Manning may break Favre’s record vs. Packers or Colts

AP

Peyton Manning became one of the most prolific passers in NFL history with the Colts, but he may make NFL history against the Colts.

Manning has 69,691 passing yards in his career, putting him 2,147 yards short of Brett Favre’s all-time record of 71,838. As noted by Kevin Seifert of ESPN, if Manning gains passing yardage at his career average level this season, he’d surpass Favre in Week Nine. That’s when Manning’s Broncos are in Indianapolis to play the Colts.

Or if Manning gains yardage at a somewhat faster pace and breaks the record in Week Eight, he’d do it on Sunday Night Football against Favre’s old team, the Packers. Storylines galore.

That’s not a lucky coincidence for the NFL, it’s a part of the NFL’s strategy in putting the schedule together. The league likes to see significant achievements take place in big games, which is why records that can be forecast in advance — including Drew Brees breaking Johnny Unitas’s record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass, and Manning breaking Favre’s record for career touchdown passes — have frequently ended up in nationally televised games.

The NFL schedule-makers did their jobs again this time around. Now the league office will hope Manning does his part.

  1. Greatest of all time.

    Doesn’t cheat.
    Doesn’t kick opponents.
Doesn’t throw temper tantrums of the sidelines.
Doesn’t make contact with officials and cries when he gets hit.
Won a legitimate Super Bowl championship.

  2. Honestly, he probably cares more about this than winning a SB. The guy might be one of the greats, but he’s also one of the more selfish players on the field. Good luck getting him to play in a run heavy O.

  3. Really, really…..you jerks just pounce on any Manning story. Tell us all o great ones, what have you done with you life????

  4. I admit his skill, but I can’t stand Manning. All his theatrics at the line like waiting for a pitcher to pitch the darn ball. The Old Gunslinga Favre is my kind of player…..

And Manning has throw only one TD in each of those three Super Bowls. Think on that! Only one TD in each game and oh, did I mention that he only beat Rex Grossman? Hell, Brady threw 4 TD’s against the Seahawks alone. Sorry, but you’re a fool to think Manning is better than Brady
    #GOAT=Brady

  6. Such pretty statistics, and a complete failure in the post season. Well, with one exception. I’ll take Brady, all day.

  7. if he doesn’t break the yards record during one of those games, I am sure he will break the # of commercials in a single game record.

  8. Gonna be hard to break records while he’s rehabbing his inevitable injuries from his bed at the nursing home.

Get beat in playoffs, cries, and gets rule book changed in his favor – twice now.
Hangs receivers out to get killed – collie/welker.
Most one and done playoff record.

You want regular season wins, take Peyton
Playoff wins, take little brother Eli

  10. People love to knock Peyton for his playoff losses, but fact is he’s played just is well as Brady (88.5 career passer rating in the playoffs to Brady’s 89). Brady has just been on better teams that were much better coached, and everyone knows that. Peyton is one of the greatest QBs of all-time in many ways. He is also one classiest guys you’ll meet. I can’t fathom the hate for him.

  11. Scripting his own celebratory game of take-away and having his teammates practice it beforehand says it all about this punk.

  12. The record I am most interested in is how long will it be before he breaks Favre’s interception and turnover record? He needs 102 more to top that feat and if Manning manages to stick close to his average of 14 interceptions a year he should be able to be the NFL’s most prolific turnover machine in 7 more years. However, this hinges on the assumption that he is able to lose another 45 fumbles in the process.

I really am hoping this record falls to Manning because if he fails to pull it off I will have to conclude that Favre’s turnover record is one of those truly unbreakable records especially when you look at the previous record holder George Blanda who set the record with 277 interceptions paired with an additional 17 lost fumbles and it took him 26 seasons to do it.

  13. Why so much animosity towards Peyton ? So he hasn’t lived up to the hype in January/February. Its time to celebrate his career and stop nitpicking about every little thing.

  14. Peyton owes Bob Sanders the world.
If it weren’t for him returning, Peyton would be without a ring.
Still the greatest choker in NFL history.
Modern day Marino – wins all the big REGULAR SEASON games & always loses the big PLAYOFF GAME.

  15. What a chump. Guy gets the rules drastically changed in his favor and still hasn’t beaten Favre.

If it wasn’t for Cedric Benson and Rex Grossman’s mistakes he would not even have a single ring.

    Fantasy Football hero!

  16. One of the best of all time and I do love watching records get broken but let’s be honest, if the ’06 Bears had the foresight to keep starting Orton he’d be 0-3 on Super Bowl Sunday. Of course the appearance was facilitated by two of the sketchier late game PI calls you’ll ever see, but I digress.

And I’m sure it’s just a coincidence he was the other QB spear heading the campaign to loosen the NFL’s control of game day footballs…………
    Sure.

  17. Manning will hold a mid game celebration when he breaks another record that at this point is meaningless. Brady doesn’t need to do anything like that while he collects Lombardi’s and raises banners.

How is this even a discussion anymore? Brady just beat the team in the Super Bowl that made Manning look like Ryan Leaf. Manning lost to the soft Colts at home, Brady beats them by 30 a game. Give it up people!

  18. And he’ll still choke in the playoffs. Nobody cares about regular season stats except for fantasy sports fans. This game is all about winning…which Manning hasn’t been able to do in a long time.

He looks for the flag just as much as Brady.

More like “Rex grossman gave him a super bowl by being the worst QB to ever play in a super bowl” manning was mediocre at best.

