Rick Spielman: Vikings want to trade down

AP

General managers usually play things close to the vest in the days leading up to the draft, but Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman is stating publicly what he wants to do on Thursday night: Trade down.

Spielman said today that the Vikings are open for business to move down, and that teams interested in trading up to the No. 11 pick should give him a call. The Vikings have seven picks this year, and Spielman would like to increase that number.

“I’m looking forward to potentially moving out of that pick, if at all possible. I don’t anticipate us moving up at this point, but I would love the opportunity to move down and collect more picks. My goal is always to have 10 picks and one of the reasons for that is you get the opportunity to move up and down throughout that draft,” Spielman said.

Having said that, Spielman said the Vikings have a few players they love enough that they’d be willing to stay put and pick at No. 11.

“We may just stick at 11 this year if there’s a player that falls to us who’s just too good, we’re not going to pass and just going to take him,” Spielman said.

Basically, Spielman wants any team that has an interest in trading up to No. 11 to call him. There’s a good chance that the Vikings will say yes to a trade that yields them more picks.

  1. Wanting 10 picks does not mean he will leave the 1st,

6 more rounds to trade down

  2. “We may just stick at 11 this year if there’s a player that falls to us who’s just too good, we’re not going to pass and just going to take him,” Spielman said.

    ————————————-

Does that mean potential trade partners will have to wait until after pick #10 to see if they have a deal?

  3. That tells you they don’t see much difference between
Tre Waynes at CB and other CBs who will be there 10-12 picks later. Fully agree with that. However, if any of the top 3 WRs make it to 11 they should run the podeum and not look back.

  4. Bill Belichick on the line Rick… I’ll give you my 1st, 2nd, and one of my 4th’s for #11. Deal.

The Pats have 9 picks and there are not close to 9 open roster spots on the Super Bowl Champions. They’ll spend some capital to move up and get the premier conerback in the draft.

  5. ‘spose this is a better method for moving down than simply passing on their picks…so they got that going for them at least…

  6. Wanting 10 picks does not mean he will leave the 1st,

6 more rounds to trade down

Spielman talking about the 11th pick:

“I’m looking forward to potentially moving out of that pick, if at all possible. I don’t anticipate us moving up at this point, but I would love the opportunity to move down and collect more picks.

  7. Best Draft Day GM in the NFL.

    Hands down.

He’s acquired top tier young talent the past three drafts that are building blocks for our team the next decade.

He gets what he wants…when he wants.

Our Super Bowl Roster is almost built.

    Embrace Greatness.

    Embrace Rick “The Magician” Spielman.

  8. Translation: We’re not going to win anything anyways so why ruin another young man’s dreams? We’ll just draft guys who will help keep us out of the playoffs for years to come. No need to add to our NFL record 27 playoff losses!!

    Business as usual.

  9. When you have a hole at every position, you clearly need the most picks possible.

The Vikings need to hit on every pick and have them start right away just to not finish last in the NFC north.

    >

  10. I think several teams are going to try to trade down this year. Not a great draft class

  11. I’m not sure there will be tons of teams clamoring to trade into the 11th spot, but whatever. As long as he doesn’t draft first round busts like Datone Jones, Nick Perry, Derrick Sherrod, Justin Harrel or Ahmad Carrol, the Vikes should be just fine.

  12. Of course he wants to trade down. He’s tired of picking 1st round busts year after year. Having a 2nd-7th round bust on his already Matt-Millenesque resume won’t look nearly as bad!

  13. To the packer trolls

There is nothing wrong with trading down. That means you are continuing to build your team through the draft and continue to be stronger every year.

  14. At the very least, you know Spielman is going to convince the Browns that they need our pick if they’re going to get the guy they want. This will be the third year out of four that the Vikings fleece the Browns to move down one pick.

  15. Spielman’s strength is the 1st round where odds are 50-50 on hitting. Vikings have one 2nd rounder in the roster and Rudolph hasn’t played a full season yet. Vikes have several 3rd round picks, but only one is playing consistently.

No Rick, stay put and take at least one shot at 50-50.

  16. 1. Another Packer Bust in the first round!!!!!!
Let’s take a look at their brilliance over the years. In Turd Thompson you cheese trolls still trust??? You yellow headed bug eyed trolls!!!!!!!

  17. What an idiot. Has this guy so alienated his fellow GMs around the league that he has to announce his intentions? Does he not talk to his peers? Isn’t his door always open, like every other GM’s?

It’s like the wife who constantly tells her husband to call to let her know when he’ll be home from work even though he’s gotten home at 6PM every day for the last 20 years.

  18. “There is nothing wrong with trading down. That means you are continuing to build your team through the draft and continue to be stronger every year.”

    —-
No kidding. The Packers do this all the time. But when they trade down they end up with players like Jordy Nelson NOT busts like Corduroy Patterson.

