Could Eagles be trying to get to No. 1?

Here’s an intriguing rumor that has emerged with the draft less than three hours away.

As much of the trade chatter focuses on the Eagles trying to swing a deal with the Titans for the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, the Eagles also could be trying to go all the way to No. 1.

If the Titans are driving too hard of a bargain for the chance to get Marcus Mariota after the Buccaneers take Jameis Winston, the ideal Plan B could be to get Tampa to ditch its Plan A, offering a haul of players and picks in exchange for a 19-spot climb.

It’s unclear what the Eagles would offer, or what the Bucs would want.  The Buccaneers could take quarterback Sam Bradford as part of the process, exchanging the many off-field questions surrounding Winston with a significant on-field question regarding Bradford’s twice-torn ACL.

For Tampa Bay, a chance to back out of the top spot could be enticing, especially if the offer gives them multiple pieces that would allow coach Lovie Smith and G.M. Jason Licht to more quickly build an entire team that fits their vision for the franchise’s offense and defense.  It also gives the powers-that-be a way to avoid rolling the dice on Winston, especially if the Eagles make an offer than legitimately can be characterized as something the Bucs couldn’t refuse.

At a time when the Buccaneers want an extra first-round pick, this could be the way to make that happen — in 2015, 2016, and perhaps beyond.

Maybe the Eagles will spark talks with Tampa in an effort to persuade the Titans to be more reasonable in their demands.  Regardless, the biggest question mark entering the first night of the draft potential will become a bit more interesting.

  2. The Bucs would be fools not to take their offer. This is Herschel Walker part two

  3. Zero chance this happens. This was not even worth reporting. Just makes the reporters look like idiots for even thinking this would be entertained.

  4. Why do I have a feeling the Eagles won’t make any deals. I’ll be glad when the draft starts. Even I’m tired of this stuff.

  5. “Could Eagles be trying to get to No. 1?”

COULD Joe Namath be making a comeback?

COULD Jack Ham being coming out of retirement?

COULD Barack Hussein Obama be a Muslim?? Stay tuned as the crack staff at PFT will get us all the answers.

  6. A source with knowledge of the situation has informed me that a reporter heard team executives say that a unconfirmed scout said the eagles are trying to land picks 2-32 so they can package them in a trade offers for Aaron Rodgers, Miguel Cabrea, Sidney Crosby, and LeBron James so they can then send them and Sam Bradford to Tampa for the 1st pick in the draft…

  7. If Tampa trades out, I mean how much of a waste of money and time would that be. What on earth could possibly make it worthwhile with so many jobs on the line? It would be a bigger waste than the Browns last year with their Teddy Bridgewater is awesome but hey let’s take a coke head drunk.

That being said, I would find it absolutely hilarious to see the Eagles gutted for years to come just so ole Chip can get a Duck. What is Chip going to do when he runs out of Ducks he’s familiar with? Will he retire or just jump off a bridge?

  8. The lolskins won’t win 13 games over the next five years.

Ironically enough, the RGIII trade is the ultimate warning against doing this kind of deal. RG3-13 is a bust, and there’s a good chance that Mariota or Winston (or both) will be too.

  9. All I know is after 20+ years of following the Bucs, if they draft Winston, the Bucs are dead to this family!

Will never win a division with the 4th ranked QB in the division…

  10. No amount of picks are worth the value of a franchise Qb. The bucs and Titans know this and are staying put.

  11. Eagles sure do get a lot of ink for a 10-6 one and done team. The draft cracks me up. It’s the biggest day of the year for Browns, Eagles, Rams and Falcons fans.

Every years its the same old unfulfilled promises

  12. Which source do you have for stating this rumor?

Odds are large this would happen, unless you can share evidence.

Simply makes no sense for Kelly to ruin his team for either Winston or Mariota, neither of which is on par with P. Manning or Luck when they were entering the draft.

I’d almost bet my house mortgage this trade won’t happen.

