would trade Sammy Watkins for Justin Gilbert and this year’s 19th pick.

    No one.

  44. Wow, stomp him in the dirt everyone. He’s got a couple of years to possibly turn into the next Drew Brees, Doug Flutie or perhaps a bust. It’s too early to write him off-the boy has talent.

  45. He’s far worse than J Russell and Ryan Leaf combined. Lol! So happy my Raiders got Carr and not this bum. He should have never won the hiesman that year either, should have went too Collin Kline

  46. 1st of all, Teddy! Teddy! Teddy! 2nd of all, Johnny might still end up being a good QB.
    Thirdly,
    imsorryyoufeelthatway7 says:
This has nothing to do with anything, but why have the Vikings and Packers rivalry trickled into a thread about Manziel?
Well you see, Packer fans feel a sense of entitlement, that everything is about them. On top of that I think they feel threatened by the Vikings and they’re fans.
Most Viking fans are just very happy we didn’t get stuck with Manziel. I think we almost did…so this article has something to do with us. Packer fans only clicked on it to troll us Viking fans.

  47. Johnny Bench (after all, its still Ohio, close enough).

Wow, can the Browns draft in the first round or what?? They had two recent drafts with two picks in the first round and have nothing to show for them, not a serviceable player in the bunch. Richardson, Weeden, Manziel, Gilbert. Trash, no talent, drunks and addicts. Yep, quite a haul there.

The Cleveland Browns, where football careers go to die.

  48. This says as much about the Browns as it does Johnny football. What a cluster of 1st round picks they have had…Tim Couch, William Green, Kellen Winslow,Brady Quinn, Trent Richardson, Brandon weeden, bark mingo, now Gilbert and JFF…. Just fold

  49. The Browns have not revealed anything about their 2015 offense in any way…they signed a veteran QB who is age 35 to be a mentor to a 22 year old Quarterback… John Manziel is a Heisman Trophy winner… Let him play one full season as an NFL starter… If he does not show he can win and play well in the NFL after a full season then pull the plug… Give the young man a chance…stand by him… Don’t make hasty decisions…be patient… That is how you turn the organization around is by being loyal to the players you drafted…giving them a chance… Just Do It !

  50. somebody in that organization really despises this kid, or, its beat reporters are making stuff up. these days, you cant really tell ever

  51. Everyone keeps talking about his off the field issues. DID YOU SEE HIS ON THE FIELD ISSUES? I’m surprised he wasn’t cut after that Cincy game. He can’t play in the NFL at all.

  52. This time last year Manziel was the most talked about player in the draft. It’s not even a full year later and he’s a nobody. Go figure.

  53. Mort’s reports are so lame. There is zero chance Manziel isn’t first and foremost on their minds this offseason. You don’t go decades without a legit franchise QB…finally draft one and then forget about him. So many tools thinking they are cute tearing him down. He is leaps and bounds a better QB prospect than Crab Legs Winston..though..maybe the wrong color for you haters right?

  54. Different offense different story, look how Mark Sanchize worked out for Philadelphia after he supposedly was an “also ran/bust/toast” ??? Have an OC with the courage to build around the guys strengths and you might have an all-together different story. Johnny plays a couple of quarters and is labeled a bust? Not buying it, he was good enough to get there and after rehab he should be a better product not a worse one. Someone should give the man a shot, hell the Browns are where QB’s go to die along with OC’s and HC’s. All around bad policies time and time again, no real direction and the owner is a tool too ! Do you really think that if as a rookie Tom Brady had been drafted by the Browns that he would “still” be there and flourishing?? C’Mon Man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  55. Manziel is actually one player that should go to the CFL and play. He would be a much better fit there with the wider field for his style of play compared to the running back Tim Tebow who occasionally throws a good forward pass. The other bonus is the glare of ESPN(TMZ of sports) will not follow him down there and he can live is life and play his game in peace without the constant paparazzi style journalism that comes with being a NFL QB.

  56. Johnny is a train wreck. There is a reason his parents dumped him off at A&M and told the football staff he was now their problem.
He is now the Brown’s problem for the next 12 months. He will be a full time reality TV star after holding a clipboard and probation papers during the 2015.

