Report: NFL set to hire its first female game official

AP

Fridays of holiday weekends are generally for dropping bad news, but the NFL may be about to announce a groundbreaking one.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, the NFL has apparently hired its first female official, Sarah Thomas.

Thomas has been in the officiating pipeline for several years, and has been working at the college level while learning the NFL game.

She has worked camps and preseason games in the past, and technically wouldn’t be the first female on an NFL field, since Shannon Eastin worked a game during the replacement-ref era.

The league has had significant turnover in its officiating ranks in recent years, as they’ve tried to improve the part of the game which is practically built on human error.

But while new officials are a welcome addition, the addition of Thomas marks a milestone for a league too long bound by the old ways.

  2. I’m sure she’s more qualified than all the other candidates and this has nothing to do with political correctness or fair. Why not just put a transgender out there and call it macaroni.

  3. This isn’t basketball… NFL football is a very dangerous sport to stick a girl out there as a publicity stunt. I’m sure there are more qualified men for the job.

  4. Congrats for her….but aren’t lefties ALWAYS telling us that we should NOT judge a person by the color of their skin or by their reproductive anatomy…..so now all of a sudden it’s “oh a female is officiating a man’s game” blah blah.

This is a setup, if she performs poorly, she will be defended by the left solely because of her vagina. The left would never defend a male official.

  5. Sorry but this is dumb. I feel certain the NFL did this just to get some good PR. She better be good, unlike the female NBA refs that are a joke.

  6. I don’t care one bit about gender for refs, I just want to see refs that can run fast enough and see well enough to keep up with the game.
There may have been more turnover amongst the ref ranks in the last few years than is typical but that trend needs to continue. Too many ref crews have been too old, and/or too worried about their “grades” to be effective.
New blood! Don’t care much about the type of undies they are wearing.

  7. A female referee surrounded by rapists, murderers, alcoholics and drug users???

  8. She’ll have to inject herself with performance enhancing chemicals just to keep up with the game and to get in position to make a call.

What ever happened to the game I grew up watching? Back then, 70 year old Ben Dreith could even keep pace!

  9. As a woman who loves football and has watched the game for the last 25 years, I think this is great. If she is qualified, then she deserves to be on the field just like any male ref. I will still complain about the bad calls whether the ref is male or female.

  10. On the one hand, something about this rubs me completely the wrong way. In the reply booth, sure, but on the field… ehhhh.

On the other hand, she can’d do any worse than a lot of those old guys have been doing out there on the field for the last few years.

  11. Why are sports writers obsessed with “the first this” and the”first that”? If she’s the best for the job, then she should be hired and that should be it. And it shouldn’t be a big deal, in a negative OR a positive sense. Making a huge issue out of every difference between us artificially makes it just that…a huge issue.

  12. Only thing that matters in an official is competence.

I get why it’s news, just hoping she is competent.

Of course, if she’s not, she’ll fit right in with the current crop of officials.

  13. I’m sure this has nothing to do with trying to get back on the good side of the female demographic after the disaster that was last season. Nope, not at all.

Having said that, if she can ref then who cares. A good ref is a good ref, and the NFL sure could use more of those.

  14. if she can do the job then hire her

clearly they havent able to find enough qualified men, might as well cast the net a little wider and include others

  15. Great idea. Women at that level know the game and that’s what’s important

  16. As long as she’s qualified – great, she should be hired. Hell, how could she not be? The NFL sets a pretty low bar when it comes to officiating.

  17. As long as she’s being hired because she’s a great official, and not because she’s a she, I’m okay with it.

Thank goodness you have Rush and Hannity explaining the world through those ear phones every day or slinging those burgers for your woman boss may be unbearable.

  19. Taking a job from a more qualified person just because she’s a women. They don’t want to be treated the same !!! Or the most experienced. Giving a women a job just because she’s a women is just as bad as not giving her a job because she is a women

  20. I don’t give a damn what the refs gender is. Eyeballs, brains and the ability to move quickly are my only requirements.

So…believing that women have rights and can be treated the same as men makes one a “liberal”?

Does everything in your narrow view need to be divided into liberal vs. close-minded?

  22. So welcome to the 1980s NFL You’re only about 35 years behind where you should be.

  23. “congrats! Cannot wait to see all the qualified men who were passed over”

I wonder how many qualified women have been passed over? Gee, I also wonder how many refs who never played the game were passed over other refs who did play the game. While we are at it, how many qualified black refs were passed over by white guys before 1988 and even after that?

  24. Excellent, now someone will finally listen when I whine and cry about penalties.

    – Rodgers and Brady

  25. What’s with all the people who are so sure that loads of more-qualified men were passed over? Do you have access to some secret prospective ref grade report or something? It’s entirely possible that she is in fact qualified for the job, especially as she “has been in the officiating pipeline for several years.”

