Tuesday could trigger another wave of free agency

The 2015 free agency process could be getting a kick in the pants. Sort of.

In past years, the window for free agency additions counting toward the compensatory draft pick formula closed on June 1. This year, for the first time, it has moved to May 12.

It means that any remaining unrestricted free agents whose prior contracts expired on March 10 can join new teams without that transaction counting toward the new team’s total free agency gains and losses for the purposes of determining compensatory picks in 2016. For a player’s former team, the transaction won’t count as a loss for free-agency purposes after May 12.

Notable available names include quarterbacks Mike Vick, Tarvaris Jackson, and Matt Flynn, running back Chris Johnson, receiver Wes Welker, tight end Jermaine Gresham, and tackle Joe Barksdale.

The NFL adjusted the date to give teams a chance to add veterans in time for meaningful participation in offseason workouts and minicamps. By June 1, the offseason programs begin to wind down.

  1. Rams OT Joe Barksdale visited the Falcons recently, maybe he’s on his way there tomorrow to try on the newly installed zone blocking scheme…

  2. In the average fan’s view these are all serviceable players, at least they were last season. But there are reasons other than just numbers that these guys haven’t been signed, mostly they just can’t do it any more.

  3. The Sea Squawks are nickel and diming their backup players because they spent a lot of money on Jimmy Graham, and are facing huge contracts for Bobby Wagner and Russell Wilson. That is why Tarvaris Jackson has not been re-signed. Anyway, if Russell Wilson goes down, the Squawks can pretty much kiss their season goodbye because he was the reason they won the division and NFC CG last year.

  4. How quickly the Times change….I won my fantasy league just a couple years ago with Welker, CJnoK and Vick…even had Jermaine as my backup TE….

  5. If you need a backup quarterback that will push the starter to be his best….
Take a small risk and kick the tires on Vince Young.. See if he would be willing to help… He wouldn’t cost a lot…. His career won/loss record is 31-19… He’s a 2 time Pro-Bowler with playoff experience and was voted 2006 NFL Rookie of the Year….. The NFL is all about “WINS and LOSSES”…. and this guy WINS…. There is a big difference between Perception and Reality.
Bring in Vince Young and judge his talents for yourself….

  6. Vince young got a raw deal in philly. I’ve never seen media turn on it’s own player so fast for basically being excited and complementing his team.

  7. Crazy that Welker isn’t on somebodies roster, if only for the warm body / veteran leadership during training camp. good chemistry guy to have around your young guys trying to make the roster

  8. Someone should sign Bruce Gradkowski as their backup even though he hasn’t played a game in 5 years. Oh wait – the Stillers already did 😬

  9. Seahawks should check Vick out. He could backup Wilson and run plays just the way he does, considering they fairly similar style of play

  10. These scrap heap players are perfect for the Giants and Redskins. The Giants especially have been building the last two offseasons from the the scrap heap.