  57. So last off season we were all bothered by this guy not taking football seriously and saying if he doesn’t get his head straight and stop partying he will flame out and bust.
This season he has essentially said ‘you are right, I’ve got a problem’
So he is trying to fix things. He is well past the typical rehab stint. Where if it were all for show he could point to it and say ‘see I’ve changed and did rehab.’ But he is still there.
I’d rather give him a second chance over Rice, Hardy and even AP.
Is he a good enough QB? Maybe not, but it would be fun to see him run around and try. So I’ll root for him to get that chance.
I agree with the mention of Seattle above, a back up there. Philly too.
But also as the guy stated above, Flynn was the starter in April and Seattle ended up starting a rookie who wasn’t even on the team to talk about when planning the offense.
And he’d only gave to beat out McCown or step in when he shows he is done.

  58. @campcouch; How can you not fault the Browns for taking this risk?? Did you become a football fan yesterday? I know this would never happen, but this team should be given to the most loyal fan base in the NFL! I went to just about every Baltimore Colts game as a kid in the late ’70s and early ’80s. The place was empty when they stunk. Pittsburgh, with all their fans, plays in empty stadiums when they begin to smell! Not Cleveland. They just keep coming! What a travesty.

    _______________________________

Mark Sanchez??? Really??? That’s you’re “go to” move? The dude was 4-4 with 14 TDs, 11 INTs, and 7 fumbles last year. Not exactly the pinnacle of achievement.

  60. Cleveland is not giving up on him, Johnny is a very immature 22 year old. but think, he came into league at age of 21. How ready was he? he bypassed last two years of college which would have aided in maturation process. Johnny has been handed everything to him his hole life, he was expecting the same with the QB job…

  61. The Browns sure can pick-em. Although its unfortunate that Jerry’s kid is running the show in Dallas, I would have loved to see Johnny Boy with a star on his helmet.

  62. The media blew this report.

The actual leak didn’t say they barely discussed Manziel…

It said that they think he’ll be a small part of their offense.

  63. Manziel was a wasted draft pick, just as Jameis Winston will be. They’re both head cases who are their own worst enemies.

  64. “packer fans will tell you the browns are in better shape with manziel as their quarterback then the vikings are with teddy bridgewater as theirs. seriously.”

If you truly believe that, then I urge you to immediately seek psychiatric help. Drinking all that paint thinner, as Packer fans tend to do, has obviously led to severe delusions and other disconnections from reality. Teddy Bridgewater will be a star in the NFL within two years. Manziel will probably be out of the league before then. And once Aaron Rodgers retires, the Packers will be back at the bottom of the NFC North where they belong. (Viking fans really do respect Rodgers, though we loathe the Packers in general.)

  65. you’d be a foolish coaching staff if you were to plan an offense around a player that is not in the building or hasn’t been in the building…you can;t rely on him (right now) at least…that would be planning your offense around a player in the draft that they haven’t picked yet.

I will dispute that they have “moved on” from him…i think it;s up for interpretation…moving on 90% would indicate they are 90% done with him or not giving him a chance…i would say they’re 100% “moving forward” as if he weren’t here or in the plans cuz he’s not…but when training camp comes around, and he displays ability, and performance, and behavior…then he’ll be back in the plans…100%.

  66. “He took care of his off field issues and now will come back super strong!”

Even taking a leap of faith and assuming that’s the case, there’s still one huge problem….Johnny Manziel is not an NFL quarterback.

    HERE WE GO!!!

The Browns are a franchise of sadness. Their REAL team left town. They have a lot of off the field problems on their roster and guys who play half speed not to get hurt. They haven’t won a Super Bowl. Owner is in a scandal. They talk a good game but can’t produce it on the field. Players stink. Fans are delusional about their team.

The Cleveland Clowns Organization from top to bottom and their fans will never change. The fans are jerks, the Organization is a bunch of losers. Good day to you all.

I can understand why you, as a Vikings fan, loathe the Packers.
    Thirteen championships for the Packers.
    Zero championships for the Vikings.
I’m glad you respect Rodgers. He is a classy guy and an excellent QB. I’ll tell you what we can do. Wait until he’s 40 and we’ll give him to your Vikings.
Your point about the Packers having to find another great QB after Rodgers is well taken. The Packers have had two great ones in a row and that’s tough to do. Very few teams have had the level of QB the Packers have had for as many years as the Packers have had it.
But one thing the Packers have been able to do is develop their QB’s. It’s because they have patience and don’t over react when things go wrong.
I’d list all the QB’s the Vikings have had since 1993 when the Packers got Favre and then moved on to Rodgers, but it would take me too long and I couldn’t possibly remember them all.
If the Vikings are smart, they’ll stay with Bridgewater. He looks like he can develop into a fine QB, to me.

  71. “Mark Sanchize worked out for Philadelphia after he supposedly was an “also ran/bust/toast” ???”

