Anquan Boldin talks up Jim Tomsula

There’s been a great deal of skepticism surrounding the 49ers this offseason, based largely on the fact that they replaced a very successful head coach in Jim Harbaugh with a totally unproven head coach in Jim Tomsula. But at least one veteran player on the 49ers thinks his team is in good hands.

San Francisco wide receiver Anquan Boldin said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that Tomsula — who has been the 49ers’ defensive line coach for the last eight years — has the support of the players who know him best.

“He is very energetic . . . guys who played for him busted their butts for him,” Boldin said. “I think he is going to do well.”

Boldin thinks the changes in San Francisco are par for the course in the NFL.

“We have gone through a lot of change in San Francisco but that is just a part of the game and we just have to move forward,” Boldin said.

If the 49ers can’t move forward, the people who bear the brunt of the blame will be Tomsula, and the 49ers brass who decided that Tomsula was a better man for the job than Harbaugh.

  1. And what the Hell is Boldin suppose to do at this point??? Talk bad about the new coach??

    Please…

This guy is a kiss @ss yes man who talked bad about Harbaugh behind his back!! What kind of man is that??

When the 49ers go 4-12, we’ll see how much “on board” Boldin and the rest of the 49ers management are about him. To me, he’s just a kiss @ss coach in the mode of Jim Fassel, Wade Phillips and Norv Turner.

  2. Tomsula was an assistant coach when the defense loved him…He didn’t bench anyone or reprimand/fine any of these guys Fagio or Harbaugh did…Give it a season when as head coach your popularity becomes tested and see what they think…Also I bet he (Tomsula) is on a short leash so his personality will change especially if they don’t come out of the blocks strong.

  3. I can’t believe all the people that have jumped off the 49ers wagon. I’m 29,Frank Gore is my favorite 49er of all time and I wish him the best. The Niners have made great moves this off season. Clearly they’re number one priority was to add speed on offense adding Torrey Smith and Reggie Bush. Carlos Hyde will run for more yards than Frank Gore, and Jim Tomsula will lead the 49ers to the playoffs and probably the Super Bowl.

  4. What did you expect home to say? The truth? “I have no idea who this guy is, and it’s a joke he’s our head coach.”

  5. the people bashing tomsula and the 49ers really crack me up. just a bunch of clowns with the iq of a peanut.

  6. What Anquan should be saying is I should have never left Baltimore for this train wreck at the end of my career. I had the best coach harbaugh in the family and it would have been the smart thing for me to rework my contract so I could stay where I won my first Super Bowl and have a realistic chance to win my second with the chemistry I developed with January Joe!

we miss you in charm city, Hope you and torrey enjoy the money and frustration out there in SF. Good news is you should get a chance to see the Ravens when they visit your home stadium to play in the big 50!!!!

    BlACK AND PURPLE!

Just who are the 4 teams you predict SF will beat?

  8. “If the 49ers can’t move forward, the people who bear the brunt of the blame will be Tomsula, and the 49ers brass…”

No. Jed York personally stated that if the niners tank, all the blame should be directed at himself.

And that’s exactly where all the blame will be directed.

  9. LOL @ people saying 4-12.

They were 8-8 last year with the 25th ranked offense, terrible play calling and coaching, players quitting on Harbaugh(Crabtree, Iupati, VD), 17 players on IR, no Willis, Bowman, Aldon, Termaine Brock for all of the season and the majority of the season.

With a weaker schedule, better play calling and play on offense and Oline play(can’t get worse). Bowman, Termaine and Aldon are back, Lynch, Tank, Ward and Johnson all waiting to breakout. This team will be competing for the division at the very minimum.

C’mon man, just because someone dsagrees with you doesn’t make them stupid. My question is, if Tomsula is that good, why didn’t he keep the job when he had it after Singletary got axed?

    Huh? Tomsula benched Ahmed Brooks……twice

  12. Geeeeesus! “Niner fans” giving up on the season before it even starts. Lol. I’m glad the bandwagon is cleared, I can stretch my legs. Only time will tell if Tomsula is the guy. I loved JM, but not enough to make me turn my back on my favorite team. Even if the ownership is morons. It’s in the players hands.

  13. If this was about Rex Ryan you’d be saying what a loudmouth he is and all his players.

  14. I agree with Jamal. Both Anquan & Torrey shoulda stayed with The Ravens. It’s their best chance for ANOTHER SB.

  15. Boldin went on to say “When we played in the Superbowl Coach Tomsula gave the best pep talk we ever heard. He said hrmmph erm yeheah, humph”.

  16. There are PLENTY of reasons why 49er fans are disillusioned with the MANAGEMENT of this team. I don’t need to rehash those here!

As for the new head coach, time will tell and that is what can be said.

Being on the outside, I don’t respect an owner who lets go of a winning coach, much like what happened with Mooch. Apparently the (former) players didn’t either.