  13. Honest to God, if you were an alien who just landed on this planet last week and had only this website to learn about the NFL (wow- this hypothetical is careening off the rails), you would think that the Eagles, Browns, and Titans were the only 3 teams in the league.

I hope Kelly does nothing if only to make all these talking heads look stupid (or more stupid in the case of some of them).
    .———

He is doing nothing but making himself look like a fool. And if he mortgages the team’s future (of which he won’t be a part of in 2-3 years) to take Mariota, he will be the laughingstock of the league.

  15. Never addressed in these posts are the fact Bradford has said he won’t sign an extension anywhere but Philadelphia. Isn’t that a problem in trading him?

  16. So something like: #20, next year’s #1, Bradford, Cox, Mathis, Kendricks and Boykin (or lower round picks instead of players)?

If they can handle the cap numbers, that’s a pretty nice team stacking up for Tampa.

  17. The last time I remember when there was such fuss about drafting a QB that was the ‘perfect’ scheme fit that it would be a match made in Heaven…

Andre Ware to the Detroit Lions.

How did that turn out for all involved?

  18. The eagles could trade for Aaron Rodgers with their first, second, third, and fourth round pick and the media will still say Chips going after Mariota.

  19. Tampa and Tennessee are racist just for talking to the Eagles!!!

    Regards,
    Screamin’ A Smith

  20. I can confirm the Eagles have offered me Sam Bradford and their #1 pick for the extra computer monitor I have in my cube and the rest of my bottle of Diet Mt. Dew… I love reading the ridiculous things that get posted right before the draft.

  21. ource with knowledge of the situation has informed me that a reporter heard team executives say that a unconfirmed scout said the eagles are trying to land picks 2-32 so they can package them in a trade offers for Aaron Rodgers, Miguel Cabrea, Sidney Crosby, and LeBron James so they can then send them and Sam Bradford to Tampa for the 1st pick in the draft…

  22. I have an outstanding source who knows exactly who each team is picking in the first round…I’ll post them tomorrow morning since I don’t have the time right now.

  23. More and more I’m getting the impression that Chip Kelly doesn’t know what he’s doing.

I was hoping they traded the house to get too number 2, and have Tampa take mariota and totally screw them…

In all the talk floating around today I must say this is the best comment I have read. Well played Sir.

  25. There is absolutely nothing logical about what

    logicalvoice says:

You claimed earlier today the Eagles are always at the bottom of the Division.

I think in the last 15 years or so they have been the bottom of the division what 3 times maybe?

They won the division 7 times

    4 NFC Championship Games

    1 Superbowl

I guess you have to smoke a little crack in DC with the mayor to think that’s logical.

  26. If the Eagles got to #2 the Bucs could take Mariota at #1. The Eagles would take Winston #2 and have to work out another big deal to get Mariota. The would have very little draft picks left this year and next. But Chip is confident that he can find talent outside of the draft.

Tonight will be interesting to say the least.

  27. When Chip Kelley called the Tampa Front Office, they spit out their coffee when he mentioned the benefits of having Sam Bradford as your play caller.

  28. Chip Kelly and his gimmick game aren’t gonna make it in the NFL. Might as well go out in a bustling ball of flames and get your “savior ” while you can ol’ Chippster

  29. Jaggedmark- Bradford won’t sign? Lol. Folks are knocking his door down to sign his 2 busted knees? This is what is called “leverage”. There’s actually a team, the Browns, that want him and will offer him a truckload of money. Now, they’ll just have to more, that’s all

  30. It’s about goddamn time. The Bucs would be absolutely ridiculous to not consider trading out of this pick, knowing how desperate Chip is to get it.

Jamarcus Winston isn’t worth the trade you could pull off for his spot.

  31. Hmm. If Bradford wouldn’t take well to being a Brown, I wonder how he’ll feel about being a Buccaneer. Warm weather. No real QB competition down there.

Aw, who am I kidding. Sam will tear his ACL again before he has a chance to compete against Glennon. This time in training camp.

