Ron Jaworski thinks the Bucs are taking Marcus Mariota first

ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski was already on the record saying he wouldn’t pick Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston first overall.

Now, he’s saying he doesn’t think the Buccaneers will, either.

During an interview with CSN’s Sports Talk Philly, Jaworski said he thinks the Bucs are going to surprise everyone and take Oregon’s Marcus Mariota.

“The latest I’m hearing now from my sources around the league, who are pretty wired in, is that he’s going to go number one now to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” Jaworski said, via PhillyMag.com. “Mariota’s stock, remember it was quiet for a while? And there’s a reason for that. There’s a lull every year until about 30 days before the draft. Now the coaches get involved. Prior to that, it’s the scouts, it’s the roadies that are filling out the paper work. Now the coaches get involved. Now team owners get involved. Now General Managers get involved. So you’re starting to see, in my opinion, Winston’s stock starting to slide a little bit and Mariota’s stock starting to go up a little bit.”

Perhaps that rise is on the recommendation of Eagles coach Chip Kelly, who is apparently talking up his former quarterback to others in the league.

“I’ll give you a little bit of information on how much Chip Kelly loves Marcus Mariota,” Jaworski said. “This is the time of year when everyone talks, and I talk to General Managers, I’ve talked to player personnel directors, and I’ve heard it from a couple or three people that have had conversations with Chip Kelly, and Chip Kelly said, ‘Marcus Mariota will win multiple Super Bowls in the National Football League.’

“Now, he didn’t say it was going to be in Philadelphia, but that’s how much he loves this guy, and a lot of people feel the same way, that Marcus Mariota is that good that you can win multiple Super Bowls with him as your quarterback.”

Of course, Jaworski is no stranger to taking a contrarian position, and he’s also not paid to be a reporter. But coupled with Mike Mayock’s about-face last weekand the fact the Bucs put it on their own website — it might be smoke that indicates a fire is about to be made with a bunch of mock drafts.

  1. I am pretty confident when I say that Marcus Mariota will most certainly NOT win multiple Super Bowls in the National Football League.

  2. Well, considering his sterling reputation with regards to QBs, we can all ignore this story…

  3. He can’t beat Ohio State after the Bucks turned the ball over five times. (final score was 42-20) I think he is a combination of Vinny Testaverde and a poor man’s Kaepernick rolled into one… I don’t see pocket awareness, arm, or leadership skills. If the Browns draft him I am done as a fan. BTW every Eagles former players and fans need to take Chip’s opinion with a grain of salt. He needs to win a playoff game first.

  4. And he also thinks Kaep is the best in the NFL, and that Bon Jovi never intended to try to move the Bills to Toronto had he won the bid to the team, and blah blah blah.

Jaws is a moron and his employment with ESPN epitomizes the joke that network has become.

  5. OK so Mayock and Jaworski both like Marcus Mariota but the switch isn’t on until Mel Kiper and Adam Schefter declare it. If Mel and Schefty come out and declare Mariota then it’s official, someone in Tampa Bay has leaked it.

  6. Well, if Jaworski is right about this, he’ll look smart, at least for predicting this. If he’s wrong, he’ll look like he at least have accomplished a goal of getting his name in print.

  7. I ran into Jaworski at a bar in Philadelphia once, the guy had a huge stain from a cheese steak on his shirt – I gained respect for him after that.

  8. It’s not important how many fires light up how many mock drafts, no matter what Kiper and the rest of those jokers want you to think. It’s what happens in real life on the 30th that counts.

  9. I just started hearing this on Friday, on the radio, that the infamous “sources” are now saying the Bucs want Mariota.

And someone asked the question – if the Bucs have their guy, why wait until 4/30 to sign him? There’s no advantage to handing out misinformation and smokescreens unless they plan to trade the pic, which they’re not gonna do.

  10. “Jaworski is no stranger to taking a contrarian position”…you mean how he called out all you idiots for hyping up Manziel last year? Hmmm…who was right? Neither one of these guys should be first overall picks. They’re both projects.

  11. Smoke screen. And, hey, if Kelly was so up on the guy, then why isn’t he mortgaging the farm to pick him?

    ————————————-

Agree actually. If Kelly thinks this guy will win multiple Super Bowls then doesn’t it behoove him to do whatever it takes to move up & get him?

