Possible first-rounder Shane Ray cited for marijuana possession

AP

An edge-rushing prospect thought to have a good shot at being selected in Round One has encountered an unwanted off-field issue three days before the draft.

Defensive end Shane Ray, a former University of Missouri standout, was cited Monday morning on a marijuana possession charge, Corporal Scott White of the Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed to PFT on Monday night.

According to White, Ray was pulled over for speeding on Monday morning in Cooper County, Missouri. Upon the traffic stop, a highway trooper smelled what was believed to be fresh, unsmoked marijuana. The vehicle was searched, and marijuana was found, White said. Ray was cited for possession of 35 grams or less of marijuana, a misdemeanor, and released on his recognizance, White said. He was also cited for a lane violation.

Ray did not appear impaired and was cooperative, White said. He faces a June 30 court date.

As a potential late first-round pick, the pot citation is a less-than-desirable development for Ray, to say the least. Moreover, the health of Ray’s foot has also been a storyline in the lead-up to the draft, though NFL Media has reported Ray does not need surgery.

Albert Breer of NFL Media reports Ray flunked a drug test in college, citing information from five unnamed NFL teams.

Rotoworld draft expert Josh Norris has the Cardinals selecting Ray 24th overall in his latest mock draft.

  1. It’s quite apparent some of these kids think they’re above the rules. You’re about to cash in for millions.. why would you do something that could cost you money? Boneheads..

  2. I have alot of friends who could tell you what getting pulled over for a “lane violation” is code for.

They usually claim that one or two of your tires touched or crossed the yellow line. It is a charge that is virtually impossible to defend yourself against that they use to pull over anyone they want.

Pulled over on a bogus charge for possessing something that shouldn’t be illegal. Notice there was no claim by the officer that Ray was impaired.

If I were a GM thinking about drafting this kid, nothing about this report would make me think twice.

  3. Nothing to do with the Redskins. We only draft high caliber, winning, community caring talent in Washington DC. You want shameful, losing, convict promoting football, go to Dallas or New Engl*nd etc.

  4. I thought pot was legal. Can’t believe we’re still wasting tax payer’s money and using precious law enforcement for this stuff. I guess a few of us out there want even higher taxes. Enough already. I’d rather have the cops going after the bad guys, and if there aren’t any bad guys to go after, then cut the police force and give tax payers a break.

  5. @lukedunphysscienceproject coaches dont care if the players smoke weed, they care if your too stupid to get caught, and this bone head does it 3 days before the draft

  6. Dollars to donuts cops saw him and targeted him…pretty sure everyone in that city knows what Shane Rey looks like. Always looking to make the “splash arrest” nowadays..

Lane violation?? Really?? Sounds like DWB to me..IJS, if you’ve never been pulled over for this, you probably think its sour grapes…trust me, I’ve been repeatedly pulled over for this same bogus offense, just so they can get inside your car

  7. I just don’t understand the mindset of some of these draft prospects. They have the world in their hands and possibly throw millions down the drain for weed. There comes a point in time you have to mature as an adult and put the joint down.

  8. I has taken a liking to Ray after reading about how he got to where he is now but this taints it for me. If true, it sounds like a really dumb decision on his part. Costly mistake.

  9. For all those saying he cost himself $millions$…
Do you know how much money you can make slangin’ that herb? Especially subsidized with NFL checks? Sam Hurd and Nate Newton were banking large sellin’ the ganja.

Shane, learn a lesson from this…Stack it, don’t smoke it.

    Go Cowboys!

  10. He was only smoking a bit to ease the pain of his turf toe.

Now he’ll want to smoke a lot more to ease the pain of sliding out of the first round.

  11. What in the world is wrong with these kids? What could they possibly be thinking??? Don’t they know how many players would love to switch places with them? Well, now it looks like someone might….

  12. Marijuana possession should be legal. If he wasn’t impaired who cares. Alcohol fuels violence, fights, arguments. You never need a bouncer at a vapour lounge, cannabis is chill

  13. If all the players in the league got together and smoked weed at the same time they wouldn’t suspend the whole league the NFL would be forced to look the other way and yes I’m talking Peyton Manning and Tom Brady all the way down to the long snapper on the Jaguars …Legalize it

  15. For WHATEVER reason he got pulled over (seriously can we have one day without a race debate?), that didn’t magically make the weed materialize in his car. I don’t have a problem with the weed, but really, during draft week? It’s more about the decision making than the weed.

  16. I would love to see Gregory or Ray fall to the Packers pick at 30. If they re-signed Letroy Guion after his arrest than they should be willing to take a risk with one of these 2 talented edge guys. Smoke em if you got em fellas.

