Patriots treated as repeat offenders, thanks to Spygate

AP

The NFL’s harsh punishment of the Patriots for Deflategate was motivated in part by the team’s prior offense in Spygate.

The league’s statement on Deflategate discipline makes clear that the decision to strip the Patriots of a first-round draft pick next year and a fourth-round draft pick in 2017 in addition to imposing a $1 million fine was motivated in part by Spygate.

“Here, there are several factors that merit strong consideration in assessing discipline,” the league’s statement says. “The first is the club’s prior record. In 2007 the club and several individuals were sanctioned for videotaping signals of opposing defensive coaches in violation of the Constitution and Bylaws. Under the Integrity of the Game Policy, this prior violation of competitive rules was properly considered in determining the discipline in this case.”

Although Patriots coach Bill Belichick was exonerated of any wrongdoing on Deflategate, his actions in Spygate are costing the Patriots again. That prior violation counts against the team this time.

  1. They were first time offenders back in 2007, so why the loss of the 1st round pick then?

It’s ridiculous and it was 8 years ago. The Falcons literally piped in fake crowd noise for two season and only lost a 5th round pick.

  2. Once a cheater, always a cheater. Or put another way, “it is more probable than not that a cheater will cheat again when given the opportunity.”

The real problem was that the punishment for Spygate was not harsh enough to deter future cheating by the two-time World Cheaters, so here we are now.

  3. Treated as repeat offenders.

    THEY ARE REPEAT OFFENDERS.

Forever in the record books, the most corrupt, cheating organization of the modern era.

“We’re on the the next scam to cheat.”

  4. The Pats just can’t help themselves; it’s in their organizational DNA. Might as well ask a dog not to lick himself down there…

  5. They should have been docked and entire draft class and Brady should be suspended indefinitely. Pete Rose is still banned for damaging the integrity of the game, what Brady did was just as bad.

  6. It’s about time they lost a first rounder over their cheating habits. This MIGHT cause them to think twice about cheating going forward.

  7. No, they were not treated as repeat offenders. The penalty would have been much worse.

They have tried to make a mockery of the SHIELD by circumventing the rules. They live in a culture of lies and deceit.

  8. HOF cheating coach … HOF cheating QB. Linked forever in slime. The Patriot way. Disgusting.

  9. 4 games for Brady? Fine. I guess we couldn’t expect much more. $1 million fine, loss of a first round and a fourth round pick? Fine. I guess we couldn’t expect much more than that. But not to suspend Belichick for one full year when I believe that there is zero doubt he was aware of what was going on? Inexcusable.

  10. Yesterday 32 franchises hated Goodell. Now 31 love him. It’s unfortunate others cannot see his image reclamation project.

    The sheep says, BAAAAA
    .

  11. F.U. N.F.L.!!

In the very off-chance that this farce holds up….which it won’t, Jimmy Boston will do just fine!
Tom will come back pissed, and off we go to yet another Superbowl.
    Can’t stop the Pats.
    Roger is a weasel.
    Wells is a weasel.

The Patriots aren’t scared of this silly punishment. They will band together and fight harder.

  12. If Brady would have admitted he was part of this, he still would have got 4 games but I think the fine against the team and the draft picks lost would have been a lot less.

  13. Didn’t even Suh get a clean slate after 32 games? How can the NFL reach back into the last decade when there hasn’t been a sniff of trouble for over 120 games.

  14. No one has even mentioned why the Patriot team doctors didn’t remove Edelman from the SuperBowl after Chancellor blew him up and he was clearly concussed. Cliff Avril got a concussion and the Seattle doctors pulled him right out. Edelman went on to torch an injured Seahawks secondary which was compounded by a reduced pass rush on Brady with Avril out. The NFL after the SB said that Edelman should have been removed from the game. You can’t tell me the Pats didn’t know he had a concussion. Freaking pathetic.

  15. That makes no sense. Are the PATRIOTS the offenders or is TOM BRADY the offender? If it’s Brady, then it’s a first-time offense.

Goodell is making it up as he goes, just as he did with Roethlisberger. Ben was a first-time offender suspended six games without ever being arrested or charged. And Goodell said in his suspension letter the NFL investigation found nothing to contradict the police finding of no probable cause that a crime had occurred.

