Report: Steelers-Patriots will launch the season

AP

We’re not quite sure where LeGarrette Blount and Le’Veon Bell will be on the evening of September 10.  But we know where they won’t be.

They won’t be at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts with the Steelers and the Patriots.

The Patriots running back and Steelers running back both are facing suspensions a Cheech-and-Chong incident from last summer, when they were pulled over with marijuana not long before the team was due to fly to Philadelphia for a preseason game.  And the Steelers and Patriots will square off for the first game of the regular season, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Blount was cut by the Steelers in November due to unhappiness with his role.  He cleared waivers, joined the Patriots, and won a Super Bowl ring.

The Steelers always seemed to be the best option, given that the Patriots’ home slate otherwise features the Eagles, Bills, Jets, Dolphins, Titans, Jaguars, and Washington — none of which made it to the postseason in 2014.

  1. SB winner vs a team missing their best offensive player and a suspect (at best) defense.

    Pats by 14.

  2. should be a good game. The Bills would also have been a good match up given that the Bills are supposedly much improved and they now have Ryan as their coach

  3. I’m a Patriots fan, and this game makes me nervous. That receiving corps for the Steelers should give the Patriots unproven secondary problems, and New England often starts off slow. Definitely wouldn’t surprise me if the Steelers win this one.

  4. Once again, the Paper Champions have the easiest schedule in the league. I really hope the Bills can field a team this year so there would actually be a 2nd good team in the AFC East for the first time in 15 years (one Jets team in 2009 not withstanding)

  5. Last time the Steelers opened in Foxboro against the World Champion Patriots: 30-14 Pats. Wasn’t really as close as the score indicated. 🙂

  6. after reading all the intelligent Pittsburg commenters wanting to get rid Antonio Brown (the best WR in the NFL the last 2 years), I pray hes still holding out then so they can see how sorry of a team the Steelers would be without him

    Pats by 50

  7. “Once again, the Paper Champions have the easiest schedule in the league”

You do know that the Pats had one of the toughest schedules in history last year in terms of playing division leaders and playoff teams right? Right.

Pittsburgh is 2-1 in the last 3 against NE.

    No… other way around.

    Patriots 55-31 in 2013
    Steelers 25-17 in 2011
    Patriots 39-26 in 2010

  9. I’m looking forward to turning this on and being excited to see football back only to be bored in 30 minutes because I realize I’m watching the Steelers vs. the Patriots.

  10. Well, won’t Brady be suspended for having the footballs deflated or did Kraft pay off enough people to make it go away? I’ll guess option #2.

Yikes my network belched at me. It’s the way the league schedules, the Patriots-Steelers game seemed like a given in the earlier part of the 2000’s because both teams won their respective division every year.

  12. The Steelers are 2-1 against NE in the last 3 meetings. The key is pressure Brady, that maypop defense will be exploited.

    Put the Green beer down.

  13. Naturally Kraft and his whipping boy made sure that one of the Pats toughest home opponents would be scheduled when the Steelers best offensive weapon was suspended.
    This is getting too predictable.

  14. Pats on the Road———-Jets:Bills:Dolphins:Giants:Cowboys:Texans: Broncos:Colts—–Get over your blind hate-may be toughest road schedule in the league.

  15. Bell and Blount may have a “Throwback Thursday” when these teams clash helmets…

  16. The Pats should win with the deflated balls and extra filming an all, but a lot can happen between now and then ladies so let’s temper our predictions so the taste of crow could be more tolerable.

  17. The steelers are 1-2 against the pats in the last three years and the last game was over before the middle of the second qtr. steelers fans have problems counting I guess

  18. Trying to put a happy face on this is like telling Mary Lincoln that at least the play was funny.

But the Steelers have the extra preseason game and can treat the fifth one like a bye week….and it does give them extra days before game 2….and NE will have a new secondary that Ben might exploit….and with the dreaded once every 7 years AFC West/NFC West schedule they can use the extra time.

Having said that Brady put up a Steelers worst ever 55 last trip in there for the Steelers. Well, they have to go there sometime.

I don’t think you quite have the meaning of paper champ down. All the Patriots do is win and the beat the former champ in the Super Bowl.

A paper champ is more like Pittsburgh in 2008 when Brady was out with a knee.