  17. its not 4:20 time until after you get drafted now your in the drug program most likely also costed yourself millions by being dumb. get a friend to get it for you or get a white friend to drive i know its sucks but you not gonna get pulled over lol.

  18. Def cost himself millions of dollars, but will also now likely go to a really good team at the bottom of the 1st round. Highly unlikely this guy falls out of the 1st round, even after this. Arguably the best pass rusher in the draft.

  19. Yes ..we all know the rules…lane change violation is a common
citation in order to pull someone over. Hopefully a DUI or more
will evolve. Unfortunately this is what we live in. So why drive?
Many first rounder and second rounders already have a line of credit
to allow working out for combine and other expenses. So why drive ?
As an attorney I see it all the time. The only answer I have is ” don’t
drive”. If you are driving through certain areas and you end up at
an intersection and a police cruiser ends up behind you ….80 to 90
% chance you are getting pulled over. That’s the rules. After you get
cited or arrested try impeaching that officer at a hearing ….forget it..
unless you have ESPN films ..you are Most likely done. If you just get a ticket ..if you were polite ..you can get a break . DUI or driving on a suspended license …forget it !!

  20. Strategic plan to get drafted by a playoff team in the end of the first rather than by a crappy team like the Browns or Skins.

Oops! Was that weed laying out in the front seat of my car officer? That’s spelled S-H-A-N-E R-A-Y. And make sure it hits the AP. Thank you officer.

  21. This guy was just taken off many teams board, not just because of the pot, but now because they know he is pretty stupid. Guessing his wonderlic test wasn’t very good.

  22. Well there 2 ways to look at it, without the possession hes likely to end up with a crappy team in the top 20. Now he could be drafted by a contender late in the first. He takes a hit in the money department but can make that up in his second contract if all goes well.

Of course if he falls out of the 1st round he loses money and still goes to a crappy team but I think thats unlikely. One of the 25-32 teams will take him if hes still there.

  23. I will say this, though, this kid has red flags. If I’m not mistaken, he was kicked outta the SEC Championship Game for extracurricular activities (may have been targeting via helmet-to-helmet contact). Now this.

This kid has potential oozing out of him, but he has to get it together. Now.

    ===============

Thanks for missing my point almost entirely.

This isn’t some knucklehead smoking 2 days before the combine where he knows he will get tested, which I agree would be very stupid.

This is a kid, not impaired (or he would have been charged with it), driving with his personal weed stash in his car, getting pulled over on a nonsense charge that he probably would never have gotten pulled over if he looked like me.

  25. This guy has looked like a punk from day one IMO. Another tatted up, pot smoking, tough guy.

  26. Ironically, soon enough cannabis will be a recognized therapy for pain & inflammation and will administered by team doctors but come too late for idiots who can’t wait four days to get stoned.

  27. Ugh!!! Can the NFL just get over marijuana already? Players have always smoked it and always will. It especially lends itself to the bruising sport of football. It’s ridiculous that a young guy can lose a season, a career, or even just a game because of weed.

  28. Come on fellas! He needed it for the pain in his toes!

Did you see his turf toe?

    Welcome to the Cowboys

  29. Those Missouri Tigers are sure representing well. Between Aldon Smith, DGB and now this guy….they might lead the league in suspensions in the next couple of years.

  30. the difference between O-line men and D-line men…….just ask the scarecrow on the wizard of oz what he wish he had..

  31. Him and Packers DT Guion should hang together since they have the same spirit of doing dope. Perhaps Packers should draft this guy to be with Guion so they can hang together and smoke pot.

  32. Little confused, all the dopers are complaining about a lane violation but the story says he was pulled over for speeding duuuuudes. Guess you’ve all fried to many brain cells to read. Wait, awwww man! The issue is decision making and priorities.

  33. It’s weed for Christ’s sake. He wasn’t even high driving. Just legalize it everywhere. I’m happy to live in Washington, a truly progressive state.

  35. Whats stupid is these comments..you all sound like you’re under the influence of Nancy Reagan.

  36. I love it when the commenters of PFT fancy themselves everyone’s parent/agent/police officer. “Way to lose millions!” Who are you talking to? Shane Ray neither gained nor lost any potential earnings with this news. Note the word EARNings — he will earn his millions (or not) ON the field. That’s how football players get paid.

And what’s worse — is that looking at this incident objectively, absolutely no one should care. He, like countless other Americans, is the victim of an archaic, idiotic law that harms absolutely no one.

  37. The most expensive joint you could ever dream of, hope it was worth it! Now welcome to the NFL, where you will enter in phase 2 & get tested 70 times a year like Josh Gordon. Good Luck !!!

