Buccaneers told Winston to delete the crab photo

Jameis Winston might have a sense of humor.

But he also has a boss.

The Buccaneers quarterback moved hastily to delete the self-aware/irresponsible photo of himself in full team regalia with a plate of crab legs this morning. And it was hastily done because they pushed him.

According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, once Bucs officials became aware of the photo (which popped up around midnight last night), “they encouraged having it removed from his account.”

Stroud also suggested that the photo somehow wasn’t a making light of Winston’s “hook-up” from Publix that captured the attention of everyone in the football world (other than Jim Harbaugh), but rather a nod to a captain from the “Deadliest Catch” who had given him a crab to autograph for a charity auction recently.

Also, if you stand next to me, and a warm liquid begins to splash upon my leg, I can only assume it is raining. Someplace where the rain is yellow.

I’m torn on this one. I wrote last night that I thought it was funny (which it was, especially at the end of a long day). Florio, the lawyer in the room (also, the adult) pointed out the potential legal pitfalls of making such a joke.

Both can be true, in varying degrees, at the same time.

The picture’s not going anywhere, as the Internet will make sure it lives forever. But while leaving it up might have allowed Winston the opportunity to tell everyone it was a harmless joke, it could have also been viewed as a tacit approval from the team.

And at a time when they were investigating everything to make sure they were doing the right thing drafting him, that obviously wasn’t a step they were willing to take.

  1. It’s simple, you don’t voluntarily bring more attention to something like that.

  2. Already the headaches begin with this idiot. Good Luck TB. I’m afraid you’ll be spend the next ten years running around behind this guy cleaning up one PR & legal mess after another.

So glad he’s not on my team.

  3. All the photo showed is how arrogant this kid is. To some extent you need arrogance and self confidence in a leader, but I think this crossed a line and says the kid thinks he can get away with anything he wants to.

It took the people who just agreed to pay him millions to instruct him to take down something that never should have been posted in the first place.

  4. Shows the immaturity the kid still has. Yes I understand he is 21 and he wanted to have fun, but many Adults put their jobs on the line as they had felt that he possibly could turn the corner. Doesn’t seem like he did.

  5. Not a good start. Especially in the sports world where the phrase “moving on” seems to equate to forgiveness for all sins. In the minds of the sinners at least. I’m looking at you Bill Belichick..

  6. After seeing this I am sure there are even more GM’s who are glad they don’t have this player and the distractions he brings on their team.

  7. It would actually be a little funny if he hadn’t just recently tried to pretend he didn’t do anything wrong and got them for free instead of admitting he messed up.

  8. Simple solution for everybody (average joe to star bright) –
Delete Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, SnapChat, Instagram.

Social Media is ruining the world.

  9. I think people take things to seriously. I would have taken the eagles deal if true.

Jameis enjoy Tampa and the hundred of Publix’s that surround it.

  10. The guy just doesn’t get it… The Buccaneers certainly “hooked him up” by guaranteeing him millions of dollars, and he shines light on his being “hooked up” with crab legs?

    Enjoy your franchise QB Buccaneers.

  11. Obviously. I think we all realize Jameis doesn’t have the two brain cells left that ate required to realize that was a bad idea.

  12. While funny, it still shows his immaturity, much like dressing for a game when suspended and told not to do so.

  13. I don’t know why they would tell hm to take it down. They should embrace this. It could be a huge marketing campaign: sell sponge crab claws at the buc’s games (in place of the number 1 fingers) etc…they could sell crab legs at the games too, it’d be huge. They should embrace this. Because that’s about the only value they’ll get from him while he’s on the team for a short while.

  14. Meh… the team is being overly sensitive. It’s possible that posting that picture could show a cavalier attitude toward his past wrongs, but I think most people saw it for what it was, a pretty funny joke at his own expense.

I’m usually pretty hard on foolishness, but this didn’t seem offensive to me.

  15. But while leaving it up might have allowed Winston the opportunity to tell everyone it was a harmless joke, it could have also been viewed as a tacit approval from the team.

Or it simply says ” I REALLY don’t care what ANYBODY thinks about me now !! ” GOOD LUCK with this ARROGANT CLOWN , Lovie !!

  16. The Bucs were always a team that I never disliked.
Now….I can’t wait to see this moron crash and burn, and
bring the team down with him for their amazingly woeful judgement!
It really is astounding how stupid it was for ANY team to pick such an idiot.

  17. After spending months investigating everything about this guy, the Bucs decided he would be a fine representative for their franchise and invested the first overall pick in him. Can you imagine everyone associated with the team with their faces in their hands, shaking their heads, right now?

  18. It’s OK for grown man living in there parents basement to make jokes about Winston and crabs. But yet if Winston making jokes along, with the still at home loser he is a curse SMH!!!