  32. Or maybe the Eagles aren’t really all that interested in staking their future on one guy and Chip Kelly is trying to hype his guy Mariotta to make sure Mariotta is picked at #2.

  33. jaggedmark says:

    —-

He might have said that, but the truth is that he will sign with whoever offers him an extension. With his injury history, he isn’t getting a new deal unless he plays most of the season at a high level anyway. And if he lights up the league this year, he can be franchise-tagged twice. He has no leverage, and would be happy to take an extension, even if he stinks and can’t get better than a back-up job.

he could retire, but what else is he going to do that pays NFL money?

  34. Kelly is going to go down ugly with these off-season moves.

Now he’s either one-upping Washington’s RGIII deal and wiping out the Eagles first round picks for the rest of the decade, or he’s stuck with bunch of parts that won’t work in the Kelly machine.

    Either way, it’s ugly.

  35. I think the funniest thing I could possibly hear tonight would be ” With the first pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select ,
From the University of Oregon, Marcus Mariota “. What would the talking heads do ? Have to actually stop speculating and discuss football…? I’m an Eagles fan, and I’m sick to death of this. Mariota would be nice, so would a cure for cancer, world peace, and free pizza, I think the last three items have more probability of occurring.

    ——————————————–
On the bright side, most hypotheticals careen widely off the rails (see the recent Supreme Court questions about capital punishment), but very few are honest enough to make such an assessment even while engaging them.

    I commend you, sir.

  37. If I know Lovie Smith he’s drooling over the chance to install a journeyman quarterback that will hinder his otherwise talented team into obscurity until he’s eventually fired.

  38. The RG3 deal has become the standard by which foolish major trades are judged. Just listen to any radio station. In fact, it should be used as a scale – an RG1 level trade is merely bad, an RG2 trade is worthless a year later, and the full-blown disaster with multi-year consequences is an “RG3”.

  39. But, Chip said during his press conference the day he traded for and anointed Bradford his starter that he had zero intentions of going for Mariotta. LOL! Anyone with half a brain knew he was lying every time he opened his yap.

  40. So Chip is calling Tampa to see if they’ll take less for the #1 spot than what Tennessee is asking for the #2 spot?

Would love to hear that call.

  41. I agree with super creepy rob Lowe. There is no stud, clear cut HOF QB in this draft. The bucs could pants the Eagles and solidify their team for years to come

  42. im not an “expert” but if after watching the FSU Oregon game last year id be happy to trade away one of the first two picks in the draft for a big haul of picks. Neither guy strikes me as a “franchise” quarterback.

  43. Bradford, Fletcher Cox and Kendricks along with the #20 pick has to make Lovie Smith think long and hard about it. He could add three big pieces to his defense and still have a QB better than Tampa has seen in years, and no crab leg controversy.

  44. Honestly they should move if they’re planning on taking Winston. I seriously doubt any other team wants him. They could get him much later in rd 1.

  45. Seriously…here’s what it will take:

Cleve gets Bradford, Kendricks, Phi’s 2016 2nd and gives up #12

Eagles trade 12, 20, 2016 1st, Cox, Tebow, that guy rated the top beer vendor at the Linc and 3 toothless trailer chicks clinging to their Shady jerseys for Tenn’s no. 2

    That should do it

  46. The last time I remember when there was such fuss about drafting a QB that was the ‘perfect’ scheme fit that it would be a match made in Heaven…

Andre Ware to the Detroit Lions.

    I was burying that mess.
You just put me back in therapy.

  47. It comes down to value. Chip Kelly thinks Mariota is a top tier QB in his system. He recruited the kid and molded the kid into what he is now. IN THAT SYSTEM.

Is Mariota a top tier QB in Tennessee or Cleveland or San Diego? Probably not. And he might not be the guy in Philadelphia either, but Chip thinks he is.

And if you were putting together a team AND YOU THOUGHT in your gut that the kid would be a top tier QB in the league for the next 10 years, you’d trade a lot to get him.

