Spielman won’t say whether “commitment” will be made to Peterson

Getty Images

Contrary to whatever it was that Cris Carter was hinting about last week, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson wasn’t traded. And Peterson’s agent has acknowledged that a trade won’t happen — but that the Vikings should extend “a commitment to make him retire as a Viking.”

Appearing recently on PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio, Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman declined to comment on whether that commitment will be made.

“He is a player under contract,” Spielman said. “We never discuss with any of our players any financial consequences or anything financial with players’ contracts. We never discuss them publicly. That is kept internally, hopefully between the agent, the player, and ourselves, regardless of what the player is. There’s nothing I can tell you. All I can tell you at this point he is under contract with the Vikings. We intend to honor his contract in the ’15 season as we look forward to having him rejoin our team.”

Apart from whether a “commitment” will be made to Peterson, Spielman made it clear that he wants Peterson to remain with the team indefinitely.

“I think Adrian has done a lot for this organization,” Spielman said. “He made a mistake. He’s done a lot for this community. If we didn’t believe in Adrian Peterson, he wouldn’t be here. . . . He paid his consequences for that mistake and I think it’s time for everybody to just move on.”

The only remaining question is whether Peterson will show up for any portion of the offseason program, and whether he’ll appear for training camp. If he chooses not to play in 2015, he’ll owe the Vikings $2.4 million in previously-paid bonus money. If he plays, he’ll get $12.75 million.

If he shows up for the upcoming Organized Team Activities, he’ll get another $250,000 — making it an even $13 million for 2015.

  1. At this point, he’s their best QB and best defender. Gotta roll with him. Even though he does beat up people smarter than most Vikings fans.

    >

  2. If AP is holding out for more money and years with 3 years remaining on his deal, given the embarrassment he caused the Vikings and the NFL last year, earning ridiculously high numbers for a running back those 3 years… chutzpah

  3. Why in the world would We give him more money (or more ‘commitment’)? He’s already the highest paid RB, beat his kid, got paid to sit out 15 games last year and continues to show no remorse. If he really wants to be traded, then take a pay cut to 4M and we will be able to trade him for some value, otherwise shut up and play or retire!

  4. So tired of this agents act. Your client beat his kid, people got pissed, so just deal with it. Stop trying to act like this is your chance to feed daddy one more time off AP’s back.

  5. AD really turns it on in playoff games and deserves……Oh wait, that’s Marshawn Lynch.

  6. My Vikings really are the most embarrassing sports franchise in history, aren’t they??

  7. The Vikings are willing to pay this shlub 13 mil for one season? That’s not commitment enough? Where does Peterson get the stones big enough to keep jerking this franchise.

  8. The only way I will ever forgive AP is if he fired Dogra and publicly apologized for his actions and owns up to his mistake. Until then he can run the ball as #28 and score a touchdown as a Viking; I will never cheer for Adrian Peterson again.

  9. I love the offseason.

So much optimism from fans of teams that can’t hang with the packers.

The more, the better, I say. The tears taste so much better during the season.

  10. It’s hard to believe they didn’t make a commitment to Greg Hardy. That’s just the sort of people they are.

  11. Spielman was already dumb enough to overpay this child beater in the last 3 years of his contract. If he overpays him even more, he will go down as the dumbest GM in the NFL. But he would have a lot of company in Vikings history.

  13. My goodness there are a lot of Packer fans with fake “Viking fan” profiles. And the normal packer trolls who post right away on any Viking article.

arianil985. Give it up. If you wanted to pretend to be a Viking fan, don’t make a fake profile copying a real viking fan username.

  14. The only NFL Championship the Vikings have won is the most arrests in a 4 year time span. Maybe they should save the taxpayers and just lock up the entire team!

12/29/14: Vikings CB Jabari Price is arrested for DWI.
10/5/14: Vikings DT Tom Johnson is arrested for trespassing and disorderly conduct.
9/13/14: Vikings RB Adrian Peterson surrenders on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child.
1/1/14: Vikings LB Erin Henderson is arrested on suspicion of DUI.
11/9/13: Vikings WR Jerome Simpson is arrested for DUI.
11/25/13: Vikings CB A.J. Jefferson is arrested for domestic assault.
7/7/2012: Vikings RB Adrian Peterson is arrested for resisting arrest.
6/2/2012: Vikings FB Jerome Felton is arrested for DUI.
4/28/2012: Vikings RB Caleb King is arrested for assault.
12/30/2012: Vikings CB Benny Sapp is charged with fifth-degree assault and careless driving, both misdemeanors.
10/22/2012: Vikings CB Chris Cook is arrested for domestic assault.
1/31/2012: Vikings DE Everson Griffen is arrested for felony battery.
1/28/2012: Vikings DE Everson Griffen is arrested for public intoxication
9/20/2011: Vikings S Tyrell Johnson is arrested for suspicion of impaired driving.
8/7/2011: Vikings QB Rhett Bomar is arrested for DWI.