  19. An instant millionaire with a $0.10 head. What’s even more sad is that nobody in that room with him stepped up to say ‘funny, but a bad idea.’

  20. If the Bucs didn’t draft him at one, I don’t thing he would have been drafted in round one. It is similar to Tebow by Denver and Manziel by Browns. Heisman QBs never pan out…

  21. Probably the first time since this kid showed his talent that someone actually told him “no” or didn’t bend the rules for him.

Now the question becomes does he respong like a man and learn from it or does he become a petulant child.

One path leads to fame and fortune and the other to failure.

Is he smart enough yo know the difference?

  22. Day one and this guy is already making Jamarcus Russel look like a card carrying member of Mensa.

  23. I think Winston was just trying to show that he can poke a little fun at himself. However I can see from the team’s standpoint that the picture probably wasn’t the type of publicity they wanted right after selecting him.

This will be a learning process for Winston. The college days are over and now he needs to act like a pro everyday! He has the physical tools…now he needs to develop the professional attitude.

  24. you were wrong about it being funny. it’s an arrogant and incredibly stupid move, especially considering he still refuses to accept responsibility for the incident in question.

  25. Guys this isn’t about humor… I have a sense of humor but I also know what to make fun of what not to. Joking about a crime you committed is a plain dumb and immature move. Sad to see so many people don’t understand that part. It’s not about “sensitivity”, it’s about making the right decision, something Winston has proved he can’t quite handle.

  26. from PFT…”Darcie Glazer Kassewitz, a Glazer sibling who is also part of the ownership group, has reportedly raised some questions about whether Winston is the right person to be the face of the franchise.”

How much you want to bet she’s saying “I TOLD YOU SO!” right now?

Meanwhile, Jeneis is posting pics of Bucco Bruce and saying “hey, it’s Captain Crabby Patty!”

  27. I think the Buc’ s may want to upgrade their investigative/vetting process of players. This boy’s history shows a total lack of maturity but the Buc’s were comfortable with him because he told them none of it was his fault. Less than 12hrs of being drafted, hasn’t even signed his first contract yet and he’s up to his usual crap. The Buc’s are becoming the new Browns.

  28. I am less concerned about the taunting arrogance of Mr. Winston than the suggested “explanation” apparently offered: (It was) “… a nod to a captain from the “Deadliest Catch” who had given him a crab to autograph for a charity auction recently.” Enabling behavior is going to do nothing but encourage Mr. Winston. Mr. Winston is not the Bucs problem. The problem IS the Bucs. Mr. Winston will follow the well trodden path of blaming others and escaping consequences – at least until his first deposition in the rape case.

  29. Ha Ha! Look at me!!
I’m a millionaire thief and rapist, and I don’t care!
The Bucs thoroughly checked me out, and I’m cool!

I bet I’ll be really funny as a fat-ass, lazy, marginally talented, immobile, INT machine QB for the worst team in the league for the next 3 years until I’m unemployed!

At least then I’ll get all of these people out of my house.

  30. i saw the list of QB’s that went 1-2 in the draft over the past 20 years. 1 was great and the other was a tremendous bust. I think in this case both will be a bust.

  31. Does anyone else besides me see the parallel between this guy/Mariota and Manning/Leaf?

    Titans got a steal.

  32. The only thing missing was a naked, passed-out coed in the background. This guy should be in prison, not playing in the NFL.

  33. 10 minutes on the job…. already embarrassing the organization. Its a new record!

  34. Arrogance is not to be confused with assertiveness and self-reliance. Something rings hollow about this kid. If he’s so “blessed” as he says he is, then his idea of showing gratitude and humility is coming up short.

  35. That is truly someone who does not get it. Enjoy that TB. This kid is going to go down in flames, and it is not even close. Too immature to lead an NFL team. Wasted talent.

  36. Why so serious? If he had stuffed the crabs legs down his pants legs I could see the problem. Also it isn’t like he is wearing a Publix hat to market the grocery chain that said they would give him free crab legs. In my opinion this is nothing more then him having some fun and enjoying his big night. Heck he might not have even realized that the picture he posted would be considered to be in poor taste. People are just too quick to judge others.

  37. Did anyone expect anything different from this immature loser. Incredible that someone is willing to pay a kid w/ a brain the size of a peanut such huge bucks.

  38. It was a funny picture, but it showed a lack of discretion. It’s like when you are thinking about posting a Facebook status that you know would be hilarious, but would also offend people and they might take it the wrong way, you just sometimes have to show some restraint. Only, in this case, instead of Facebook, Winston is dealing with the NFL fanbase.

  39. This guys mind set reminds me of Ryan Leaf coming out of the draft and said he was going to Vegas and the other end of the spectrum, Manning said he was ready to start studying and playing football.

Winston is extremely talented but he’s here for pleasure not business. He’ll make a lot of money and be gone in 3-5 years.