The AFC East hasn’t been as bad as you think either. 12 playoff games in that stretch for the Jets and 2 for Miami. Not terrible. The Patriots have basically the same winning percentage against the rest of the AFC and against the NFC that they do against their own division in the last 14 years.

  20. As soon as I saw that Blount was going to miss a game, I knew that this was going to be the opener. Given Raj’s love for the Steelers, I’m betting he’ll get the Ravens in for one of those other two games that Bell is out – – maybe get the Sehawks in for the third.

The schedule is built off a pretty simple formula. As soon as the regular season ends you know all the teams you will face next year.

You play the teams in your own division twice.

All the teams from another division in your conference (rotating divisions on a 3 year cycle).

All the teams from a division outside your conference (rotating divisions on a 4 year cycle).

Then for the remaining two games you play teams from the two divisions in your conference you don’t play that year. Teams are matched by where they finished in their division.

In other words if the Steelers had won their division more often they’d have played the Pats more often.

  23. For all of you that make lame comments like “oh of course they would schedule the Pats against Pittsburgh when the Steelers best offensive weapon will be out”, has it occurred to any of you that the Steelers have one of the biggest fan bases in all of football? So let me break it down for you like this- Defending SB champs vs team with a huge fan base= HUGE TV ratings which equal tons of $$’s for the teams and the league. Gee, does it all make more sense now?

  24. Steelers receivers vs that suspect D will keep this one close.

    ——————————————————–

Not if AB sits out. Still think you don’t need him? Still want to take a stand on “principle” and let him sit?

    Steelers start 0-1

    Go Oz

  25. I’ve seen this script before.

Okay, Pats, sweep your home slate and find a way to win 4 on the road and 12-4 should win the division.

You have summed up why accusing the Patriots was so smart on the Colts part. Once you make an accusation it doesn’t matter if it’s true. If they end up being found innocent then it’s a payoff, cover up or general conspiracy.

The Colts can’t really get in trouble either.

That AFC West / NFC West in the same season travel schedule is the worst, Likewise for AFC/NFC west Teams traveling back the other way.

They need to schedule more back to back road games when that happens so the team can stay out there between games and not have to travel back and forth.

No, bullcharger makes a good point. Assuming the Pats in 2008 win one more game with Brady than Cassell, they win the division outright and go to the playoffs.

  29. Pats don’t care who they play because they always seem to win.

Steelers are pissed because no Bell and they know they’re going to start 0-1.

Rest of the league is happy they won’t be the sacrificial lamb.

  30. If the Steelers don’t go CB/S in rounds 1 and 2 this year, Brady will make them wish that they had.

I do NOT want to see us take another OLB in round 1. We need DBs in a major way. Better DBs force the QB to hold the ball, which results in sacks.

Rigged! Heaven forbid New England start the season against a team that will give them any competition…….
    —————————

What a tool. When you’re the Champs, you get your first game of the season AT HOME. That means the league has to pick among the 8 teams on your home sked. New England had a tough sked last year. Very tough in fact. This year their draw is easier with the AFC South.

  32. Pats on the Road———-Jets:Bills:Dolphins:Giants:Cowboys:Texans: Broncos:Colts—–Get over your blind hate-may be toughest road schedule in the league

Steelers on the road…..Ravens, Bengals, Browns, Patriots, Chiefs, Chargers, Rams, Seahawks

  33. Okay, Pats, sweep your home slate and find a way to win 4 on the road and 12-4 should win the division.
    ================================

“Should win the division”? 9-7 usually can win that dog of a division. New England has had a free five wins for Brady’s whole career.

  34. Lots of jealous haters out there but when it comes down to it, you have to admit that the Patriots have been the best team year in and year out.

They were in 2014 and 2004 before that.

  35. Were the Steelers even over .500 last season?

Should be a cake walk for the Pats either way, always like to see Big Ben and co. take a beating.

  36. This being the opening night game was the worst kept secret going. Of course it was going to be the Steelers as the NFL will be making a big deal about Super Bowl 50 coming up.

So for opening night of course the league is going to feature two teams that have combined to play in 16 of the 49 played and have combined 10 Super Bowl wins between them. And both teams are among only 7 franchises to win back to back Super Bowls.