  20. This is what I call “analysis.” That is the reason why I continue to visit this site – for the occasional nugget like this.

    Good job!

  21. The greatest regular season QB in NFL history will be crowned this season. However he will always be one of the worst playoff QB’s in NFL history. You can’t have it both ways

It wouldn’t be so bad if he didn’t have one of his worst playoff games in a bad playoff career in his only Superbowl win he managed. In other words he won his ONLY ring in a game the Colts won, despite Manning’s play

  22. Favre’s NFC Championship season with the Vikes was more exciting than anything Manning has done since his Colts caved on their shot at a perfect season way back when.

I’ll take exciting over stats any day.

  23. Long-time Bronco fan and love Manning, but don’t care about the records at all nor the nostalgia tour. Its about getting to the playoffs healthy and winning from there, end of.

Against Rex Grossman and oh yeah he had another poor playoffs (3tds to 7 ints)

The Colts won that super bowl inspite of Manning’s poor play because that year was the year of Bob Sanders and when he came back to that Colts team their D was one of the best that year.

  25. Amazing. They can quantify scheduling to coincide with records being broke but nobody can figure out what constitutes a completed pass

  26. Doesn’t cheat? How many other QBs do you know have 4 neck surgeries, can’t throw the ball 15 yards afterwards, go to a mysterious clinic in Europe, and then break the all time regular season TD record in their late 30s? Seems legit.

  27. Manning could break two of Brett’s all time NFL records That game..

All he has to do is throw 103 interceptions.

  28. If it’s against GB then we will know once and for all how the crowd feels against BrINT Fail depending on how loud the cheers or boos Manning would get if he breaks the record at Lambeau.

  29. Favre went out still having one of the strongest arms in the game.

This is a pathetic display of greed by Peyton Manning, absolutely pathetic.

  30. I don’t really care about records related to how long someone played. So what? He played a long time. Got so much money with the Colts that they had crappy defenses. Obviously he wanted to get paid more than he wanted to win. It’s hard to respect him because of that.

  31. Greatest of all time.

Clearly a severe case of “Brady Jealousy” going on here. Greatest of all-timers don’t have sub .500 records in postseason games. In any sport.

  32. He is another year older and faces three of last years top-ten defenses back to back to back.
If he survives to the Vikings game he will be damn lucky!

  33. Why such hatred for Manning. I can understand if he isn’t your favorite player, but come on. He isn’t killing dogs, taking steroids, beating prostitutes, raping, deflating footballs, or killing anyone.

  34. I don’t get all the disdain for Peyton. Never been a Colts fan or a Broncos fan, but he’s been great for the league. There are QBs a decade younger who can’t do what he is doing even now, as he reaches the end of his career.

“He’s playing for stats and records.” Did he tell you that himself?

But when QBs don’t go for 300+ and 4 TDs, they’re game managers…

I don’t get it, but go ahead and thumb me down for not regurgitating the same “playoff choker” diatribe.

I actually like Tom Brady, I just can’t stand the Patriots or Patriot fans. But somehow Manning’s greatness is a knock on Brady’s greatness to them so they feel the need to try & knock him any chance they get. It’s sad really. Why can’t you just admit they’re both great? If Manning wasn’t with that terrible Colts franchise for so long he might have 4 SBs too. Other than good WRs, he never had much talent around him & certainly never had the defenses that Brady won with. That’s not a knock on Brady, he’s an all time great. But he did have elite defenses in all of his SB wins.

  36. As a Colts fan, we’d be honored to have him break the Passing Yardage Record against us in Indy.

The man will always be a legend here and he is possibly facing his last season so why not witness him once again in person with Records on the line one more time.

Luck has already established his own emerging career so I actually hope another big battle between Luck and Manning happens under those circumstances. As always, he will be well received when he returns to his former home.

  37. “Why such hatred for Manning. I can understand if he isn’t your favorite player, but come on. He isn’t killing dogs, taking steroids, beating prostitutes, raping, deflating footballs, or killing anyone.”

Yes all those things are equal. Allegedly deflating footballs is comparable to torturing and killing dogs, taking steroids, murdering people, etc.

Patriots fans have dealt with Manning trolls for years and now that this team has the established greatest quarterback ever we are going to let everybody know about it.

Colts fan here too. I can’t really disagree w/you, and I will celebrate as the records continue to fall. However, watching TB in the 4th quarter of the SB break my Patriot-Hating-Heart yet again, I realized that the GOAT is a title Peyton doesn’t come close to deserving.

Manning cureses his linemen out every time he gets to the sidelines.
Manning was carried by Vinatari to his super bowl.
He has a sub 500 playoff record.

  40. These passing yardage marks are a joke. Even bad QB’s throw for lots of yardage in this Arena League the NFL has turned into.

File this mark that Favre holds and Manning will break where it belongs — in the garbage.

The fact is, neither one of them could hold a candle to the greatest QB who ever played — Johnny Unitas. If Unitas played with the rules in place today, he’d have blown away this mark by thousands of yards.

And just so you know, I’m not a Colts fan, I’m a Packers fan.

Maybe Tebow fan feeling hurt that Manning came to town and they are stuck with Tebow jerseys they spent $100 for?

  42. The scheme will have his numbers down.
Yalljust mad cause your QBs don’t have the mental grasp of the game enough to still be top 3 passers with a “rocket” arm.
    Stafford/cutler/folesvicktebowsanchez/gabbert

  43. Scripting his own celebratory game of take-away and having his teammates practice it beforehand says it all.
