Broncos plan to draft a quarterback

AP

Quarterback is not a need for the Broncos in 2015, with Peyton Manning remaining in Denver. But with Manning’s retirement after this season a strong possibility, quarterback will be a need for the Broncos soon.

That’s why, according to Mike Klis of KUSA, it’s a virtual certainty that the Broncos will take a quarterback at some point in Rounds 2-7.

The big question is whether that quarterback will be drafted on Friday or Saturday. If the Broncos use a second-day pick on a quarterback, that’s a bad sign that they’re not sold on Brock Osweiler as Manning’s successor. The Broncos made the surprising decision to select Osweiler in the second round in 2012 despite having Manning in the fold, and so far Manning’s presence has kept Osweiler on the sideline except in garbage time. The Broncos drafting a quarterback in the second or third round would suggest that they doubt Osweiler will be the man for the job going forward.

But if the Broncos draft a quarterback on Day 3, that’s more a sign that they want depth and competition at the position. The Broncos also spent a 2013 seventh-round pick on a quarterback, Zac Dysert, and a late-round rookie would compete with Dysert for the third-string job behind Manning and Osweiler.

What we know for sure is that Manning is the starter for now, and that John Elway is getting prepared for a time in the near future when Manning is gone.

  1. Not only should the Bronco’s draft one: so should the Cowboys, Packers, Chargers, Bears, and Cardinals…just of the top of my head…

  2. @nflrulebook… WHAT???? QB was a need to start grooming last year!!!

Brock is not the next ‘true’ starter… although now, he may HAVE to be the starter, leading to a 2016-17 struggle.

    That’s on John and Co.

  3. Drafting a QB doesn’t mean they don’t have confidence in Osweiler. QB is the most important position on the team, and the backup QB might be second most important. They really won’t know too much about Osweiler until he faces live bullets.

  4. I’m convinced most of the NFL has no idea how to properly develop a QB. How can the league have so much poor play at the position? Just a few outliers seem to be quality QBs that rise above whatever “coaching” they receive. I suppose it doesn’t help that all of these pass rushers are clearly on the juice/HGH and coming to rip your head off. It is more important to find a QB with intangibles than psychical skill, but that is very hard to peg down. You can’t review/measure/record numbers in a combine setting on intangibles but it is pretty clear a QB with incredible intangibles is more important than a QB with all the raw skills.

  5. As a Broncos fan I’m wondering what harm it would’ve done to have had Tebow apprenticing under Manning the past 2 seasons.

  6. I think it’s disappointing to draft Brock Osweiler in the second round and not see what he’s got. There’s no way he was drafted for insurance because he was probably the rawest QB in that draft class, if insurance was the case they could have just selected Russell Wilson…

I haven’t seen any legitimate issues with Brock Osweiler yet, he looked good in last years preseason. I think the only reason why they want to draft a QB is to add competition once Peyton Manning leaves… there is absolutely no reason for them to get rid of Brock Osweiler just yet.

  7. “Quarterback is not a need in Denver in September and October 2015. After that Denver needs some serious help.”

Manning has the 14th highest all-time career postseason QB rating above guys like Farve, Young, Aikman, Elway, Staubach, Bradshaw, well, the list goes on.

  8. Well a lot depends on where they draft a QB. If its 5th or 6th round and I’m a Broncos fan, I’m fine with that as a deptjldepth move. If its 2nd round (again) then I’m pretty pissed cause it means they whiffed on Osweiler. Throwing good high round picks after bad at the same position is a great way to get bad in a hurry.

  9. Wait until next year when Eli Manning contract is up and trade for him. That is your only hope to win the AFC as long as Brady and Belichick are around. As a Patriots fan, I admit Eli owns us.

  10. BO has played just a year and a half of college and by next season will be 4 years removed from when he was drafted without any serious playing time. Which GM wouldn’t keep drafting QB’s based on this circumstance?

  11. Manning has the 14th highest all-time career postseason QB rating above guys like Farve, Young, Aikman, Elway, Staubach, Bradshaw, well, the list goes on….

Except all these QB’s were better playoff performers than PM. No one has more one and done’s (especially at home) than PM. Not bashing as I cheer for Denver but it is the facts.

  12. Obviously, Elway wants a QB who is akin to his own image. I don’t wanna get into trouble here, so will just leave it at that lol

  13. It may or may not signal something on Osweiler.

Isn’t Osweiler a free agent after this year from his four year rookie contract?

If so the Broncos might want to protect themselves as they could lose both after this year. Maybe the Broncos want him, but aren’t sure, and don’t want to dole out a huge second contract without seeing him on the field in games that matter.

Even then you might want another guy who can come in next year and know the system if Osweiler isn’t the guy.

Either way with an aging Manning and a soon to be free agent (or at the least restricted free agent), it would be wise for the Broncos to try to get a QB.