The Pats open the season as the winner of SB 49. Since the NFL want to make a huge deal out of SB 50 all season and Steelers are on their schedule this year how do you have any other team come in for this besides the team that is tied for the most Super Bowl appearances and has the most Super Bowl wins?

  37. The Steelers’ recent losses to the Pats have less to do with Brady and more to do with their quick slot recv’rs and the Steelers inability to cover them. The 5-7 yd quick hitter killed us. Enter the Remedy Shazier.

  38. Stop saying it was planned knowing that Bell would be out. Enough. Who else were they going to play at home? The Eagles? The Jaguars? It was never going to be a divisional game because of the other joke Thursday night divisional games played the rest of the year.

  39. How many non-Patriots fans (not in Vegas or the media) picked them to win the super bowl at the start of the 2014 season? Not many. After the Chiefs game that number plummeted to zero. Given the under-rating, the hate, and an organized smear campaign (aka Deflategate) the Super Bowl 49 victory was especially sweet.

So, how many of you non-Patriots fans are picking the Patriots to repeat?

  40. Pittsburgh is 2-1 in the last 3 against NE.
    ===
Why do people post stuff like this when pro-football-reference.com is just a click away? PIT is 1-2 for their last three against NWE. PIT scored a win on 30 OCT 2011, but lost on 14 NOV 2010 and 3 NOV 2013.

  41. 2-2 in the last 4
    ===
And 3-7 in the last 10 and 0-3 away. How long do you want to play that game?

  42. Should have been the Eagles or Bills. Enough of the Steelers, they’re old and tired!

  43. If the Steelers don’t go CB/S in rounds 1 and 2 this year, Brady will make them wish that they had.

I do NOT want to see us take another OLB in round 1. We need DBs in a major way. Better DBs force the QB to hold the ball, which results in sacks.

What makes you think that a bunch of rookies in the secondary will make a difference to Brady?
The Steelers will draft OLB, CB, WR, S, OLB, CB, TE and RB in the draft. Would not be surprised if an OT is in there somewhere instead.

  46. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand this should be an easy win because the World Champs are at home and, well, are a better team than a PED-less Steeler team.

On the other hand I think it’s a shame the NFL didn’t see fit to put a more deserving team to face the champs instead of a team that has clearly proven they are NOTHING when they’re not cheating or paying off the refs to win* titles.

Does not get better for the Steelers at home……..Ravens, Bengals, Browns, Colts, Broncos, Raiders, Cardinals, 49ers. Based on 2014, Steelers have the toughest schedule by far this year. Happened in 2008 when they won the whole thing.

  48. …. and 3 teams get to lose a home game wasting time going to London, especially a warm weather team’s fans that lose out the nice Miami weather in October. Everyone please BOYCOTT watching these games so IDIOT Goodell will QUIT sending teams to London PLEASE!!!

  49. Legarette Blount “won a superbowl” with 14 carries for 40 yards. I’d be surprised if he’s even on the roster come regular season. He’s all washed up. Brady’s comeback won that game.

  50. Pats #1 running back is out too so what’s with all the excuses already Steeler fans??!!
Pats lost both their corners, Wilfork & both Vareen & Ridley Akeem Ayers & Castillas…..so enough of all the crying….as a Pats fan I’m not making excuses, I’m actually very psyched to see at the team is going to look like this coming season…got one heck of a road schedule this year…I live in Colorado & my best friend is a HUGE Donkey fan so we’re always talkin smack & he’s got season tickets so get to see that game in Denver…..THATS the game I’m most looking forward to during the regular season(besides watching the Pats raise another banner that is)…
    GO PATS!!!!!

  51. With Brady and Belichek suspended in the opener for obstruction of the league investigation into the “deflategate” issue (come on guys, if it were no big deal why would it take this long … the league is suffering with the issue of their Super Bowl Winner being caught cheating … PR nightmare), it will make for a bizarre season opener …no first string running backs and only one first string QB and one head coach. LOL. You can’t make this stuff up.

  52. The Steelers always seemed to be the best option, given that the Patriots’ home slate otherwise features the Eagles, Bills, Jets, Dolphins, Titans, Jaguars, and Washington — none of which made it to the postseason in 2014
    ———–
In a nutshell….this is why the Pats are in the playoffs consistently. They usually have 6 built in wins before week 1. If they were in the NFCE (which the Giants are 7-1 in over the last 2 rotations), they’d be Dallas.