  15. Call it even, guarantee 50% of his contract for injury only and call it a day. No added money, no less money, no signing bonus. Whatever it takes for the Oompa loompa (Dogra) and the media to shut up already.

  16. This is the real reason AP doesn’t want to play in Minnesota and is trying to force his way out.

    Teddy Bridgewater
    2014 GP: 13 TD’s Pass: 14 INT: 12 TD Rush: 1 Playoff wins: 0
    Tim Tebow
    2011 GP: 14 TD’s Pass: 12 INT: 6 TD Rush: 6 Playoff Wins: 1

  17. Whoa. Anyone see this one on the blotter? Funny how it is a non-story.

4/17/15: Lions OL Rodney Austin is arrested for assault on a female, assault on a child under 12, interference with emergency communications, and misdemeanor larceny.

  18. This is so easy to predict, Peterson feels disrespected and doesn’t want to play for the Vikings. You can make all the arguments that he is the child abuser, he brought this on himself, he is under contract, doesn’t matter, he doesn’t want to be there.

The Vikings will find out that no matter his talent level, he is a locker room cancer and will force his way out by having a hissy fit in front of the media. But Speilman is afraid to do the right thing and just cut him now. So he will let this soap opera play out into a 2-6 start, cut him midseason.

Meanwhile, a 54 season will play out without a Viking’s Superbowl win and all the fans can blame AP and start their annual refrain; Wait till next year!

  19. “Whoa. Anyone see this one on the blotter? Funny how it is a non-story.”

Probably a non-story because unlike the Vikings, the Lions had the guts to do the right thing and immediately cut him.

  20. Classic, this guy abused a few of his kids.
Well, the ones he knew about anyway.
He bilked honest people out of their hard earned money with his shady charity foundation and now he wants a significant commitment/more money from the team he completely embarrassed last year.

And when the dust finally settles, the purple sheep will have no problem cheering wildly for this clown.

Sad and pathetic. So sad in fact, I don’t even feel like giving you a SkoLOL!!!

  21. AP neds to get over it. There’s nothing he or his agent can do about. Vike’s hold ALL th cards.

  22. lol, the media can’t stand to write its own story, because NOTHING has changed since Rick said the exact same comment weeks ago. Silence by everyone except a greedy agent.

  23. “AP neds to get over it. There’s nothing he or his agent can do about. Vike’s hold ALL th cards.”

Not really. AP’s nagging hamstring injury right before Week 1 holds all the cards.

  24. I don’t think this is AP trying to get more money. Dogra wasn’t his agent when he signed his contract. The agent doesn’t see a dime unless he gets him a new deal. This is Dogra trying to get himself a fat payday. I have a strong feeling AP will be firing this guy very soon. Much like Dogra’s former agency (and some players) did. AP has to be able to see this guy is hurting his image more than walking thru a playground with a branch is his had would.

  25. Jeez, some (not all) of these Packers fans spamming on here have no life.

It will be interesting how the chess game between Peterson’s agent and Vikings ends. If he plays for Vikes that’s not a good sign for the other teams in NFC North. Vikes look like they could have a big improvement and have a good year.

  26. The only reason this “committment” is coming up is because Dogra is trying to get paid one more time. He’s being greedy instead of thinking about what’s best for AD, which would be rehabilitating his image.

  27. “I don’t think this is AP trying to get more money. Dogra wasn’t his agent when he signed his contract. The agent doesn’t see a dime unless he gets him a new deal. ”

WRONG!! He was his agent who fleeced the Vikings on his new deal. Why are there so many fans who believe this fallacy?

  28. Adrian Peterson’s nickname “AD” — short for “All Day” — can now also stand for “All done,” as the Minnesota Vikings made their cornerstone running back the league’s highest-paid tailback with a seven-year deal worth a maximum $100 million, including $36 million guaranteed, according to the player’s agent, Ben Dogra. The deal comes the eve of Sunday’s season opener at San Diego.

  29. All of you taking shots at AP remember you have to give real info to get that screen name.. he might take
notice of a few of you throwing his Family and son around like rubbage, he might play a little Tap Dance on your head. Players read these too…
Hey Jimmy, I need to find out a buddies address,
here is his screen name, oh yea 10 grand for your time.
Now you big bad brave Guys, what you have to say now?

  30. AP will back to old times before the 12 minute mark of the 49ers game.. His agent needs to get a Public Caning like they give in Tailand…
He is an idiot and I’ll bet he is 99% of the 100% of the trouble….

  31. He’s a child beating scumbag and any one of you Viking fans that want him back should be ashamed of yourselves.

I get the part where you simply didn’t know what a scumbag he really is. It’s only when the facade starts to crumble with ANY of these guys that we learn the extent of their scumbaggery.