So, if the Eagles move up to get this kid, I commend Kelly for his confidence in himself and his evaluation of talent. Even if he’s dead wrong.

But as an Eagles fan, I think they’re going to give too much for the risk that Chip will be back in college in 3 years.

  48. It’s cute how tuck rule is obsessed with the Eagles, and tries his usual lame attempt at humor…

  49. No one should be shocked if mariota goes one to tb. Chip is setting the eagles back a decade. Hysterical.

  50. If the Bucs trade that pick 2 the Eagles for sorry ass Sam Bradford and draft picks, they will LOSE Tampa Bay fans FOREVER!!!

  51. restorativejusticeprogram says:

I hope Kelly does nothing if only to make all these talking heads look stupid (or more stupid in the case of some of them).

    —-

I can totally see him sending out all these rumours and then trading out of his 1st rounder. But down for extra picks in the 2nd and 4th or something. Just to freak out the NFL media.

Because, you know, they aren’t freaked out enough as it is with the draft, lol.

  52. Big mistake if Tampa gets Bradford. Even with multiple pieces it most times don’t matter if you don’t have a franchise QB. Bradford’s health issues are a major concern. Maybe one or two teams can win a championship without a franchise QB. Last I can remember is the Ravens SB run in 2000–DEFENSE WON THE DAY.

  53. 1) Mariota is not that good.
    2) Without additional players (remember football is a team sport?), Eagles are not going anywhere.
    3) Gimmick based offense rarely work over an entire length of season.
    4) At the end of 2015 season, the Eagles will be still Super Bowl less.

    Love,

    NFC East fan

  54. Will Mariota refuse to go to the team that drafts him and insist on playing for the team he wants to play for, or will he do the classy and mature thing?

  55. @70velvet – what do you expect? I hate the Eagles but they sure fill the empty time from the Super Bowl to week 1.

    every year

  56. We are getting all hot and bothered about a franchise that has never won a Super Bowl and last won a championship in 1960.

  57. “With the first pick of the 2015 NFL draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Jameis Winston, quarterback, Florida State.

“With the second pick of the 2015 NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans select Marcus Mariota, quarterback, Oregon.”

And on and on and on. The night ends with exactly zero “blockbusters.”

  58. Mr. Wright212 glad to see you back on an Eagle post, still obsessed with the team that owns your Giants. Doesn’t stop you from being the single dumbest poster on the site.

  59. I’m with the people hoping the Eagles stay put. Cox and Kendricks are firsts. Bradford is a first. #20 makes 4 first round picks, plus the 2nd next year for Bradford. Waaaay too much to spend.

Plus, shutting analysts up is priceless.

  60. I just got a call from Tennessee. In addition to what I said they’ll take, they also want Philly to throw in one of those absurdly cheesy rah-rah video messages from Bradley Cooper. Done and done.

  61. I think the Eagles should trade their 1st rd pick to MN for AP and MN’s 3rd. Then trade AP, Bradford and next years 1st to Tampa for the number 1 pick.

Redskins have a better record than the Cowboys in 2015?

Wanna put your money where your mouth is?

  63. Mariota to the Titans, Rams, Browns will be the end of his career before it even starts. Dear Marcus, just have your agent tell the Titans, Rams and Browns that you are simply not interested in playing for either of their teams.

  64. I just got a call from General Custer… Aka Tom Couglin..he says he’s stealing money and will be at the Manning QB camp after another 6-10 season, but only as a guest…

  65. With the 12th pick, the cleveland browns trade all their picks for 3 3rd round picks in 2016 and 4 4th round picks in 2017.

Just a matter of HOW the Browns screw up tonight, not even a matter of IF

  66. If those idiots give up the #1 or #2 pick for the Eagles #20 pick and a boatload of bodies, they are nuts. It would HELP the Eagles CLEAR THEIR future Cap numbers and burden either whichever team with an unmanageable Cap numbers for the current year.
