Rick Spielman: Cordarrelle Patterson has “really grown up a lot”

Getty Images

The Vikings changed the complexion of their receiving corps this offseason when they traded for Mike Wallace and released Greg Jennings and it would change even more if Cordarrelle Patterson made the switch from intriguing talent to consistent performer.

Patterson showed off that talent in the season opener last year when he ran for 102 yards and a touchdown, but he only scored once more all season and his production as both a receiver and kick returner dropped from his rookie year. Patterson said at the end of the year that he’d do anything he could to improve this offseason, a process General Manager Rick Spielman thinks begins with realizing that thriving as a pro is about “more than just relying on your athletic skill set.”

Spielman said he thought Patterson was progressing on that front this offseason.

“There’s no question about the physical ability there. I think Cordarrelle has really grown up a lot,” Spielman said, via the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “I know what he has done this offseason dedicating himself to being the best receiver he can be, and how serious he is taking that, we’re very excited about the future with Cordarrelle.”

There’s no question that the Vikings will be a more dangerous team with a more productive Patterson in the offense, but any talk of offseason growth has to be balanced by actual examples of it on the field. We’re a long way from seeing Patterson and the Vikings in action at this point in the offseason and he’ll remain a question mark until that changes.

This applies to all fans as well…….I’m not saying who they are……..because there are a lot of sensitive people on this site and they lack a sense of humor and I don’t want to offend anybody.

    Have a nice day.

  2. It will be interesting if he has a good year. When he was drafted, the lavender lunatics told us all about how great he was.

Then he had a rough year last year and they wanted to run him out of town.

What will they do if he has a good year this year? What if he leads the team to beating the Vegas odds and winning 9 whole games?

  4. The Vikings gave up 4 picks to acquire the 29th choice in the 2013 draft. In the end the Patriots received :

    LB Jaime Collins
    CB Logan Ryan
    WR Josh Boyce
    RB Legarette Blount

Patterson is making Spielman look bad for investing so heavily in him.
    .

  5. Cordarrelle hasn’t panned out like the Vikings and their fans had hoped.

That said, Spielman is just talking him up trying to get better trade value for picks in a matter of days……..

  6. The honest assessment is that Patterson is a dud. Speilman gave up way to much to draft him in round 1.

This is his last chance to prove himself. I’m not optimistic.

Unlike some vikings fans, and most packers fans, I don’t blindly think that everybody on the team is the greatest, when the truth is they are not.

  7. Nothing surprising here. The Vikings do all of their improving during their annual off-season championship runs.

Spielman and the Turner goons tell the fanbase that their players are maturing, running faster, catching everything in sight, and that they’re excited about the upcoming season. It’s a weak ploy to sell tickets over the summer months.

But once the season starts, the inevitable disappointment will set in. And the Viking apologists will be out in full force with excuse after excuse about why their team is failing to win games once again. If I didn’t know any better I’d swear I was clairvoyant when it comes to this team.

  8. As a Bears fan, the thought of this kid ever putting it all together scares me silly. That being said, his status with Zimmer has always seemed shaky at best and I think if he doesn’t take a big step forward this season the Vikings will be cutting bait and moving on from him for 2016.

Henry Ford went bankrupt twice in the automobile business before finally started one that was successful. First time he failed was with his “Detroit Automobile Company” and the second time was the “Henry Ford Company”.

So if you believe Ford is a good source of wisdom after the two complete failures of automobile companies he started, then you have to give Patterson time to produce after just one bad season.

I sincerely hope that Patterson has worked hard this off season and produces on the field to the level of his natural ability.

  10. Chicago is a great town.. Minnesota is a lot of fun, Detroit is making a comeback but Green Bay????
A town where woman have hairy backs and the sheep are scared to death.

  11. It had to hurt when expansion teams and perennial doormats like New Orleans, Tampa and Seattle won a Super Bowl before you did. 0-4 Baby. You can run but you can’t hide…

I know, right? In my defense, though, it’s hard for even me to believe that the over/under for Viking wins this year is a paltry 6.5. Especially with all the crowing from the lavender lunatics about this big dynasty they’re building.

  13. Just shows the incompetence of Spieladope giving up all those picks for a bust that probably has the mental capacity of an 8th grader. Another example why some teams sit atop the division while others are perennial losers.

  14. Patterson was a stud his first year and he only played toward the end of the season. They got him the ball and he did his thing. Last year he attempted to do his thing, but under conditions of trying too hard. He wasn’t in the game as much, because he needed to work on the right technique. People calling him a bust after two years of college ball, a great rookie season and then not adding up to an all pro last year are fools. If this kid gets his fundamentals down he’s a stud.

  15. I guess we’ll find out this week if Spielman really believes in Patterson or not. If he does, they can draft a CB or LB in the first round and not pick up a WR until day 3.

  16. Boy I’ll bet the Seahawks really regret trading for Percy Harvin instead of staying put at #25 and drafting this guy.

    Ok not really.

  17. spielman is the same guy that also drafted Xavier Rhodes, Anthony Barr, Harrison Smith, Sharrif Floyd and Bridgewater.

I’m sure a lot of teams picking in the top 15 would be happy to have drafted those 4-5 guys in the last 2-3 years. Cornerstones.

  18. Patterson is just the sort of hapless and tasteless player they love in MN. He’s as fast and unproductive as Troy Williamson.

