The McNabb trade, five years later

Getty Images

Five years ago yesterday — and precisely five Easters ago today — the NFL proved that pro football never takes a day off, via the out-of-nowhere trade that sent quarterback Donovan McNabb from the Eagles to Washington.

In hindsight, it really wasn’t a bolt from the blue.  Even though former Eagles coach Andy Reid had declared McNabb to be the starter for 2010, some (like PFT) wouldn’t believe it until Philadelphia extended McNabb’s contract, which was due to expire after the upcoming season.  A week before the trade happened, we concluded that a trade was inevitable; a day before it happened, Jay Glazer of FOX reported that Philadelphia and Washington had been talking about a possible deal.

After a declaration from former G.M. (now executive V.P. of football operations) Bruce Allen that McNabb would be the quarterback in D.C. “for years,” McNabb eventually got a new contract, a grossly overhyped deal that came after McNabb had been benched by former Washington coach Mike Shanahan.  Initially reported as being a five-year extension worth $78 million, with $40 million guaranteed, the new contract guaranteed McNabb only $3.5 million.

McNabb’s “for years” tenure with the team amounted to one, with 13 starts, 3,377 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, and 10 fumbles (only one of which was recovered by the opposing defense).  Next came a post-lockout trade to the Vikings for a sixth-round draft choice that became running back Alfred Morris.

Five days after the deal, Deion Sanders of NFL Network declared it to be the “dumbest trade ever,” comparing it to the Herschel Walker “shibacle,” with the Eagles in Deion’s view getting the raw end of the transaction.  Philly actually won the trade in the short term, winning the division in 2010 with Mike Vick resurrecting his career after a Week One concussion suffered by Kevin Kolb.

Neither team won the trade over the long haul, with both franchises missing the playoffs in 2011, and Washington pressing the reset button in 2012 with a blockbuster deal for Robert Griffin III.  Washington won the division with a 10-6 record that year, the Eagles won the division the following season with a 10-6 record (and a new head coach), and both team missed the playoffs in 2014.

The deal is now officially a lose-lose, with neither franchise winning a playoff game in the five years since McNabb left Philly.

Maybe the two teams can give it another try this year, if Marcus Mariota falls past the first four picks and remains on the board when Washington is on the clock.

  1. As far as I’m concerned, Washington won this trade. With the 2nd round pick the Redskins traded to Philadelphia, the Eagles selected Nate Allen.

Washington only had to suffer through 1 year of McNabb. Eagles fans had to suffer through 5 years of Nate Allen.

  2. We’re talking the Eagles and the Skins here….there are never going to be any winners. Its like choosing between which leg it would be better to have broken.

  3. Michael Irvin believes every franchise that participated in trades for Andy Reid’s Eagles QBs got totally “debacled”.

  4. I can imagine how Chip Kelly will feel if he has to face Mariota twice a year in his own division. Will he be sorry that he didn’t give away the farm to trade up for Mariota? Or will he be happy that he wasn’t so foolish? On the other hand, if Washington drafts Mariota, what will that mean for RG3? A future in Philly as Chip’s ideal QB? The drama is building and we’ll find out the answers at the end of this month when this long anticipated draft takes place.

  5. “Washington only had to suffer through 1 year of McNabb. Eagles fans had to suffer through 5 years of Nate Allen”

You mean the Nate Allen who they haven’t replaced yet? Unless Chip’s got some stealth move up his sleeve, they may wish that they still had Nate Allen by the time all is said and done.

  6. Lose-lose?

Philly got a 2nd round pick for a McNabb who played less than a season for Washington. How is that a “lose-lose”?

Philly clearly made out better in that trade.

  7. Michael Irvin said he would have taken Geno Smith number one, overall. Irvin’s as dumb as a fence post.

  8. Eagles got a second round pick for a guy who was benched in 2010 then traded, then benched in 2011 then cut, then retired.

Clearly the eagles won as they got a 2nd round pick for a guy who was finished.

  9. As a Skins fan I didn’t like McNabb, but had respect for him – he was a great player for 10 years for the Eagles and they were a perennial playoff team.

