PFT unveils its 2015 All-Unemployed Team

One month ago Friday, NFL free agency kicked off.

It’s a good time, then, to take stock of the notable veterans still unsigned as the 2015 NFL Draft nears.

With this in mind, we’ve unveiled our annual All-Unemployed Team — and we’ve super-sized it, with an eye on getting as many capable free agents on the list.

While free agency has slowed down, there are still sparks of action here and there. For instance, the Saints reached a deal with Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer on Friday.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the edge-rushing pool is one of the most shallow left in free agency. But a few positions still have a number of accomplished unsigned players from which to choose. Center, guard and wide receiver stand out. The defensive and offensive tackle ranks aren’t completely picked over. There are a handful of solid reserve quarterbacks, too.

Finally, we pause to consider a few events that could cause the free agent market to pick up in the weeks ahead:

  • NFL Draft (April 30-May 2) — While the rookies selected during the draft and signed afterwards will push some of the veteran free agents out of the league, the draft will also open some jobs. Some teams just won’t be able to fill areas of need to their liking with rookies, and experienced help is only a phone call away.
  • Compensatory pick deadline (May 12) — Unrestricted (non-released) free agents signed before May 12 count against the compensatory-selection formula for 2016. Free agents signed after this date do not. In short, May 13 could be an action date for some of the bigger-name unsigned players left.
  • OTAs / mandatory minicamps (May 18-June 19) — These workouts could give teams a sense as to their strengths and weaknesses entering training camp in the summer.

We will update the All-Unemployed Team as the offseason progresses. Surely, other players figure to join the ranks as the rookies arrive in the weeks ahead.

That’s life in the NFL, a most competitive business.

  1. Most have been there. If it was not the fact that Carolina is sooooooooo hard up and their GM is a complete friggin idiot, Martin and Oher would be unemployed also

Buffalo plays Carolina in Buffalo for the first ore season game. I am betting Martin will be sucking his thumb as Incognito extends his hand to him ( good move by Incognito, coward move by Martin and his Mom).