  53. Why do so many people think the Patriots are unbeatable? It’s hard to repeat as super bowl champs. The last team to do it was, however, the Patriots and Tom Brady, and that was ten years ago. There have only been 7 QBs in NFL history to repeat as super bowl champs, and Terry Bradshaw did it twice. Brady, Elway, Aikman, Montana, Bradshaw (2), Griese, Starr. Brady is in pretty rare company. It’s hard not to root for him because he’s such a good guy. When you look at the guys on this list, they are all good guys and good leaders. Montana is my favorite all time QB, but Brady is making a serious attempt at the number two spot. Big Ben has 2 rings and he’s still going strong.

Although I don’t typically agree with comments like this, with the Pats division the last 5-10 years, it has been Tom Brady vs the likes of Sanchez, Pennington, Tannehill (although he is on the upswing), Emanuel, Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, Thad Lewis, Chad Hanne, and the list goes on and on and on for all the turds the AFC East has put out there at QB. Not trying to discredit the Patriots, but they’re division hasn’t provided much competition in terms of getting into the playoffs.

A chicken bleep move by the NFL.

Number of playoff one and dones by the AFC East Division Winner in the last 10 years: 3

The Ravens lost the opportunity to open the season at home due to a game scheduled that same night between the Chicago White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles, in a stadium that shares a parking lot with the place where the Ravens play.

The Ravens reportedly prefer playing on the road for the traditional Thursday night opener involving the defending Super Bowl champion instead of playing at home later in the weekend, in part because they want the 10-day break that comes with playing in the first game of the year. Since they’ll have to play in Denver at some point in the 2013 regular season, they may as well get it out of the way early, with a full and complete opportunity to prepare for a rematch with Peyton Manning and company.

Also I’m putting my money on Brown playing week one the Steelers know his value to the team. But with that being said I’m looking forward to a great game.. Pats secondary against Big Ben in the steelers arguably #1 reviving group in the NFL and Tom Brady vs. the steelers new look defense with Keith Butler. Questions on both defenses look for a shoot out. Keep in mind the game is a long ways away still and anything could happen between that time. Injuries do happen plus the draft.

The NFL’s two favorites getting to start the season off. Might as well have NYJ vs. NYG playing on the opposite channel and Goodell can have all four of his favorite teams playing.

    No thanks

Too bad this includes the 2008 33-10 Steelers shellacking of the Patriots in Foxboro, the beating Brady so richly should have experienced but escaped, leaving his poor backup to absorb the pounding.

Harrison was unstoppable that day. There was nobody on the New England line that could block him. It wouldn’t have mattered who was playing QB, it could’ve been Montana, he wouldn’t have been able to complete many passes with pressure like that. In fact the whole Steeler defense was on fire that day, cracking Welker out of the game, delivering hard hit after hard hit and basically intimidating the entire New England offense.

That should have been Tom Brady taking the repeated smackings and sackings. The big loss in New England he should’ve experienced. But again, he got out of it like a sixth-grade nerd bringing in a note from mommy to avoid gym class. Yes, he was hurt that year. However, history will not forget, regardless of what stats some want to post.

The only reason Brady is undefeated vs. the Steelers in New England is because he avoided playing in ’08’s “Smack the Pats” Bowl.

    =============================
Better to dislike them than not care about them. Two of the winningest teams in the SB era and that’s why they’re playing in this game.

    ————————–
You could compile a similar list of turd QBs for every Div in the NFL. You could also compile similar lists of turd coaches and owners. With an occasional rare exception, the elite few are the same elite few year after year.

  81. Remember when the Pats won those 2 AFCChampionship gms at Heinz field? That was awesome. Hope they got refunds on the plane tickets to the SBowls. The big come back is; ‘well, we beat MCassel in 2008’, ROFL. The only reason the steelers got to the SBowl that yr is because Brady was out. Steelers have never gone through the Pats to win the SBowl. They flat out own them.

  82. Now lets see if the NFL counts this as the mandatory Thursday game for each team. My guess they do for the Pats but the Steelers will be forced to play another Thursday night game.

