Report: Packers to retire Favre’s jersey on Thanksgiving

Packers fans may be spending Thanksgiving night giving thanks to Brett Favre.

Reports ahead of Tuesday night’s release of the 2015 schedule have the Packers playing host to the Bears on Thanksgiving night and it seems the Packers have more than just a turkey dinner at the stadium planned for the occasion.

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers are planning to retire Brett Favre’s jersey that night as well. Favre will be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame in July and it’s been expected for some time that Favre’s jersey retirement would also take place at Lambeau Field during the 2015 season.

The drama and sharp words that accompanied Favre’s departure from Green Bay in 2008 made for an unhappy end to a great career with the Packers and his two years with the Vikings helped push the happy memories even further into the past, but all wounds should be healed on what’s setting up to be a memorable night in Green Bay.

  1. He was one of the players who brought personality and fun to the game. A great player deserving of having his number retired. He would never have left the Packers except they had the next hall of famer sitting on the bench.

  2. Brett favre is a legend and one of the best football players to ever walk on a field. He’s also a me first cancer in the locker room. I choose to remember his career for not wanting to practice and develop team chemistry in camp and holding teams hostage.

  3. I will watch that. Brett Favre was one tough sucker. Unlike the current Packer qb. Glad he had a chance to achieve his best season ever with the Vikings…

Lol. He will always be remembered for interceptions
    ——————–

Not by me. He will be remembered for turtling on Strahan’s “record breaking” sack.

  5. If there was every an appropriate day in the year to reconcile Green Bay and Favre, it would be Thanksgiving.

  6. The NFL has missed something since the Ol’ Gunslinger called it a career. I’ve never seen a professional athlete appear to have as much fun playing a game as #4 did. There’s never been and may never be a more exciting, enjoyable QB to watch every Sunday. Through the good AND the bad, the man entertained the hell outta me.

It’s about time #4. Welcome home! Go Pack!

  7. Congrats Brett. You are a major reason for the franchise rejuvenation. Enjoy the night and take lots of pics of the affair!

  8. Given the rivalry, the Bears game makes sense. Lord Favre’s jersey should be retired and he should be remembered as a Packer. I wonder if another year or two delay wouldn’t have eased the tension a bit though.

  9. Its going to be an epic night. If Bart recovers there will be 3 Super Bowl winning HOF qb’s on the field representing the most successful franchise in the NFL. We are truly blessed as fans to be this fortunate.

  10. Turkey, beer, Favre’s jersey being retired,Cutler with his usual pouty look after his 4th pick of the game. That will be an epic Thanksgiving in my house.

  11. Fitting that it will be on a night the entire world will be watching.
The entire NFL should retire the #4, just like the NHL retired Greyzky’s #99 LEAGUE-WIDE!

  12. Retiring Favre’s jersey is the only they can get people to watch this game. Cutler will throw 3-4 picks, Rodgers will play diva and come out in the forth quarter.

2-3 years from now, watch for the ‘ol gunslinger to make his debut as QB coach for the Vikings!!!

  13. Awesome! The whole reason I even started watching the NFL, Brett Favre is the greatest quarterback of all time! I love Aaron Rodgers, don’t get me wrong, but Brett will always be our Superman! I would love to see Aaron go and play his heart out this night, along with every other, and dedicate his performance to Favre. GO PACK GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Huge Packers fan here, and I’ll forever remember Favre for his interview on national TV shortly after Rodgers was drafted, in which Favre said he views Rodgers as a competitor and has no intentions of helping him (screw Aaron and screw the organization).

That day was the day I started pulling for Rodgers and knew Favre will forever be demonized by REAL Packers fans as a me-first player. The adoration Favre gets today is mostly from middle-of-the-road fans who don’t understand the nuances of football. Rodgers>>>Favre.

  15. Hopefully Bart Starr will have recovered by then, so we can have the 3 great QBs out there to celebrate…

Should make for a fun moment for Football fans.

  16. Try to remember it’s just a game, his career is over and his time at QB with the Packers were some of the most memorable for Packer fans. You cheer him during his moment and celebrate all the good memories. It’s only football.

  17. The best QB ever to play the game had his best statistical season as a Minnesota Viking and still couldnt get to the SB. Go figure.

