Chip Kelly says no one has made an offer for Evan Mathis

The relationship between Evan Mathis and the Eagles hasn’t exactly been a smooth one, and coach Chip Kelly didn’t do anything Saturday to make it any better.

Kelly told reporters Saturday that the ball was in the veteran guard’s court in regards to returning to the team, as Mathis staying away from voluntary workouts.

“Evan Mathis has been available for trade for two years and there have been no offers,” Kelly said, via Dave Weinberg of the Atlantic City Press.

There were reports that Mathis’s name was floated as a possibility during the discussions about the Eagles obtaining Dion Jordan from the Dolphins before Jordan was suspended for the season. But apparently that doesn’t rise to the level of offer, in Kelly’s mind.

Mathis is due $5.5 million and $6 million in the final two years of his contract. And while he and Kelly might not agree to his monetary value, Mathis has continued to play at a high level, making it curious as to why Kelly is picking this particular fight.

  1. Baffling how no one has traded for him, he’s been consistently rated as a top5 guard by PFF

  2. I don’t see answering a question as picking a fight.. a question was asked and Chip answered.

  3. What fight is there between Matis and Kelly??….

    Please explain!!

There were rumors that Kelly was going to trade him but again.. those were speculations by writers and PFT and misinformed third parties including the supposed trade for Dion Jordan …..

This is what it has come down to people like CSN so called “Reporters” like Geoff Mosher making wild speculation and getting player upset ….. NOT anything from the Eagles organization confirmed a single one of these rumors.

So I will ask again….. WHAT FIGHT??

  4. He is trying to make Mathis realize that at his age, no one is going to give him a better salary than what he has on the books. I don’t think it is as contentious situation as you make it out to be. You even said he has continued to play at a high level, so it’s not like he is pulling a desean jackson or t.o and dogging it on the field. Him being unhappy with his pay rate makes him no different than hundreds of other players. He is staying away to avoid injury and getting cut while hoping for a new deal or trade. It doesn’t mean he dislikes Chip or the team pr organization. If anything, it’s that fraud Howie Roseman the pretend GM that he would be upset with. Wake me up when he is skipping mandatory work.

  5. Kelly isn’t picking a fight… Evan wants a new contract after he’s already being paid well at his position. Evan and his agent wanted the trade and the Eagles told him he and his agent are free to find a trade partner. That has not happened.

Please just stop acting like Kelly is picking battles with his players. Evan wanted the trade, if anyone “picked” this so called fight, it’s him.

  6. “…making it curious as to why Kelly is picking this particular fight.”

What’s curious is why the media feels the need to never mention the part of the story where Mathis has been asking for a new contract for the past 2 years. I don’t believe they have an issue with his current salary, they have an issue with extending a 32+ year old guard. I like Mathis and hope he stays, but I don’t blame the Eagles for not giving him a new contract when he already makes very good money.

  7. Not to mention Mathis was a bum before Philly picked him off the scrap heap.. Kind of makes me think his success could be partially from playing in between two absolute studs Peters and Kelce.

  8. Cue all the haters for looking for a story when there is no story. The Eagles resurrected his career from a backup to pro bowler.
Drew Rosenhaus is his agent. End of story. See T.O.or any other of his clients, who he often screws their careers in the long run for short term gains, Drew gets a cut with every new deal.

  9. It’s not baffling at all why teams aren’t trading for him. He has a contract that he wants and it must be pretty outrageous, because he’s very skilled yet nobody is knocking on the Eagles door to get him. He couldn’t find a trade partner last year. He’s another year older. Missed 9 games due to a knee injury. Nobody is going to give him the contract he wants.

Show up and play to the only contract you have being offered to you at the moment, or sit home and get fined 30,000 a day. Seems a bit counterproductive to me.

  10. If Kelly was a bad guy he would tell him he needs to sign a reduced contract for putting his employer through unnecessary media scrutiny .

  11. Many veteran players dislike Kelly because he doesn’t coddle and buddy-up to them. He’s changing the culture and weeding-out the malcontents. In 5 years EVERY organization in the NFL will be working like this (one, NE, already is). Players are interchangeable pieces – most, outside of franchise QB’s – are expendable.

Anytime someone comes along and radically changes the status quo they are attacked. What’s great is that Kelly doesn’t give a damn what anybody thinks – he just wins games. Once his transformation is complete he will have built a organization that will enjoy sustained excellence. He’s off to an impressive start – draft picks are all excited to play for him. They see it, get it. The vets that don’t – see ‘ya.

  12. There were reports that Mathis’s name was floated as a possibility during the discussions about the Eagles obtaining Dion Jordan from the Dolphins before Jordan was suspended for the season. But apparently that doesn’t rise to the level of offer, in Kelly’s mind.

Once again, chip kelly has done something wrong based on made up media reports …. Chip Kelly has done nothing but tell all you turds exactly what he is going to do and then has gone out and done it ….. yet you still don’t believe him … lol … Chip Kelly’s secret to Fooling the media ??? Just tell them the truth …

You are literally hating on a guy for not lying to you.

  13. I heard NE was in on him awhile back. But the house was too expensive, so they stayed in the car.

  14. I would say its easy. kelly wins bigtime this year or he gets run out of town and back to the college ranks. i certainly think its gonna be very interesting to watch.

  15. When a head coach openly states that a player “has been available for trade for two years and there have been no offers”, that’s a slap in that player’s face.

Yes, that’s “picking a fight” by intentionally embarrassing him. No way can a player give 100% to a coach who does that.

  16. Or the Jordan report was wrong just like the Mariota reports. Kelly said there were talks of a possible trade for Jordan at the combine but it never progressed to naming players compensation.

Why’s that so hard to understand. Have you never talked about buying something from someone but never got to the point of offering a certain $ figure for it? It happens all the time in the retail business.

  17. And how is kelly picking a fight? Mathis has been the 1 holding out and asking for trades. Kelly has been the one saying we want and expect Mathis to be here the last 2 years. Mathis made his desires for a new contract known Chip is now just responding to questions. Which is the results of making something public.