  38. Drop to 2nd Round for marijuana? How about a 3rd or 4th Round drop for being “accused” of rape and speaking before a student body using derogatory and vile language in reference to females/female anatomy (Jameis Winston)?

  39. a few days before the draft he gets caught for speeding with pot in his car!

That is more evidence that pot is addictive. It happens too often to think it is not addictive.

Maybe you should have used your writing skills to teach Manley to read.

  41. None of the internet GM’s were there. He could have been cut a break by the po-po. Maybe he had way more “kind” in his possession. Maybe the po-po had a hard on to bust someone that was going to make millions. It is what it is. It was weed, or “dope” as my mother would call it. He didn’t have a four year old tied to the back seat did he? Or, did he? You all suck.

  42. These guys are too stupid to get out of their own way. How dumb are you to get busted 3 days before being a top 10 pick. I guess this moron doesn’t like money.

    ______

I think its more evidence that this kid isn’t a genius than anything else.

It isn’t addictive, its a matter of if you care enough to stop.

  44. getting caught with maryjane is like getting caught with a pack of cigarettes. not a big deal. at least he not beating up women.

  45. I don’t blame him for smoking, but the timing is a very poor choice. OK, so he needs some weed, call your guy and see if he can deliver it. I have been smoking for years and there is no way I would be anywhere near my car with my weed if I was preparing for the NFL draft. As someone above said, they don’t care if you smoke but they care if you get caught, pretty much the same as any job.

  46. Imagine that …. college kids getting charged with pot violations. This won’t be the last one ….

  47. Three days before the draft, every potential 1st round draft pick should be at home, wrapped in bubble wrap, with friends and family standing nearby so CRAP LIKE THIS DOESN’T HAPPEN. Don’t screw with your future!

    Thanks, Ray!

  50. “The officer smelled the scent of unburned marijuana. Yeah right.”

In that small of a quantity! Dude has the nose of a German Shepard.

  51. Doesn’t matter if marijuana is legal or not. It’s a banned substance from the NFL and you will get suspended for testing positive. The main thing teams see is a player who
can end up missing games due to personal problems, not the action itself and whether it’s illegal or not….

  52. Congratulations son. You just fell out of the 1st round. This is the same guy who got himself thrown out of his conference championship game. Bad toe or not, this kid makes terrible decisions at critical times and that’s not something coaching can fix.

    Three days before the draft?

    Hello!!!!!!!!!!

  56. what a bonehead!!! that was just a stupid thing to do, 3 days until the draft and then you get cited for possession. that just hurts your character, i doubt he falls out of the first round, but why would Washington draft him at pick 5 now?? my guess is he likely falls out of the top 10.

  57. I’m a retired detective. Over a decade in the Narcotics division.

Fresh unsmoked marijuana? I’ve never heard of such a thing, unless it was kilos. Grams? Not a chance.

If I’m the assitant district attorney, he gets a DNP. (did not prosecute).

No chance of a conviction. Zero. WE are not trained for that. DOGS are. Dogs are nearly as good as people (TV shows) think, btw.

And yes, the lane change violation is part 1 of making the charges stick. You have to write the summons for the search to stick.

He is still a rock for putting himself in this position because it is illegal and it will affect his draft stock.

  58. Sad that the Dr’s in college and the NFL would hand out Opiates like Candy and this guy is likely just choosing a healthier way to fight the pain that comes with his profession the same way a guy who works at a steel mill does with a cold one after work.

  59. Considering the risk this cat took just to get high – how can one not call him an addict?

Probably scored a minus on the Wonderlic.

  60. I see a lot of, “idiot” and “moron”, comments. What he is, is 21…or did you folks forget what that was like?

  61. At some point, we need to get beyond the stigma of weed. Seriously. Weed is far less harmful than alcohol, yet is taboo. lame.

  62. Will cost him some $$ to start with but the kid can play so what he needs to do is just take his job seriously and play. It’s working out pretty well for Justin Houston.

  63. The next Robert Mathis welcome to New England where we mentor bad boys into men. Look at our recent track record, Aqib Talib and Blount. Need I say more.

  64. I think all the prospects invited to the draft should walk in and light up joints. I’m serious about this. Screw the double standard of you can drink but you can’t smoke. At least, so far, they got it right in CO, AK and OR.

  65. Its crazy rolling the dice with what seems like the Cheech and Chong draft class. Lets face it, who didn’t dabble in their early 20’s once in a while? They are kids. Big, fast, soon to be rich, kids.