  19. I have been thinking this all along, that the Vikings will not pick at #11. In fact, with the Browns right behind them, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them swap picks again.

But honestly, if Williams, Cooper, and White are gone (and they will be), the Vikings are better off trading down and accumulating extra picks.

  20. Remember when the Vikings used to “trade down” for free by letting their time elapse??? That was awesome!

  21. Best GM in the land – crafty with his picks and trades.

Best Draft Day GM in the NFL.

As proven by the slot where he’s drafting, Can’t argue with that.

  22. That tells you they don’t see much difference between
Tre Waynes at CB and other CBs who will be there 10-12 picks later. Fully agree with that. However, if any of the top 3 WRs make it to 11 they should run the podeum and not look back.

    ——–————————

Yes because wr is definately our biggest need. And we know for a fact all three of those wrs will turn into the next randy moss. And wr is what makes a team good, just ask seattle and new england *sarcasm*

  23. Feel bad for Vikes’ fans. It’s gonna sting when the Vikes trade back and as part of the trade back, they get rid of Peterson in the process. Anyone with a half a brain can see right through their bullsmoke.

  24. Slick Rick is the draft guru.

Dude accumulates more picks per draft than any GM around.

The Bridgewater move up to the 32nd pick overall to slide in front of Houston last year was pure genius, and pure Slick Rick.

Add Anthony Barr-a complete STUD LB to the Bridgewater pick last year, Harrison Smith from a few years ago, a hungry PETERSON, and a revamped defense-made in Zimmer’s image-this team is ready for a major leap to a playoff berth.

    Go get ’em Slick!!!!!!!

  25. Yes, they should trade down and let a competent team use that pick instead. Let the Vikings screw up late picks instead.
Don’t worry Vikings fans, you will be able to trade out of the top ten next year!

  26. He is the master.

Rick bides his time, while the Packers decide which drug dealer to draft…..

Hey Pack….Shane Rey is available now!!!

He fits the “all drug dealer” NFL team…your Green Bush Packers!!!

    BAHAHAHA!

  27. Just maybe the Vikes have a player they like at 11 but want everybody else to think there are no players worthy of an 11 pick. just food for thought

  28. This is all a smoke screen. Vikes are going to give up there 11th and Adrian to Oakland for the 4th and second round pick. Then they will draft Donte Fowler or Lenard Williams and get two more decent players in the second.

SPIELMAN WANTS TO TRADE DOWN SO HE CAN GET 4 EXTRA PICKS TO WASTE ON ANOTHER BUST WR LIKE CORDUROY PATTERSON, PERCY HARVIN & TROY WILLIAMSON
    ______

If Patterson is a bust, Jordy Nelson is a bust, because Patterson has been better than Nelson was in his first two years.

Percy Harvin was Rookie of the Year in 2009 and an MVP candidate until getting hurt in 2012. He was traded for first and third round picks and only then fell off the face of the earth.

    Spielman didn’t draft Williamson.

  30. vikings should call Chip Kelly and see if he wants the number 11 pick for the 20th pick and Evan Mathis. this would shore up the middle of the vikings o-line and then at pick 20 they could still get a guy like Marcus Peters or Eric Kendricks, or even Bernardrick McKinney.

  31. Yeah when you have, all sorts of holes that need filling, like getting quality WRs a bit of tidying up at the DT and OT. Maybe a TE that can stay healthy for 16 games.

Not to mention the big cloud following their RB around, they could trade down.

If the Vikings were smart they would take the best available player whether its WR , OT, DB, or LB. Hopefully for Viking fans Rick can hit on them so then maybe one day the Vikings fans can quit being so Salty.

  32. Rick Spielman on trading down: “We are more than willing to trade away our 11th pick for a later pick, and any former Packer players.”

  33. Yikes, another Vikings or Packers article degenerated into a troll fest. Like high school in here. Ariani, how much time did that bust list take you to research and type up? And what does it prove? Wins are all that matter. You can have all the talent in the world but at the end of the day if your team has 12 wins in 2 seasons it doesn’t matter. You can’t win the SB in April.

  34. The stupidity and immaturity of packers trolls just makes me laugh and smile.

Do you guys get an email every time an article about the Vikings pops up or something?

It’s amazing to me how you pop over to PHT and there is actual intellectual and respectful discussion going on between fans (ie: StL vs MN) during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Then you pop back over to PFT and it’s “Aduh! Da Packers are better all yer team! DUH!”

There must be something in the drinking water in WI that causes stupidity and delusion.

  35. I don’t know what this article has to do with the Green Bay Packers, but if you want to keep taking shots at them, maybe you should have some ammunition first.
    The last decade:
GB: 82-61-1 (5 division titles, 7 playoff appearances & 1 Super Bowl victory)
    MN:71-83 (2 Division titles, 4 playoff appearances & 0 Super bowl victories.
I wouldn’t be talking about an other teams draft picks or their GM.
V fans just got it handed to them…

  36. He’ll trade down 1 with Cleveland and draft Waynes anyway. Then with the extra picks he’ll move back into the 1st (maybe Saints #29) and pick Gordon or the best available OT.

