Aaron Hernandez knew that beating NFL drug tests is easy

AP

Aaron Hernandez is an accused murderer, which makes the accusation that he was also a habitual marijuana smoker seem so trivial that it’s barely worth mentioning. But the testimony in Hernandez’s murder trial indicates that Hernandez was a regular pot smoker, and that he managed to smoke pot throughout his NFL career without ever failing an NFL drug test. And that raises a question: How did Hernandez beat the tests?

The answer is, fairly easily.

The NFL’s drug-testing program is really two programs: There’s the program for testing for substances of abuse and the program for testing for performance-enhancing drugs. The PED testing is stringent: Players are subject to unannounced testing all year long, and most players are tested several times over the course of a year. If you’re using PEDs in the NFL and you’re not getting caught, you have to be doing something pretty sophisticated to beat the tests.

But most players are only tested for substances of abuse once a year, before the season starts, and they knew the approximate time of their testing. As a source who was formerly affiliated with the NFL’s testing program told Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, Hernandez probably just stopped smoking pot when the testing was coming and then started up again as soon as he had submitted a sample.

“The most logical conclusion is he stopped smoking in June, passed his test in July, then smoked all he wanted for 11 months of the year,” the source said.

In other words, Hernandez knew that it’s easy to beat the NFL’s tests for substances of abuse: Stop using in time for drugs to clear your system, pass your one annual test, then start using again as soon as you’ve submitted your clean sample. Then you’re good to go until the next year, when you’ll have to get clean again, briefly, just until you’ve submitted your annual clean sample. The only exception is that players who are in the substance-abuse program are subject to additional testing. But Hernandez was able to avoid detection well enough to keep himself out of the program.

The NFL probably only tested Hernandez for marijuana four times: Once at the Combine before he was drafted and once during each of the three offseasons of his NFL career. Hernandez admitted before he was drafted that he had used marijuana while playing at Florida, but if he passed all of those NFL-mandated tests, he was free to smoke all he wanted the rest of the time, as long as he could get it out of his system in time to beat the next year’s test. Hernandez was probably tested for PEDs many times during his career, and those samples probably would have come up positive for marijuana if they had been tested for marijuana, but the PED test is separate from the marijuana test.

So if you’re an NFL player using recreational drugs, beating tests is easy, as long as you’re able to stop long enough to get the drugs out of your system. The policy is designed to catch those who have a drug problem so serious that they can’t or won’t stop even when they know the test is coming. Everyone else is free to use for most of the year.

  1. I think they all know how to beat the system. The ones that get caught are just dummies……

  2. Making sure your system is clean in time for a drug test is called passing the test, not beating it. Kind of like studying/preparing for a test helps you pass it. Beating a test implies that he would have still been smoking pot and found a way around it.

    “Hey man, how’d you beat that drug test?”

    “I abstained from drugs long enough for them to be cleared out of my system.”

    “Oh.”

  3. Eh, and who cares if they do? Smoking isn’t going to help any of these guys on the field. The only thing at risk here is their own paycheck when they slow down on the field or get busted for possessing it.

  4. It’s funny that the media is still trying to sell the idea that pot is a major drug. Just like the hand they had in making it illegal to begin with.

  7. If they did a surprise recreational drug test in the NFL, over 50% to 75% of the players would be suspended or in the program!

  8. Kind of stupid to still be testing for something that within ten years will be legal in the majority of states where NFL teams reside. Get ahead of the curve NFL and focus on testing for stuff that can impact the game on the field.

  9. All employers Should adopt this system that way like the article says you can catch the real addicts…I feel majority of population has or still does puffy the ganja, and those are the ones who fail surprise test with their jobs, which to me isnt fair cause u have people who only use crack, cocaine, herion etc and it only stays in their system long enough for the weekend to pass so these real drug addicts get away while the peaceful pot head gets canned!!! is it just me or is something wrong with that picture???

  10. Marijuana gives athletes a completely unfair advantage on the field, and the tests should be more stringent—-oh wait…they don’t, and no one cares.

    These drug tests are antiquated.

  11. This can’t be true. There is no way Hernandez chain smoked weed. Everyone one knows it is isn’t addictive and makes you mellow.

  12. If the Commisioner is serious about addressing marijuana, then maybe he should have random unannounced testing across the league. If he’s not serious about it, then scrap the whole substance abuse policy.

    ……………………
    Anything can be mentally addicting. I know plenty of folks thats are addicted. Maybe even me. Im not going to kill people for it, but I bet my garden has a good enough cycle to keep it steady flow for myself to smoke. Thats addicted buddy. And I know this. Step 1 is admitting. Im closer to recovery than you.