  19. Corduroy Patterson can grow up all he wants. It still doesn’t change the fact that he’s too stupid to learn the playbook or run NFL caliber routes. Those same questions existed before Spielman gave up a ton to draft him and you’ve seen the end result of his stupidity.

    —————————-

Who was responsible for the Vikings most humiliating NFCCG defeat where they lost 41-0 and couldn’t even score a point. That has to be the WORST.

  21. Despite the rough patch, the Vikings would return to the playoffs again for the fifth straight year. After easily beating the Saints in the Divisional game 34–16, they were humiliated 41–0 by the New York Giants in the Conference Championship, and to top that, Robert Smith retired at the end of the year, after only playing eight NFL seasons

Too bad the Vikings fans have not grown up as well. I have never seen a more lame, immature group as these fans of the leagues most pathetic franchise.
Hope every year fades to another disappointment. Just as as they experience in all aspects of life.
    Never won a championship.
    Never will.
Please just eliminate this sorry franchise, so these simpleton fans can hope for something else….like maybe personal success. Nah, they will just fail every year at that also

What’s with the personal attacks? By pretty much any standard of quality of life MN ranks right near the top. It’s really kind of sad that you have to resort to bullying others. Your insecurity is blatantly obvious. Just cheer for your team and let others cheer for theirs.

  23. Let’s face it, every draft pick is a gamble. With Patterson’s athleticism it was worth the gamble. Some pan out, some don’t. He still has time to become a starting-caliber player and all we fans can do is hope.

  24. 7 first round draft picks in the last 3 years and this guy has to be one of the biggest busts out of all of them.

Is it any wonder Spieldope still retains his job.
    Shameful!

  25. “Green Bay???? A town where woman have hairy backs and the sheep are scared to death.”

Being a bully goes hand-in-hand with being a loser. And no attempt at humor whatsoever, just insults and putdowns? That’s just lazy.

But I guess that’s all you have. That’s the only desperate ammunition you have. Your team provides no bragging rights on any level, so you resort to the stuff second-graders thrive on. But when grown-ups do it, they’re called losers.

    The Packers own the Vikings.

  26. When the packlers flop again, their childish fanbase will have another excuse for it with a heavy dose of injuries and those evil refs.. Count on them to troll wnything Vikings more than ever.

  27. I would say that Patterson is the worse first round WR draft pick in the Vikings history except it wouldn’t be true.

That honor belongs to Troy Williamson for two reasons, first he was #7 overall vs. 29th or whatever the number was for Patterson. Secondly and most importantly, the Vikings could have drafted Aaron Rodgers with the Williamson pick ( and had another chance with the 19th overall) but missed on both chances. The Vikings single biggest problem over the last 10 years has been lack of a productive QB. I tend to think Rodgers could have solved that issue if the Vikings were smart enough to draft him instead of Williamson.

  28. “So if you believe Ford is a good source of wisdom after the two complete failures of automobile companies he started, then you have to give Patterson time to produce after just one bad season.”

I never said anything about Henry Ford being a success or a source of wisdom. I just think all the talk about how great Patterson is should occur after he does something memorable, not before. This “all hat, no cattle” attitude runs rampant with Viking fans and players alike, I guess.

  29. Come on purple trolls give us something football related regarding the queens that can be proven instead of all the bluster and bravado which comes back to bite you. It sounds as bad as Rex Ryan with all his wait til next year crap and then he has the foot in the mouth literally after about week 6.

As far as all the vikings 1 St round picks how has it helped? The stupidity that you haven’t grasped is trading up all the time is a desperate move which rarely works. It hasn’t gotten the vikings to .500 and how many were recognized around the league last year with a pro bowl nod which in the past has been the only thing you could brag about? The exact count was zero. Face it Spieladope was a failure before and is again.

Here’s to hopinng one day you will grow up and quit trolling Viking articles like a 4th grade school kid.

  31. The Packers traded down in the draft then acquired Jordy, who was also a better route runner, than Patterson seems ever will be. Also Jordy didn’t need to get plugged in right away, because there were other WR’s like Jennings and Driver who were getting a LOT of targets and starts.

When trading a 2, 3, and 4. To move up into the first round Patterson has to be the 2nd coming of Jerry Rice. So yes he IS doomed, to be a bust based on that alone, can he improve YES, but he will NEVER be worth what the Vikings gave up.

What does that have to do wit Cordarrelle Patterson being an awful draft pick?

How do you know anything about GB or their ladies? You try taking one home in desperation since the ones where you live will go on a date with you?

  33. Anyone who has an eye for talent can plainly see that Patterson is legit. The dude has moves that I have not seen before. Throw on his college tape, and your jaw will drop. He will emerge this year as a dynamic weapon.

  34. And with another quote from Rick this week, “We’re really looking forward to the 2016 season. I know it’s disappointing for our fans that we have already been eliminated from the playoffs this year, but Teddy and Cordarelle are really growing up fast, like Toys ‘R’ Us kids!”

    _________

You know who else had moves that people never saw, before? Reggie Bush… those kind of 6hings don’t really translate well to the NFL because the speed defenders have.

Patterson might improve. teams don’t trade away what the Vikings did expecting to get a KR. He also got on the bad side of Two coaching staffs l ready. He will never be worth what was given up for him
