Dolphins send former LSU teammates to recruit La’el Collins

AP

Three players on the Dolphins were teammates of La’el Collins at LSU, and they’re being pressed into service to try to recruit him to come to Miami.

Collins, a first-round talent who went undrafted after police said they wanted to question him in connection with the death of his ex-girlfriend, will be the most sought-after undrafted free agent in history if he is exonerated of the crime. Police have said he is not a suspect.

For the Dolphins, the effort to bring Collins into the fold has taken on the feel of a college recruiting visit. According to FOX 8 in New Orleans, not only is Dolphins coach Joe Philbin traveling to see Collins, but so are former LSU teammates Jarvis Landry, Anthony Johnson and Kelvin Sheppard.

NFL teams are limited in the financial offers they can make to undrafted rookies, which means there’s no way for Collins to make the kind of money on his rookie contract that he would have made as a first-round pick. But several teams are expected to offer Collins as much as the Collective Bargaining Agreement allows them to offer undrafted rookies, and so Collins will have multiple contracts to choose from, assuming he is exonerated.

As he chooses among those multiple offers, it may be a simple matter of Collins wanting to go to the team that feels the most like home. And the Dolphins are trying to make him feel like he’ll be comfortable in Miami.

  1. Shouldn’t they wait till he’s cleared of charges first? They’re going to look very bad if he’s not.

  2. If he wants to go to the worst team in that division then by all means sign with Miami. I’m guessing he wants to win so he’ll most likely sign with a NFC team.

  3. You think there will be any “if suspected or arrested of a crime, this contract will be null and void with the team possessing no further financial obligation to the player” verbiage in the contract?

  4. If he is guilty he should burn. if not he will be the steal of this years UFAs.

Except the winningest team over the last 15 years and reigning SB Champs are in the AFC

  6. Don’t listen to Kelvin Sheppard or you will turn out to be a bust just like him. Has to be the biggest steal in NFL history…. Kelvin Sheppard for Jerry Hughes….we robbed the Colts blind on that one. If he is smart, he will come to Buffalo, we are building a winner!! Go Bills.

  7. I guess Joe Philbin is throwing his “high character guys” ideals out the window with his head on the perverbial chopping block this season. This would be a great pick up for the Dolphins. Hope he’s cleared and can sign with Miami!

  8. The Bears should do that with…Ego Ferguson?

Like I said in a post about a week ago, Collins should definitely sue somebody and/or keep fighting to be put into the supplemental draft. It’s very easy for these fat commenters sitting on their couch to tell him to just suck it up and prove himself – yeah, it’s easy because all they’ve been doing for the last 4 years is eating cheetos and watching TV. This guy has been working hard at his craft, at his livelihood, and now he is getting robbed of millions of dollars he had coming to him.

  9. Every team is going to offer Collins the maximum allowed under the CBA if he’s cleared and fully exonerated, so money is not going to be an issue, except to the extent a team appears to be in, or headed to salary cap hell, which would make a top restructured offer in two years less likely.

The next most important factors is which team can offer him the greatest likelihood of a starting position, which teams have the best coaching staffs at his position, have quality and continuity in the franchise, and are likely to be more successful.

Looking at all that, I don’t think Miami is the most likely destination for Collins if he’s exonerated.

  10. If La’El wants to keep a low profile, go to Buffalo. Anything else even mentioning debates or problems will probably shave half his earnings off. The guy is inline for $200 M, so do the math.

P.S. Miami is a hot mess with a coach that won’t be there soon, Buffalo has one of the NFL’s richest new owners & in her late 30’s. Tell me who’s going to be in place longer?

  11. Yes the Patriots are the most “winningest” team and they are the defending champs. But they have no defense and spygate and deflate gate will never go away brotha!!!

  12. If they want him so badly, why didn’t they use a 7th round pick on the guy?
    /////////////////////////////////////////////

He would of immediately despised any team that took him in day 3 considering the contract restraints.

  13. First thing this young man should do is give his agent the boot. Yes the kid got screwed BIGTIME but it did not help him having his agent mouth off to NFL teams during the draft. Got a feeling this kid is going to stay as close to home as possible. Whoever signs him is getting the best UDFA since Kurt Warner. He has to go where he can play tackle and play now in order to cash in on that player performance money and that’s not Dallas. He also has to go where HE wants to go, not where his pinhead agent directs him.

