Cris Carter suggests an Adrian Peterson trade is coming

Reuters

The Vikings continue to insist that Adrian Peterson will not be traded. Not everyone believes them.

Cris Carter, the Hall of Fame former Vikings receiver who now works as an ESPN commentator, suggested today on Mike & Mike that he has been given inside information about a Peterson trade.

“I’m under gag order on the Adrian Peterson situation, but I believe something’s gonna happen,” Carter said. “But I can’t talk about it.”

It’s a bit odd that Carter would choose to talk about something that he “can’t talk about” because he’s “under gag order,” but that’s what Carter said, and Carter presumably still has some relationships with people in Minnesota. Which suggests that it’s possible Carter knows that privately, the Vikings are more open to trading Peterson than they’re indicating publicly.

Still, this sounds like a long shot. The Vikings reportedly want a huge bounty if they’re going to part with Peterson, and there have been no reports of another team stepping to the plate with that kind of deal. Carter is in a minority in thinking anything is going to happen other than Peterson staying in Minnesota.

  1. Chris Carter also has a bone to pick with the Vikings and has in the past spent time bad mouthing this organization. What better way to get back at them then by making up things the day before the NFL draft starts. What a joke.

  2. Cris Carter is a loud mouth dirtbag. He was in Minnesota and still is now. Just another example of a WR who was ruined by the Vikings, which includes Randy Moss, Troy Williamson, Corduroy Patterson and Percy Harvin. Granted Carter had success, but they ruined him as a person off the field.

  3. Send Peterson to Dallas…

Patriots vs. Dallas in Super Bowl L. It will be the most loved and most hated Super Bowl ever at the same time.

  4. “I know something you don’t know, nany nany boo boo.”

    – Cris Carter

How old is this guy? Thanks for the brilliant insight, Cris.

  5. I used to like when Carter played, but as an analyst, he’s horrible. He’s so uneducated it’s ridiculous, and his hate for white people is absurd, while he sticks up for black criminals. Unfortunately, I’ve listened to him on Mike and Mike, who are just equally as bad, and he makes me change the station when talks. He’s terrible.

  6. If the Vikings are open to trading AP, they’d better be willing to settle for a 3rd rounder. No way does any other NFL team give them a pick higher than that.

  7. As a close friend of the organization I have heard whispers surrounding AP being traded for a group of vets and a few non-first round picks.

Earliest pick they can yield will be a late 2nd rounder.

If cap numbers can be adjusted I hear NE might make a play.

  8. The Dallas Cowboys trade their first and third rounds picks to Minnesota for Adrian Peterson after Todd Gurley and Melvin Gordon get picked before.

We draft Devante Parker with our #11 pick, Marcus Peters with the Cowboy’s first round pick acquired from the trade, and Eric Kendrick’s in the second.

We officially have the best roster in the entire NFL and have the best young team in the NFL by FAR.

Rick Spielman is the best GM in the NFL.

And the Vikings are the best franchise.

    Embrace Greatness.

  9. I don’t know why any team would trade for this guy. This is the strongest draft class for RBs we’ve seen in awhile.

  10. Lets not forget that Carter is close to Larry Fitzgerald where Peterson is rumored to possibly go.
Vikes trade Peterson tonight for a player/a 2nd this year/conditional 1st next year. Cards of Cowboys will bite!

  11. Lol-thats a great photo of “cmon man.” Kudos to you, Michael David Smith. Im laughing out loud here in my office.

  12. Trying to imagine a scenario in which Carter didn’t violate his gag order… I can’t think of one. Unless there is no gag order, and there is no movement on a Peterson trade.

He’ll either play for the Vikings or the Cowboys. And the Cowboys really can’t do a deal that would make the Vikes happy. So, AP will suit up in purple and gold and will turn in a very mediocre season. If the Cowboys somehow pull of a trade, then even I would pick the Cowboys to make it to (at least) the divisional round of the playoffs.

  13. The Vikings choose Gurley then trade AP to the Chargers for the 17th pick and a conditional 3rd Round pick. The Vikings then use that to grab CB Kevin Johnson out of Wake Forest.