  14. If you can go a month with out smoking weed are you really addicted to it? He didn’t appear to be a zoned out space cadet. Probably used weed like most people use a cup of coffee. Killing people can be so stressful, nothing like a good smoke to calm the nerves afterwards.

  15. That’s not as easy as it sounds if you are smoking an ounce a day as Hernandez was supposedly

    I think smoking an ounce per day would be difficult.

  16. Hernandez should have smoked more Mary, maybe he wouldnt have murdered people.

    The drug you should be banging him on is the PCP / Angel Dust. I live in Boston and unfortunately that crap is all over our streets, and you can tell because it makes people really violent and psychotic. Anyone who has been on the Orange line after dark or anywhere on the Blue Line (where they are adding casinos… lol good luck with that) has probably run into a ranting psycho that made them switch cars.

    I really dont think the contents of a man’s urine should be used for anything other than a toilet, but if you’re gonna push the argument that illegal drugs are bad, at least test for the ones that should actually be illegal and cause problems

    ……and those that didn’t were just taught the basics by MDS.

    Sorry, but bad form PFT!

  18. You guys do realize that the substance abuse test is more than just for weed, right? They also test for other narcotics such as cocaine. Of course you knew other that or you wouldn’t be all indignant on your highhorse about testing for drugs

  19. So he’s smart enough to beat the pot testing but dumb enough to leave all types of evidence of murdering folks. Do you they let you smoke pot in jail?

  20. Yup the marijuana testing is ridiculous, especially when some players claim to use it to treat muscle cramping and nausea from prescription medicines. Also it’s a joke when Hernandez could do cocaine on Friday and pass a urine test on Monday yet if he smoked marijuana a week before he would fail it for a much lesser drug. Not a sermon just some truth LOL

  21. Yes I asked this question in a previous post and suspected that beating the Marijuana test was all about timing.

    In other words Aaron Hernandez could be scoring TD’s in a game for the Patriots and be high on PCP, get home after catching 7 passes from Brady, then continue his heavy habit of smoking PCP. He was most likely high for many of Belichick’s lectures the next day at practice.

  22. the marijuana test policy was created to allow players to allow to “pass” it…a veritable win/win for the League and NFLPA members.

    the testing schedule is as asinine as the law that inspired it!

  23. Wow, a Pat’s player who was cheating.

    You just don’t know it.

  25. It’s so easy to pass a Pot test it’s a joke….I smoke daily and can quit the day before and pass – all you need to do is drink copious amounts of water/H2O and you’re ‘in like Flint’.

  26. the lax substance of abuse policies including testing is part of the CBA so has 2 culprits — the 2 parties to the CBA — the league AND the players.

    de facto use of substance of abuse is allowed unless a player is careless and/or stupid.

  27. What is the lure, people? I smoked a little in college, but didn’t get anything out of it. So I quit. Now that I am older and more responsible, I still don’t. I imagine people in Washington and Colorado where it’s “legal” are eventually going to have to deal with people high on pot driving and causing accidents and fatalities that are bound to increase insurance rates. Is it worth it? No matter what the potheads tell us, the human body was not made to injest smoke and eventually will pay the price. Find some other activity or worthy cause to pursue.

  28. If you smoke week, then you are stupid. Stupid is as stupid does. You can play the system for what it is but sooner or later it comes back and bites you u know where. No one is getting over here including the subject of this article.

  29. Aside from PEDs, the concept of beating NFL drug tests is just like speeding on the freeway. People speed (often egregiously), but make sure to slow down when they detect a police officer present.

    is the whole country turning into hippies?

    Pretty much. Pot was ridiculously popular in the 50s and 60s, and has never gone away. So you now have people that would be in their 80s that have smoked weed. That assumes that they were in their teens or 20s back then. But the fact is that pot has been part of the culture for a long time. people that have smoked it or still do know that the drug is over-classified by the Feds, and has far fewer negative effects than alcohol. I personally know many people that choose weed over booze at every opportunity. The acceptance of pot is widespread because people understand that it is nowhere near as damaging as it has been portrayed. Former NFL players have gone on record as saying they used it during their careers to help with pain and stress. I have seen estimates that say over 50% of the league uses it regularly, and i believe it. I have worked at companies where that statistic was true as well. If you are against it and speak about it, then people will not let you know that they partake, but the fact is that it is more widely used by people than any estimate will really indicate.

  31. Dude… Anyone who’s looked at a television in a bar on a Sunday knows that beating NFL drug tests is easy.

    Bring on the draft, damn your eyes! We need some actual news!