Heck, we had NO idea what a horrendous jackhole Favre really was/is until there was that one small leak… and then the floodgates were opened. Same with Tiger Woods. But now that you KNOW what a reprehensible wretch he is, supporting him in any way whatsoever is almost as deplorable.

You people are upper midwesterners. Act like it. Show the common decency and solid values you were raised with. You’re better than this.

  32. Vikes have handled this perfectly, while Dogra hasn’t come close. Nothing good comes from negotiating contracts in public — apparently unless you are a Packer fan and you then get the glorious opportunity to repeatedly comment on other NFCN teams’ PFT articles.

  33. more like JustAnotherVikingObsessedPackerFan.

you take the time to write down all arrests dating back to 2011, huh? wow, get a life dude.

If the vikings are this terrible, here’s a thought to all you cheesers obsessed with minnesota: stay on your own teams articles for once in your lives.

I agree with this 100 percent, but seeing him on a different team running for 1800 yards would be tough to watch.

  35. Stop this commitment talk, it is nonsense. Honor your contract AD and be quiet.

  36. Nothing like being afraid to commit to the cornerstone of the team.

Especially when it occurs only moments after commiting over 10 Million to your “franchise OT”

  37. From what I gather, Dogra hasn’t written any new paper for Peterson yet and if that’s the case then The Agent looks like his is angling for a payday with The Player before this whole sorry mess sorts itself out without The Agent getting a piece of the action. If Dogra can weasle a new contract for Peterson with the ol’ “put your money where your mouth is” bit, then he’s golden.
But I expect Dogra will soon find out that, just like Peterson, he has no clout in this matter. The Vikings will do what is best for the Vikings, Peterson will do what is best for Peterson and Dogra will remind us again exactly why he is a lousy agent.
In this scenario, Dogra sounds desperate. He knows the Vikings have all the cards.

  38. When, exactly, did a 30 year old running back with heavy mileage and a penchant for flailing children suddenly gain the upper hand in negotiations?

  39. The Vikings should have locked him out of the building. Who cares where he goes or if you get sued and have to pay him.
5 years from now after his agent and all of the lawyers are through he will be living in a trailer out in the desert anyway.

  40. The crime here, in the NFL’s eyes, is that AP wasn’t repentant enough. he didn’t come out in public and make long, tearful speeches about the errors of his ways.
It’s a strange culture we live in now. The discipline style of 50 years ago is now looked upon as child abuse by the politically correct and moral hypocrites.
I admittedly don’t know the full story behind what Peterson did but I do know that given the type of cretins now suiting up in the NFL, the man seems to be getting railroaded for not kissing enough…rings.

    ***************************************

You must have loved all those off seasons in the late 60’s into the early 90’s.

You’d think after 25 years of getting low numbered draft choices the Packers could have built an amazing team through the draft.

But no, it took a trade to get a QB and free agency to get their defensive leader, before they finally were able to score a TD in the playoffs of a full regulation season.

That stretch from after the 1972 season until the 1989 season that the team never managed to win more than 8 games in a year must have been a great time to be a Packer fan!

Even in 1989 when they won more than 8 games – they failed to make the playoffs. Of course the Vikings won the division that year.

It will take the Packers years to even have a chance to “hang” with the Vikings as far as success in the NFC North/Central is concerned.

Someone posted the other day that the Packers had won 8 out 13 NFC North Championships – trying to exert the dominance of the Packers and disregard the NFC Central records.

Well earth to all Packer fans – the NFC Central was comprised of the Bear, Lions, Packers and Vikings – just like the NFC North. The only difference was the Buccaneers were a member for some of the years.

Why are Packer fans afraid of the Buccaneers?

If I were to cherry pick 13 seasons out of the history of the NFC North/Central – I could say the Vikings won 11 of 13 years.

The only way the Packers can get to 11 out of 13 at this time is to win the next 7 in a row…

    I don’t see that happening.

  42. Spielman and the whole org is backed into a corner.

Son at game: “Gee Dad, why are you cheering for someone who beat their four-year-old kid to the point where he bleed and all he did was push another half-brother?”

Father at game: “Because winning a game is more important than any other meaningless thing in my life, son.”

  43. Seriously? Packer fans needs to find better things to do. Why don’t you read your own teams stories and comment on those. I like the Vikings so I read those stories and comment on them. I don’t like the Packers so I don’t read the stories and comment on them.

The Vikings did the right thing by not letting him leave town for anything short of a team ransom. Yes, he is over paid, yes he is old, but he still is the best RB in football till proven otherwise. Yes, he hasn’t been as successful, as Lynch and other backs in the post season, but does a RB win every game, for the team, no. It’s a team effort and the Vikings have been rebuilding since 2009. That’s not AP’s fault, and he’s half the reason any Viking fan has tuned in these past couple hard seasons.