  14. There’s been a trade lined up to Dallas for a month. Both teams denying it to keep teams from knowing the vikings hold there first rounder until they are on the clock

  15. SKOL-LOL

Actually, I believe Carter cleaned up his act in MN. I was super young so I don’t remember any of it, but I’m pretty sure he was big into drugs and then turned his life around big time.

  16. Conversation not complete… was he ask his thoughts on AP situation, etc. Just more Draft Day fodder, and besides ANTHING is possible on this day of days!

  17. He’s going to the Cards for Michael Floyd & Cards’ 2nd round pick. Will be announced tonight or tomorrow. MARK IT!

  18. So the GM who never says anything of substance to the media is going to tell one of the biggest mouths the NFL has EVER seen that AP is going to be traded….RIGHT

  19. I wish it were true, but Paul Allen guaranteed that Peterson would not be traded and he has a lot more inside sources with the Vikings than Cris Carter does. Could Carter have thrown that out there to encourage people to continue watching the draft until the end of the first round, which ESPN coincidentally is televising?

  20. another former player turned ESPN commentator claiming he has the scoop…… yea, right.

Whats ole Mort have to add that’s just as meaningless?

  21. Carter has an “in” with Larry Fitz jr… Would not surprise me if the Cardinals are making a play…

Knock-Knock to Dallas and Jerry Jones:– If you want Adrian, it’s time to blow the Vikings away with a great deal…

    #reverschel

  22. AP and #11 this year to philly for Demarco, #20, 2nd round pick this year, and 1st or 2nd next year.

Philly can then keep AP and use #11 pick as trade value to move up to #2 or package them, or just trade AP and another player straight up for #2. Or some other combination of players and picks since both the Vikes and Eagles want to move out of their current slots.

  23. is there a deadline when all this talk is finally over? I mean if he doesn’t get traded during the draft do we then have to listen to endless stories about how he will be traded during training camp? And if this doesn’t happen do we hear it will happen at midseason etc. etc.

I am afraid we will never hear the end of this. It is the news medias version of perpetual motion….perpetual commotion.

  24. “Whoever” trades for AP and mortgages future picks. AP blows out ACL during first regular season game. Instant Karma’s gonna get you…….

  25. Lol. Nobody inside the Vikings organization would tell Carter anything.

Peterson probably has his hopes up that the Vikings are going to trade him as the draft approaches and likely echoed that sentiment to Carter.

    Nothing but wishful thinking.

  26. I know is a great player, and he probably has at least a year or two left in him.

What I don’t understand is that the Vikings don’t see the value of the cap relief that trading him would bring – you get rid of his $13 million salary – that’s a huge bonus.

If I were them I’d consider a more modest trade proposal, like a 2nd round pick for the next three years. Something like that. Not ridiculous, but three usefull picks where you’re almost guaranteed to be adding some value to your team.

  27. I’m going to miss Adrian Peterson in purple – just as much as I’ll miss Jay Cutler in Chicago.

They both lose nearly every game to the Packers. He’s the epitome of MN incompetence.

  28. I don’t doubt for a second that the Vikings want to trade Peterson, desperately! What they will get in return is the open question. Nobody but Speilman thinks Peterson is worth $12 mil so they will have to ask permission and receive it to get Peterson to sign for a lower number. Then they can work out a trade package. My prediction, nothing higher than a 4 rounder. And Speilman would take that deal and love it.

  29. I’d say the odds that Carter is making this whole thing up are well north of 50%. Who would waste their time telling this clown anything?

  30. Is an almost straight-up trade of Larry Fitzgerald for AP too unrealistic to think about? I know Fitz just re-did his contract and everything… But, it gives the Vikes a new face to the franchise after AP tarnished it, and Fitzgerald gets to “go home” to where he started as a ball boy. Cards get their star running back in a draft where WR is so deep, they could potentially find his replacement or two in rounds 1-3.

  31. Trade him to the Browns for their 2 first rounders! Done! It will be a plus for both teams as vikings won’t face him since he is in the AFC and until Vikings play Browns some time in future!