Sanchez proved nothing more than that he’s a capable backup QB. The same flaws that he had in New York showed up in Philly too.

  72. Until the Browns get the staff that can work with the players and teach the fundamentals, NFL style, it doesn’t matter who the Browns draft. The constant change over of the coaching “regimes” and their respective schemes hurt more than anyone can guess.

Meanwhile, stable teams can turn even UDFA into good to great players. They acquire and work with players that fit their scheme, not change the scheme every other year.

I had rightfully guessed that Manziel would not work out under Lil Shanny because of the differences in their games. Shanny does his daddy’s run-first game. I think Johnny would’ve done much better under someone like Norv Turner.

Colt McCoy should’ve been the perfect QB for Shurmur’s WC offense but, because he was Mangini’s boy, Shurmur refused to work with him. The same with Shanny and Manziel.

The same applies with the defense. 3/4 or 4/3 this year? I know CB Gilbert had some personal issues but, wasn’t his play in college different than how the Browns tried to use him? Look how LB) D. Jackson and S) TJ Ward did with their new teams.

So on and so on. Think of all the different regimes & schemes guys like K) Dawson, LT) Thomas, and even C) Mack have been through!

Now we have an owner who drafts based on jersey sales over talent.

Is it any wonder why players don’t want to come here to play, even with more money being offered?

  73. As a Browns fan, I’d rather hear that they are planning for next year without him — rather than making him the centerpiece of the offense while he’s still in rehab.

When he gets out, reevaluate, see what you have. Adjust, if appropriate. Proceed from there.

  74. Boy those were 2 great 1st round draft picks huh? And this is why this team has been horrible since 1999. Its not due to any curse like some fools believe.

  75. Fastest player to bust out of the league in NFL history? At least Leaf played a few games. Manziel spent his entire first season getting drunk, was thrown into two quarters of a game that he admittedly didn’t prepare for, and instead of spending his offseason preparing for next season, is spending it at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center.

And the worst part? We all saw it coming. All of us, except Browns ownership, Jerry Jones, and some not so prophetic homeless guy. Even if he was a model citizen and loved Jesus more than Tim Tebow, he was still a worse football prospect than Tebow, who was also a sub par prospect. As purely a football prospect, character issues aside, I would have considered him with a third round pick if I was a quarterback desperate team, fourth or fifth if I was anyone else. With the immaturity and alcoholism issues? Not even close to the draft board.

  76. Not signing Hoyer and then signing McCowan as your starter, now thats the biggest joke!

  77. Maybe if Gobriansipe knew who the Quarterback of the Browns is Josh McCown not McCowan you would show you know something anything about football or the NFL…

    McCown > Hoyer

Look at the stats overall and which player has won more games it is clearly McCown is the superior Quarterback…who was on a bad team last year…

People are so quick to write people off… Like 22 year old John Manziel is done when he would have been a senior coming out in this draft…he is doing all the right things…in life NOW…give the kid a chance…

  78. ““He should be getting out some time in the first week of April if they’re satisfied that he’s ready to go out and get into society and that whatever deep-rooted problems that he had has been addressed.”

    ———————————————————-
So much for the opinion that money solves everything. This young man’s family is filthy rich. Pappy is from oil money and they patented the “Johnny Football” term his freshman year in college.

Entitlement is a big issue with this young man. He was drafted first round and expected to walk in and take over the starting lead. The only “deep rooted issue” is he wasn’t considered the next great thing known to man once he got to the NFL level….

  79. John Manziel was born in 1992. Give him a break, he is a 22 year old young man, learning to play the elite pro game in the NFL the majority of QB’s aren’t ready their first year. Think about it…

  80. Hope they add Bradford and don’t pick Mariota and mess up his career because if your not goin to adapte to what he does best then your setting him up for failure.

As much as I wanted to agree… I just cant!

  82. Manziel was done, the day he entered rehab. The Browns are very wise to look to the future and forget about this greasefire. I just hope that the Browns learned from the disastrous mistake of drafting Manziel.

  83. I might be wrong, but I think McCown as the QB makes the Browns in the running for the first pick next year, when hopefully they can pick a QB. I think that’s a best case scenario. If you look at teams thats struggle year after year it’s for one reason, they don’t have a QB. The Browns tanking this year gives them their best shot at getting a QB next year. The colts lucked out when Manning got injured, imagine if Manning hadn’t got injured, they would now be saddled with an old, almost retiring QB, with no replacement in sight. Should be interesting to see what the Pats do with Brady.