It was kind of cool to think about the possibilities of McNabb as a Skin, but it became pretty clear very quickly that Mike/Kyle just didn’t click with McNabb, who liked to freelance a bit too much when the Shanahans wanted a much more predictable “do exactly as the play says” kinda guy.

I McNabb’s stints in D.C./MN showed that he maybe had lost a little love for the game due to his seemingly aloof personality and lack of preparation, which quite frankly was just kind of a sad deflation to an otherwise pretty great career.

  10. Phily got screwed by the clown…then Washington got screwed by this clown…then Minnesota got screwed by this clown…why is he even being talked about?

  11. Exactly when do we celebrate the “puke”? McNabb’s, not the rest of us alki’s.

  12. Remember when McNaab was in the Super Bowl and was too busy puking his guts out in the huddle to properly manage the clock…

Remember when McNabb refused to wear a wristband with the Redskins plays in it because he thought it would make him look stupid? Fun times.

  13. Him being traded to the Vikings for anything was worse than the Hershal Walker trade. Dude was worse than Josh Freeman for 6 weeks before he got benched for Ponder who played terribly for 3 years ughhh thank god for Teddy.

  14. I don’t see why you’d say both teams “lost” the trade. I’d say the one that no longer had McNabb on their roster won hands down.

  15. would the packers like to forget about that Epic playoff loss? 4th and 17! Lol,ahh the packers defense, the joke that keeps on giving!

  16. When they trade u within the division that says u have nothing left
At first we all said wow how stupid

Mcnabb had really good yrs in Philly but man i never seen anyone who threw that ball in the dirt every game

  17. The Shenanigans ( I mean Shanahan boys) couldn’t coach Joe Montana and Jerry Rice to a winning record. He didn’t win with Elway until TD carried them. Everything McNabb said about both of them became true…then he offered to help RGme..who publicly refused and acted like he knew everything already. Look what happened there. The Shenanigans had a good QB that could’ve helped them. Instead they LIED about him to the media calling him words like lazy and dumb. Those 2 need to admit they suck..and fade away.

    4th & 17? Are you talking aboutg 4th and 26?

  19. You have one team that has never won a Super Bowl, and another that’s been irrelevant for 25 years. So does it all really matter?

  20. Say what you want about McNabb but he was correct about Mike Shanahan, Kyle Shanahan, & Robert Griffin III. This trade COULD OF worked but it didn’t because of neopotism and arrogance.

As for the Vikings…that entire train was a colossal failure that was doomed to fail in hindsight. Musgrave is awful.

Phily got screwed by the clown…

    ———

If by screwed you mean being able to enjoy a playoff team almost every year for eleven years, then darn it screwed we were! The reason fans watch sports is for entertainment and fun as none of us are getting paid from it besides betting. One superbowl and five NFC championship appearances? Some teams during that time struggled to make the playoffs, some of the still are (Buffalo), heck the Eagles barely sniffed them in the previous era. No a superbowl wasn’t one but in the end it was still fun and provided a lot of memories. Only a clown would say that Philly was screwed by him.

Yeah 4th and 26! Who was receiver who caught the ball?
    ————————–

The ONLY catch of Fred Ex’s life

This idiot was so laughably bad that even BB outright said he stunk

  23. The article doesn’t mention that McNabb was benched for Rex Grossman in the 4th quarter of a one possession game.

  24. Two of the most pathetic franchises in the NFL. At least the Redskins have actually won a Super Bowl unlike Philly which will never win one.

  25. Yeah, remember when McNabb didn’t know the overtime rules vs Cincinnati.. you’re supposed to be an NFL quaterback…

  26. You have to consider in evaluation of this trade, that a year afterward they in turn swindled two 6th round picks by trading him to the foolish vikings.

Naturally, once he couldn’t make the vikings roster, McNabb was out of the NFL.

  27. Knowing what we know, I think if Washington could go back in time and not do this trade, they would. I think if Philly could go back in time and not do this trade, they would still do it… Hence not a lose lose situation…. Philly may not have won by as much as they would have liked but they didn’t lose. Skins took a shot McNabb had more in the tank than he did… they lost.

