Pats wrap first round by taking Malcom Brown

The Patriots held the 32nd and final pick in the first round of the 2015 draft.  And they didn’t trade it.

Instead, they used it on Texas defensive lineman Malcom Brown.

A versatile player, it makes sense that a coach who loves versatility would be attracted to Brown.  Especially with Vince Wilfork now gone.

Six feet, two inches tall and 320 pounds, Brown declared early for the draft after being named an All-American in 2014.

For Brown’s sake, it would have been better to go at the top of round two, since he would have been eligible for a maximum deal of four years.  The Patriots can now use the fifth-year option to hold Brown in place through 2019.

  1. Loved how they played Your Love just before the pick to pay homage to the World Champions! I don’t wanna lose your love….TONIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!

Yet another example of how the World Champion Patriots rule the NFL. 🙂

  2. Wow they just stole him!!.. Man Ryan Grigson you could have taken him, but you wanted a 5’10 WR when you can’t stop the run? God bless you and I hope you rented in Indy..

  3. Once again, Belichick plays chess and everyone else plays checkers. I’m actually directing this comment at Denver. At least for tonight. Trade up for Shane Ray? First of all he would have been there for you without trading up, and secondly, he probably would have been available in round two. But I digress. Ladies and gentleman, your Super Bowl XLIX Champions, The New England Patriots.

  4. Just like Wilfork dropping down the board. Monster pick, best value in the first round. pats had to be surprised this guy fell this far.

  5. It’s about time the NFL wrapped it up. If they don’t want the media to leak the picks before they are announced maybe they should try announcing the picks when they are made instead of feeding us commercials every 10 mins.

  6. Belichick let the draft come to him and that strategy appears to have worked well. Brown is the rare choice that is both the best available and the highest need.

In reality, all of these first round picks are expected to be excellent players if not stars but only a quarter of them at best will reach that potential.

What’s with Grigson passing on Brown and picking a TY Hilton clone? He must have been the highest rated player on his board but the Colts seem to believe that offensive skill players deserve a premium.

  7. The Patriots doing it the Patriot Way. Now that they have replaced Vince, they need to replace Revis, Browner, Vareen, Ridley, Ayers …

  8. The year was 2004. The Pats were coming off of a Super Bowl Championship and replaced an older nose tackle (Ted Washington) with a talented NT who fell in the 1st round. That was Big Vince Wilfork at #21. Similar scenario here with Brown. Hope we get the same result in the player and the result the following season (back2back).

  9. Yes!!!
Exactly what the Pats needed vs all the run heavy teams they will face in the AFC East!!!
    Way to go Pats!!!
    Can you say REPEAT!!!!!

  10. Heck of a pick. I’m mildly surprised that an intriguing 320lb DT with production and upside fell this far (not completely surprised … in some respects, Malcolm Brown does remind me a bit of Ryan Pickett out of college … talented, big lineman, a bit inconsistent). Granted, there’s a tendency to place an inordinately high value on pass rush ability, even for interior lineman, in the draft, so bigger guys tend to fall (Ahtyba Rubin falling that far in his draft year surprised me … Wilfork probably should’ve gone higher, and you can go on down the line for a lot of DT’s). Furthermore, edge guys get the priority, more often than not, early in the draft.

I think what “works” here isn’t that he’s a “Patriots”/Belichick pick (Belichick has busted on interior lineman before … Ron Brace comes to mind). The thing that works here is that he’s a talented kid that won’t be rushed into any key role with Siliga, Branch, and Easley ahead of him. Thus, they can pick and choose spots, and Brown’s scheme versatility gives them flexibility on when and how to use him. In time, he’ll could develop into a nice big man complement to Easley, a Booger McFarland to Warren Sapp.

If you can’t succeed as a DLineman in a Patriots defense, you aren’t going to be worrying about that second contract. He’ll be put in the best place to showcase his skills and he’ll definitely be seeing the postseason for the majority of his time in NE.