  40. To be totally fair though, it probably would have been in his best interest if the picture he had posted would have been him with his grandmother since that was the reason he didn’t attend the draft.

  41. Any truth to the rumor the Bucs have finally returned Chip Kelly’s call and have stated, “Yes, we would like to make that trade for the 1st pick. Please call us back.”

  42. Did it for charity for the mike alstott foundation and a donation to be sent to it from the deadliest catch in name of jabo, so its harmless, can’t wait til he turns league on its ear and leads bucs to super bowl and shuts all the haters up

  43. Hey look another Winston story about nothing. It saya right on the caption that he’s thanking Capt. Keith for the crablegs he sent to Winston’s house for the draft party.

Good to know Winston hysteria is alive and well. He’s good at bringing the retard out in people. I’m sure Gantt will have another story up and running the next time this guy takes a dump.

  44. Arrogant beyond belief.

Stole the goods in the first place.
Then blamed his school (who gave him a free ride and trained him up) instead of manning up and taking responsiblity.
Then jokes about it for all to see.

Yeah, great sense of humor. More like “I’ll do whatever the hell I want”

  45. Jameis should tell them to stick it!

    HE’s the star, not them.

HE’s the #1 pick, not them.

Geez – don’t let the man put you down Jameis. You earned it now party and have fun!!!!

    LOL

    Good luck Bucks.

  46. Only a helplessly stupid person would bring more attention on their biggest mistake to date, people get guilty from doing crap, and that’s GOOD. Unfortunately, Winston seems broken; his knucklehead factor is off the charts.

  47. I hope you all sleep very soundly at night by riding Winston to the ground before he’s even stepped foot on the practice field.

If all of you took as much of stand on actual issues as you do with the inevitable “troubled” draft pick each year, the world would be a lot better off.

  48. This is more about the Bucs on edge because they know the baggage that they drafted. Think the Titans are worried about needing to babysit their QB and top draft pick…..nope.

By the way, isn’t this guy paying some agent way too much to help guide him and where was he during all this? Dude, earn your money and help Crablegs out.

  49. It’s no coincidence he’s eating crab legs in that photo, he knew exactly what he was doing in posting that image. I’m not going to be overly dramatic and say this means he will be a bust, but I simply don’t understand why you would take the greatest day of your life and post a picture to remind everyone of a fairly shady incident from the past. Just makes no sense to me.

  50. Ok it WAS funny, but WAS bad judgment!

Love this quote hahaha – “Also, if you stand next to me, and a warm liquid begins to splash upon my leg, I can only assume it is raining. Someplace where the rain is yellow.” Signed crab for auction indeed – someone is pretty creative!

  51. Been racking my brain to figure out who this guy reminds me of….I finally got it. He’s another Dwight Howard. Everything is a joke..and no matter what..ands long as he’s having fun. .it’s all good..winning is just a side note.

Exactly! That’s the perfect way to sum it up.

  53. Now they can take Randy Gregory at the top of the 2nd and the implosion will be complete.

  54. good for the bucs to be on top of him. that is what he needs.

Browns take notes, this is how you take care of an infantile 1st round qb

  55. Photo caption:

” Hahaha. Look at me now. I was picked number one despite issues that people say I have. Numero uno haters!!

“See these crab legs? Get it? It’s about the time some guy “hooked me up” at Publix. I wasn’t stealing. It was all cool. I didn’t do anything wrong. Cute, huh?

“People said mean things about me but I’m having a good laugh now. Inyaface!!! Crab legs, bitchez!!”

  56. Jameis didn’t even have time to celebrate and screwed up already. BUST

If we can forgive a washed up former number 1 pick that went to prison for plea bargaining down to a RICO violation, when most of the civilized world comprehends he spent the better part of 6 years torturing animals in some of the most heinous ways possible instead of preparing to face his next weeks opponent. In 2 NFL spots, his lack of dedication & preparation was glaringly appalling after he received large contracts. If an individual like this deserves forgiveness for all sins as has been rammed down everyone’s throats, certainly BB deserves some of the forgiveness we dish out so quickly & reserve for others.

Personally I think Jailous is reprehensible and a huge mistake to take #1 overall. However, your sponge crab claws is freakin genius and funny as hell. Well-played!

  59. So the general manager for the Bucs basically put his job security in this guy’s hands? I don’t want to say risky…..what’s another word for risky?

  60. I agree it was bad judgment to attract more negative attention to himself; but come on people, all this drama over food??? It is over with so lets just choose over battles and quit holding this incident over the guy’s head.

  61. so he can’t even go a couple hours in the league without doing something moronic. this over privileged idiot is already off to the start everyone expected. his head is so far up his own behind that it will never come out.

I have a feeling the only reason Tampa Bay picked him was to drive up merchandise and ticket sales, which also leads to more concession sales as a result, relying on the FSU fan base to roll into Tampa and continue blindly supporting this criminal. Pure business move. Because he definitely doesn’t have the talent to last in the NFL. will get eaten alive by NFL defenses.

