Report: Wes Welker assessed for concussion effects, gets positive news on health

Welker

Free agent wide receiver Wes Welker reportedly has received good news regarding his health after suffering three concussions with Denver over the last two seasons.

Welker told Mike Klis of WUSA-TV in Denver that he was examined in February by Dr. Stanley Herring, a member of the NFL’s Head, Neck and Spine Committee.

And according to Welker, the examinations went well.

“I knew there were concerns out there but on top of that I wanted to know for my own peace of mind. If there was something wrong, I wanted to know,” Welker said, according to WUSA-TV, an NBC affiliate. “The doctor said some people are able to take those hits. They get up and are able to come back from them. And there’s some people who get them and they’re never the same. For me, everything came out all good.

“My cognitive tests were good. All kinds of tests came out good. I had a trip to Miami and [their] doctors said everything looked good.”

Welker, who turns 34 on Friday, hauled in 49 passes for 464 yards and two touchdowns in 2014 for Denver. He told WUSA-TV he wants to play in 2015.

“I am 100 percent committed to keep playing,” Welker told Klis. “I feel like every day that goes by, the chances are less so. But I want to play.”

If there’s a market for Welker, it could possibly emerge after the draft. A club signing Welker before May 12 would have him count against the compensatory-pick formula.