Goodell is doing what he always does: appeasing the public regardless of the evidence. Never mind that Aaron Rodgers admitted to tampering with balls, too. The public wants Brady’s head on a platter, so Goodell will give it to them.

  16. Patriots are not repeat offenders, they are repeat repeat repeat offenders. In the 2004 Afc championship game, the patriots stole signals from the steelers defense which allowed Brady to audible out to better plays. He even knew the audibles that the steelers defense was calling.

Nice! Packers just moved up one spot for 2016 draft.
    _____

You’re obviously talking about their second-round pick.

  18. Mr Teflon man strikes again. If these guys deserve this then I would like to ask, What has been given to the NFL staffers who allowed this to occur? Was not the league warned before this particular game that the Ravens thought the balls were being tampered with? Did that not flicker a light in somebody in the league office that there was an issue here? And assuming so why were steps not taken? The NFL is the biggest culprit here. Can anybody imagine the MLB pitchers given access to scuff up the baseballs to their liking without final approval before each ball is put into play? What a crock and I hate the Pats but it still is a crock. Goodell ( Mr Teflon and his staff) need to be held accountable.

  19. When will you people make up your minds? In 2008 it was “the proof that the pats cheating is a big deal is the huge price they are paying in penalties”. In 2015 it’s “spygate was a slap on the wrist”. Which is it. Slap on the wrist or evidence of how egregious it was.

But just like spygate, everyone is wrong in their assessment. The NFL basically said, we aren’t penalizing Brady/patriots for deflating footballs, the penalty is for lack of cooperation. But all of you are going to misquote the penalty for the next 20 years. We are gonna hear “the patriots were penalized for deflating footballs…” Even though it’s not true.

  20. They are Goodell’s darlings & nothing else will ever be said about it!!! Tom will only serve a 2 game suspension!!! We all can only hope that he retires with his old lady to prevent a new scandal!!!

  21. Consider it a handicap so the rest of the NFL has a chance.

Just didn’t want to allow Brady to eviscerate the Colts again and again The squeaky wheel….

    That one, too.

  23. Come on Godell what about Belichick, didn’t you tell Sean Payton the ignorance of the pay to injure program was not a suitable defense. And you believe Belicheat did not know?

So explain why the guy called the Deflator took the bag of balls from the refs locker room to a restroom without authorization, then lied about it four times. And explain why Brady claimed he didn’t know the Deflator’s name when we see text messages they sent back and forth?

  25. Whatever. The NFL league office is in damage control. They buggered this situation from moment one. Now, they are scrambling to cover their backside. When The Patriots endured the insult in 2007 for taping 7 plays, they responded by winning the next 17 games and lost the Super Bowl on a miracle catch.

Patriots Haters should watch out for what they wish for… And consider the hornets nest to be officially kicked.

19 and 0: Here we come, and Don Shula can slurp a bowl of rotten eggs.

    Go Patriots!

  26. This is such an outrage. Goodell needs to resign NOW. I hope the Patriots fight this tooth and nail. I hope Brady and Kraft both sue the league as they should. I think Patriots fans should boycott the 1st game next season to express their displeasure with the NFL front office.

Punishing Brady like this when all the evidence against him is CIRCUMSTANTIAL?? Taking away draft picks to hurt the whole team when it was 2 employees that did the wrong thing? Goodell must be on crack cocaine. Or perhaps he took some stupid pills. To treat this like football’s 9/11 as Bill Maher called it, is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen, especially when EVERY QB in the NFL scoffs up footballs, as Aaron Rodgers freely admitted.

The NFL had it out for the Patriots from Day 1 and was pre-disposed to find them guilty. John Harbaugh clearly was in cahoots with the NFL front office and Chuck Pagano to go after them. I’d love to wipe that sick smile off John Harbaugh today.

  27. Brady already announced appeal! Pats fan or not, let’s hope this mess further embarrasses the NFL and the owners wake up that Fuhrer Goodell must go!

  28. Sad. This would be easier to swallow if there was evidence. If the wells report was impartial. If they had tested the balls after they went missing.

I actually get it now. The Pats get railroaded for meaningless rules. Someone has to be the bad guy.

  29. Should have banned the owner from the stadium for a year. Suspended Bellichick for a year for repeat offender status, and Brady for 8 games including preseason. Loss of first three round picks in 2016. That would instill public confidence in the commitment to the integrity of the game.