  62. The only reason I thought it was funny was because it was somebody else’s team.

If I was a bucks fan I would be all kinds of worried. This guy doesn’t seem to have two common-sense brain cells to rub together.

He seems to be the absolute opposite of Russell Wilson in every way.

    ……

Spot on. Now why can’t highly paid NFL personnel see it either?

  64. The “Buyer Beware” posts were already in play, here. Winston acknowledged “stealing” the crab-legs, and just recently exclaimed that “a friend” gifted them to him. What’s the straight story here, Winston. Now, this immature “kid” is going to go inside the T-Bucs locker room, expecting everyone, including seasoned veterans, to listen to his every word and follow his lead? I will bet you that by training camp, there will be fisticuffs in that locker room, brought on by this very immature behavior from this very immature “Famous Jameis”.

  65. Everyone who doesn’t think that is funny is a huge loser and should shut up. I love the fact Winston did that it was hilarious.

  66. I thought it was funny and stupid at the same time but I had another chuckle when you wrote:

“I’m torn on this one. I wrote last night that I thought it was funny (which it was, especially at the end of a long day). Florio, the lawyer in the room (also, the adult) pointed out the potential legal pitfalls of making such a joke.”

    Too funny.

  67. Goes to show you that some teams just don’t care about character when drafting. If they think it is all about winning, then they drafted the wrong guy. He will be out of the league in 4 yrs.

  68. Where was his agent, friend ,advisor or anyone that could ask him the question …”Jameis do you think that this is a good idea right now”? I was afraid something like this might happen! Didn’t think it would be so soon. I am also afraid TMZ will have to set up camp in Tampa to keep track of more of this kind of thing from him if someone is not assigned as a mentor soon!

  69. Sometimes I forget there’s only one way to view the world, through the cold grey prism of fear, hopelessness, and forced contrition. Always someone waiting for their feelings to be hurt, never a chance something could be viewed as fun or innocent, and people always trying to stir up controversies between groups of people, ready to point out differences rather than similarities.

    Congratulations, activists.

Taking down the crab pick doesn’t mean he regrets what he did, and doesn’t satisfy his critics.

  70. more of the same from Winston. I always get a kick out of these teams expecting players to become different than what they are. Winston is not suddenly going to become self aware. You either have that or you don’t. He just doesn’t get it.

  71. dude has bust written all over him. not because of his abilities rather because he is a complete moron and is bound to f up off the field.

  72. It’s a testament to the type of people he has surrounded himself with … and the future doesn’t look very bright.

What a moron, who is advising him?

  73. I swear this world does not allow people to have a sense of humor. It was silly. What, he isn’t allowed to have a picture with a woman because he was accused of rape?

Geez, people. This isn’t an incident, but a crack on something that all of his detracters are thinking. But the team overreacting to it is going to be his greatest hurdle.

I had a picture on my FB page that I showed to 10 people. 10 people thought it was funny, but two said, “That is not funny.” He needs to do a commercial spot for Publix and call it a day, but even then you stoic, humorless people would not cut him any slack.

  74. What was the over/under on how long it would take Winston to make the Bucs have regrets?

Did anyone pick less than 24 hours? If so, you are a winner!

  75. humor is allowed folks for those of you who say it isnt.
what shouldnt be allowed is this making a mockery out of being a thief and then laughing in the face of everyone in front of the entire world.
this guy is a first class dummy. look at his eyes when he starts to talk excited, they flicker. he cant control himself.
he almost lost it in an interview on tv last nite and the interviewer saved him from further stupidity in his remarks.
all that and he only threw 18 picks in the ACC which wasnt exactly a football powerhouse this past season.
the joke, well its on tampa, they will be the ones paying for this mistake. Jameis, will get paid.

  76. Man, the NFL has succeeded in making their fans haters of fun too. Not sure I have seen as much sanctimonious outrage outside of a church before. It was a joke, get the hell over it.

  77. Now all you people along with the author of this report might want to know the real story behind the photo, per Shawn King. Know the facts before jumping to conclusions.

  78. All this clown had to do was stage a photo op of him buying and serving crab at a local homeless shelter and SO much would be forgiven/forgotten. Admit that you were wrong instead of deflecting it to some minimum wage hourly worker at a grocery store. Own your mistakes. How tone deaf and just plain dumb do you have to be?

How has this guy’s dad not taught him this stuff by age 21?

  79. geez, back in the day, if you got the crabs, it wasn’t something you broadcasted.

    how times have changed

  80. so many days have passed and now with “Deflategate” maybe this will get delisted from popular votes today and we can move on.

  81. Just Curious if anyone else herd that Winston was trying to recruit La’El Collins… I did not know the 2 knew each other.