  26. don’t matter if they’re male or female, what matters is they finally hire full-time refs that give a s%%% about the job , and that they actually have good eye sight and dont miss calls like the fail mary.

  27. And Hardy is playing for the cowboys. The league has more issues than sports illustrated. I hope she was the most qualified person to be hired.

  28. If she gets a concussion after she unfortunately get caught under a pile of guys chasing after a loose ball that bounces towards her like Ron Winter, Roger Goodell will gladly reaffirm everyone that football has never ever been safer.

  29. What’s next, male cheerleaders?

The Ravens already employ legit male cheerleaders.

  30. A female should be able to do as good a job as a male referee. Too bad the NFL hasn’t found more qualified females to hire at the same time so that all the pressure wasn’t on just one person.

  31. At least she’s young enough that I don’t have to question her eyesight and ability to process what she just saw fast enough like most of the old guys jogging around out there.

And of course, this is all assuming the game isn’t scripted in the first place.

  32. the addition of Thomas marks a milestone for a league too long bound by the old ways.

  33. Hopefully she’s gay so that crop of terrorists doesn’t start making noise…

  34. NFL players can get pretty nasty and aggressive when a call doesn’t go their way.

The most aggressive testosterone filled athletic maniacs on the planet being officiated by a female.

This is a bad idea. Mark those words.

  35. SMH They really are trying to destroy professional football!

Hopefully the NFL will have come to its senses before Peyton Manning retires & I start watching again. ‪#‎Terrible‬

  36. Just what we need – – – another female (?) out there trying to prove she (it) is a man.

  37. She’s younger and pretty fit. That already makes her more qualified than the 50 year old guys who have 20/200 vision and wear coke bottle glasses. These guys can barely run 30 yards to keep up with the receivers.

  38. “td30 says:

Wow guys. The sexism in the comments and thumbs down/up is extremely depressing.”
    ==========================================

It’s not that surprising. Football is the second religion in the South. Just look at which side of the aisle most PFT readers are on: Pro-George Zimmerman, anti-Michael Sam, pro-Redskin name, pro-Rush Limbaugh, so many anti Obama comments, pro-Putin, pro Tebow because he’s an “outspoken Christian”, pro-gay discrimination in Indiana and Arizona, accusations of being “liberal”, etc.

It shouldn’t come to as a great suprpise that many of the readers are vehemently against a woman in a traditionally male dominated field. The predictable comments whining about her surpassing “more qualified male” candidates without any knowledge of who the people are is very telling about the Conservative mindset.

yeah because the old fat guys out there would hold up better.

  40. Well I for one will not be satisfied until exactly 50% of players, coaches, management, ownership and referees are members of the gentler sex. But this official plus Pete Carroll make a good start.

  41. Wait until she makes a call that one of the players doesn’t like and he goes off on her.

1st sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a Ref against a player in 3…2…1…

  42. Thomas resides in Brandon, Mississippi and is married with three children. She works as a pharmaceutical sales representative.

  43. Hopefully she was appointed on merit rather than because of her gender.

We will find out pretty quickly I guess.

  44. How many of you ref-haters have ever tried to officiate anything in your life? Do you have any idea how difficult it is to make these snap judgements in a game with the best athletes in the world in real time without the benefit of slow motion replay or multiple camera angles? The expectations fans place on the officials is just amazing and really needs to be adjusted for the reality of what they are dealing with. Maybe the wise use of technology will help us get things right more often.
Football is an emotional game and I get fired up when something goes against my Seahawks too, but having been a high school football official for 30 years at least gives me some empathy for what these guys (and gal) are dealing with.

    ________

Way to perpetuate a stereotype that has no basis in fact. Democrats push this “the right is anti-woman” BS for political gain and people like you fall for it. Sexism exists on both sides of the political aisle.

  48. As long as the ref does their job, I couldn’t care less what gender they are.

  49. She literally cannot be any worse than some of the officials last season. I still cant get over how Jerry Hughes got a 15 yard penalty on 3rd down for patting his own teammate on the helmet.

  50. next thing you know there will be a vagina rule saying that in order to hire a head coach or new ref, you must interview a woman first.
    seriously .
who gives a damn if shes got a vagina or not?
can she do the job? is she the best qualified person for the job?
    If so, then hire her.
If she is only getting the shot because she has a vag though, I am completely against it.
So sick of all the tokens. I don’t care what color you are, you should get opportunity based on your skill set, not what you were born with.

