Chiefs waive 2014 Steelers fifth-rounder Shaquille Richardson

AP

It’s not a great sign for a long NFL career when the team that drafts you in the fifth round in May drops you from the roster before the start of your rookie season.

That was cornerback Shaquille Richardson’s fate with the Steelers, however, and things aren’t looking up for him. Richardson signed with the Chiefs in February, but Kansas City has already decided to move in a different direction despite having 90 spots on the roster. The team announced Tuesday that they have waived Richardson.

The move leaves the Chiefs with Sean Smith, Phillip Gaines, Marcus Cooper, Sanders Commings and Jamell Fleming at corner. Smith’s recent guilty plea on DUI charges opens the door to league discipline that could leave him sidelined for the opening weeks of the regular season.

Richardson finished his college career at Arizona after being dismissed from UCLA along with his cousin and current Seahawks wide receiver Paul Richardson after they were arrested on theft charges that were later dropped.

  1. Waive before your rookie season, and then cut before the draft the following year by a team that needs depth at your position.
That’s quite a resume’ you are building there. I hope you finished your degree, you’re going to need it soon.

  2. Another STELLAR STEELER pick!
    See what i did there.

Wow dude!!! I bet it hurt your brain to do that. Sit down and pretend it’s playoff time…..unless it’s the first game the Bungals are done. See what I did there?

  3. This is a prime example of how Kevin Colbert sucks as a talent evaluator. Few of his draft picks ever pan out. Heyward finally came on but most of his picks are busts.

I lay some blame on Tomlin too.

  4. If you need a backup quarterback….
Give Vince Young a chance.. He wouldn’t cost a lot and He can still play at a HIGH level….
His career won/loss record is 31-19… He’s a 2 time Pro-Bowler with playoff experience and was voted 2006 NFL Rookie of the Year…..
The NFL is all about “WINS and LOSSES”…. and this guy WINS…. There is a big difference between Perception and Reality.
If you need a good backup QB… Bring in this guy and judge him as such.. A backup quarterback…

Give it up. Young couldn’t beat out any of Cleveland’s QBs last off-season and you saw how good they are. Although I’m beginning to suspect that you’re closely associated with Vince.

  6. I like how this offseason is shaping up… lol…Stillers fans are dumb enough to fall for it

  7. We haven’t heard the entire story, he either couldn’t read the Chiefs defense book or he got arrested again. Something had to have happened.

    Steelers are awful.

    =====================================
I guess winning the AFCN last season makes us awful? I think every team in the nfl would take that kind of awful. Haters hate on. At least talk about something you know something about.