  17. The only thing I’ll say for Tomsula is that guys who aren’t even on the roster have been praising him. No past players, even ones that left the team on bad terms, had anything bad to say about him.

Maybe he won’t work out but it might be reasonable to see how he does at least halfway through the season before deciding he simply can’t succeed.

  18. I don’t understand how you can say a coach who led them to the nfc championship several times and a superbowl birth had players quit on him. Ask the Raiders..Jaguars..Browns.. what they wouldn’t give to be atleast 8-8 again.. some of these fans and owners are very short-sighted. If they don’t win the superbowl every year you want major change.. look at the steelers patriots and packers for examples when they fall short in the post season. 49ers. You WILL miss Harbaugh examples of great coaches are those who can win in multiple places. Check his resume.

  19. 49ers are still stacked especially with additions of Tory Smith and R Bush. Defense will still be good and offense will be vastly improved with KAP getting MVP. Sorry Raiders you will still be 3-13 and on the back page of news again! What else is new?

  20. Huh? Tomsula benched Ahmed Brooks……twice

And you know this how?…Assistants don’t bench players. Coordinators/Head Coaches do…

  21. I thought Brooks was a linebacker…And Tomsula was the defensive line coach….Damn programs…Didn’t list Tomsula as defensive line coach and linebackers coach

  22. If anyone in the 49’ers “organization” should be bashed, its that silver spooned kid York. He has made a mockery of a once fine organization. If I were a 9’ers fan (which Im not) I would be more heated with the top of the food chain and not some new, unproven coach (which one of us WOULDNT jump at that opp) or receiver at this point.

  23. The big name free agents like Gore, Iupati, and Crabtree didn’t have anything good to say about the coaching change, and none of them stuck around. That says more to me than the support of a player under contract who’s trying to make the best of a bad situation.

  24. Every player or coach who’s ever worked with Tomsula praises him endlessly, but, thousands of PFT commentators disagree.

Tomsula isn’t the problem: Mangini and Jeep Chryst do worry me however.

  25. i have NO problem with tomsula replacing harbaugh. maybe i would if harbaugh had ever won a super bowl but, he didn’t. i can’t understand why 49er fans are so upset about the team’s front office people pushing him out the door becuase he was a very overrated coach who would do best to stay in the college game.

You sir, are very disillusional. The 49ers lost all their linebackers. Their secondary is in a shambles. Their WR corps is abysmal and theri QB isn’t a QB but a runningback in reality.

And they lost a top 4 coach yet 49er fans act like their just going to replace a top 4 coach like it’s no problem.

    1. Lost all linebackers? Niners got all-pro Navarro Bowman back from injury, still got Brooks, Aldon Smith and Lynch after a promising rookie season.
    2. Absymal WR corp? You mean the abysmal WR corp that WON THE SB in 2012?
    3. Kap has been through 2012/2013 SB berth and NFCCG, so try again.
    4. Harbaugh was a great coach, but he wasn’t without flaws, offenses were terrible and he did little to nothing to fix it in 13/14/15

  28. Absymal WR corp? You mean the abysmal WR corp that WON THE SB in 2012?
    ———————————–

Um….corp…….Boldin won a Super Bowl, so who are the rest of this 2012 Super Bowl winning “WR corp?”

  29. the 49ers will be 4-12 if they are lucky. jim harbaugh was a great coach for the 49ers. tomsula is an unknown as a head coach. more telling is all the players that are leaving san fran. don’t kid yourselves 49er fans, you are in for a longgg year.

  30. I once came across a guy like Tomsula and I too lost my job to him because management thought paying him less than me and (allegedly) getting the same performance would be better for the company…Happy to say they closed a year later.

Let that be a lesson to the “smartest men in the room” in San Francisco!!!

  31. I have nothing but respect for Boldin as a player and as a man. As a player, who catches the ball when the rest of them can’t seem to get it done? Boldin has put the team back in rhythm with his clutch catches.

And, as a man? Could not believe that while in Arizona, he got crushed. Broke his jaw. Teeth had to be wired back in. Then he goes out the following week and plays an entire game for his team. Crabtree would be on IR if that happened to him. Again, as a man? He usually has things figured out, he is not afraid to give his opinion, and he does it in a very calm, insightful way. What’s wrong with that?

Boldin is quiet, no showing off, and he thinks Tomsula can pull it off, so he tells the press. Only time will tell. Tomsula could be great. I am not a believer, but I am hopeful he will prove us all wrong. Give the guy a chance. It just might work.

  32. jim harbaugh led the 49ers to 3 straight NFC championship games, a super bowl, and you dillusional 49er fans think tomsula will match that? boldin is just trying to save the 49ers from looking like total fools, too late though. boldin is a good guy, but the 49ers need a lot more than him to win.