  32. Beer sales and beer advertising make a huge profit for the NFL. There are more alcoholics in America than there are marijuana addicts. Alcohol is big business and it will never go away. It’s an accepted activity that millions of Americans partake in on a daily basis. If you are stupid enough to drink and do something illegal or hurt someone you should pay a huge price: prison and/or huge fine. Taking these tests and failing these tests when no one gets hurt is just plain idiotic. Do owners or anyone in the NFL offices have to take alcohol and/or drug tests? Of course not, but why not? You can’t have owners and the NFL having their own set of rules. Level the playing field and quit making an issue when there is no issue. Get over it. Move on.

  33. I’ve said forever their drug testing program is a joke. They were brilliant though because they created the sham early on and sheeple ate it up. Unlike the MLB who waited forever and looked like idiots because of it.

  34. Find it kind of weird that they do their recreational drug testing in June, and not during the season. You would think they would want the players to have clear minds during the season, and not in the offseason. If players are going to have to fake not using drugs, you would think they would want it during the season, and not in June.

    That’s funny I say the same thing about drunks. I’ll take a stoner over a drunk any day of the week.

  37. “Wow, a Pat’s player who was cheating.”

    So smoking weed is now somehow “cheating” ?

    Then you better label ever single team in the league as “cheaters” including the one you follow because there is zero doubt that every single team in the league has numerous pot smokers on it.

    The double standard of the Pats haters is both enormous and ridiculous.

  38. So if Gordon played for the Pats … he never would have been caught.

    You gotta love people who make blanket judgements over vast portions of society with qualms at all. People who smoke include 50-75% of Hollywood, NFL, NBA, the music industry, silicon valley, and probably politics. These guys are losers and Joe 6 pack is a saint. Love it.

  44. What are the effects of marijuana on the brain? I wonder how many of the former players with brain issues were regular pot smokers?

  45. It has been well documented that the NFL drug policy is a joke, and any player, should they want to, could easily smoke 11 months out of the year and never raise a flag. The ones that get caught, are the ones who take their job for granted and truly do not care. To those who say, “do you drink alcohol?” Yea, go into work drunk, see how your boss feels about that. When someone is drunk, it’s extremely obvious, plus you can buy a tester for like $100. Even if it is legal in all 50 states, puerto rico, and the virgin islands, the NFL will still ban their players from showing up to work high, just like they do showing up to work drunk. Is it still that hard to understand?

  46. This has been known for yers, which is why when guys get caught, I always say they really have a problem. Robert Smith broke this down a few years ago when discussing how guys beat the test every year and then had their fun the rest of the year around.

  47. i was a training camp assistant a few years ago and used to go into the players hotels rooms to stock their fridges and stuff. from what i remember, while the players are at practice, when they got back to the hotel at night they’d have a sheet of paper under their door telling them they need to be at the facility at like 6am to take a piss test in an open bathroom with just one urinal with no stalls or anything so i knowing that i think it’d be hard to cheat since they only gave them 12ish hours notice

  48. Any player who gets caught is an idiot.

    I’d say most players smoke pot.

    Teams only care if they get caught. Should stop even testing for it

  49. I am 45, retired with a happy wife and kids well taken care of. We do what we want for the most part these days…and I have smoked regularly since highschool.

    Ignorant people think they are smart…*shrugs….puffs…..passes*

  50. It may not even be that complicated.

    A professional athlete has a very high metabolic rate, so in theory you process things much faster through your system than the average person. Now if you add to that a quart of apple cider vinegar diluted with a couple gallons of water and some golden seal tablets you could pass a test after smoking weed in about 3-4 days with a guarantee to pass and maybe even in as little as 2 full days. Guys in college have been using this system for a long time and it works.

    It all depends on the person and knowing your own system. A professional athlete knows his own body extremely well from working out, taking supplements, and PED’s.

  51. Yeah. Weed is soooo scary.

    What causes people to commit crimes and drive their cars into telephone poles?

    The stuff that they advertise like crazy during football games on Sunday.

    The NFL is too big for itself. It looks incredibly stupid whenever it tries to make any sort of moral statement.

    Good job teaching your kids that it’s okay to break the law and support drug cartels.

  56. Why is this news? This is true for at least 75% of the NFL. Also, its really not that difficult to pass a drug test if you understand basic physiology and how to research good sources. The NFL shouldn’t even test for marijuana, in my opinion they have much bigger fish to fry.

  57. Good job teaching your kids that it’s okay to break the law and support drug cartels.

    Know that anytime you vote against legalization YOU are the one supporting the cartels.

    Now let me go back to watching hero with my son.