  14. Actually, given the lack of state tax….signing in Miami makes sense. Their offer will by definition net him 10% more take home pay than most other teams. That said, risking injury for undrafted FA money might not the worth the risk.

  15. If you add Collins (projected 1st round) with Parker and consider Stills was traded for our 3rd round pick, add to that Ajayi to that, its is a hugely successful draft.

  16. lightninhopkins says: May 5, 2015 1:05 PM

They probably should not send Philbin, that might actually drive him away.

    ——————————————————-
    Beat me to it.

But seriously, this is a smart move by Miami, and they probably have a good chance to sign him. Close to Louisiana, excellent weather, gets to hang out with Jarvis Landry. Who can beat that?

  17. To answer above question (s):

1: They didn’t use a 7th on him because under the rules, he would be allowed to enter next he years draft. Thus, a wasted pick. Not picked means no draft ever again = permo UDFA.

2: He hadn’t talked to the police. For all anyone knew, he could have been fleeing La from Chicago, not returning to La.

3: Everyone was in cahoots. I guarantee teams were ‘encouraged’ not to draft him by The League.

  18. Tannenbaum used to work for the agency that represents Collins, that will probably be a factor. No state sales taxes helps a guy that just lost millions of dollars. Finite chance of starting at guard and with Brandon Albert’s injury history a very good chance at getting reps at LT also. Good fit.

  19. Someone tell me who he could sue? Maybe the person who killed his ex and the baby (if it wasn’t him). I’m sure that would help recover the lost money. Sure it would. But other than that who would he sue? The police? Lol. For doing their job? Ok. The teams or nfl? Under what cause? After the blank that went on with rice Peterson Hernandez etc they weren’t going to touch him until at least he talked to the police. It is amazing to me that people keep throwing the “sue” word out there.

  20. The CBA limits the total amount teams can spend on rookie free agent bonuses to something like $86K. The teams that are trying to get Collins will have to hold out a big portion of that pool and are losing out on other rookie free agents that are signing elsewhere. Some of those guys turn out to be okay, so if you don’t get Collins you’re really putting your team at a disadvantage.

  21. Wait…Collins was at LSU 4 years ago when Sheppard left?

That said, every team in the NFL has former LSU players. If he wants to talk to a star from the school, Buffalo has Kyle Williams.

In the end, Buffalo is a lower profile city in terms of media with a more player friendly coach in Rex Ryan.

  22. Time for Roger to step up and let this young man into the supplemental draft.

  23. Yeah I’d sign with a Florida or Texas team for the income tax savings. He needs to make up every penny that he lost IF he’s cleared.

  24. The Dolphins are South Florida’s version of the Factory of Sadness. Collins will never sign with these clowns.

  25. No state income taxes in FL. He’d actually make more money there. The Fins are weak at the G position and he’d start from day 1.

  26. The likelyhood of a 7th round pick making the team is very unlikely. How some team didn’t spend a pick on him blows my mind. What’s the worst that happens? He gets convicted and you have to cut him?

  27. Miami & Buffalo can offer the same amount per the CBA. However, the state of Florida has no state income tax. I’m sure many other teams will offer contracts as well. He’d be wise to choose a team in a state with no income tax.

  28. Heard his best friend plays for Carolina, he should go there, they need him and his bro can help him acclimate.

  29. Another reason Miami did not use a 7th round pick on him is that they didn’t have one… Their last pick was in round 5. Larger difference between using a 5th and a 7th on a player.
Another thing to remember is that he was never a suspect.

  30. Why did the NFL deny his request to bail on the draft due to his circumstances and enter the supplemental draft? Seems like it made sense to me, some team would have used at least a second, probably a first to get him IF he’s cleared.

  31. I don’t think you can blame his agent. Not that he handled it well at all. He obviously didn’t understand the rules of the Draft as it relates to rookies, but this is an unprecedented situation.

Nothing his agent or lawyer said or did would have changed the outcome. No team was going to draft a player with this hanging over him, not even as a 7th round flier pick.

