Justin Smith: You’ll know in three weeks or so if I’m playing in 2015

AP

After making defensive lineman Arik Armstead their first-round pick on Thursday, 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said that the selection wasn’t made because of the uncertainty about Justin Smith’s status for 2015.

It was made because the 49ers know they are going to need to replace Smith’s production in the near future whatever he decides about this season. They should have an idea just how soon that need will arise in about a month.

Smith told Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee that “you’ll know in about three weeks or so” whether he’s going to return for a 15th and likely final NFL season. Barrows reports that Smith is working out regularly and looks good, although Smith cautioned not to read into that because he’d work out regularly even if he wasn’t returning.

Smith also said that he feels good physically, but added that “everybody feels good at this time of the year” so there’s probably not much to read into that as a hint either.

  1. 9er’s will beg him to stay and offer him all the reduced practice time he needs…dudes a beast.

    -Seahawks fan.

  2. Even without the new Alternate jerseys, that 49ers team is going to look way different this year. No more Frank Gore, no more stout run defense, no more crabtree, and the list goes on…

  3. 49ers are going to have to play 6 tough division games this year. I predict they come away with one against AZ.

But to comment on this article… I think he plays if they are good by week 8, if not then he’s out

Typical new Seattle fan. Hyde was going to replace Gore from the beginning. The run game will be just fine. The Niners were 8-8 without half of their defense. Bowman will be back, and was playing better than Willis. Borland was going to be a backup if Willis came back and now they will plug in Wilhoite and he’s a beast. I can’t believe you brought up Crabtree like he was doing anything. Crabtree had one good year and sucked after that. Torrey Smith is a better option than Crabtree. Plus we still have Boldin. You Seattle “fans” better start worrying about your little wonder boy Wilson not signing his contract, and he when/if he does,he’s going to hamstring your cap and I’m going to love it. Your window is closing, while the Niners got rid of pieces that can and did get replaced.

  5. Sea hasn’t had a good draft in 2 seasons…if this draft turns out anything like the previous two, it’ll be 3 seasons..with Wilson going for a huge pay day that window may just close..

I love how Niner fans dimiss their own teams’ problems but point out everyone elses.

Niners might win 7 games. Might.

  7. Spring 2015: “I’m playing but will be skipping all workouts and team activities.”
Week One: “Oh, I fell over. I’m done for the year.”
End of season: “I’m officially retiring.”
    ($4.25 million more in pocket)

  8. I sure hope he stays around for one more year. ‘Cowboy’ on his last legs is still better than 90% of the d-linemen in the league. I’m hoping he stays, the 9ers allow him to miss all offseason work, and then he can mentor Armstead and the other guys who haven’t seen much action on how the game and position should be played.

  9. Plug in all the pieces you want, they lost a top 3 coach. Sorry, but they will be lucky to hit 500, especially in that division.

  10. One of the best free agent signings in 49ers history. Consistent professional who had some incredible seasons for a 3 4 defensive end. The cowboy and Willis have made this team one of the best defensive units for nearly a decade. They came up just short of a super bowl. Going to be a new look 49ers this season, there’s no cupcake teams in this division, but hopefully their play won’t be as hideous as their new alternate jerseys.

Whatever makes you sleep better at night, bro. Hawks will win the division (again) and San Fran will miss the playoffs (again). Feel free to use the “bandwagon fans” rebuttal, I’m sure that’s one of your 3 straws you have left to pull.

  12. Only he knows for sure what’s in his heart/mind, but have to believe if he really wanted to retire, it would have happened already.
Most veterans know when it’s over, and announce it just before the end of the season or shortly thereafter. We just had a draft and went through a free agency signing period, which are other checkoff dates on the NFL calendar that have to be considered by all parties.
Seems to be positioning for a veteran-friendly return, which means not much of a training camp as a run-up to the season opener. And why not? He’s earned it. He can still play the run well.
He’s probably tired of the nagging injuries the last few years and is looking for a way to avoid it with less wear and tear, while still having a spot on the roster for one more season.
He has to be jazzed that Tomsula is the head coach. He’s the perfect guy to give JS a few “veteran considerations”. Several players last year thought Harbaugh’s practices were unnecessarily long and tough, and basically pointless when you look at the mediocre results (8-8 record).