  28. Both lost, but it’s cause philly always drafts bad. Here’s a few names that went after Nate Allen. Rob gronkowski, jimmy graham, Navarro bowman, Daryl Washington, tj ward, that’s just 5 of many. Makes me wonder how long has there scout been there. Get a new one. Smdh

  29. Say what you want about D Mac, he was the best qube the Eagles have had in my lifetime, and probably in franchise history. Like him or not, the Iggs were relevant when he was there.
Say what you want about Big Red, he was the best coach the Eagles have had in my lifetime, and probably in franchise history. Like him or not, the Iggs were relevant when he was there.
There’s also no denying that Andy knew when to cut the cord on a player. As much as I wanted Dawk and Duce (my favorite player ever) to finish their careers as Eagles, from a football standpoint AR made the right decision. Of course, my birds are still trying to find a replacement for # 20…

  30. Remember that year the vikes missed the playoffs?… Not that year, the other one… Hmm, it’s hard to distinguish that year from all the others

Only a clown wouldn’t realize that puking and being such a choke job in the biggest game of the year IS getting screwed by that clown! But enjoy never having won the big one!

  32. orivar, COULD OF? Your English teacher must be proud.
COULD HAVE is the right term.

  33. Nate Allen wasn’t terrible, he wasn’t good, by average by far. McNabb was on the decline, and the Eagles received huge compensation for a guy Philly was just tired of hearing about. It wasn’t just Donovan, it was his parents too. By moving McNabb when they did, they avoiding having to cut/release him in the very near future. That pick could have went towards any number of prospects, and if you ask many fans late last year, Nate finally started to settle down and looked decent.

The biggest problem in Philly is the fact that dominant safeties are not a dime a dozen. So many teams pick player after player, year after year, looking for the next Brian Dawkins – Nate Allen was such as pick.

Coming into this 2015 season, Nate Allen is a raider, still playing football – McNabb has been retired for how long? The Eagles win in this trade is there is to be a winner because they gave themselves a chance at adding a player that would be around a lot longer than what McNabb would have been around for. At the safety position currently – you have Watkins/Coupin/Wolff/Draftee looking to compete with Jenkins on the other side. IF, big IF there – IF Couplin can put 2 and 2 together and nail down the coverage scheme – you have one hell of a steal last december that Lions fans will cry about for years.

  34. Washington had its shot to move on and didnt. GR3 is the starter they arent drafting a 1st rounder that cant beat him in camp. Mariota is a project and no where near better right now. Nor do I buy Chip would take Mariota in the 1st. He made his move at QB and knows next years draft will be stacked with better options. Ive watched a lot of Mariota and in pressure spots Chip took the ball out of his hands. He fits his system sure but Chip know he is not Manning on wheeles as he has hyped him as. Im not even sure Chip would take him over Hundley. Will someone fall for the Mariota hype train and trade up maybe. I think Cleveland and SD are right on that track. I do not see Tenn or the JETS in love with him. But the Jets werent in love with Sanchez either but Woody wanted the GQ cover boy. I dont think he’d last long in NY so for his sake I hope it doesnt fall that way.

  35. This trade highlights the fact that while trading draft picks is always questionable, a “wait and see” approach should be taken before declarations are made as to the “winners and losers” of a deal. While trading away a 2nd round pick is painful, the Eagles only managed to turn that pick into Nate Allen. While we all know Trent Richardson isn’t worth a 2050 conditional 7th round pick, his trade to the Colts doesn’t seem as bad as the Browns used that pick to leverage a move up in the round to take Johnny Manziel (the Eagles in the exchange selected Marcus Smith). While the natural reaction of fans is to point to one team and tell them how bad they just got fleeced, you only are truly the loser of a trade if the team on the other end hits with their pick. These sorts of trades take years to sort themselves out. In plenty of cases there are no winners, only disappointed fans years after the fact.