I don’t think any agent would have been prepared for this happening. And neither was any team, which is why he wasn’t getting drafted.

  32. If I’m him.. I tell these teams where the line starts.. I ask them each why they passed on me… What they see me doing in terms of position Guard or Tackle… And I make the coach take a Test.. Because none of these guys would touch him with a ten foot pole.. Cost him millions and now they are taking him to dinner and sending minions… I would throw up if I was him…

  33. Rex had the first shot and any good salesman know once the prospective client leaves odds of them coming back are slim at best.

  34. He should sign with the Patriots. Each Patriot made 92,000 for winning ANOTHER one.

  35. > Why did the NFL deny his request to bail on the draft due to his circumstances and enter the supplemental draft?

Because the CBA has language in it which very explicitly disallows that scenario. The league didn’t approve that request because they don’t have the authority to unilaterally breach the CBA. To make something like that happen, the NFLPA would have to sanction it as well.

  40. Hey remember innocent until proven guilty? Or does that only apply to females in these days of “equality”?

The police have not named him as a suspect but of course police need to question her ex partners and of course he is a potential suspect but so are her parents at this stage of the investigation, everyone is!

It is not like Miami was not interested before the draft. Every team wants him assuming he is innocent so I see this as a smart play and so does every other coach, owner, GM,…

  41. No one will draft him before he’s exonerated but they trip over themselves to recruit and sign him before he’s exonerated? The NFL is so stupid.

  42. Collins took out an insurance policy that will pay him north of $5mil in the event that he gets injured and can’t continue his career. Very smart move and gives him a little flexibility with choosing his first NFL team and first contract.

  43. If you are drafted on day 3 of draft you can refuse so sign and re enter the draft the next season. His agent made that known he would do that so no one took him in the later rounds.

And… Its cheaper to live in Detroit, Cleveland Kansas etc but we are talking Miami and Buffalo. No state tax which means get paid more and since these guys are young, they can buy a home on the beach, live near the beach, afford the luxury life. Or they can live in Buffalo, go camping, freeze their asse$ off, go to the state fairs etc.. Your Hero Jim Kelly dreaded Buffalo, played for who again in Houston for 3 years?

  49. Barfallo, what a QB less dump. A dump you hVe to pay FederL, State and local tax to live in. AKA NFL player hell. The best thing that could ever happen to Barfallo would be that Toronto annexed it and made it the city landfill. And New York is a great place to play if you wanna play for a rookie head coach who couldn’t get Miami to promote him past a d-line coach. Miami a dumpster fire..? Riiiiight, just try keeping Brandon Marshall from stabbing himself and doing too many public service announcements for beating his old lady to train for the season

  50. get that playoff money….

    Last Dolphin’s playoff win: 2000

Patriots playoff games won since 2000: 21

Number of NFL franchises who have won fewer playoff games since the AFL-NFL merger than Tom Brady has: 27

  51. He will sign with the Saints. They have a real offense with a hof quarterback and void at LG. Buffalo’s and Miami’s desperate attempts to court him is quite laughable.

  52. The Seahawks can offer a starting job at LG, an extra $168,000 in playoff bonus money and a Super Bowl ring in your first year. You will not see that in Miami or Buffalo.

  53. As an NFC fan, I’m kinda tired of seeing the Patriots win everything over there year after year…decade after….well you get it. I say more power to the Dolphins. Let’s see some fresh teams in the playoffs.

  54. He should just sign a 1 year deal with a team which will promise in writing to make him paid his first 4 years as if he was the top pick of round 2. He’d get rookie minimum, maybe a small signing bonus but should be looking for a team where he’d be an instant starter. That will get him more pay for performance money and strengthen his hand as an ERFA after season 1. Once the rookie pool limits no longer apply, he can sign a deal in 2016 that makes up the money he missed by falling out of the draft.

By choosing his team well and showing belief in himself, he’ll get paid and be eligible for free agency after 4 years.

  55. As for the deep pockets of owners:
    Pegula – $3.8 billion < Ross – $6.5 billion

Avg temp for Miami in November is 82, in Buffalo its 56

Consumer Prices are lower in Buffalo
    – because you can travel to Canada to buy things cheaper
Rent Prices in Buffalo are lower in Buffalo
    – because it doesn’t cost as much to carve your home out of ice
Restaurant Prices are lower in Buffalo
    – because really… How much do wings really cost to make????