  32. Such a toolbox. Now if something does happen he gets to pound his chest and say that’s what he had insider scoop on. If nothing happens he gets to say the deal fell through, and he still can’t divulge what it was. Such a shameless attempt to paint him self as an insider when he isn’t anymore.

  33. Why do tv personalities have make themselves the story?

Why would Chris Carter know about a Peterson trade, but nobody else does? Including the Vikings.

Will Chris Carter apologize if Peterson isn’t traded, or will he blame it on his inside source for lying to him?

  34. Well, the words “gag order” and “Chris Carter” do seem to go together pretty nicely.

  35. Given the fact that most teams would want AP to agree to a restructured contract, it is possible that there is a very delicate and quiet conversation happening between MN and some other team or between MN and Peterson’s agent. One of the preconditions for the deal may be that Peterson’s agent keep his mouth shut.

He is half right; it will be the most hated most hated Super Bowl of all time. And yes I would watch.

  37. As usual, context is king, and if you watch the actual Mike and Mike clip, you have to wonder how serious Carter is. He’s laughing, and his choice of words “something is gonna happen” he doesn’t use the word trade, I wonder if he was just ducking the issue entirely by making a joke of it.

  38. If he is a journalist employed by ESPN and he has inside news to report, REPORT IT. Don’t tease it saying he knows but is sworn to secrecy.

You can’t be a journalist and sit on news, but tell everyone you know something but can’t say it.

  39. Inside information….Dallas sends McFadden and the 2015 2nd round pick to Minnesota and receive Adrian Peterson and a 2015 5th round selection.

  40. After all the talk Carter directed at Peterson with his epic blow-up, he is the last person anyone from Adrian’s or Vikings camps would even talk to.

  41. The trolling on this site is strong. CC may be a blowhard and annoying as hell, but as a Viking HOFer, ESPN analyst, and mentor and tutor to many NFL receivers, if you don’t think he is privy to some info that bloggers on this site and the trolls that comment here aren’t, you’re sadly fooling yourselves.

Will it happen. Who knows. Things change with every pick that is made. That is what makes the draft so damn exciting. But to think that he wouldn’t have priviliged info is laughable.

Now, if I was the person that shared said info, and heard him on Mike and Mike this morning, it would probably be the LAST time I shared info with him. But being smart is not something I have EVER heard anyone accuse CC of.

  42. “I know exactly whats going to happen but I’m not telling any of you. All I know is Spielman the magician will have all your heads spinning after the nights over. SKOL”

I find it humorous that you guys think he is a magician just because he makes silly FA signings and trades for FA bust WR’s like Wallace. Just because you see a GM doing something, doesn’t mean it is a good thing.

I bet you still think he is a magician for trading 4 picks for 1st round WR bust- Corduroy Patterson?

Dallas will be back to their 8-8 ways next season.

  44. “but as a Viking HOFer, ESPN analyst, and mentor and tutor to many NFL receivers”

Maybe he should try tutoring and mentoring his own son for a change. The guy was born privileged and couldn’t even hack it in college while he struggled to try to stay on a team and play football.

  45. I wouldn’t give up anything more than a 7th round pick for Adrian Peterson.

Minnesota has a disgruntled, 30 year old running back who hasn’t played for a year, who’s guaranteed 36 million over the next three seasons and they want a #1 pick?

A 7th round pick is a gift … along with taking them off the hook for that monster contract.

Any team that gives up more than a 7th is brain dead.

  46. the packers should trade aaron rodgers, they’ll never win another championship with him constantly choking in the playoffs and being surrounded by the worst roster in the league thanks to the incompetence of ted thompson

  47. Peterson is all but gone. I’m not sure to where yet, but I’m guessing Dallas. I think PFTPoet hit the nail on the head – if Gordon and Gurley are gone by Dallas’ pick, the trade with them is on.

