No. 12 pick becomes key piece of Eagles-Titans deal

Getty Images

Yes, the Eagles are trying to move from No. 20 to No. 2.  Yes, the Eagles are willing to move quarterback Sam Bradford in order to make that happen.

The key to putting the various pieces together could be the 12th overall pick, currently held by the Browns.

It would require the Eagles to strike a deal with the Browns, which would send Bradford to Cleveland and the 12th pick to Tennessee.  Presumably, the Eagles would have to give up even more to Cleveland — and possibly would have to assume the contract of quarterback Johnny Manziel.

So before figuring out what it would take to get from No. 20 to No. 2, the question becomes what it will take to get from Bradford to No. 12.  Ultimately, the Eagles may have to pull off both deals in order to bring Mariota to Philadelphia.

  1. It’s not going to happen. The Browns have made some dumb deals, but they’re not that dumb.

  2. Mariota completed 68% of his passes last year, but he completed only 53% of throws after the first read. I hope he can adjust. He’ll probably need a system like Chip’s to survive.

  3. Bears should jump in on this action add picks maybe unload Cutler on Cleveland since they like bad QB’s

  4. Bradford for a 1st is asinine! 2ACL’s and he will want a new LT contract. They are better off taking best 2 on the board with 1st 2 1st rd picks and taking Bryce Petty in 2nd.

  5. Not. Gonna. Happen.

Browns aren’t giving diddly for Bradford who won’t extend his contract with them.

Good luck w Bradford Chip- you’re gonna need it.

  6. Just imagine…

Manziel and Tebow on the same team.

They should make them roommates or something. And film it.

  7. WAIT, WAIT, WAIT A DARN MINUTE!
The EAGLES always end up in last place?
That Washington fan would never get drafted with all the stuff he’s been smoking.

  8. Bradford is not worth the #12
Maybe #43 but that’s kind of high for a guy who rivals IR3 as the premier QB on IR every year….

  9. I don’t want to lose Mariota to a trade, unless it includes an RGIII-type windfall to the Titans. This kid’s a much bigger deal than Whisenhunt could possibly imagine (based on his past decision-making). Mariota’s gonna turn out to be somewhere between Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers. That’s a wide range, but anywhere on that chart of excellence is major keeper territory.

  10. Why would the Browns give Philly # 12 for Bradford, when they may only get one year out of him, and perhaps that year with another injury.

It’s like all these scenarios are being scripted by Philly radio guys trying to dream of the best deals for the Eagles. I know Chip Kelly is a genious and all, but the rest of the league doesn’t make personnel decisions with the sole intent of helping the Eagles.

  11. I hope they give up the house for Marcus, and here is why, 1. I hate the Eagles 2. Ken Whisenhunt thinks the world of Marcus, and its a proven fact from Ken’s time in AZ, He does NOT know how to pick a QB. So my suggestion has always been since him being fired from AZ, And a few years before that, to find out what he thinks and go in the opposite direction, and more times then not, its the right choice.

Sorry Titan fans that guy has to go.

  12. Not happening as long as Bradford and his agent keep saying they will not extend his contract with CLE. Manziel has been quietly impressive since leaving rehab and has dedicated himself to studying the playbook rather than the bottom of a beer bottle. I don’t see CLE making this move without getting a kings random in return.

  13. Interesting fact. I wonder what an NFL QB completes on second read on average? Peyton probably is still 65% or more I’d bet. Why doesn’t this site have any more news today? It’s the same two or three stories rehashed over and over again.

  14. Every year Logical crows about the Racistskins, only to crawl back in his hole come October when they have been eliminated from the playoffs yet again. (fyi the Eagles have won the NFC East 7 times since 2000, the Skins once).

  15. My Browns – make the trades to land Mariota for the Browns. Chip will then do everything possible to trade directly with you. Worst case you get stuck with Mariota which given your prior drafting history (Weeden, Gilbert, Maziel) is not a bad thing.