Ugh!!! Can the NFL just get over marijuana already?
    ===========================================

Well, there’s this minor little thing called the law. Currently, marijuana is against the law in 48 of the 50 states, especially the one where Ray was caught. The NFL can’t ignore the law, no matter what our opinions are of weed. Most people on this site are fairly conservative based on the views of gays, PC, Ferguson, guns, Tebow love, religion, Washington Redskins, etc. They need to start writing to their conservative congressmen to legalize weed. Will the religious right wing in this country allow weed to be legalized? They barely tolerate alcohol.

  67. People need to forget about whether pot should be legalized or not. That’s not the point here. I think it should be legalized, but the law in the state of Missouri says it’s illegal. Its 3 days before the draft. Why even put yourself in that situation? You wanna smoke then have a friend get it for you, especially if you’re known in the area and cops may look to target you. This is certainly not the way to impress a future employer.

I do have some questions about this case though. First off, how much weed did he have? Setting a felony at 35 grams or more seems high to me (no pun intended). Good weed has a strong smell, so if he had 30 grams of weed in a plastic bag, a trained cop very easily couldve smelled it. If it was only a gram or two it’s less likely. That would mean a better probability that he was targeted. Also, if he was originally pulled over for speeding, how come he wasn’t issued a speeding ticket? Curious to hear more about this incident.

None of that changes the fact that he was extremely stupid for having weed on him 3 days before the draft.

  68. Even if you think using weed is no big deal (I disagree with that, btw), the fact that a player expecting to be drafted in the 1st round getting caught with it shows how stupid he is.
He ought to be suspended for the draft this year based on that alone.

  69. Packers will draft him. Following in the footsteps of famous drug dealers Johnny Jolly and Letroy Guion. Smoke Pack Smoke!

  70. HE SAID PEOPLE CONSIDER HIM A MIRACLE, BECAUSE OF HIS STAYING OUT OF TROUBLE WHERE HE GREW UP. WOW WHAT A MIRACLE!

  71. SOME OF THESE KIDS ARE REALLY STUPID, THEY GOT TO KNOW THEIR UNDER A MICROSCOPE RIGHT NOW.

  72. There are so many footballers getting marijuana charges that at some point Commissioner Goodell should either completely ignore it or change the testing protocol to catch all of them. What they are telling the players, doesn’t seem to be detering any of them.

  73. (I wrote the following in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel this morning about Randy Gregory)

“The hypocrisy of the NFL sometimes is stunning. They will accept millions(billions) from alcohol manufacturers and openly tolerate drinking. Yet smoking some weed and you’re potentially banished for life? (The chorus from the ninnies: “But alcohol is legal”) That’s true. So it’s better to be an alcoholic than a pothead? Here’s something startling: how about not worrying about drugs that don’t enhance performance?”
Footnote: I would be more concerned about a guy’s intelligence for smoking weed so close to the “big day”. Not real smart, geniuses.

  74. It’s heartbreaking that these guys are making such bad decisions.

The NFL draft is a high stakes game.

  75. Weed is completely harmless. Literally and scientifically harmless. Those who disagree are wrong. And no, I don’t smoke it (because it’s against the law for some stupid reason). But if it were legal, I’d definitely use it socially.

    How bout dem Cowboy fans!

  77. It’s not the weed that concerns me as much as the stupidity of putting yourself in this situation just days before the draft.

  78. Any cop who would say he could smell a small bag of unburnt marijuana in a car might also plant evidence. A competent defense attorney has some pretty creative possibilities to make this cop look foolish on the stand at the hearing for his motion to suppress.

  79. Any substance you risk your career for is an addictive substance. Please give me a break on the “POT is not harmful crap”. If it’s not harmful than what substance made him risk his career earnings- POT! Pot does cloud your decision making and can be addictive (just like any other substance). Once again just because it’s less harmful compared to other substances, doesn’t make completely harmless!

  80. Bill Belicheck is a genius! Here Shane, drive around with this in your car. At some point you will get pulled over, it will be a big story and you will drop to us.

  81. Use a pill bottle to store it and never smoke it while driving…. Any little violation and…..

Only discipline them if they were driving impaired…

  83. Don’t know what else to add except to agree that he was incredibly stupid to do this 3 days before the draft.
To those who keep whining about whether or nor MJ should be legal, take it to another board – it’s not relevant here. This is about decision making and trustworthiness – not about the wonderful new things that legalizing MJ can bring to our society.
Having said that – this is also about whether or not the dude can play. If he falls to the Ravens and he is the top player on Ozzie’s board – the Ravens will take him.

    Go Oz

  84. So what… he had marijuana on him. I can think of alot worse things to worry about. Stop with the self righteous posts about him being stupid. This is not a big deal. Moving on….