  83. Not a fan of either team but Steelers will get stomped! Patriots 55 Steelers 13
Steelers have no defense and their best RB will be home smoking dope.

WRONG! The Steelers would’ve crushed the Patriots that day regardless of who the QB was. Because Harrison and the other pass rushers were unblockable that day. We’ve seen what Brady does when he takes hits and pressure — I only feel robbed because I didn’t get to see Tommy Boy go down into the fetal position instead of his poor backup.

Trust me, Brady was up in the stands that day thanking his lucky stars he wasn’t absorbing the pounding. Watching Welker get knocked out, and Moss hearing footsteps and start dropping balls.

Steeler fans aren’t happy about beating Cassel, we only feel robbed that we didn’t get to see Brady get pounded that day in Foxborough.

  85. I can hear Bell and Blunt passing bong around singing “I was gonna play the opening game… But then I got high”

  86. Your a coward Craft & Rodger y not wait till both backs r in and see who woops on who
GO STEELERS. Brady is a punk

Love the Pittsburgh school system shining bright on PFT forums. Brady is a punk cuz he owns ur pathetic team. But at least hes not a rapist

  88. You have no idea what would have happened if Brady was in there. The Steelers have never laid a glove on him because Brady gets rid of the ball so quickly. That’s one of the reasons he’s so great. Cassell hadn’t started a gm since high school when Brady got hurt. Many people were surprised he made the team. He’s stand back there for 4-5 secs trying to figure out what to do. I’m sure the team was less than motivated, knowing they’re going nowhere without Brady. The Pats won their last 4 that yr to go 11-5 against an easy schedule. Congrats on your insignificant victory.

    Are people really this stupid?

  90. Takes a lot of pressure off Brady. This is game that will probably be won with a couple of field goals combined with Ben throwing his usual pick sixes. Ha!

  91. Nofoolnodrool says:

“The Pats should win with the deflated balls and extra filming an all, but a lot can happen between now and then ladies so let’s temper our predictions so the taste of crow could be more tolerable.”

The only three certainties in life: death, taxes and nofoolnodrool’s completely inane posts.

……….by cheating. There, I finished your paragraph for you. “Spygate: The Untold Story” tells you everything you need to know. Great reading….

  93. You should all be grateful that with your own season over, The Patriots gave you all such an incredible Super Bowl to watch on what amounts to a national holiday. The Pat’s represented, and came up LARGE. Their effort should be appreciated.

  94. Spygate book. Self published with his own money, by a guy that lost his license in the financial industry, because he couldn’t get a legitimate house to publish it. Cites no evidence or sources, other than a Vegas bookie and a fringe stat guy. Offers no proof of his ‘theories’. The premise of the book is statistically, the Pats are so good at home, they must still be cheating. We don’t know exactly what EAdams does, so it must be him, They go on to make the rest up, and even the author admits it’s just a theory.

Oh, I forgot, the author is a disgruntled fan of a rival team, either Jets or Steelers, I think.

If anyone likes those kind of books, there are a couple of other ones about the US Gov’t being behind 9/11 and Obama being born in Kenya. Pick them up at a yard sale near you. 3 for a buck if you wear a tinfoil helmet.

Wrong again. I have personally witnessed two games where the Steelers easily handled Brady and his so-called “quick release.” All they had to do was put consistent pressure on him. That’s how I know the outcome with Brady in there would have been no different that day.

Pats fans like to act like Brady’s never lost to the Steelers, like they can’t lose with him in there, but that’s not true. The difference in the games is whether or not Brady has time for a sandwich and a cup of coffee back there. In the wins he’s been pampered with time. In the losses, he’s been hassled. In fact — listen closely — I not only know the Steelers still win that game in ’08 had Brady played, I know it would have been a WORSE beating, because Cassel is Usain Bolt compared to a duck-footed slow poke like Brady. Without the line being able to block Harrison and the LBs, Brady goes down probably 6 times. A total sitting duck ripe for the pounding. I doubt he even finishes the game.

Pats fans like to laugh about Brady suckering Polamalu, but I laugh just the same thinking about Deshea Townsend suckering Tommy and running back another pick-six. In games like those, Brady was pressured, and contrary to your wrongheaded opinion, his “getting rid of the ball” meant nothing. They still lost.