  36. Love when Redskin fans and Cowgirl fans use any any every format to brag about Super bowl rings they won last CENTURY. If they can count them, why can’t we Iggle fans claim 3 championships? Hey, the Jets, Chiefs and even Dolphins won rings…but were any of you born. No. Get over it if one playoff win in 17 means you suck

  37. To all the cheeseheads with their childish ranting taunts…

Bridgewater does agree with you that he could do better… which is why Andrew Krammer of ESPN thinks Bridgewater sits No. 1 as the top second year breakout candidate for the 2015 season. Also listed were San Francisco RB Carlos Hyde, St. Louis RB Tre Mason, San Francisco LB Aaron Lynch, Cleveland OL Joel Bitonio, Dallas DE DeMarcus Lawrence, Jacksonville WR Allen Robinson and Pittsburgh DE Stephon Tuitt.

That’s odd… I don’t see the name HaHa Dix on the list. Maybe if the list was longer… like 64 names… Dix might be on it… somewhere.

  38. not many sites would go back 5 years to dig up an article where they think they were right. But the very very insecure ones will

  39. 4th and 26……

    Seattle’s epic comeback……

Green Bush’s record all time choke…..

Funny how Packer collapses just find their way into every article..

Because that’s what they do best..CHOKE PACK CHOKE!!!!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, the dumpster fire that is …….

    Your Green Bay Packers!!!

    BAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

  40. You can’t look at the results of the draft picks obtained connected to this trade if you did you would have to say Redskins got the better end because they ended up with Morris you got to look at the value which was a 2nd round pick for McNabb who was at the end of his career in that sense the Eagles got the better end of the deal.

  41. Andy Reid should have be released right after that trade was made.

The fact that they didn’t draft Earl Thomas still bothers me to this day.

I think that even if they did use the 2nd round pic on Nate Allen, Earl would have been able to compensate and make that a fierce S tandem.

    bitter birds fan,, out..

  42. Surprisingly the Redskins made out pretty good with the trade for the draft pick from the Minnesota team.

  43. The McNabb trade was Bruce Allen’s idea, not Mike Shanahan’s. Thanks to Bruce Allen, the Redskins spent two good draft picks for a one-year rental on a washed up QB.

No wonder Bruce Allen’s record as leader of the Redskins is 28-52.

  44. Elway won 51per cent of his games without Shanahan. 0-2 in playoff games. 83/88/92/93/94. Every QB that started two years in the NFL went to the pro bowl with Shanahan. 6,can you name them? He averaged 15 wins in 3 out of 4 years as the head coach with Elway plus 2 Super Bowl wins.He took all the pressure off Elway with a great running game. Plummer won 36 per cent of his games as a 6 year starter with Arizoa. Won 72 per cent of his games with the Broncos. Again. A great running game.Rg3 will be out of the league without Shanahan and the offense he ran. Russell Wilson had more rushing yards this season than RG3 had as a rookie. He knows how to slide and throw the ball away. He runs an offense that fits his ability and is not a Diva. Rg3, not having Shanahan will cost you a lot of money!

  45. The trade was the result of one team (Redskins) over evaluating the “talent” on the roster and thinking that a few tweaks here and there could lead to a playoff run. This, of course, came from Snyder who has no clue how to evaluate talent. The team was in such decline that it could have used the draft picks more than a veteran QB who was a year long for retirement.

Philly didn’t put to good use the return for McNabb. Getting an “average” player in return for a 10 year starting QB doesn’t cut it. Allen didn’t have to be a five-time all pro, but he needed to be better than average.

As far as McNabb not working out in DC, Shannahan said from the start he didn’t want a vet QB and would rather have a drafted one. He didn’t handle the situation dealt well and McNabb didn’t either (mostly continuing the feud after his retirement for some stupid reason). Shannahan wasn’t responsible for McNabb’s career end – -McNabb’s rapidly declining play took care of that. The partnership between them was destined to fail. Again, Snyder stuck his nose in and the end result wasn’t good.

  46. “The deal is now officially a lose-lose, with neither franchise winning a playoff game in the five years since McNabb left Philly.”

McNabb Bobby Layne’d the Eagles!!! Oh no, another 50 years?!?