Peterson committed a crime so why reward him by letting him leave town when he is under contract? Also, the Vikings would be soo stupid to not see what they still have in AP after paying him 8-9 million to sit at home last year. He may not be as good as he was. That’s the same as any player in the NFL, players get hot, and cold. But keeping him and seeing what you have is better than letting him go for nothing and let another team win a Superbowl with him. Yes, he’s a scum bag, but the league is full them. But you watch because of football, not becaue of them being role models.

I think the Vikings played it exactly right. I thought they were going to just give him away for nothing. They proved me wrong. All you Packer haters, why don’t you just love your team, and leave us alone.

  44. Yeah, sorry, GTO. But you DO cherry pick seasons all the time. You also seem to think that scoring a TD in the playoffs is more important than, say, winning a Super Bowl.

    But that’s ok.

The world knows what is more important, and they also know that the Packers are the most storied franchise in the sport, while the Vikings are constantly laughed at.

  45. We need to dump AP and move on from this mess. He’s old and washed up by now anyways. I am planning on burning my 28 jersey. I can’t in good conscience wear it around my 4 year old son.

Why do we always have so many damn criminals on our squad?

  46. Perhaps Peterson would be better served if HE showed a commitment to the Vikings? After all, they already paid him $9M last year to rest his body. That was his “guaranteed” money.

Nope, Packer fans are surprised at any positive news, not weeping. The Vikings organization offers nothing we want. We don’t care about your team aside from the fact that you are a division rival. There is no jealousy, no fear and hardly a thought at all of your team. When we post on Vikings articles it is in retaliation to your people posting trash on our stories.

Hopefully you can get over .500 this year to make it interesting but I am not hopeful. You see, I actually like when both the Packers and the Vikings are competitive. The first game at Lambeau last year was embarrassing. Please field a team this year that can give us a game at Lambeau, and that stomping clearly led to us playing down to your level at TCF in yet another win for the Packers, playing down to your level does not help us when we play good teams.

  49. Spielman should trade him for whatever he can get and move on.

And the Vikings would do the right thing and do an AP jersey buy back. I bought an official jersey for my son for $90 and have to explain to him why he can’t wear it.

You realize we played our 3rd string quarterback that first game against you guys right? I agree is was embarrassing but again, so was drafting Ponder. I’ll admit that all day.

And you can’t tell me that the Packers “stooped” to our level to play. That’s absurd. There would be no reason to do this.

We had our starting quarterback, and we gave you guys a run for your money. Plain and simple.

I agree that I’d like to see us give the Packers some competition. Nothing better that rival football games. Honestly, I think the Vikings will take 2nd in the NFC north this year only trailing the Packers by 2-3 games.

This isn’t AP trying to get more money, it is Dogr trying to get a new deal…any new deal…because he gets the agent commission on a new deal. He gets nothing for APs current deal. He’s probably filling APs head with all sorts of nonsense about how a new deal will be so much better for him, but this is all about Dogra getting HIS paycheck. No wonder the NFLPA wants to bring Dogra in for a talk.

  55. I am rather excited about this.

Peterson will get his yardage in garbage time killing the clock in the 2nd half when the vikings are down by at least 21 points.

He would be the perfect fantasy football back if he could score touchdowns. He never has to make a winning play or win games.

With Peterson back, the Vikes can get back to winning 3-5 games this season!!

I don’t think I see anyone feeling sorry for Peterson at all. Not sure where you get that from. Most Viking fans are pissed at the guy but believe he deserves a second chance just like every other player that has committed a crime. Trust me, every team has had their share of criminals for much worse and much less of crimes.

What he did was wrong and honestly I as a Viking fan do not forgive him. I wouldn’t care less if he plays another down in the NFL. However, at the current time he has been reinstated, he is still on the Viking roster. So unfortunately I have to hope he does well. Do I feel sorry for him? Not in the least. Do I think the Commissioner treated him badly? Yes I do. Not because his intent was wrong. It was absolutely on track. However, you cannot treat players differently just to make a point and make rules up as you go. That is what Goodell did. He should have been reinstated just as Rice was when the judge ruled he couldn’t be suspended anymore. But Goodell played GOD and did what he wanted to do. Not because it was policy which if it were then it would have been just fine. But ONLY because he could.

But fans like you that try to berate Viking fans for APs and Goodell’s wrong-doing are nothing but trolls that talk crap on their keyboards. Get a life!

Ben Dogra had a LONG meeting with the NFLPA yesterday. He’s being investigated for various potential violations of the regulations governing contract advisors. There hasn’t been a whole lot of information as to what those violations are, or if they have anything to do with his being fired from CAA, but if any one of them has anything to do with him being a gigantic jackass, like the cheesehead trolls on this board, he violated that rule a LONG TIME ago.