Again, any game where the Steelers have pressured Brady, they’ve won. And never did they bring the heat like that day in ’08. When Tommy Brady escaped the beating he so richly deserved. And provided Pats fans a whining, crying excuse for the loss afterwards.

  96. “In a nutshell….this is why the Pats are in the playoffs consistently. They usually have 6 built in wins before week 1. If they were in the NFCE (which the Giants are 7-1 in over the last 2 rotations), they’d be Dallas.”

    ——————————————-

Giants fans should never post anything, especially when you go 22-26 in the last 3 years and go home before the playoffs start.

You sound foolish. The Pats are in the playoffs consistently, and go deep, because they’re good. No more, no less.

  97. The steelers are going to have to pull out every trick in the book to even have a chance at winning this game. Even Tomlin may have to bring back his “I’m looking at the jumbo screen to impede Jacob jones from scoring a kickoff TD” move to try and win this game

    Patriots fans R
    Go steelers Hahhahahhahahahahah

  99. In the last 10 yrs. the Pats(w/Brady) are 5-1 against the steelers and have averaged 35 pts/gm. I don’t care what any steelers fan thinks he saw or how he spins it. Case closed.

I just hope the Pats don’t get caught looking ahead to Buffalo when the play the steelers.

  100. Belicheat & crybaby Brady suspended for the year for cheating in 2014…

That’s how it should be ,but we all know Rodger favors his girls they probably just get there hands spanked

  101. Do you think the Steelers will hire Dr Rydze back for this game? We all know his “help” is the only reason the Steelers were any good in recent years. Just witness what Tebow did to them in the playoffs when they had to try and win using their talent instead of Dr Rydze’s “help”

  102. Does anyone know what’s going on between the Jets Tampering and Underinflated Footballs?

This is only my opinion but I think it’s going to look like it’s all on the NFL Front Office, the Colts and the Ravens for a failed sting operation. And from what I’ve read and heard there were not any kind of rules followed as in regards to inflation of those balls.

Plus, after hearing and reading (ad-nausem), the pros and cons of what Robert Kraft said before the Super Bowl that he demands, (expects), an apology…Kraft is a smart businessman…If he went in guns ablazin’ then he KNOWS his team will be vindicated.
I just can’t believe someone would do this with everything on the line without knowing something.

  103. The schedule is computed by won/loss, division, confererece, etc…And usually it works out…sometimes it doesn’t…The schedule is usually determined on a 3 way inter-conference matchups…I think! Usually computed 2/3 years in advance?!.

  104. Anyone else think it’s interesting that the Jets personal lapdog reporter Manish Mehta is the one that appears to have been given a scoop from the NFL front office?

Let’s think for a moment. Is there anyone in the NFL front office that has ties to the Jets and a potential pro Jets bias?

Anyone who might have initiated a fabricated deflate gate sting the very day that the Patriots filed tampering charges against the Jets – a move that clearly infuriated the Jets to the point where they filed their own frivolous counter tampering charges against the Patriots?

Logical voices of reason know that this NFL fed scoop about a Patriots opening game to a Jets reporter is further evidence of a Mike Kensil pro Jets bias in the NFL offices

It should be no surprise when the Wells report names Kensil prominently in the false deflate gate sting given his clear animosity towards Belichick for leaving Kensil at the altar without a head coach when he was Jets president

  105. Because the NFL always has “strange things that happen” which enhance viewership and mystique, Steelers 28 Patriots 24.
That said, no one has a more difficult schedule than the Steelers. I say 7-9 this year and without a secondary, that may be too kind.

  106. The Patriots ball boy might want to watch out when he enters the bathroom to deflate the game balls on opening night. Big Ben might be waiting inside with a healthy dose of GHB.

  107. Between Tomlin’s “misplaced” feet and Brady’s “mysteriously” deflated balls — it’s going to be the Cheaterbowl.

  108. Steelers- Patriots have split the last four games 2-2. I would say if Bell were playing this might be a good game. Its gonna be tough though without him. Our offense is different when he isnt in there. No question about it. I think the Steelers lost too much on defense. If this may have been played later in the season when both teams are clicking and Bell is back. I think this Steelers offense with those receivers could pose big problems for the Pats. Bell, Brown, Wheaton, Bryant and Miller. Yeah this offense should be scary good by season ends.