  30. It was more for lack of cooperation than the crime. But I’m happy. No room for an arrogant cheater. Can’t wait till he retires and the Pats will suck for a long time. He should be banned from the HOF.

  31. Look at all the haters. You hate us cause you ain’t us and that defending Super Bowl Champs. Last time I checked we beat on of the great teams of this generation the PEDHawks with the most properly inflated balls in NFL History.

Keep on hating you just did is a a favor by keeping Brady and Co. motivated….watch out Indy only fitting Brady’s first game back starts with the Colts.

  32. I keep thinking about that stormy/snowy night back in 2002. The night the Patriots & Brady believed they were impervious to rules. Believe me when I tell you, Al Davis is running the NFL from above (or below) and he’s making amends for that Tuck Rule that made a 6th rounder and a never as-been franchise….I just love the way the universe works, don’t you?

  33. EVERY team has at one point been caught cheating. That means EVERY team should have also had a cumulative effect when dishing out penalty. There is absolutely ZERO consistency here.

How many times has your team cheated? Here’s the documented amount:
    Buffalo – 16
    Dolphins – 27
    Jets – 40
    Ravens – 35
    Bengals – 16
    Browns – 13
    Steelers – 46
    Texans – 16
    Colts – 37
    Jaguars – 12
    Titans – 20
    Broncos – 49
    Chiefs – 16
    Raiders – 27
    Chargers – 19
    Cowboys – 20
    Giants – 35
    Eagles – 28
    Redskins – 37
    Bears – 20
    Lions – 28
    Packers – 27
    Vikings – 23
    Falcons – 28
    Pathers – 20
    Saints – 23
    Buccaneers – 25
    Cardinals – 13
    49ers – 31
    Seahawks – 25
    Rams – 14

  34. Please dont whine about circumstantial evidence. Aaron Hernandez is spending life in prison for circumstantial evidence. Circumstantial evidence usually just means you would have to be pretty dumb not to believe it.

  35. I think the punishment if fair as long as the suspension is not reduced. I for one think Belichek should’ve been suspended also, as there is no way anything happens with that team that he isn’t aware of and approves of…..absolutely nothing.

  36. Some people I swear are idiots EVERY TEAM CHEATS YOU IDIOTS! Everyone just looks at the pats because they have been winning the last decade

  37. Funny how New England claims this is a witch trial while the rest of the country sees it as about right for the most part.

Tough to see the local hero go down a liar and fraud, and the vaunted franchise slapped for repeat offenses against the integrity of the game.

  38. Second time in cheating mode. Brady is not so Golden as well as NE under Kraft and Belicheat.

  39. I really wish the term “culture of cheating” existed in this news release.

    Is “anti-ethics” a word?

shot across the bow of every NFL team to play by the rules.

  40. I guess repeat offenders only count when it’s the Pats. Did a Jets coach have his players line up to trip opposing players on kickoffs, yet tampering this year only cost the Jets $100,000? Go figure.

The league office is full of ex-jets employees. They ran the jets into the ground through incompetence, now they’re doing the same thing to the league office. Bias, Bias, Bias.

You hate us cuz you aint us. Sorry your jealousy has driven you Pats haters mad.

    Go Pats.

    —————————————————-
Funny how you left out the patriots on your list. Just curious, but what is their number of cheats.
And I find it HILARIOUS that the Broncos lead the list with 49 and the Raiders have ONLY 27. The ghost of Al ” weekend @ Bernie’s” Davis is cursing you out right now!

  42. A million dollar fine is probably nothing to the Patriots, they should’ve made it like a 5 million dollar hit against their salary cap.

  43. Belichek should also have been suspended. A coach, regardless if he knew what was going on or not, is culpable for any team violations. And loss of a fourth round pick in two years is a non-factor. By 2017, the Pats will have figured out how to get back that fourth rounder. It should at least have been a second rounder.

  44. So the Pats got punished for Spygate, and then get punished again for Spygate, even though this time it’s a completely different set of people involved, and the people involved in Spygate were completely exonerated for Deflategate.