  48. Read the quote, “I am under gag order…:
All of you assume that it is the Vikings that put him under gag order. Maybe is “inside sources” put him under gag order? And then again, maybe the puppet masters told his “inside sources” to throw some misdirection out there to get trolls like you to read and belief it?

  49. There’s been rumors since March 7th (that’s before the national press). We’ll see if the rumors are true, but there’s been TONS that the national press hasn’t picked up on.

  50. What I don’t understand is that the Vikings don’t see the value of the cap relief that trading him would bring – you get rid of his $13 million salary – that’s a huge bonus.
    ______

Why do they need cap relief? Free agency is over, there’s no one left to sign. Might as well spend the $13 million and have a great running back.

  51. Other reasons I think Peterson will be traded:

    1. Peterson said the other night, “I’m still under contract with the Vikings, but we’ll see what happens”. Sounds like something is up.

    2. Speilman has a tell when he’s lying – he shrugs his right shoulder. Look at his press conference the other day, he was shrugging when he said Peterson would not be traded.

    3. Ben Dogra has been eerily silent.

    4. CC still has connections with the Vikings’ organization, so I wouldn’t doubt that he knows something.

  52. I think they will trade him. No coach, especially a coach in his second year and having a QB in the same boat wants to start a malcontent.

Trade him, cut bait and bring in a rookie. Have your growing pains together instead of growing apart.

  53. It would have to be done now, like in the next few hours. Carter does have some legitimate sources at the Vikings and he is still the greatest receiver the organization has had.

    Trade AP before HGH testing….

Vikes will go all Defense in the first round if AP is not traded.

  54. We all know there is so much crapola going on right now, we could retire just on the phone charges from ATT in the past three hours.

My gutt says the Vikes are stuck with AP, they know it and are playing the ‘oh we love him card’. No one wants a 12 mil a year running back who is almost 31 and lately subject to injury.

Spielman is the shrewdest GM in football. He stole the last three drafts so I say Carter knows nuttin. Just blowin smoke.

  55. Why do they need cap relief? Free agency is over, there’s no one left to sign. Might as well spend the $13 million and have a great running back.
    ———–

Free agency is over? There will be veteran players cut after the draft. Maybe use the money to sign current players to extensions, assuming there are any that are even worth re-signing.

  56. “the packers should trade aaron rodgers, they’ll never win another championship with him constantly choking in the playoffs and being surrounded by the worst roster in the league thanks to the incompetence of ted thompson”

Yes. Aaron Rodgers choked in the playoffs. While playing with a torn calf. How on earth did they WIN the SB with him being a playoff choker? Better yet….how does he have the highest post season passer rating of ANY QB to ever play the game of NFL football?

How did that incompetent roster win the division for the 4th straight year (while the vikings sat at home again)??

  57. Love the way there are those stating that Peterson is a nearly 31 year old running back, when he only just rode a camal into his 30th birthday party.

If you don’t like the player then fine… but at least try to get your facts straight!

  58. To everyone saying Dallas:
Don’t be afraid of math it wants to be friends.
I know it’s not as fun to hang out with as pop culture, not as interesting as rumor and not as comforting as herd mentality but give it a chance for once.

Dallas doesn’t have anywhere close to the cap room, nor could they create enough to facilitate a Peterson trade. The closest they could get is if Carr was part of the deal or if Peterson has already renegotiated his deal, and it would probably take both. The first you aren’t suggesting, the second can’t be true because the league hasn’t announced the new deal on its daily transaction report.

  59. If the Vikings must have a 1st round pick for Peterson, then I see the Buccaneers offering their 2016 1st rounder plus either their 3rd round pick this year, or their 2nd round pick this year and receive a later draft pick from the Vikings as change.

Peterson gets reunited with Frazier – whom he was greatly upset about when the Vikings fired him – and will play for Lovie Smith – who always spoke very highly of Peterson.

Surely with Winston, Peterson, and Evans on that offense, the first round pick in 2016 the Buccaneers give up will be much later due to a vastly improved record.

Consider all this Carter blabber as a precursor to your nightmare.

It starts out as everything is just fine, as you get sucked into the premise of a Peterson departure.