  18. Has Favre apologized to Rodgers yet for the way he treated Aaron? What about the Green Bay fans who booed Rodgers during the training camp where Favre came back…. again.

I’m sorry, I must have missed that year.
You mean he won 4th MVP and finally brought a Super Bowl title to Minneapolis?

    Didn’t think so!

  20. Only a Mini fan would argue that best stats beats winning a Super Bowl.

And no disrespect to Favre or Rodgers, but Bart Starr was the best QB ever – and not just in GB.

  21. Yep. That’s why he carried a clip board for three years.

And Favre was third string for a year and then was behind Majkowski, which proves…?

  22. . He’s also a me first cancer in the locker room
    ———–
Where did you pull this nugget of info out of?? I’ve heard/read dozens of interviews from his team mates that said he was awesome in the locker room….always having fun and joking….but I wasn’t there….guess you were.

  23. There is no way the Packers don’t win that game. If the Bears somehow do pull off the upset, John Fox should win Coach of the Year no matter what else the Bears do this year.

  24. Unfortunately for pack fans-Rodgers will be hurt by then for a 3rd consecutive year, prompting the chant—“We want Brett”

    Oh, the humanity!!!!!!

  25. There’s always a Packer crybaby around to complain about Brett Favre. Just return the Lombardi trophy for that year or shut up!

Rodgers, the “current Packer QB” just got done beating Dallas on one leg in January in the playoffs. Rodgers has played through several injuries in his career. Only someone who is ignorant woould claim Rodgers isn’t tough. Also, Rodgers has already had FOUR seasons that were better statistically then Bret’s best with Minnesota. Stupid doesn’t even begin to describe you.

  27. If you’re hating on Favre you obviously don’t remember watching him play. Stats, rings, comparisons aside he was one of the most fun people to watch play the game. He deserves this recognition.

Rodgers should have won an Academy Award for that fake pretend I’m Favre my leg hurts crap. He tried to be Brett. Will never be Brett. Favre had a style and guts that will never be seen again. Fans of other teams admired and tuned him in. Fans hate Rodgers unless you live in Wimpsconsin.Call me stupid for I’m a REAL man. Like Favre…unlike you and Rodgy…..

Rodgers is tougher and more successful than any player in Viking history.

Hey tokyosandblaster – why are you obsessed with the Vikings?

  30. “I hope they un-retire it next season, then retire t gain, then un-retire it”

    Now that’s good.

Anyway, glad to see it happening.

  31. Few players deserve it more.

…That said, I’d pay good money to see him come out for the ceremony in a purple and gold #4 jersey, just for the crowd reaction. 😉

  32. Too bad he didn’t get to end his career with a SB with the Vikings !! He was getting pounded by the Saints in “Bounty-Gate”, enjoy your trophy you lousy dirty Patriot-cheating Wannabe’s. IMO

Lol. Probably for the same reasons your obsessed with the packers.

  34. Pervy we set the the standard for qb play. The trio of Starr, Favre, and Rodgers is probably one of the best ever. Besides what would a viking fan know about qb’s other than losing to the greats?Favre for one year was the best qb you ever had in your history and now you act like he was one of your home grown players. Are you that desperate for recognition? Try winning something for once then come and talk. He played for us for 16 years for Christ’s sake.

  35. Only a Viking fan would consider a season where Favre lost in the NFC Championship to be his best season.

Favre on the other hand still wears the ring with the great big G that he won at the end of what was truly his greatest season.

Further proof that the Lord works in mysterious ways. Like the poverty in the beauty of tropical locations. WI has nothing so you shall be blessed with eternal HOF QB’s….I’m not messing with that one….

  37. the 4 best qb’s in packer history will be on the field that night. starr, favre, Rodgers and clutchler

  38. Although I was a Packer fan since the 1960s, it was like “the day the music died” when Brett was sent to the Jets. Now he’s finally coming home, and I can hardly wait! Hope I can get a ticket!!

  39. I hope the Packers change their mind annually for about three years before they finally get it done or maybe just forget about it altogether.

There are 19 other QBs who have the same number of SB rings. For a lot of people in Green Bay, his act got old faster than he did.

Then I am glad his second best season got us our 3rd Lombardi Trophy……