  14. Wasted pick if they do, I say. If they shore up and replenish, constantly, their o-line, the right quarterback will come to them when available. Who knows, maybe they already have a good qb to replace Manning. I remember when there were so many doubts about Aaron Rodgers, by some, his career was dead way before Favre shed a tear. I just don’t see greatness out of these recent and latest crop of quarterbacks. What do you expect though?, they all grew up listening to Justin Beiber.

  15. “Not only should the Bronco’s draft one: so should the Cowboys, Packers, Chargers, Bears, and Cardinals…just of the top of my head…

Add the Saints to that list.

  16. “Broncos plan to draft a QB”. Really? Are you certain they’re telling the truth? What if I told you I had a bridge for sale? Do you really think NFL teams are giving away their draft plans?

  17. “But as a Patriots fan” is a troller…ignore them..gives as true fans a bad rep!!

  18. Smart move. This is no longer 27 year old Peyton. He throws lots of “wounded ducks” these days. As he heads out into a Colorado pasture, the Broncos must find “the next Elway.”

  19. If you need a backup quarterback….
Give Vince Young a chance.. He wouldn’t cost a lot and He can still play at a HIGH level…. His career won/loss record is 31-19… He’s a 2 time Pro-Bowler with playoff experience and was voted 2006 NFL Rookie of the Year….. The NFL is all about “WINS and LOSSES”…. and this guy WINS…. There is a big difference between Perception and Reality.
If you need a good backup QB… Bring in Vince Young and judge him as such.. A backup quarterback…

  20. I forgot they drafted Osweiler in the 2nd round. That’s crazy. Maybe not as batpoop crazy as drafting Tebow in the 1st but still that is a complete and utter waste of a high pick.

  21. peyton looks like he’s making fart noises with his mouth in that picture. A reporter must have just asked him how he expects people to remember his career in the postseason.

  22. Osweiler’s dad and Elway are buddy-buddy. That’s the only reason he’s on the roster.

why the Packers? Rodgers is only 31….

  24. broncos are in desperately in need of an qb right now drafting a qb is right for them Peyton is old and can’t seem to manage to win a super bowl

  25. Whomever they draft better be ready to step in when Granny Manning falls down and can’t get up in week 8.

  26. commenter

He might have the passer rating, but of your list he has the most postseason losses!

Come postseason I’d play ANYONE but Peyton

  27. Even if Brock is “The Guy” you still need another QB when Peyton retires or gets injurred… you wouldn’t go with just Brock and Zach. Look what happened to the Cards? They need to keep Peyton on a pitch count all summer.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Pats pick another QB in a later round too.

  28. It better not be in the first three rounds. If it is, Basketball Brock was a bad pick as he has not helped the team at all and we could have used somebody that would have. In last years 7 picks, only Roby did anything so this draft had better be good!

  29. “If the Broncos use a second-day pick on a quarterback, that’s a bad sign that they’re not sold on Brock Osweiler as Manning’s successor.”

Isn’t that a GOOD sign they’re NOT sold on him???

    That’s on John and Co.

Right. The same John and Co. that turned a team DESTROYED by child McDouche and made it into a division champion immediately? You mean THAT John and Co? I know of AT least 28-30 teams that would cut off a nut to have a GM with Elways record.

Really? So I guess you never looked at their roster then huh. Oh, and how stupid is it for them to let a player learn behind a future HOFer too huh? Ever hear of Steve Young? Ever hear of Aaron Rodgers? Huh? Shoot, look up undrafted Chris Harris Jr when you have a chance. Stupidity is a symptom, not an excuse.

    ——————————————————-

the harm would have been to Tim’s pride to be left as a backup that long. For such a devoted christian, he sure carries a lot of pride. won’t be backup, won’t change position. That’s my only knock on the guy. He’s probably reasonably cool otherwise. And he’s a good enough athlete that he could change position and be very effective. Many have done so before. Too bad he won’t.

  32. They might take a late round QB, but no way in the first three rounds. Players in those rounds can have an immediate impact, and the Broncos are in win now mode more than any other team.

  33. Another weird Peyton Manning stat, he is 2-1 against Brady in AFC title games. I really don’t know what to make of that.

  34. Osweiler was Elway Jr’s best friend. That’s why he was on the roster. That said, I feel bad for the kid because Manning was a ball hogger. He never let the kid play

  35. I hear they’re in talks with the Cardinals for one of their stellar ba-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  36. A bit off topic, but that’s a great picture of Peyton. Looks like he just had a couple of slices of Papa John’s and he’s been notified by his digestive system that they have been passed a check they cannot cash.

  37. It would be a great opportunity for any kid, especially if they are wanting to get their foot in the door in doing commercials.

Nothing beats that new car smell.

  38. I’m sure Osweiler kills it on the Broncos’ charity basketball team. Other than that, I don’t really see a future for him there. Not a Broncos fan (nor a hater), but I was scratching my head big-time when they used a 2nd on him.

  39. “Manning has the 14th highest all-time career postseason QB rating”

Yeah, too bad stats don’t get you wins, huh. You are just like Peyton.