While the first hour of the draft unfolds, it becomes fully evident that your giddiness is turned into horror.

Peterson is going nowhere, and the number 600 becomes engrained in your memory.

That is the number of yards ALL DAY dumps on the packers “defense” for 2015, en route to a rushing title, another year over 2k, and a playoff-less packer team wondering what went wrong.

    WELCOME TO YOUR NIGHTMARE!!!!!!!!!

  61. Still angry about the Skol Troll…. Percy and Cordarelle still have a lot of career in front of them… Randy and Cris could be in ANYONE’S top 10 ALL TIME at the position. Williamson was a bust from his first year… I would take the time to find your team and besmirch their legacy too, but instead I will decline and choose to fly the blue skies. You can swing at the pitch in the dirt.

  62. The vets cut after the draft/camps aren’t going to be making much more than league minimums and the Vikes already have enough space to sign their draft picks and anyone else without touching the AP cap money.

If he gets traded, it will be for a 1st or a very high 2nd rounder, or a combo of a late 2nd and a veteran player of need.

I was playing that game with some cousins a few months ago. Then 2 of them took it up a notch, and the guy who scored the point got to hit his opponent’s bare stomach with the paddle.

I call that game “Peterson pong”.

  65. Rumor has it Spielman is trying to trade AP to the Packers for Brandon Bostick, Ryan Longwell and Darren Sharper. Thompson just keeps hanging up on him…

  72. “Still angry about the Skol Troll…. Percy and Cordarelle still have a lot of career in front of them”

That’s a lot of high value picks that were spent on kickoff returners that teams have to “wait” on to show they don’t suck. These guys weren’t 7th round developmental prospects.

  73. Not everyone is as dumb as the Vikings were with that Dallas trade that saw H. Walker going to Minn. and the Lombardi Trophy going to Dallas.

  74. Why don’t the Vikings want to trade him? It would be a great move for them. Gets rid of all the noise and gets some value for him considering he probably only has 2 good years left.

It seems like a no brainer to me.

True… but what have the vaunted Packers done in the last 4 years. Went 2-4 in the playoffs with the best QB in football. Weren’t the Packers fans talking dynasty in 2011 when they were 13-0 and destroying every team they faced? Looks like it didn’t work out as planned.

  76. 1st and 2nd or 1st and 3rd sounds about right for a guy who will rush for 2,000+ yards this year. And next year.

If you could get Parker, Peters and Kendricks out of the draft, that’s a homerun and a half. Maybe draft another rb too. or take a flier on a gent like Chris Polk who Eagles let go since they signed 143 rb’s in the offseason. Very talented, just buried on depth chart behind Shady and Sproles. 1.6mil was his tender.

  77. Not a smart move by Chris Carter, but his ego got in the way. His “impressions” about the Peterson situation are probably accurate.

Every team in the playoffs that doesn’t win the Super Bowl loses. Your comeback is a bit odd considering that the Vikings have lost the playoffs every year they have ever participated in them over the last 55 years.

You gotta actually be in the playoffs to have a chance at winning it all, so I guess you got that going for you when it comes to disappointing playoff losses.

  79. If he is under a gag order that means he is not to say ‘something is going to happen’.

  83. Carter sucks as a post Viking. I actually hate all NFL media talking heads.

  84. I herd CC is taking money from Dogra for trolling. Imagine that Mr Integrity. I am canceling my ESPN Insider because this stupid comment. He is such phony.

  85. Once Chris open his mouth about a trade in the works and he is not to talk about it and then he does out it. The Vikings GM would have killed the deal at that point. Then find the leak in his ORG. Spielman or any other GM would do the same thing. Going into the draft. You don’t want to give any creditability that you have a leak. If there was a deal. The moment Chris talk about something happening. The trade would have been killed.

  86. Cris Carter has become too much. Every time I see him on BSPN or NFL Network it is unfortunate for me. Cris is crying, yelling over the top stuff no one should have forced on them by any network.

  87. If they wait until August they can trade with the Packers who will give them some (secretly)soon to be released veterans in return for AP.
