Vikings give John Sullivan a raise with contract extension

AP

The Vikings found their quarterback of the future last season, and now they’ve taken care of the guy who gets the ball to him.

Via Field Yates of ESPN, the Vikings have extended center John Sullivan’s contract by a year, giving him a nice raise.

He was already under contract the next two years at $4.65 million in base salary each year. Now, he’ll make $7 million this year and $5.5 million the following two years.

Sullivan, 29, gives the Vikings some stability in the middle of the line, and the deal rewards a guy who has improved since they signed him to an extension in 2011.

  1. I like John Sullivan, he’s a good player who has not beaten 4 year old children so he is able to suit up each Sunday, a huge advantage that not all of his teammates enjoy.

He is a good enough player to have waited for free agency and then moved on. Apparently, playing games in January and February are not huge priorties for him and I suppose that’s fine, the money is good and a shorter season makes for a longer career.

  2. “Vikings give John Sullivan a raise with contract extension”-How about a good starting left guard to go with that raise and the extension?!

  3. I am sorry, but as a Viking fan, I just don’t find Sullivan all that impressive. Yes he needs help at LG, and the team has done NOTHING to improve that spot to this point during the off-season.

But there are far too many times when I have seen Sullivan get pushed into the backfield by bigger DTs. He is smart, he knows his assignments and he’s not a bad center. But he gets overpowered far more often than his predecessor (Matt Birk) ever did.

  4. ^ compared to other centers in the league. He is one the best. Big DT will always push people around. Thats nothing new. And he isnt alone. The Pouncey’s are in the same boat.

  5. Decent player and with him being under contract already I’m not sure the raise was warranted …. Good on the Vikings for doing it though

  6. Why? He was already getting a fair salary and was still under contract for two more years. They could have just saved the extra money and included it in a new deal when his current deal expired if they still wanted him in two years.

  7. The Vikings had one of the best o-lines for several straight years. AP doesn’t play one year and they are suddenly garbage? Tell me again how the Vikings don’t need AP.

  8. This guy is invaluable to the Vikings O-line. He is the only center in the NFL capable of snapping the ball into hands the size of two tea cups placed side-by-side. It’s harder to do than you think. He’s earning every dollar.

  9. I assume they made this move to free up some space under the salary cap, so I wonder what they cleared. Or maybe they’re expecting to free up a lot of space soon so figured they should start handing out some new contracts.

Hey, those Sconnies feel bad enough after last night’s crushing loss. Do you have to start your story with the words they fear the most?

John Sullivan is undersized and overrated. This coming from a Vikings fan. Our o-line is terrible.

    ————–

Actually he’s 6’4″ and a little over 300 lbs- that’s not undersized for a center. Last year he was the #12 center by PFF, and the last few before that always in the top 5 in the league. Them’s the facts.

The Vikings OL was terrible last year- having lost half of the starters to injury. If every one played as well as Sullivan, however, it would have been a top rated line, as it had been in the past- when guys were healthy. They need a LG, and Kalil needs to get back in the groove after his knee injury, but it’ll happen.

  12. He’s a solid, smart player that is technically sound and makes all the line calls — he certainly deserves the extension. Much of the interior line difficulties can be traced to the weak play at the left guard spot. Most important, he is intelligent enough to advise his head coach when to go for a first down when it’s 4th and 1 at a critical juncture in an important game.

  13. Can anyone explain how the Packers were 14-5 against us in the 80’s when we keep saying they sucked during that decade?? 14-5!!

  14. Because the Vikings also sucked during much of that decade. That doesn’t change the fact that the Packers sucked. At least the Vikings made the playoffs and one NFC championship game in that decade, but the Packers can fondly remember their 5-3-1 record in 1982 that got them into the playoffs for the second time in a 25-year run.

  15. That line was pretty offensive last year and keeping them intact will only assure more of the same. Spieladope needs his contract extended!

  16. Hey Packer fans!! Whatjusthapped?????

Badgers continue the CHOKE that defines WISCONSIN!!

    Packers CHOKE!!

    BADGERS CHOKE!!

    CHOKE CHOKE CHOKE!!

    BAHAHAHA!!!!!!

  17. the packers also sucked in the 70’s when the vikings went 15-4-1 against them, we also advanced to 3 super bowls that decade.

yes, we lost 3 super bowls but that equates to 3 nfl championships in packer land by winning the conference. think i’m wrong? the packers beat the cowboys in the ice bowl, an nfl championship, and played in super bowl I the next week against the chiefs and won, they claim that to be 2 championships in a two week span. but, somehow, the vikings beating the browns in the last nfl championship in ’69 and advancing to play in the super bowl counts as zero championships.

oh, and good for Sully on the raise.

  18. I guess you’ve never heard of the NFL-AFL merger.

The leagues merged in 1966 which also allowed the creation of what would become the Superbowl, won that year by the Green Bay Packers. Since that time the winner of the Superbowl is the champion of professional football.

You will never hear a Packers fan claim they won two titles that year (or the previous year). They won the Superbowl.

What you will hear is Vikings fans claiming that their team “won a title, too” even though they played in the Superbowl and lost.

I believe that’s called grasping at straws.

Nobody makes that claim. Check the NFL official records. Read what they have to say about championships and the SuperBowl era.

You won’t sound so stupid afterwards.

It looks like the badgers are keeping up the Choking trend in Wisconsin!

    ))))))))))))))

Aaron Rodgers was there at the game. Bringing the bad juju with him.

  21. Stellar

It’s pretty simple in 1969 they had two leagues. AFL and NFL . The Vikings won the NFL. They started the super bowl not to name a league champion. But to name a world champion. The Vikings won the NFL in 1969 whether you or other queen bay trolls acknowledge it or not.

  22. Wait? Packer fans have never claimed 13 championships and the Vikings have zero? that would just be stupid, and surely a claim never uttered on these boards before by cheeseheads.

and, yeah, i’m aware of the merger.

Do any of you Viking fans know how to count???????

Go to the NFL site and see if the Packers get credit for two championships in each of the first two SuperBowl years. I’ll save you the trouble……they don’t.

Which means, the Vikings don’t get credit in 1969 either.

I will be glad to acknowledge a Viking Championship in 1969, just as soon as I read any of you maroons writing: “The Packers have 15 Championships.”

    It will never happen.

  24. Choking isn’t any fun, but it’s easier than eating it…..as the Vikings have been doing.