    That’s justice, NFL style.

only an idiot would turn the above event agst the Pats –

no penalty and no fine for Chancellor – yup the NFL – which has instituted a ton of rules for player safety and has a billion dollar concussion liability – really cares about consistency and integrity – just like you

  47. If the NFL think Spygate was actually cheating, they are as dumb as you haters

  48. Spygate was much worse. That clearly threatened the integrity of the game. Belichik should have been suspended a year. Instead Goodell burned the evidence. And now Pats fans are crying about a 4 game suspension? Be thankful it wasn’t the 8 games (minimum) that it should have been.

When legendary coach Don Shula was brought the other teams game plan found in a locker he tossed it in the trash.

Don’t try to spread your stench on others. And there is no need for name calling. Relax and take your comeuppance .

  50. Matt Walsh, Ernie Adams they have stories they could tell.Brady’s helmet with extra long communication in Gillette stadium, deflated balls to tilt turnover battle……..Pats have quite the history.
Bet there are a lot of franchises that would gladly part with $1.75 million, two first round picks, one 4th rounder, and a suspended star for four games for 4 Lombardi trophies. NFL won’t put any ****s on any of them (NCAA would) so it was well worth in the eyes of Belichick and Kraft I am sure.
I feel bad for NE fan base. It is May and the buzz should be about draft picks, roster changes ,etc instead they have to deal with and talk about Deflategate.
This thing is gonna get ugly……..

  51. Richard Nixon, Lance Armstrong, Tom Brady, NE Patriots,

    High profile,
    Lots of good in them.
    CHEATERS EVERY ONE.

Some people say it is just because they win so much. NO.

Much to my dismay the Steelers, Cowboys, Redskins, Miami, all have won a lot and were never accused of cheating, maybe getting a lucky bounce or a lucky call or non-call ( looking at things like the immaculate reception or the drew P push off) but never planning to cheat.

  52. As a fellow sports person myself I think this is a very harsh penalty. I mean he is just trying to win, that’s all.

the draft pick is going to be at 32 anyways its basically a 2nd round pick !
    ===================================
So with that logic, they basically they don’t pick until the third round???

  54. @aznwhip:
Curious as to your source for the total number of times that every NFL franchise has “cheated” in their existence….also curious as to why you listed every team’s number of sins EXCEPT the Patriots….I guess we should just assume their number is zero, right? How long has it been since the Raiders had to forfeit a 1st rounder for cheating? Cuz it just happened to the Pats for the second time in less than a decade…..

  55. Everything forever will be tarnished, including their future…. NE has flaunted the rules for a long time and its just a shame, they may not have had to….too many instances to ever take their SB wins seriously and TB and BB should never even sniff the HOF. Seriously how can anyone ever believe the whole stretch was legitimate? How can anyone believe the future with will be legit as long as RK, BB and TB are running the show? I think all objective people will likely think the Pats are getting off easy based on past history…smh

  56. More special treatment for patriots, repeat offenders –
YES. The browns and Alanta both were fined, like the pats on there second offence. Now we know why Brady was trying not to chuckle.4th , rd pick and 4 games before Goodall kisses crafts butt. Brady gave up his phone and Goodall desrtoyed it before it was leaked just like last time.

  57. Aaron Rodgers said he liked to over inflate footballs before giving them to the refs for inspection to see it they would take air out. He didnt instruct some lacky to deflate/inflate footballs after they had been approved for the game.

Big difference Cheatriot fans but keep bringing it up to try to take the focus off your cheating team.

  58. If the rumors are true that the Patriots possess(ed) evidence that other teams also videotaped defensive signals from the sideline and hid those to protect the league… it is SO on! I can’t wait to watch it all! #FireGoodell!!!

Finally someone who gets it…how many other star Qbs also admitted when this story initially broke that they had manipulated the balls as well? This is goodell cowing to public pressure and i’m pretty confident the suspension will be reduced to 2-3 games for brady. Technically the broncos and steelers are the most frequent cheaters historically…anything in common for these teams? If your not cheating – YOU ARE NOT WINNING.

  60. No more scoring 50 pts in the snow?

    More fumbles coming?

    Passer rating going down?

    Already guilty of one scandal?

Pats look real bad, all their accomplishments?!

Storied franchise for all the wrong reasons..

  61. It just gives me so much joy to see all of the haters crying. You seem to think that by calling the Patriots cheaters that that will somehow scar them and their fans in some way. All it does is make them play harder and win more. Keep it coming – your hate fuels us!!!