Would really pass up eating steak on South Beach with celebrities and bikini clad models when you can eat the same steak watching water freeze right before your eyes and people bundled up like the Michelin Man?

Buffalo is making good moves with its owner, but La’el is bayou bou – loves the heat of the South and the only ice he wants to play with is the watch on his wrist and the cubes in his drink.

  56. This kid gets cleared in the murder case and someone is going to get a helluva bargain regardless of what team he goes too!! Not sure if Miami would be the ideal spot for him to land though.

Sure Miami has a need on the OL but do they still have the same OL coach that was there during the Richie Incognito/
Jonathan Martin debacle!? With Pouncey being a former
“Gator” and Collins a former “Tiger”, that offensive line film room could be ugly! 🙂 haha

  57. All the Buffalo haters…our city is so bad and dirty…yet i don’t see any rafts floating over from Cuba?

Lebron is in Cleveland for a reason your city is overrated.

Oh and for the guys who were confused on the numbers the state tax is a wash after you pay for that rent on a “ocean view” apartment in the ghetto.

  58. another confused one

Consumer Prices are lower in Buffalo
    – because you can travel to Canada to buy things cheaper

Canadians come to Buffalo for shopping.

  59. It’s really enjoyable seeing the absolute fear from all over that somehow the Patriots might get their hands on him.

  60. Wow, with so many geniuses here I find it hard to believe we don’t have a cure for cancer. People here knows everything from the salary cap, to the state of Miami’s coaches, to what Collins is looking for. I follow Miami as much as anyone and even I don’t what Miami salary cap situation will be in a couple of years or what the coaching situation will be after this coming year or what Collins is looking for. Amazing how many people talk out of their butt.

  61. @Buddysguy. Being in Miami >>>> Buffalo in so many ways: women, weather, nightlife, culture, beaches, etc.

  62. So Miami sending their garbage players to entice a good player to sign with them? Didn’t Sheppard get traded to Indy from Buffalo for Jerry Hughes?

  63. La’el Collin s needs to come to the Panthers to learn under 2 of the best O-line coaches in the league John Matsko and Ray Brown.

Besides he played with Trai Turner who is other O-lineman. The continuity Is already there.

Then he can get support by the best locker room in the NFL with back to back Walter Payton award winners in Thomas Davis and Charles Tillman.

Then Collins will get to block for Cam Newton, Jonathan Stewart, Mike Tolbert, Fozzy Whitaker and Cameron Artis-Payne.

  64. Buffalo, lmao, yea lets shovel 9ft of snow instead of sitting poolside, buffalo has a shot………not.

  65. As for Lebron.. He came, won championships and went home.. Never to win another one again. Not sure what your point is Buddy? Are you saying Cleveland is better than Miami? HAHA

  66. Garbage player? Landry was tied with OBJ for ROTY. ODB said himself he would have voted for Landry.

NEW BILLION DOLLAR STADIUM, Block for AP and Bridgewater, Starting LG spot, and most important when your 2 years are up and you can get a new deal the Vikings GM Rick Spielman PAYS Oline if they perform well just ask Loadholt who got a 3 yr $25 million contract extension with $7 million guaranteed in 2013, Sullivan Who had 2 years left at $4.65 million got a year added and a raise this year and next year going from $4.65 to $7 million and from $4.65 next year to $5.5 million that year and the following year, then last but not least Fusco who got a 5 year $25 million extension with $6 million guaranteed. Also just used 5th year option on Kalil paying him $11 million next year if they don’t work out a new deal.

Come to Minnnesota and block for the Best Running Back in the NFL and the Best young QB in Bridgewater

  73. Small salary, and must sign a 3 year deal (per the CBA). If he’s fully cleared, he should sit a year, take some extra classes (or graduate, if he hasn’t done so already), and come back next year. He’ll probably fall to the 2nd no playing the year, but will probably make much more in the long run

  74. I love how people who don’t understand what’s going on keep commenting on the issue. HE CANT RE-ENTER THE DRAFT!!!! He either signs with a team as a UDFA or simply doesn’t play in the NFL.