  13. niners816, typical niner “fan”. If you think Hyde is going to be anywhere near as productive for anywhere near the length of time that Gore was, I’ve got some property on the moon to sell you. Frank Gore had two seasons where he didn’t run for more than 1000 yards. There’s no reason to think Hyde will be anywhere near that good. Sure, you can hope he does it. But it’s just a hope. And I only mentioned Crab because he’s been on the team for a while. Lots of longtime 49ers aren’t there anymore, hence my “new look” comment. Yes, the niners went 8-8 without half their defense and it looks to me like that’s probably where the niners will finish again.

A niner fan saying the Seattle window is closing is rich considering your window has already shut. The Seahawks have a proven record of finding value in late round picks and undrafted free agency. Yes, the new deals for our stars are going to come with a lot of cap casualties, but that goes without saying for any WINNING team. The Seahawks will make it through by keeping the roster young.

  14. Cracks me up how people are pulling the plug on the 9ers. They have ONE bad season (due to Roman’s ill-fated attempt to look like the Saints on offense) and the sky has fallen.

Their running back group might be the deepest in the league with Hyde, Bush, Hunter, Hayne and now Smith … and their Defense is stacked. Solid D-line, best LB unit in the league STILL with Smith, Bowman, Wilhoite, Lynch and Brooks at LB (they hinted at Ahmad Brooks moving inside at times as well) and pro-bowl Safeties … CB issues have been so over blown … 9ers have never used top CBs in their defensive scheme as they only put 7 in the box to pressure and stop the run.

As they proved in going to the Championship game 2 years in a row … if you combine power rushing with lights out Defense, you will usually win games.

That AND they have stated they want to “let Kaep be Kaep” instead of trying to turn him into Drew Brees. Simply more devastating options in the run game.

Talk all you want … if the 9ers simply go back to the offense that got them to the Super Bowl, they have a winning team. It ain’t rocket science.

  15. If we’ll know in three weeks then somebody make a note to call Senior Pornstashio because nobody will bother to tell him until September

  16. “You’ll know in three weeks…”
He shoulda just said, “sometime before the results of the deflate gate investigation .”
That way he’d have all summer to decide.

  17. I’m betting the ‘Cowboy’ has one more ride left in his saddle before he hangs up the spurs.

  18. No ones saying the 49ers may not have taken a step back. But you guys sleeping on the Niners, expecting them to just go away will be sorely mistaken. There’s a lot of talent and depth on this team and a very likely chance the play-calling/overall offense will be improved from the year prior. Even w/o JS: Tank/Dial, Dorsey, Jerrod-Eddie/Armstead, Lynch, Wilhoitte, Bowman and Aldon Smith is a way better than average front 7. While everyone laughing at the secondary, they still got: Brock (best corner on 2014 team), Johnson/Wright and some compete ready red-shirts along with probowl starting safeties. Point is, don’t sleep on the Niners, if you are, not doing enough research.

  19. Judging by all the new Warriors “fans” around the bay bringing up 50+ year old championships, I’m guessing the “faithful” have found a new sport to pretend to be passionate about.

Can’t knock Warriors fans, they were calling their home Roaracle since ’07

  21. Warrior fans suck. Sharks fans have been around for twenty years and don’t waive thunder sticks. J Smith come back for one more year. It will be a Super Bowl year for Niners with Kap MVP

  22. Never seen anyone in a pre 2010 warriors jersey. I’m fairly certain no one in the bay was aware they had an NBA team til they put the bay bridge their logo

  23. Seriously? Niners are donezito. They are probably the worst team in that div.
if the rams and cards get half decent qb play it won’t be close. 9ers window is closed, and yes many teams have it better then you

  24. Justin is great but this makes him not so. Let the team know now so the team that so coveted you can start preparing one way or another..

  25. If he comes back we could still have a top 10 defense. Be a bit of a challenge cause we lost coach fangio but the dline would be awesome. Like the best in the league awesome. We just got to stay healthy this year man jeez that killed us last year. I just got done watching film on Carlos Hyde man that got me excited Frankie G taught that boy to work.. a little anxious to see how we’re going to use this Tartt kid. He looks good too!

Come on cowboy one more ride!!!