  12. poor Mariota, I hope these reports are wrong. he is to nice a kid to be stuck in a Lovie Smith offense! doomed to handing the ball off or trowing wide receiver screens on third down. I don’t care who his oc is he will never win multiple super bowls in a lovie offense. year 2 and he has his second oc just like he did with the bears where martz lasted the longest at 2 years and people wonder why Cutler never flourished. hard to win when you are learning a new offense every year or have ron turner or mike tice calling plays. I think the bucs will mess the draft up by picking a defensive guy so Lovie does not have to deal with offense and tries to win defense only like he did with the bears. only he would take out a running back out of the super back who had run for a 60 yard td on the previous series for rookie who then fumbled on his only carry and changed the whole momentum of the game. easy to blame Rex Grossman for your stupid decision wasn’t it?

If you want to question Mariota’s pocket footwork, go ahead. But to say he doesn’t have an arm or leadership skills is a certifiable troll job.

Why do I care how Mariota played against Ohio State? Am I drafting him to play college football? Did you know Brandon Weeden beat Andrew Luck and Ryan Tannehill during his senior season?

If the Browns draft him, you’ll drink the Kool-Aid all over again. If you’re still a fan at this point, after so much crap, you’re not going anywhere. Heaven forbid the Browns have enough conviction about a quarterback to select one in the top 10 picks for the first time in 16 years.

Let’s talk about who’s opinions should be taken with a grain of salt. Who are the past two players that a consensus of Browns fans clamored for the team to draft? Trent Richardson and Johnny Manziel. What if being obsessed with tailgating isn’t the same as knowing football, and—gasp—Browns fans aren’t exactly football savants?

But…all that said, Mariota’s footwork has me worried.

  14. Winston just has the look of a guy that even if he stays out of trouble off the field, he won’t have the dedication and committment to be great, and you can’t gamble with first overall pick like that. Mariota will be dedicated imo but he’ll need to be in right offense to be successful. But Tampa’s complete lack of QB has almost forced them to have to pick a QB when clearly there are so many other impact players available. Would not be surprised at all if Tampa ends up trading the pick and not selecting either.

  15. You’re on the clock Bucs, who you going to take, EJ Manuel or Joey Harrington?

  16. I don’t think either of these two are legitimate round one picks …plus I’ve heard from several top personnel guys that there are only 15 to 17 legitimate round one picks in this whole draft for all positions.

I hope you are being sarcastic… if Russell Wilson and Trent Dilfer can win Super Bowls, I wouldn’t eliminate anyone from that group.

  18. Big Mistake you don’t pass on an elite QB, potential HOF, because he had off the field issues as a teen, when else is he suppose to mess up. Winston upside is far greater than Mariota… I would go as far as say as of right now Winston ability passing is in the top 10 right now. So to pass is a big mistake for the Bucs… Dont be fooled Tampa keep Winston in Florida and pair him with your receivers and i can almost guarantee nothing short of a few play-off wins…

  19. Please please make it happen Tampa , Marcus will be a stud !

Jameis will will weigh 280 lbs in 2 yrs and will have a Ryan leaf attitude ….. Book it

    ==========

You mean like last year, when he said that Johnny Manziel was worth a 4th round pick at best?

  21. remember when “experts” said Mike Vick would win multiple superbowls in the NFL?

  22. And that would be the mistake to end all mistakes in the 2015 draft; judging from the national title game, he won’t be a great pro.

Then again, they are the Bucs; they have lots of experience with bad personnel decisions.

  23. If the Bucs take Mariota, I give Lovie 2 years tops.

They’ll be at the #1 spot again with a new coaching staff wishing there was a QB as good as Winston in that draft—and there won’t be.

  24. regarding TB, is mike glennon that bad ? it seems the lovie smith regime hasn’t given glennon a shot. they bring in mccown and make glennon sit for much of the season.

in schiano’s last yr, after the painful separation from josh freeman, it seemed glennon showed some long term potential and also had a good td/int ratio his rookie year.

  25. I sure will be glad when the draft comes and is over, real tired of hearing who will go where and who will go 1st and some of these mock drafts are crazy!

  26. Winston may be a head case, but he can read coverage against better-than-average defenses and generally get the ball out accurately and to the right guy.

Those are the guys whose game translates well to the NFL.

