Oddsmaker installs Patriots as biggest favorites of Week One

AP

The high temperature in Las Vegas is expected to peak around 80 degrees on Wednesday, and you are unlikely to see anyone wearing Santa hats or reindeer-emblazoned sweaters on the Strip, but for certain folks, Wednesday might feel a little like winter in the desert.

After all, the NFL point spreads are back on the board, available to be bet.

According to VegasInsider.com, the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook has already put up lines for every Week One game after Tuesday’s schedule release.

The biggest favorites of Week One? The Patriots, who are favored by six points over the Steelers in the NFL regular season opener.

The Cowboys are the second-biggest favorites of Week One. Dallas is favored by 5.5 points against the Giants in the first Sunday night game of the season.

Seven teams are road favorites in the opening week: Green Bay (at Chicago), Indianapolis (at Buffalo), Miami (at Washington), Carolina (at Jacksonville), Seattle (at St. Louis), Cincinnati (at Oakland) and Philadelphia (at Atlanta).

  1. Dallas should have been the biggest favorite, but the rest looks okay. New England got a cupcake schedule.

Pats will go 15-1 with this cream puff schedule…

    ———————

And their one loss will be to my Colts!!

(ok even I don’t believe that one!)

  3. Steelers are done before the season even begins. Love it.

  4. The Green Bay @ Chicago game won’t be that close, but the over/under sounds about right. The Packers are going to own the Bears as long as Cutler is in Chicago, but they won’t be hanging the kind of points on the Bears D that they have been in years past. Fox and Fangio will see to that.

  5. “and Atlanta (at Philadelphia)”

Typo, Philly is favored at Atlanta

Interesting to see 3 games at 53+ o/u

  6. Lines out this early? Why not the 2016 games as well while you’re just taking a wild swing at it?

  7. let me get this right, players, coaches or owners can’t gamble on games but the NFL embraces Vegas “odds makers”, what a joke. Oh and the pats better not overlook the steelers or their gonna start their season off 0-1!

  8. Considering it’s a first placed team schedule, it’s crazy how soft the Patriots schedule is.

Compare it with the Hawks the last couple of seasons.

  9. The Colts favored at Buffalo in week one is pretty funny, I’m going to take that bet. They can’t stop the run at all and that’s all the Bills are going to do. The defense will be better than last year too. Bills by 17! As for the Pats, Steelers fans will be in for a long night.

That’s super easy money for Vegas!!!

  11. It’s funny how all of you talk about cream puff schedules??? Must be the same people that think winning the off season means something? No one knows now who well or poorly any of these team will play.

  12. Strength of schedule is pretty meaningless due to personnel changes year over year and the fact that you still have to beat good teams in the playoffs to win the Super Bowl, which should be the goal for most teams.

But hey, it’s April, I guess we have to talk about something.

  13. Raiders will beat both the Bengals and Ravens to start 2-0 for the first time since winning the AFC championship in 2002. Raiders are riding a three game winning streak in Oakland and are trending upward! #justwinbaby

  14. The Bears were atrocious at home last year. If they can actually beat the Packers in Soldier Field on opening day, the new John Fox regime gains a lot of credibility right out of the gate.

  15. Lets analyze the Patriots 6 point spot. The Pats are the Super Bowl champs, right? They are playing at home, right? Normally home field advantage is good for about 3 points, right? The Steelers will be playing without Bell, right? The Steelers defense is a major question mark, right?

AND THE SPOT IS ONLY 6 POINTS??!! The bookies are not stupid, the want the money on thecPats. Steelers may just win outright.

  16. Considering Bell won’t be playing and Brady’s success vs. the Steelers in Foxborough, that’s not an unreasonable opening line.

Besides, it’s not like Tommy will be facing the ’08 Steelers defense… oh wait, I forgot, he got out of facing it and left his understudy to absorb the pounding that day. But who could blame him, seeing how his whole offense got smacked around that day and his line couldn’t block Harrison to save their lives. You know Tommy was breathing a big sigh watching that one from the owner’s box.

Hey, if the ’11 Steelers defense could hold Brady to 198 yards passing like they did, imagine what that championship unit would have done!

Nice job by Tommy escaping the beating he had coming to him that day.

  17. Its pretty amazing how many people have absolutely no idea that the formula for determining EVERY teams schedule EVERY year was put into place in 2002. Its pretty simple. 2 games each against division opponents (6), one game each against each team in a division in the conference rotated every year in the same order (4), one game each against each team in a division in the other conference (4) and 2 games in your conference based on your team’s standing last year for a total of 16 games.

Even the location of the games are predetermined on a rotational basis except the 2 games in the conference that are based on your team’s record last year, where the location is based on the record. There are only 2 games your team’s schedule that you can’t predict for years to come and that is because you can’t predict your team’s record opposed to other team. The only thing the nfl has control of year to year is date and time

I have noticed that posters that complain about the schedule tend to post stuff that isn’t particularly bright, which, I guess, is nothing to be surprised about, unless they want to take the issue up with the people that created the formula back 13 years ago.

Roethlisberger against a Patriots defensive backfield without Revis and Browner. Six points makes sense. Just bet the over.

  19. I’m as far from being a Viking fan as a person can be, but I’d sure be tempted to go with Minnesota in that game against the Niners.

  20. This is the hardest week one survivor pick I can remember. I guess you have to pick the pats to win straight up?

  21. Yea well..at Patriots…to kick off the season…Bell is out..mabye brown with this contract stuff..its no secret our defense is one of the worst in NFL..cant argue. But, we will make playoffs..

  22. I would take those odds. New England lost a lot in free agency and I think the Steelers can beat them.

  23. Pittsburgh is going to donkey kick the muffins right off of the “freshly vacated wins” Patriots. #NeverForget #DeflateGate2014SeasonFrauds

you think you would – but really, you know you won’t.

  25. “Pats will have a hard time making the playoffs this year.

    Bank on it”

Lol yeah like we haven’t heard stuff like this for 15 years and counting.

Not to mention whenever someone uses the phrase “bank on it” they are invariably never right.

  26. Not to mention whenever someone uses the phrase “bank on it” they are invariably never right.

    Book it.

  27. Well good the steelers like the underdog role. If they lose they were supposed to but if the steelers win, vegas and a whole lot of people betting against them look like idiots.

  28. A lot depends of course on whether the Steelers have Dr Rydze back on the payroll. We all know that team is nothing without cheating or paying off the refs, they have proven that over and over again. Perhaps they are tired of being exposed every year as a weak team without the PEDs so they decided to start the cheating again.

  29. What are the odds of the Patriots ball boy getting a dose of GHB from Big Ben when he hits the bathroom to deflate the game balls on opening day?

Call back when the Steelers lose a first-round pick for cheating like the Patriots did a few years ago.

  31. I wonder what the odds will reflect after Belicheat & Bradycheat are suspended for the year for cheating in multiple games in the 2014 season?