  51. The NFL thought it had a problem with domestic violence so they decided to bring it to the football field.

  52. Here is what will happen.

An NFL player or coach is going to say something to her that is pretty much the exact same thing they say to a male official. Jawing, basically…you see it in games all the time.

When it comes to light, it will illustrate to everyone how sexist players/coaches are and there will be a big blow up.

This will happen even if the statement made is exactly the same.

Mark it down this will happen.

  53. I just think it’s funny that the officiating has sucked so bad in recent years that the normally rock eating Neanderthal fan base that you’d think would haaaate this can’t do anything but shrug it’s shoulders and hope for the best.

    That’s positive I guess…

  54. No problem at all with this hire – IF she is the most qualified.

Problem is she jumped many male candidates that has more then twice her experience in the NCAA. Those males may never get the call, as age discrimination is alive and well in the hiring of NFL officials.

  55. with all the rules for QBs i cant believe we dont have a female QB in the NFL yet. I mean really if tom brady can do it than its very possible.

  56. (A female referee surrounded by rapists, murderers, alcoholics and drug users???)

I assume that you mean if she’s called to testify before congress at some point.

but seriously if she’s run over or knocked down by a football player does the player get suspended for 6 games or will he be put on the exempt list for a year.
It’s bound to happen at some point. The ESPN bobbleheads are gonna demand action after showing the replay over and over. “Oh yeah, He could have stopped, He had to have seen her, He did it on purpose, Fine him, Ban him from the NFL, Put him in jail!”

  57. Almost all of these comments (and thumbs up/down) prove why this is, indeed, a milestone hire.

  58. Some thoughts on this subject:
    — I hope she doesn’t announce she’s a lesbian. Not that I care what she is, it would just add to the publicity surrounding her and one Michael Sam fiasco is enough.
    — If I were her, I’d wear ear plugs until she gets used to the profanity she’s surely going to hear.
    — I have opined before that it’s amazing to me that womens’ groups haven’t pitched a fit before this that no women are officials or even coaches. After all, there’s always someone looking to start a fire somewhere.
    — If I remember right, a female worked as an official during the labor stoppage when the scab officials were brought in. So technically, this woman won’t be the first.
    — Finally, she has one thing going for her. That is that there are some really crappy male officials working NFL games already. So she can’t be any worse than they are.

  59. I hope her background showed her as a good ref and not mediocre. In other words, I hope she was not just hired because she’s a woman.

If she’s good then welcome to the team. If it’s just because she’s a woman then shame on the NFL.

  60. Fools. You think the NFL would hire a women if there
weren’t so many assaults on women in the news. Easy way to
deflect attention of the 204 season. And you’re falling for it.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++
Or maybe they have a very competent individual who they decided to hire regardless of gender. You going to say all the men are competent?

  62. The NFL, once again, going out of it’s way to appeal to everyone. I hope she’s competent and can avoid the collisions of NFL caliber lineman smashing into her because she’s too slow and fragile.

And I pity the first player that ever runs into her.

  63. As a woman, I find all the sexist comments on here appalling. I am willing to bet she will be one of the top officials. They have so many bumbling male refs working for the NFL. Gender should not have anything to do with it.

Ironically, you did the same thing, assuming all the whiners are conservative. I am a conservative, and a woman, and I’m thrilled about this. All of my comments stating such have gotten multiple thumbs down. The majority of the people on here are sexists. I don’t know how you assume they are conservative.

  67. as long as she’s not like 90 years old and can run faster then half of the old dudes that are out there now, bring her on

  68. Congratulations to her, I’d wager money that she’ll be a better referee than Jerome Boger.

I do want to see the first ejection she does, for her to get on the microphone and say “now I want you to think about what you’ve done”.

  69. One has to wonder how many of the males in this thread have ever met a woman, let alone lived with one. I’m guessing that number is small.

And Sarah Thomas knows there is a target painted on her back. I guarantee she knows the game (and the rules) better than any male currently in a NFL ref’s uniform.

  70. I’m sure she can do probably a better job than some of the idiots doing it now, it felt like this was one of the worst years for officiating that I can remember. I wish her well.

  71. It doesn’t matter to me one-way-or-the-other if there are female officials. This news doesn’t change the disgusting fact that for the longest time (several decades) the part-time NFL refs have been massively incompetent and until the entire system is changed with full-time accountable refs or the camera-system (which was shot down by Goodell) nothing has changed. Knowledgeable fans with common sense can see through the smoke-screen.

So what’s the over/under on how many games before she gets run over and taken out on a stretcher?

    **********************************

I bet she’s faster than most of the color blind refs on the field now

  73. Depending on her size it might be a bit more dangerous considering the fact that every once in a while a ref ends up being subject to an accidental big hit.