  27. Nobody knows how many SB’s a QB will win especially these so called experts. NOBODY said Brady would win a SB let alone 4 of them. This is why i think the draft should be moved up so these ALL WORLD players out of college can get there careers started!

  28. Been saying here for 3 months that Tampa will either wise up and take Mariota, or not wise up and blunder into Winston out of some misguided hometown kid makes good idiocy.

Mariota is the pick. No doubt about it.

  29. Who cares, really? Every year, prior to the draft, you act like the qb’s are all elite, franchise qbs. They are not!
2014: Manziel, Bridgewater, Bortles, McCarron, Carr ring a bell? How did they do?

    Sign………….

You mean like last year, when he said that Johnny Manziel was worth a 4th round pick at best?

    ==========

No, like the last 3 years when he said Colin Kaepernick is one of the best QBs in the league.

Or like the last 3 years when he said Russell Wilson wasn’t that good.

  31. Can’t judge Mariota merely by his National Championship performance, considering that he didn’t have his best receivers on the field — Mariota threw a surefire TD pass to one receiver, on-the-numbers, and the guy just dropped it. Been saying all along that Marcus is “Tom Brady with legs”. In the right system (i.e., with the right HC), Mariota will flourish. HC/Teams that Mariota must avoid: Fisher/Rams; Whisenhunt/Titans; Pettine/Browns. HC/Teams that Mariota should embrace: Reid/Chiefs; Kelly/Eagles; McCarthy/Packers; Bowles/Jets.

  32. If the Bucs absolutely have to have a QB, they take Winston [and the baggage]. Otherwise they take Leonard Williams or trade out of the first pick. I just don’t see how you can hitch your wagon to a gimmick offense QB.

  33. Imo, I thought Glennon showed a lot of promise and some moxi… The kid looks like he’s 6’5″ about 210 lbs and nearly beat the SB champs at the time two years ago.. I say give Mike Glennon a shot, take a defensive approach in the draft and go from there Bucs! I think Glennon is every bit as good as Bradford or Foles. Definitely better than RGBust.

  34. Id like to see the Bills offer Dareus and EJ Manuel for the first pick and select Mariota. I just don’t think the Bills will be able to sign Dareus to an extension, and the bills still need a franchise qb. Make Rex earn those dollars with the D.

  35. Just amazing that so many analysts and teams are still obsessed with running quarterbacks and 40-yd dash times, when in reality, there are very few of those who ever take it to the next level in the NFL…

    Better questions —

Can he throw and maneuver in the pocket?

    Does he make quick decisions?

    Does he make good decisions?

  36. So I listened to the actual commentary. At one point during this same diatribe; Jaws suggests that the Eagles should move up to get Mariota; and lists picks 2/3/4 as the spots they’d likely have to aim for.

So if he thinks Winston would go #1 – why not suggest clearly that the Eagles would need to move up for that #1 pick? Why not even include it and instead list picks 2/3/4?

Dude can’t even be consistent with his own newly crafted rumor lol.

  37. In this exact same same talk show segment Jaws suggests that if the Eagles want Mariota they need to move up to that #2/3/4 pick.

Now please explain how that supports this headline and what he said earlier?

Can’t he at least be consistent with his own newly crafted rumor?

  38. IF Chip Kelly really thinks Marcus will win 2 Superbowls in his career then he should be trading the farm to get him on the Eagles. I don’t know if it’s gamesmanship or just him talking up a player he likes.

  39. It is amazing what people can learn from history…. especially if you see were other have made mistakes and help you avoid the same….

    Fisher’s QB’s:
    Jamarcus Russell
    Christian Ponder
    EJ Manuel
    Jameis Winston

3 1st round fails and highly likely the next up…

People will say, “Oh, but this time it’s different.”
That is familiar words spoken by consistent abuse victims.

May the Bucs stop the abuse of their fans and draft a quality, gifted, respectable player!

  40. I feared even clicking on this article to read… When anything says Ron Jaworski is “thinking” only scary and terrifying things can come from it.

  41. Bucs should trade down to the Eagles for Sam Bradford, this years second and next years first.. Chip Kelly is irrational enough to make this trade.

  42. This makes more sense then some would believe…but there are question marks with both guys…. but at Qb you must have a good citizen too and Mariotta fits that mold perfectly….and he can play a lil too!!!!!

  43. Jaws trying to raise ratings for ESPN on Draft day…they have been doing this for years. If everyone knows whose gonna be number 1, the ratings would be much lower.