  16. Its easy really:

Eagles: Bradford, Eagles 1st Rd, Eagles 2nd Round
    for
    Browns: Manziel and #12 pick

    Then

Eagles: #12 Pick, Manziel, and Next years 1st rd
    for
    Tennessee for #2 pick.

  17. Browns fan here.

That would top the stupidity of the seemingly un-top-able stupidity of the franchise over the last 15 years. Bradford is worthless.

Trade up only for Leonard Williams or Mariota yourself.

Trade with Eagles only if Fletcher Cox is included, not Bradford.

Or stay put and draft NT and WR in 1st round, and roll with a sober Johnny.

Bradford stole $60M from the Rams.

    Eff him.

  18. only thing missing from today is the announcement that the Browns will be the team on Hard Knocks this year !

  19. That would mean Sanchize, Tebow, and Manzel, all on the same team, as well as the number 2 pick for Kelly. That might mean the Clown Car would move down the road from NY to Philly, or Chip Kelly is the next evil genius. Kevin Costner is the only other guy I know who could make all that happen.

  20. This is why the Philadelphia Eagles are ringless and last place in the NFC East anually. Moves like this. Thank GOD I’m a Redskin fan. #LOLPhilly
    =======================================

Seriously? Redskins were FLEECED going after RGIII!!!

  21. Mariota, Sanchize, Tebow, and Manziel all on the same team?!?

Can you say Hard Knocks? They could do 3 hours every episode with that lineup!

If the Titans will not accept #12 and #19 for the #2 pick, why would they accept #12 and #20?

    ————————–

Wow. Cleveland wouldn’t go further than 12 and 19. The Eagles would go further than 12 and 20 by throwing in players/picks. Therefore, Tennessee gets more. That wasn’t a hard concept.

  23. So why would either the browns or Bradford want a new deal worked out right away? 1 year left on the deal gives the browns a chance to cut ties if he gets hurt yet again or sucks. If he blows up and Cleveland kicks ass, they’d gladly pay him and why wouldn’t he want to stay there if they wanted him so bad that they traded a first rounder for him and he was successful? Isn’t that the best scenario when a team really wants you AND you’ve been successful there?

  24. Add to the fact that Mariotta is going to pull an “Eli Manning” and tell the Titans he won’t play for them.

  25. I actually think Tampa should be taking Mariota over Winston. Mariota will be the next Matt Ryan at worse. Winston could destroy a team.

  26. If this happens this will tick off quite a few players.

-Bradford will be bummed to be in Cleveland.
-Manziel will be bummed to likely have no chance to compete with Mariota.
-Demarco Murray will be REALLY bummed because playing with Bradford was one reason he decided to come to Philly.

  27. Seems smart for CLE. You get out of JFF’s contract, get a decent QB when healthy, and all it costs you is one of your 1st round picks. How many 1sts have they burned on QB’s that didn’t work out?

  28. Just bite the bullet if your Philly and hope Tennessee is blowing smoke about Mariota and see if they go with Williams. Then try for the 3rd overall with Jacksonville. It would be lighter on the amount to give up.

  29. Pick #11 is for sale! If the Eagles don’t want it, get ready Brownies to be fleeced into giving up picks to move up one spot for the 3rd time by trader Rick.

  30. How pathetic is this that Chip Kelly feels he cannot win in the NFL without Marcus Mariota. Have we ever witnessed a college coach gamble so much to bring his former QB with him to his NFL destination? Especially for a QB that has a proven history of not delivering in the 2 biggest games he played in during his college career. 2 chances to win a National Championship, zero wins both times. This is why it’s 19,800 days since the city of Philly has seen a championship from their football team. This is is going to prove to be another bad decision in a long list of bad draft day decisions for the Eagles.

  31. could always trade up with Houston to get 16. Reports in TN have said they would prefer top 16 pick. Trade 20, and a 3rd or 4th, to get to 16. Now you take 16, first next year, first year after, a player or two on roster…and now you are cooking with gas. Maybe take back a contract Tenn doesn’t want, that will help fill a gap on Eagles roster since they aren’t replenishing w/ draft picks and now a player or two lighter as well….maybe Andy Levitre, Eagles do need a G.