Jordy Nelson wasn’t a starter his first 2 years.

He was stuck behind Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and James Jones, along with JerMichael Finley.

Now, Patterson has been given every opportunity to jump start the Vikings banal receiving game and has failed at every turn.
He was drafted to start and play right away.
So far he has only provided special teams support.

Also, just because these 2 players had similar stats early in their careers, you can’t just assume that Patterson is going to blossom like Nelson has.

By your reasoning Teddy Bridgewater is going to be no more successful than Christian Ponder.

That’s extremely faulty thinking, but then again, what’s new when you’re trying to talk football with a Viking troll.

  44. They never choked like queen bay did in the NFC championship game . Snatching a loss from the jaws of victory

    ———————————–

Actually they did, you might recall a certain qb throwing an interception in the closing seconds, resulting in an overtime loss in the NFC championship. Or you might recall a certain kicker that never misses, who missed a game winning field goal, ultimately resulting in a loss in the NFC championship.

They also choke in entirely different ways sometimes too. Like losing 41-0 in an NFC championship game.

  45. Yup. Another vikings story gone troll childish crazy, but, it’s the week of the draft, what’dya expect?

Hey packer fans! Eat my shorts!
Yeah, that’s right. I said it, what?

  46. He should have signed with the Jets. Then NFL wouldn’t have even bothered asking the prosecution for the paperwork.

Its obvious the League punishes certain teams(Redskins, Cowboys, Patriots) and goes easy on teams like the Jets.

  47. Looking at statistics and facts, I just don’t understand teams philosophy of trading down for more picks. The further down you drop, the less chance of getting a starter and less chance of them playing long for the team. A good draft is 2 starters, 3 is great. After round one, the years that a player will play on average drops from 6 to 2. You have just as much chance for an undrafted free agent being a player as a 5th, 6th or 7th rd draft pick. If I were a GM, I would try to trade my 3rd for a young established player, like the Dolphins did with Stills and use the rest of my picks to move up in the first and second. Getting 3 quality starters is a lot better then 10 mediocre picks who may or may not play in their career.

You’re the one saying Patterson is destined to be a bust. I’m just saying that a lot of wide receivers take a few years to blossom. I think you’re making my point by pointing out how bad Nelson sucked his first three years.

Patterson was not drafted to be a Day 1 starter. Everyone on earth said that he was raw and would take time to develop. Now we’re supposed to give up on him because he wasn’t good in his second year?

  49. “I think you’re making my point by pointing out how bad Nelson sucked his first three years.”
    ———————-

What? He didn’t suck, he was simply stuck behind 3 proven veteran WRs. In his 3rd season when Driver got injured in the Super Bowl, Nelson took over, catching 9 balls for 140 yards and a TD.

As the Super Bowl proved, all Nelson needed was a chance. Patterson on the other hand has already had plenty of chances and he’s failed to come through.

  50. Queens, trade down to when the Green Bay Packers, Kings of the North cut players and just sign them all….done deal aka Rick Spurgman.

THe Vikings have NEVER won an official championship to be recognized by the NFL so don’t believe their foolish fans that try to claim they do. Go away purple fairy team the CFL awaits!

  53. If you need a backup quarterback….
Give Vince Young a chance.. He wouldn’t cost a lot and He can still play at a HIGH level…. His career won/loss record is 31-19… He’s a 2 time Pro-Bowler with playoff experience and was voted 2006 NFL Rookie of the Year….. The NFL is all about “WINS and LOSSES”…. and this guy WINS…. There is a big difference between Perception and Reality.
If you need a good backup QB… Bring in Vince Young and judge him as such.. A backup quarterback…

  54. I don’t understand Speilman’s motivation for announcing this, it just seems dumb. Do you think for one minute that the other 31 teams are lacking Speilman’s phone #? Do you think that if they wanted to move up to #11, they would have a pretty accurate idea of what it would take to get there and have already done the calculation in their heads vs the prospective player they would take?

So what’s the reason other to to hear yourself talk? I am beginning to think Speilman is as dumb as he sounds which would make him the ideal GM for the Viking fans, none of them have been to any Mensa meetings either.

I would agree with that. I would also think that by the end of this year though, he would need to show some great improvement to not be considered a bust.

The QB carousel doesn’t help either. You cannot compare the two on that regard. all you have to do is look at Jennings numbers when he left GB and you can see the QB situation needs to settle before you can figure out if Patterson is a bust.

This year will be very interesting for the Minny offense. If peterson plays, and Bridgewater improves, they will be competitive. If they struggle, you guys might be gutting your WR and RB’s by next year.