  44. Jaws trying to raise ratings for ESPN on Draft day…they have been doing this for years. If everyone knows whose gonna be number 1, the ratings would be much lower.

  45. As an Eagles fan I am ambivalent about Chip Kelly’s big mouth. In a way he’s been a refreshing change from Andy Reid. In another way he’s no closer to a Super Bowl championship than Reid ever was so should really keep his mouth shut about Super Bowls; he knows no more about them than you or I yet.

As for the two top QBs in the draft – neither will win a Super Bowl with the team who drafts them. If you’re picking that high it’s because your entire franchise is bad and it’s bad in many spots besides QB.

  46. realdealsteel says:

Mariota has bust written all over him.
    ====================================

Winston has jail written all over him.

  47. Picking a QB (Mariota) who is not NFL ready first overall is pretty dumb. Especially when you have a need for a QB now. Winston would be the smart choice. Since Tampa has been making such bad choices, I wouldn’t be surprised if they picked Mariota.

  48. Yes, Mariota will win multiple Super Bowls because he not only can throw the ball, but he can also run it, can block for himself, can play defense all by himself, and can play all of special teams… all by himself.

  49. I would take Mariota. He’s smart and coachable and doesn’t have the big ego. Conceivable he could get to the Matt Ryan level and be a great face to the franchise for many years.

Winston may have a higher ceiling, but his penchant for off field problems could ruin a franchise for many years.

  50. So much for the “Flip Flop Parade” i’m waiting until the draft. I thought Mariotta was the better qb in the first place based on less “outside activity” risk, so i’m not drinking the Kool-aide, i’m thinking the Florida prospect for the Florida NFL team makes sense for the ticket draw but who really knows……………

    ————

Winston is going to win now? Like what other rookie QB? Ben Roethlisberger? I doubt it. No matter how good he is, he won’t be taking his team deep into the playoffs. It’s a development year no matter who they pick.

  52. If Kelly really believed that, I doubt he’d be saying it so freely. He sounds very comfortable with not having Mariota on his team, and that should give any team pause.

As for coaches, coaches want to win. Lovie Smith has to know that ownership will dump him in a second if they tire of him. He has no security in that job. Is that the kind of coach who’s going to lobby for a QB who’s never even played under center?

Then again, maybe the hype that Mariota is a “safe” choice would provide some cover for Smith if he ends up being a bust.

  53. This is a bad year to be needing a QB…I’ll just leave it at that.

  54. I for one would not take Winston just for the off field issues. Besides how many games did Winston play terrible in first half and get it together second half. If I were the Bucs I’d go defense.

  55. “And with the first pick the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select … we have a trade. The New York Jets are now on the clock.”

  56. Jaws is getting blasted in the comments for not subscribing to the accepted groupthink.

If there is a media consensus, you know one thing, it’s the wrong thing to do, think, or aspire to.

  57. Jaworski also believed Bon Jovie wouldn’t move the Bills to Toronto

he is either not too bright or very gullible

  58. Mariota is the next Vince Young/Sam Bradford. Maybe as good as Cam at some point in the distant future. And that’s not good enough. At all.

Winston is the next Jamarcus Russell/Johnny Football.

Bad year to be desperate for a QB. Too many great WRs and D guys in the draft this year to gamble on one of these 2 spread QBs in the top 10. I wouldn’t do it. Can anyone name ONE great QB who played the spread in college? Derek Carr has a chance but he’s not there yet. Anyone else? And please, I would certainly hope nobody would mention Cam’s name here. Really. He is far from great.

  59. Take it for what it is worth,
Tony Dungy’s son played with Mariota at Oregon and Dungy raves about the kid, comparing him to Aaron Rodgers. Maybe that will influence TB’s decision.
I just find it odd that both the top QBs aren’t attending the draft. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if MM is selected of JW. I wouldn’t want to be the team that makes Winston instantly rich.

  60. Winston will still go 1st pick. Mariota should slide down. QN that should be drafted second is Bryce Petty Baylor. Petty averaged 585 total yards every game under HC Art Briles and OC Phillip Montgomery who is now HC Tulane. Then thrif QB should be Hundley. Then Matiota who needs work under center and to learn how to read coverages and call playes in a huddle. Mariota is 2 years out IMO.