  32. Keep Bradford and draft a wide receiver. Why be as foolish as the Redskins or Mike Ditka?

  33. Browns fans saying the team wouldn’t do anything that stupid. LOL
This is why you’re still Browns fans. Can’t remember last season.

  34. “Demarco Murray will be REALLY bummed because playing with Bradford was one reason he decided to come to Philly.”

Not a problem…..he’ll be part of the deal Philly makes with Cleveland. Demarco AND Bradford to the Browns for the #12 pick.

  35. Why in the WORLD would ANYBODY EVER trade ANYTHING for that lemon Sam Bradford? Seriously. I actually think a couple of GMs are having a little fun with old Chip… And they have stuck him with Bradford… It’ll be Bradford for a couple weeks, then he’ll be injured. Then we’ll see old Buttfumble for a couple of weeks… and then……. TEBOW TIME. (hehe)

  36. The Browns need to go Mariota or nothing. If your fans wake up Mobday and the highlight of the weekend was getting Sam Bradford just call it a season now.

  37. Bradford and DeMarco for 12 and 19, which Philly flips to Tennessee for 2?

If you could draft Bradford and Murray in the draft at 12 and 19, every Browns fan would take it. Bradford would agree to sign a LT contract since he would have his college buddy, and roommate with him. Both are in their early 20’s, have experience in the league – so there is no rookie learning curve…this is a a deep WR draft…Hartline and Bowe were added through FA.

Chip is infatuated with Mariota, he traded away McCoy so he obviously does not feel that a top RB is needed in his spread offense, thus Murray is expendable.

I know it might sound crazy – and I am not looking to be beat down by suggesting this – but it might just make sense.

You may now commence with attacking me for this lol

  38. Browns fans that don’t want Bradford, I get it but it’s not your call. Farmer and Pettine have been trying to get him for months. Say hello Sam.

  39. How about this Philly, Fletcher Cox and Sam Bradford for #12??

If not, then Cleveland will take Sam Bradford and your 2016 first rounder for #12.

  40. This is starting to look more and more like Ditka and his love affair with Ricky Williams. I understand Kelly is in enamored with having Mariota on his team but dismantling his team and its future in the process is not very prudent. It would not surprise me if he does something stupid so he can pick Mariota. I understand why he wants him but if you have to give up multiple first-round picks and players the price is way too high, especially since the drafting of QBs is more like a crap-shoot.

    ————————————————–

Haven’t seen that stat before… wonder how it compares to current NFL QB’s? My first thought is that a dropoff between the first and second reads should be normal, but that’s not really based on anything other than my opinion.

  43. A lot of haters here. If Bradford would have played 10 games in either of the last two seasons you wouldn’t be able to get him for 3 first round picks. If Sam stays healthy he is a top 10 QB in this league. I’m not a Browns or Eagles fan I just remember watching this guy in 2013 and thinking he had finally starting putting it all together.

  44. Browns have McCown… why do they need Bradford again?

Got a feeling this master plan for Chip to get to #2 falls apart here. If Chip’s got such a woodie for Mariota, the Browns are then in the drivers seat to drive a hard bargain for a better player than Bradford…

My call is Titans trade their pick to the Jets once the Bucs take Winston. Titans still get an elite receiver at the 6th slot, plus a lot more from the Jets.

  45. Poor Mariota. No matter where he ends up now, he’s already the most pressurized player in the league.

  46. The Titans are completely bluffing about drafting Mariota. If they truly believed he was “their guy” the pick wouldn’t be available. Franchise QBs are too valuable to trade away. They’re just create as much hyping for the pick as possible and get a deal like the Rams did.

  47. pomanski said “If Sam stays healthy he is a top 10 QB in this league.”

    That’s a BIG if, friend.

Granted, Sam’s probably looking at Matt Stafford as a role model of oft-injured-got-better-stayed-healthy right now, but, man, I wouldn’t put money on Sam staying healthy. He couldn’t even last through PRE-season without an injury last year.

Safe money says Cleveland drives a hard bargain that is either without Bradford or that doesn’t over-value Bradford.