  12. 1 draft-day trade (or was it 2) in the first round…and those trades seemed pretty minor. Guess that 5th year option is valued pretty highly.

  13. Colts and Jets have filed charges with the league office about this pick. They aren’t sure how, but they believe that somehow the Patriots cheated for this guy to be available at #32. Ted Wells to investigate, report expected after Patriots win SB50.

  14. Haha……GRIGSON showed us….!! I’ll take a stud receiver while you all have fun running it down our throats. With that D they better put up 50 a game.

  15. Ironically, like Wilfork fell to them in 2004, Brown falls to them as Wilfork’s replacement at 32. Kiper had this guy as the 12th best player on his board.

  16. The Pats front seven is suddenly very young, very good, very deep. Next up. DB and OL..

  17. For Brown’s sake, it is probably better to land with the supernbowl champs at the end of rd 1 than the worst teams in the league for less money at the top of rd 2.

Are they stockpiling defensive players named Malcolm, regardless of spelling. Shrewd move, Belichick….

    —-

At some point this season, the Malcolm’s will combine for some great play, Grigson and Harbaugh will fume. Brunell will cry, and the NFL will legislate next off season that players named Malcolm cannot come within 5 yards of each other on the field.

    #Malcolmgate.

  19. he just said he will be one of the best picks the pats ever made, ……….remember brady,,,,,,,

  20. DT Brown. 19th best player in draft IMO. Has scheme versatility. Run stopper with above avg pass rush for position
    Not too shabby 😙💨💨💨💨💨💨💨

  21. “Bust”

Yeah right. Only 13 of Belichick’s previous first round picks have been pro bowl or near pro bowl caliber players.

Ignore the facts though and keep up your emotional hating of the Pats.

  22. Look at all the angry Patriot haters 🙂

Do us fans of the World Champion Patriots a favor. Don’t be mad yet. Save your rage and tears for when the Wells Report comes out and it doesn’t say what you hope it says. We fans of the World Champions and rulers of your teams are looking forward to the hilarity! 🙂

Good when he plays , takes plays off, lacks conditioning runs out of gas.

Surprisingly the same thing they said about Wilfork coming out of college. Wilfork was trying not to get injured. Not sure if it’s the same situation here. In any case, he’s got talent, and he’s great value at 32. BB will get the most out of him.

I was thinking the exact same thing… The Colts problem wasn’t offense before they picked up all their offseason acquisitions… they need a better front 7 or they will lose regardless of what Luck can do. Irsay is setting up the team to be just like the Colts of most of the 2000’s. Regular season winners, playoff losers.

  25. Awesome start!!!
Now let’s get some O-line depth!!
Protect Brady for 5 more years!!!

Surprisingly, the Patriots pass defense was the 4th worse in the league in the second half of the season last year.

As good as Revis was, and he cannot be replaced, they still gave up yards playing bend but don’t break.

Key will be QB pressure. If they can rush the passer, the secondary (which will be quite a bit worse) will look decent. Shutting down elite QBs will be much harder though.

  27. Highly doubt Vince Wilfork is that easily replaceable.
I will be watching the middle to see if runs take place on the pats this season.

  28. I don’t know who & if the cheaters got lucky…. You’d have to clarify to whom you were speaking about, however the World Champion New England Patriots just keep doing it right & getting great talent & dominating the NFL…can’t wait to see what a healthy D. Easley coupled with Brown will do… Just like getting 2 1st rounders to start the 2015 season…. Go Pats!!!

  29. The more savvy moves by the Patriots the more suffering for the haters. New England has been picking at the bottom of the draft for more than a decade and they have the most wins in regular and post season play. just kiss the rings, clowns.

    Cheaters got lucky.

Are you referring to when the Colts got Luck? Not sure they cheated for that, except deliberately lose a few games.

Pro tip: don’t lend Grigson or Kensil any footballs during a game – they can’t handle the pressure!