  59. I know why it’s called dope.

    Contrary to common belief, marijuana can be addictive. Research suggests that about 1 in 11 users becomes addicted to marijuana (Anthony, 1994; Lopez-Quintero 2011).This number increases among those who start as teens (to about 17 percent, or 1 in 6) and among people who use marijuana daily (to 25-50 percent) (Hall, 2009a; Hall, 2009b).

    Users also report less academic and career success. For example, marijuana use is linked to a higher likelihood of dropping out of school (McCaffrey, 2010). It is also linked to more job absences, accidents, and injuries (Zwerling, 1990).

  60. Josh Gordon falls under a different set of rules. He has screwed up so many times they can ask for blood and urine samples at any time. He was suspended for pot, did his time, got re-instated, passed numerous drug tests, then has a few beers on the ride home from the last regular season game, gets tested for ALCOHOL, fails, and that’s where we are today. Again, different circumstances.

  61. hey Craig marijuana is absolutely not physiologically addictive. the addiction you are referring to is a psychological one rather like being addicted to Big Macs or chocolate or ice cream.

    Your body is not telling you you need it your brain is which you can actually control…well some people can anyway.

    All those studies you just went out and Googled trying to make your point are about motivation… nothing more.

    …but you are from Texas it looks like so don’t worry about it you don’t have to think about this for a while just stick to your guns and keep supporting that Mexican drug cartel you love so much

    Yeah…and I bet you drink.

    Dope you say?

  64. Just out of curiosity what are the counterpoints in the legalization debate? I have read hundreds of reasons supported by scientific studies, medical journals, and economists that support the legalization of marijuana, but I have yet to see a valid argument against it. If you have a valid reason please post it.

    That’s not as easy as it sounds if you are smoking an ounce a day as Hernandez was supposedly
    ————————-
    Not sure if you’ve ever seen an ounce of pot. That’s A LOT of pot and is virtually impossible to smoke in a single day.

  81. There are plenty of Hall of Famers, doctors, lawyers, judges who smoke pot all the time. If they’re good people, who cares? Some people don’t drink cola, coffee, or tea. Again, who cares? It’s a free country. I love America. I don’t smoke pot, but I’d rather share the roads with stoners than drunks if I had to choose. Booze is legal too. Booze is a hard drug compared to pot. Freedom ain’t for everyone, but I don’t see too many Americans trying to escape this country. In fact, I see more people coming than going. But feel free to leave if you don’t like all this freedom.

  82. The funniest part of the whole Hernandez affair are these side articles about him. Here’s a guy who murdered a friend of his in cold blood, probably shot some other people, and did who knows how much other terrible stuff and we get articles focusing on “he smoked pot” and “he lied to the team owner about his whereabouts.” Can’t wait to hear how he was also a lousy tipper and left somebody hanging for an autograph.

  83. @mogogo1, the point of this story is to give credibility to Hernandez’s defense. On the witness stand his fiancée stated that the box she threw out smelled like pot

    They are trying to say that the box that his fiancee threw out was full of Pot, and not a smoking gun.

  84. And this policy is exactly as it should be. I have absolutely no problem with NFLers partying it up when they’re not hard at work smashing their skulls together.

  85. Apparently, some marijuana users get violent on the drug. Or, were the murders Hernández committed done while he was studying for the drug test? So, either reefer makes some people violent, or withdrawal from reefer makes some people go berserk and kill people.

  86. he also knew that if you have millions of dollars, and no weapon found, you have good odds of getting off. that woman holds all the jail house keys!!!

  87. All of the Josh Gordon comments are cute but he’s in the “program” because of alcohol not rec drugs. It doesn’t absolve him of failure but it’d be good of jokey commenters to have their facts in order.

    If the NFL was serious about weed, they would do a hair test.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Have you seen Hernandez’s hair? Maybe that explains the “Putting Green” haircut…….
  89. He’s a New England Patriot. They know how to “Beat the NFL” system as a matter of course. It’s the Patriot way.
  90. NFL teams have pharmacies in their locker rooms. This is a joke. The NFL gives them stronger drugs than marijuana.
    And there is a difference between habitual and casual user.
    After you’ve been beaten, battered, and bruised for 60 minutes, you’re in too much pain to sleep. Is smoking some pot to help you relax, to help you sleep, a bad thing?
    As long as you show up to work on time, fit and ready to go to work, where’s the issue?
  91. Josh Gordon’s problem as well as the other players, is that if you flunk a weed test…they will tests you more and more…. so don’t get caught 🙂
    PCP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  93. he’s about to get away with murdering people. getting away with drug test is nothing indeed.
  94. Odin Lloyd smoked marijuana one night and died almost immediately afterwards; you can’t make the case that it’s not dangerous.