Seriously, the Browns have McCown. The ideal clipboard veteran made good who Manziel/Mariota/insert-rookie-name-here can easily overtake to become starter. Bradford is going to be an angry, sullen teenager in this role.

  48. Bradford and Kendrick’s for 12th overall… Then 12 20 fletcher cox, and next years 1st for marriota book it… It’s a lot, but I’m willing to take the shot.. Much better then having Bradford, butt fumble, and tebow fml

Tebow and Manziel and Sanchez in same depth chart behind Mariotta. Kelly is gold.

    ………………………………………………..

When Mariotta’s arm grows a Lil tired you bring in the others for some razzle dazzle. I like this type of playing.

No one cares about Super Bowls before the invention of the cell phone. The LOLskins are one of the worst franchises in pro sports, and will be as long as Dan Snyder owns the team.

  52. Gonna be pretty darn awesome around here if Johnny Manziel is involved in this trade.

  53. When Chip traded for Bradford, I knew it was just a bargaining chip in his attempt to go get Mariota. Now all Cleveland has to do is sit tight and make Chip pay a ransom.

I would think Chip is better served going straight to the source and do the deal with TN. That will make the RGIII deal look like a bargain and then the question is, what to do with Bradford, nobody seems to want him.

Would love to see that on Hard Knocks this year.

  55. So very little of all this makes sense; should not have spent time reading what I did. There is not a trade mentioned that would move the Browns to do anything; that is anything, in case you had gone for another beer.

  56. I don’t understand the Mariotta hype. I can not get the images of him, during the championship game against Ohio State, out of my head. He looked overwhelmed by the speed of the rush – he was inaccurate, skittish and indecisive. When his receivers had key drops he looked deflated. Everything “got the in his head.”

  57. If Cleveland trades the 12th pick for Sam Bradford, it will be as clear a sign as any that God has forsaken Cleveland altogether.

  58. 1st round picks after 15 have 50/50 bust rate. I’d trade Bradford for 19 and hope

  59. I love Jimmy J. When asked, ‘what does a great coach with so- so players have’. Answer, a losing team.
Eagles coach clearly gets it, without a top Qb, your going nowhere.

  60. My you folks have just worked yourselves up to a frenzy and over what? Compared to Mariota, RGIII looked like solid gold and look what happened there. The only reason that all this froth has been whipped up is that the Titans have serious doubts as to whether Mariota is worth a #2 to start with.

  61. Does the dumbass Browns front office understand he doesn’t want to play for u so why in the hell would u trade for him. STUPID. Go after 2 good players in round 1. U have to many holes to fill on your team to trade away them for one guy

  62. God everyone is talking about these rumors like the Eagles are the ones putting them out. There hasn’t been a single reporter who has said that even 1 of these rumors have came from a source within the Eagles. The same thing with the Titans. All they’ve said is they have got some substantial offers and didn’t even say it was from the Eagles. All this 1st 2nd move to 12 then 20 19 back in time 537 then 9A75g6 bs is coming from the talking heads guessing what is happening.

Its all a lie to create page views. Your an idiot if you believe that the Eagles have made a fraction of the 5 dozen offers they have supposedely made today. Get a grip people. Everytime a top player comes out who has a former coach in the nfl everyone automatically assumes that that coach is trying to move heaven and earth for that player. And nothing EVER ends up happening.

  63. Trent Dilfer had an outstanding breakdown of the Mariota/Winston comparison. It showed where Mariota is flawed due to his system. Granted, Kelly’s system is the same but the NFL defenses are better. The red zone might be a problem for Mariota because the field is shortened and so are the defensive areas. Dilfer is at times a bit touched but his analysis on this seemed sound. Forcing a deal with a bunch of picks/players for Mariota is a huge risk.

I’m not a MM disciple but seriously? You mean that same look Brady had in 2008 and 2012 Superbowls vs the Giants or was it the look Peyton had in 2014? A pass rush like the one he faced in the championship game will make even the greatest of all time look shaky. He still threw for 333 2 tds 1 int with a 67% completion rate.
